@AndrewCashner I'm terrified by the frog eye sallad one. :)

@PauloCereda Have you seen Ricky Gervais's show "An Idiot Abroad" where they go to Brazil?

@AndrewCashner No. :) I am afraid to ask what they do. :)

@Paulo They take "your average working class bloke" and have him lodging with a cross-dresser, going to a gay beach, being in costume in the Carnaval parade, etc., just to make him uncomfortable.

@AndrewCashner Oh my.

@PauloCereda I think the frog eye thing is just a mixture of whipped cream, Jello, marshmellows, and maraschino cherries. I've had it but not by that name. Typical church dinner item.

12:04 AM
@AndrewCashner aaaaaah!
Gentlemen, time for me to go up the wooden hill to Bedfordshire. :) Good night @AndrewCashner and friends! :)

@Paulo Good night!

Q: How do I draw a pair of buttocks?

Simpleton JackI'm trying to develop a function which 3D plot would have a buttocks like shape. Several days of searching the web and a dozen my of own attempts to solve the issue have brought nothing but two pitiful formulas below. They have some resemblance to the shape I want, though not quite. Could you...

@PauloCereda so I should do mathematica.stackexchange.com/a/66564 in picture mode?

@DavidCarlisle Please? :)

8:56 AM
Drat, I'm out of votes. :)

@PauloCereda: Your duck is preparing herself for christmas?

@ClaudioFiandrino How do you like the ducky? :)

9:22 AM
I've got a silly walk!

@PauloCereda Yes.. almost.. Few things to prepare for my stay in Austin in two weeks than holidays :)

@ClaudioFiandrino Texas?

@PauloCereda Indeed! Globecom :)

@ClaudioFiandrino ooh! :)

@PauloCereda Let's hope will be fine.. not the trip.. the presentation of course

9:31 AM
@ClaudioFiandrino beamer? :)

@PauloCereda Already prepared that.. honestly the concern is about possible "questions" ;)

@ClaudioFiandrino Kind sir, your question is quite important and relevant, but sadly I could answer it properly in this short timeframe... would you be so kind to send me an email so I can at last provide a convincing explanation for you?

@PauloCereda Sounds good, thanks! Just hope to not use it ;)

@ClaudioFiandrino <3
@Claudio: everything will work fine. :) Including the awesome beamer slides + picture mode. :P

@PauloCereda Ops.. need to work on picture mode then
Right now I only have TikZ stuff..

9:44 AM
@ClaudioFiandrino Use David's drawings and you are safe. :)

Morning!

9:58 AM
@tohecz Hi Tom!

@PauloCereda how do you do? :)

@tohecz In a hurry, as usual. :) You?

@PauloCereda oh well, not so quite :) (It's 11am and I'm still having breakfast)
Needed to say, I'll likely be at work until 9pm today

10:51 AM
lalalalalalalala

11:03 AM

11:14 AM
@PauloCereda ^^ so that the room is not so silent :)

@tohecz Yay!
Dell is charging me R$ 2.31 for a Ubuntu install. LOL
I need to save money for buying the NAG compiler.

@PauloCereda :-)

@JosephWright It is an honour to have David in helpdesk. :)

@PauloCereda wha?

11:30 AM
@tohecz Non-standard build so chargeable, I guess

@tohecz I had to buy a new workstation. I got one from Dell and made sure they would sell me without Windows (they would charge a lot for license). They sold me a great machine with a Linux install. It was Ubuntu. Then I checked the invoice and they charged me for a Ubuntu install. :)

@JosephWright ah ok

@JosephWright It was a standard build, but I believe they charge for the install procedure. :) If I had chosen a Windows install, they also would charge me for a license.

@PauloCereda well, I paid € 120 for getting my computer set up properly as dual-boot, I decided so after I spent 2 weeks trying to do that myself.

@tohecz Oh my.

11:32 AM
@tohecz Sounds odd: nowadays it's usually straight-forward
@tohecz Or were you using LILO?

@JosephWright wow, it's been a while since I last heard about LILO. :)

@JosephWright it's not, with the new EFI stuff

@tohecz Ah, yes EFI is more tricky

The last time was Lilo and Stitch. :P
Fubá is sick. :(

@JosephWright so I paid a company, told them my preferred username, that I want the latest Fedora stable in English and at least 50GB for linux / partition and 400 GB for /home and that I prefer Toshiba. I got the proposal in couple days and the computer in a bit more than a week. And I'm happy since then
@PauloCereda who?

11:35 AM
@tohecz My white cat.

@PauloCereda ah
more milk, you need more milk. And some canaries, too :)

@tohecz ooh!

11:56 AM
@PauloCereda Turn on the Internet radio and let him listen to the adagio from Mozart's clarinet concerto.

@egreg Who's playing?

@JosephWright Old recording with Alfred Prinz; Karl Böhm conducts the Wiener Philharmoniker.

@egreg Ah

@JosephWright 1974
@JosephWright One of the best pieces in the history of music.

@egreg Yes
@egreg I love playing it, although of course I don't have the technique to do it justice
@egreg (I only have a B-flat instrument, not an A and certainly not a basset clarinet, so of course it's not ideal anyway)

12:03 PM
@egreg :)

@JosephWright And the Wiener Philharmoniker to back you up. ;-)

@egreg :-)

@egreg hmmm wienerschnitzel. :)

@PauloCereda hey, this is not fair! I haven't had it for 2 months and it's still 3 weeks to go!

@tohecz No Austrian restaurant in Paris?

12:15 PM
@tohecz Oh no!
@egreg And I thought it was German... :(

@PauloCereda Wiener!

@egreg ooooh!
Das ist sehr komplicated. :)

@PauloCereda Knowing that Vienna is in Austria? Well, we had Austrian domination for almost 70 years here (1797-1866), so we learn it at school. :)

@egreg Boo. :)
@egreg: oh no, now I want wienerschnitzel!

12:31 PM
@PauloCereda it's not proper fish and chips: the batter is made of breadcrumbs and the fish is made of pork (or veal if you're posh):(

@DavidCarlisle ooh some weird fish they have. :)

@PauloCereda Probably lack of a coast that does it.

@DavidCarlisle They have the Blau Donau

Q: How to include a .TeX file generated from .Rnw file into a .TeX file which is child of parent .TeX file?

FranckessI really need help. Here is the problem: I'm writing my dissertation using a LaTeX template (http://www.latextemplates.com/template/masters-doctoral-thesis). The template is a parent file with multiple chapters as children. For some of the chapters, I want to include objects and output from R, w...

How to include <blank> generated from <blank> into <blank> where <blank> is a <blank> of <blank>?
Wow.

@PauloCereda I'm good at translation. It translates as missing \makeatletter

@DavidCarlisle WOW!

@PauloCereda ignore what OP says, see what tex says which was you can't use '\spacefactor' which means in latex you can't use \@ which 99.99999% of the time means you were trying to use \@zzzz but forgot \makeatletter

@DavidCarlisle :)

1:41 PM
@DavidCarlisle Sounds familiar? latex-community.org/forum/…

@egreg there probably are, but the best schintzel is only at Apt. 7 of [fill in my Mom's address]

@Johannes_B I answered that here the other day:-) I see you have some user known as josephwright using that site at the moment

@DavidCarlisle He is a mod there as well ;-)

Q: MikTeX error: Invalid control sequence

ElnazI've recently installed MikTeX 2.9 for Windows 7, 64. After installation I try to compile an IEEE template downloaded from their website. I get the following error: miktex-pdftex.exe: Invalid control sequence. I've tried many things I've read online but nothing seems to work. Any ideas? Thanks

@Johannes_B Indeed, though I perhaps don't give it the time I might

@JosephWright There is still me ;-)

2:07 PM
@DavidCarlisle Where do you think the problem is located? Did MikTeX get corrupted (by an update or itself) or is the cause on the OS side?

@Johannes_B I have no idea; never seen miktex, i just googled for the error message and hit the earlier question.

@DavidCarlisle The same way here, but i found the Q on tex.se :-)
@DavidCarlisle My only duggestion would be to use texlive instead.

@Johannes_B cygwin version:-)

2:34 PM
@egreg (enumerate+1) I gave up trying to work out what the intention was:-)

2:46 PM
@DavidCarlisle That user has a fancy for xargs and for overcomplicated code.

3:10 PM
@HarishKumar It's apparent you know nothing about snow. :)
Wah snow flakes! — Harish Kumar 1 hour ago

@egreg or he can't count to 6:-)

@DavidCarlisle not all snowflakes have 6 arms. All of them, however, follow a hexagonal scheme

@tohecz true but that one has 8:-)

3:25 PM
@DavidCarlisle maybe it's 4D

2 hours later…
5:01 PM
Heya/Oi!

@Iplodman Hi!

How's your day going/Tudo bem? ;P

@egreg -1 for answering the question that should have been asked :P

@tohecz :)
@tohecz But the question is titled “Alternatives to \paragraph

@egreg yeah I know

5:08 PM
@Iplodman Very well, weren't from workers lurking in my room.

@egreg Sorry to hear it ;P

@Iplodman Working on the front of my building. The scaffolding reached my window yesterday.

Oh lord.
Spoiled the view, have they? :L

@Iplodman Quite so.

That sucks.

5:13 PM
@egreg when the fasade was being repaired at my parents' place, I used to play the workers some piano :)

@tohecz Low temperature: must keep the window closed.

@egreg What is the temperature down south at your place?

@Johannes_B We're at 9, presently.

@egreg Chilly.

@Johannes_B For my standards it's freezing.

5:19 PM
@egreg you should invite @PauloCereda, he'd like that.

We have \SI{1}{\celsius}

@DavidCarlisle Sure thing!

@egreg Physics clearly not your strongest subject

@DavidCarlisle As the KV expert, wanna give an alternative solution?

Q: Use komavar outside scrlttr2

white_geckoI'm deriving my own class from scrartcl but wan to introduce variables as in scrlttr2 for the user of the class to set several values. I find the \setkomavar resp. \usekomavar mechanism with key, value and description quite convenient. Is there any way of using komavars if I'm not using the scrl...

@egreg well, it's colder than Paris then :)

5:22 PM
@Johannes_B I have no idea what the original does, never really looked at the koma classes:-)

@DavidCarlisle Did you at least what the OP wants? I asked for an example of his solution hoping to get enlightened ... The answer is (for me) just as unclear as the question.

@DavidCarlisle My freezing point is 9.96 degrees, accurately measured.

@DavidCarlisle brrrrrrr

6:16 PM
@Johannes_B same here:-)

6:26 PM
@DavidCarlisle Potential bug report for xspace :-)

@JosephWright where?

@DavidCarlisle See team list
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{csquotes}
\MakeAutoQuote{<}{>}
\usepackage{xspace}
\begin{document}
a\xspace <test>
\end{document}

@JosephWright got it. \protected hmm bit modern for xspace;-) I suppose I should have a look. The package in my head is always the original version not Morten's extended one....

Q: Profile Page Makeover, Part 3: the Prototype returns

OdedYou may recall this thing - our profile page makeover prototype, the reloaded user page. We posted a prototype 6 months ago and got a lot of feedback. Since then, generations of dinosaurs were born, fell in love, had families and were eventually killed by a comet. Or climate change, or maybe tex...

@tohecz Aaaargh!

@egreg (sorry, I didn't indent to ping you. I've ruined your evening, haven't I? :D )

7:02 PM
BUG FOUND!!! I offer free beer to everybody! :)
^^ @Paulo :)

@JosephWright so Morten tests if a token is expandable with \expandafter\ifx\noexpand\@let@token\@let@token% which seems a bit sneaky, but it says \protected\def tokens are expandable....

7:28 PM
@tohecz ooooooh

7:41 PM
Good maen

@egreg exactly my feelings

@percusse well, to make things even worse (you'll like this one since you're a known rep-hunter):

Q: What is "People helped" and why does it exist at all?

toheczI wonder what is "People helped" (PH) stat supposed to signify. From what I read in Profile Page Makeover, Part 3: the Prototype returns, it stands for cumulative number of views on some (all) of my posts. I would like to know why we consider views as such a significant thing to put it on the ver...

@tohecz Give me any random statistics about any detail of any profile and I can make an equivalently bullshit quasi-good-will excuse.

@percusse answer my question with this ;)

My suggestion is to count how many people hovered over your nickname. It shows how people truly memorized your nickname to reach you whenever they needed.

7:49 PM
@percusse oh what a great idea!

@tohecz Check this one out. I'm trying to incorporate some of those to my toolbox
The last ones are the best ones.
hover over the plots

I'm quite lacking some memory now (doing heavy computation)

ah then it might not fly

@percusse well it works, and it looks quite impressive. But I think I'm happy I don't need any such fancy stuff :)

@tohecz You would complain if you started with these things when you don't have it on other system :P

8:02 PM
@percusse I think I lost you :)

@tohecz Nevermind. Snarky comment :)

@percusse ok :)

2 hours later…
10:09 PM
Not much activity in here :-( Have a nice time :D

10:31 PM
@ChristianHupfer not really

10:42 PM
@egreg: For me, every thing that looks like that is a snowflake! ;)

@HarishKumar Have you ever seen real snow?

@egreg Nope! :(
Wait, in photos ;)

@HarishKumar Too bad!

@egreg Indeed. But I don't think I will survive if I see. So it is better not to see :)
@egreg What I have seen is rain, rain rain and lots of it. :)

@HarishKumar It's not so terrible, after all. Rain can be much worse!
@HarishKumar This is a photo taken in 1956
Quite unusual for Rome.

10:52 PM
@egreg But I like rain. We used to get 4 months of solid rain in my native place. But here in Pondicherry it is less. But we do get cyclones here that bring rain.
@egreg That looks nice. But what I don't like is the low temperature!

@HarishKumar Neither do I. :)

@egreg Long ago, when I was a student of high school, I went to Kashmir for a camp for 15 days. And New Delhi in the month of Jan and Feb. After that I started disliking very low temperatures. It was literally hell.

@HarishKumar I guess that Kashmir can be really cold!

@egreg I swear, it is!

@HarishKumar We don't have very low temperatures here, normally. Some night can be below zero during winter. There are exceptions though: I remember once I had to go to the school I teached at with my moped and we were at –12 in the morning. Brrr!

11:08 PM
@egreg Travelling on a moped at -12! Ah! that is what I was talking about :)

@HarishKumar Not really funny!

@egreg Not at all. If I were to do that I would be dead instantly.
Yesterday, I went by scooter to work. And scooter was moving randomly because I was shivering!
BTW it is winter + rainy here.

@HarishKumar What do you mean by “winter”? Temperature around 20?

@egreg You will not believe. It is 27 and 24 low.
hihi, That is our winter. Now you understand why I don't like low temperatures like yours :)

@HarishKumar Unbearable!

11:24 PM
@egreg Yea freeeezing. :)
