@PauloCereda Would be nice :-)

@PauloCereda cool and that is getting Bruno to Japan?

@PauloCereda Then I can prod you as well as all of the team (see earlier)

Under 600 with no answer. :) A good deal of them are about LyX.

@FrankMittelbach That was @Joseph idea. :)

Q: Problem with compiling presentation using documentclass foil

Nguyễn Duy KhánhI downloaded the example file from here and try to install it on my computer. At the first time, my MiKTeX does not have foil.sty, then I made a folder in C: call localtexmf, and install foil.sty there. Then I put the Example.tex inside this folder, and open Texmaker to compile. The result is not...

@egreg Never quite sure how to handle those

I will go to Japan

@FrankMittelbach I think Will is a more realistic choice
@FrankMittelbach Cool
@FrankMittelbach I wonder if I can swing some work-related reason to go

with 2 weeks vacation in front of the conference

@FrankMittelbach Any chance of getting you to (Euro)BachoTeX? :-)

11:01 PM
@FrankMittelbach I want to go too! I recently went to a Japanese restaurant for the first time in my whole life and learnt how to use chopsticks. I want to show my skills. :)

@lockstep Did you see the font used in the document source window? :)

@FrankMittelbach Taking the family?

@egreg Wild code. :)

@egreg Now i did. :-(

@egreg and ConTeXt

11:02 PM
@PauloCereda that takes lifetime learning ... picking up peas is a nice exercise
@JosephWright we'll see who will come

@FrankMittelbach Ah right, potentially a holiday from your family ;-)

@JosephWright yep ... the twins are not yet sold ...

@FrankMittelbach My first exercise. :) It was very fun. :)

@FrankMittelbach You may have some time to wait: my family have not got rid of me, and my sister (and her son) is round at 'home' every day!

@PauloCereda well that can keep you hungry if you are unlucky

11:06 PM
TL - no new info:

@MartinSchröder Just realized that his main question is not solved from my comments, so not much point. I could only answer the question about hyperlinking references.

Q: Compiling problems with scrreprt

NeoRiddleI want to compile my theses with scrreprt and classicthesis, but it does not work. Here you have a compilation output: pdflatex \\nonstopmode\\input tesis.tex This is pdfTeX, Version 3.1415926-1.40.10 (TeX Live 2009/Debian) entering extended mode LaTeX2e <2009/09/24> Babel <v3.8l> a...

@JosephWright I meant sold them that going to japan is a good plan

@FrankMittelbach My plan B was to scream "FIRE!" and while people were in panic, I'd grab the sushi thingy with my hands and eat. :)

@FrankMittelbach Ah, right
@PauloCereda You know 'Fire' in Japanese?

11:07 PM
@PauloCereda it is perfectly permissable to eat suhi with your hand in Japan

@JosephWright: I don't know if I mentioned this before, but dandelion in Portuguese is dente-de-leão, which means lion's tooth. :)
@FrankMittelbach ooh!
@JosephWright No idea! That's plan B-1. :)

@PauloCereda Makes sense, as the English name is French (or perhaps a corruption)

TL - probably a "didn't delete auxiliary files" problem:

Q: Problem with Natbib after installing biblatex

Morten KnudsenI installed BibLaTeX, and I couldn't get it to work so I decided to go back to my old BibTeX natbib - but now I can't get my references back. What's going on...? Do I have to redo the installation of BibLaTeX? Code: \documentclass[11pt,a4paper]{article} \usepackage[sort]{natbib} \begin{docume...

A: How to put white space under header in theorem environment

toheczAssuming you use amsthm, you can define new theorem style that issues the endline after the theorem heading: \documentclass{article} \usepackage{amsthm} \newtheoremstyle{plain2} {3pt}% Space above {3pt}% Space below {}% Body font {}% Indent amount {\bfseries}% Theorem head font {\\*[3pt]}% P...

@tohecz done. I have still 4 votes to close ...

I have to set up a notebook for a friend: Mint or OpenSUSE?
I was thinking of the latter.

@Kurt I have many, I concentrating on the "constructive" solutions today

:-)

@Kurt 8 answers in last 3 hours ;) and 9 close votes used during the same time

Q: Appendix trouble

André Luis KorzenowskiI am in trouble with my appendix. I include \appendix<br> \chapter{Appendix Title 1} \section{Section 1} \section{Section 2} but in the TOC does not show the letters. The TOC is just this... Appendix Title 1 .1 Section 1 .2 Section 2 without the letters. May someone help? I am using L...

@egreg yep

@MartinSchröder I would love to but for me the timing is always conflicting with other things and this is no different this year.
@egreg isn't this a question for a doctor?

(no mwe)

@bloodworks I love the questions that state I don't have time ... can somebody else spend the time for me? ... you guys are far too liberal with people who only want to use you

@FrankMittelbach when one doesn't have much time, he should spend it on stating his question correctly ... :-/

11:28 PM
@tohecz you didn't hear the irony? I think we miss a closing category ... DNSAE

@FrankMittelbach it's known... Sometimes and if i would run a forum or q&a platform i would say so may lovely things to them

@FrankMittelbach you mean irony in my post?

as in "Does Not Show Any Effort"

But since i'm not the owner al i can do is to ignore those do that for me questions and flag them

@FrankMittelbach falls into SQ

11:29 PM
@FrankMittelbach Would be NARQ, I think

@JosephWright Agreed.

@JosephWright t is a real question though ... only not a proper one ...

This can be closed as dup I think

Q: Longtable overfilling the bottom margin with longtable and figures

janislawIn the paper I'm writing I want to format a long sequences of equations with definitions. To have a consistent indentation in the whole paper I have decided to use two-column longtables to be able to break them between pages. However, there are some nondeterministic vertical overfulls on the bott...

so the one above shoult then not be TL but NARQ?
same font and bold for thesis in chapter, section and so on

@FrankMittelbach I believe that NARQ and TL are often interchangable.

11:32 PM
@tohecz Certainly in the way we use them

@tohecz which is why I think it is neither ;-)

@tohecz I suspect on SO they would NARQ a lot of things we close as TL

You have a non-question and in the comment discussion, it is found that the answer to the true question is trivial (or OP finds it himself), so we close it as TL.

Now down to 611: over 100 dealt with

@FrankMittelbach somehow I agree
@JosephWright yeah, and I can proudly say I gave 8 answers

11:33 PM
I mean I'm all for helping ... it is fun etc ... but if people just use you ... and not doing minimal homework ...

@Frank that is what makes good helpers leave

btw, this encounters a nice correlation with first Saturdays in month ;) tex.stackexchange.com/badges/62/revival?userid=11002

and i can fully understand that

@bloodworks nobody forces you to help on "bad" questions

@tohecz that's not really the point ...

11:36 PM
Right, bed time for me: see you :-)

if such questions are getting always answered then you end up with attracting more and more of those ...

@tohecz yup and i don't (nor left so far; )

@tohecz I'm waiting for mine. :) Seven new answers to old questions. :)

@Frank exactly

I, on the other hand, think that willingness to help with TeX means willingness to imrpove typography and to make many people use TeX. So IMHO we should provide a lot of support to people who come here and are obviously worried/frustrated about LaTeX
@egreg I cannot be of any help now, and in 20 minutes I'll be in bed, I get up at 7.30

11:40 PM
@tohecz I'm quite exhausted, too.

@tohecz I think I have a history of supporting that goal, people with worries are not what I mean

@FrankMittelbach yeah, there are 2 kinds of people who post "bad" questions, but sometimes it's hard to distinguish them

@tohecz of course and for me this is one of the reasons i support tex and tex-plattforms, but as frank said rtfm can be requested of anybody. (as long as they can read)

@bloodworks (and as long as the manual is "edible")

@bloodworks some minimal one at least ...

11:42 PM
No i expect them to read the companion! twice! ;-)

@bloodworks that is second step ;-)

after the texbook you mean?
;-)

@FrankMittelbach not to offend anybody, but I haven't read any (La)TeX-related book, I've only went through 2 of them

@bloodworks let's say more than just taking a sample document from somebody else and then asking questions based on not understanding what happens

btw i started off with Helmut Kopka... if someone would have told me than that there is a l2short...

11:45 PM
@tohecz you don't have to ... neither have I when I started

@FrankMittelbach yeah, but as you could find somewhere in the starred messages: I should have read source2e before making a new document class ;)

@tohecz said who?

@Frank yup

Bel
Hey can anybody answer my question regarding cross referencing equations?

@FrankMittelbach me, after coding things like \@for and \@tfor myself ;)

11:47 PM
it is actually not a bad advice, because in 2e there is not much interfaces available
@tohecz then now you should read interface3.pdf instead

@FrankMittelbach 3? sounds like an l3 thingy...

@tohecz it is and it's good

@tohecz so? ... it offers decent datastructures and controls and it works (even within 2e)

;)
Just that this dosen't go unsung: i like the l3 approach

@FrankMittelbach yeah, but unfortunately I have to deal with real people with real old distros. I keep it TL2009 compatible, so far I have to distribute only 2 sty files with it to comply this.

Bel
11:52 PM
I think that I should post my question rather than waiting for answer in chat room

@tohecz ah the old distro issue. That should actually not be a big issue if we change our packaging a bit. right now expl3 is distruted as a dozen .sty files or more but it is in fact a single one splt for internal convenience. @JosephWright we should perhaps think about pushing all code into expl3.sty at some point as none of it is supposed to be used alone

@Bel Hello! Sorry we seem to be digged into some discussion.

@Bel Hello! We can always benefit from a question, but fire it away, maybe we can help you here. :)
!!/help
@PauloCereda Psmith, the TeX bot: Good night! I'm Psmith, the friendly TeX bot - the p in my name is silent, as in pshrimp. I'm here as a companion to our fellow users in the typographic land. As you probably noticed, I always reply under Paulo's account, but do not despair, I say, my replies are always preceded by my own name. Enjoy your stay at TeX.sx! If you need any help, just ask our chat residents. Cheerio!

Bel
nice of you

!!/texdef -t latex -p multicol multicols

Bel
11:54 PM
Actually I need to submit a paper where the appendix should be in a separate file and the equations references should be coherent with the ones in the main file.
For instance say my main file ends with equation (21) and so I need that my appendix starts with the equation (22) and we can also refer to the equations in the main file as well.

Psmith, the TeX bot, in fixed font mode: Here's the output from texdef:

\multicols:
macro:#1->\col@number #1\relax \ifnum \col@number <\tw@ \PackageWarning {multicol}{Using `\number \col@number ' columns doesn't seem a good idea. I therefore use two columns instead}\col@number \tw@ \fi \ifnum \col@number >10 \PackageError {multicol}{Too many columns}{Current implementation doesn't support more than 10 columns.\MessageBreak I therefore use 10 columns instead}\col@number 10 \fi \ifx \@footnotetext \mult@footnotetext \else \let \orig@footnotetext \@footnotetext \let \@footnotetext \mult@footn

@FrankMittelbach everything would be much easier for me if l3* lived in one (huge) file :D

@Bel If I'm not mistaken, there's a package for that, but I can't remember the name. :(

@Bel add \makeatletter\input mainfile.aux\makeatother just after \begin{document}, it should work

Welcome to the party, @Alan! I hope you brought the snacks.

11:57 PM
@Bel you could simply set the counter i guess.

@PauloCereda No, but I've just made an enormous pot of feijão.

@AlanMunn ooh branco ou preto? :)

@bloodworks the idea is to get it right automagically

Bel
@Paulo: I used \usepackage{xr} \externaldocument{}
but the problem is that in the new document (Appendix) it starts from Eq. (1)

@Frank ah oh i see

11:58 PM
@PauloCereda Preto of course. The only kind. :)

Let's blame the xr author. :) /pokes @DavidCarlisle :)

@Bel \setcounter{equation}{21}, if you can do it manually (in the preamble)

@AlanMunn Ah! :)

@egreg @Bel this.

@AlanMunn: let me know when you come by the southeast region, you could visit me. :)
