6:00 PM
@tohecz good suggestion aspell check -d de t (after sudo apt-get install aspell-de) works great but it is unable to read LaTex -files without renaming them?!

The first verb I learned was heiße, so the first sentence was Ich heiße Paulo. I remember the teacher told us about the Eszett and that I could replace ß by ss.

@hhh I use it with .tex files successfully...

You should put the full name, i.e. aspell check -d de myfile.tex

hhh
@tohecz this worked: aspell check Days/03_15.tex -d de

6:03 PM
Unless you're swiss, then it is OK
@PauloCereda Well, yes, you can, everybody would understand it. I'd mark it as incorrect, though :) After "ei", "au" and other similar sounds one never writes ss.

hhh
for some reason you must have the file there like that

ok, try aspell -d de check Days/03_15.tex

So "Ich heiße Paulo" is correct (more correct would be: Ich heiße Patrick, because my name is not Paulo)

LOL. :P
I love ß, it's elegant! :)

@PauloCereda it's a relikt of the old typeface

6:06 PM
@egreg Do you like the math in the note I linked you to?

hhh
@tohecz yes that works as well and well, thanks.

@KannappanSampath Not my cup of tea. :)

@PauloCereda The problem with it is that it does not sound different from "s" sometimes. Meister and (the incorrect) Meißter cannot be distinguished. So by hearing a word (saying it to yourself for example) you don't know if there is a "s" or "ß"

@tohecz It's very beautiful. :)

@egreg Oh, OK. On that note: there is an article on a group theory problem in my blog, the place where I linked you to. :)

6:09 PM
@hhh I'm glad to be helpful ;)

@PatrickGundlach Ah interesting. We have a similar problem with s, ss, c and ç. :)

@PauloCereda It's a matter of taste I think. On the other hand, I tried reading a 200-year-old Bible and it's beautiful font

@KannappanSampath The one on the minimal nonzero subgroup?

@PauloCereda Except for the ugly ß in the EC fonts:

@egreg Yes. Right. :)

6:11 PM

(The only one, of course. )

@PatrickGundlach quite close to the original. The left part is almost exactly how "s" used to be typeset in the past

I can't believe that JK actually made that publicly available

@PatrickGundlach and the right part is how "s" is typeset today, and they are connected to make a "ligature"

@tohecz This is the worst drawn letter I've ever seen in my whole live.

6:13 PM
Hi @Andrew

@KannappanSampath The structure theorem of finitely generated abelian groups tells it immediately, of course: every finitely generated abelian group is a direct sum of cyclic groups. If it has a minimal nonzero subgroup the number of summands has to be 1 because two summands would produce two non trivial subgroups with zero intersection.

@KannappanSampath Good evening.

I don't comment on the beauty of the glyph but on the factography around it ;)

@egreg True, and I wrote that up at the end. But, unfortunately, structure theorem does not tell us what would happen in the non-abelian case. :)

user19161
@tohecz Factography?

6:15 PM
@tohecz There are different forms of the ß in the past. See for example the wikipedia entry on it:

(And, the post I wrote does not quite make it explicit. In the non-abelian case, using a very similar argument, we can conclude that they are the quaternions.)

@KannappanSampath Dinner time! The minimal subgroup must have prime order also in the nonabelian case. But I don't see why the group should be cyclic.

hhh
@tohecz any idea how to get "u, ü to mean the same thing in aspell? (for some reason, it fails with "a, "o etc)

@egreg In the non-abelian case, it cannot be cyclic! (Cyclic \implies abelian)
@egreg Enjoy your dinner! :)

hhh
@tohecz well it is egal, I did a few SED -oneliners to fix the prob

6:19 PM
Well, the problem is that german babel defines really strange things with these "a... I don't understand why people cannot use full utf8 nowadays...
For example, I know only two people who still use \r u for ů and \v r for ř, unfortunately they are my supervisor and co-supervisor. (On the other hand, this is one of the very few things I don't like with them)

@Andrew I must tell you, I am a fan of your cake! :) (While I am learning Math, I still have not learnt enough to understand the things you work with! But, I like Algebra!)

@tohecz But old documents are still about, and must still compile

user19161
@KannappanSampath You might like other things more later on!

@PauloCereda How's the arara development going? I figured out that I can still use it in my current workflow: when doing the final run for my lectures then I have a very complicated but precise scheme which arara could eat for breakfast. So I use xelatex for when I'm developing a lecture and then arara for the final compilations.

@JasperLoy Yes, I have not ruled out that possibility. But, I sincerely believe the probability of such a thing is negligible!

6:23 PM
@KannappanSampath Cake's good. But if you ever get a chance to eat a cake that I bake, refuse.

user19161
@AndrewStacey I can't even fry an egg!

@JosephWright I don't argue on that. But the correct solution to aspell problems is utf8

@AndrewStacey I had to stop it for a while, but I'll come back to arara pretty soon. :) I have to update the manual first, but I don't think it will take too much. I have some sample code here and I'll probably add features to it. :)

@KannappanSampath I'm not an algebraist (though I was getting myself confused with that fact that egreg mentioned about finitely generated abelian groups. Turned out my group wasn't finitely generated so it didn't apply)

user19161
6:24 PM
@KannappanSampath I definitely prefer analysis to algebra. For one, it is easier to visualize.

@AndrewStacey You work with categories, don't you?

@JasperLoy Oh yes, I've always found visualising L^2 functions a breeze!
@KannappanSampath Only when I have to.

@JasperLoy Many do, until they see more crazy things! ;)
@AndrewStacey What was the group you had in mind, if I may ask?

user19161
@faheem Your avatar is so light that I often mistake you for @nn who is the white square.

@KannappanSampath It was the K-theory of CP^\infty (strictly, the 0-degree part), thus Z[[t]].

6:28 PM
(You can arrive at the decomposition of abelian grapes into cyclic grapes from primary decomposition of modules by viewing them as Z-modules but that is an overkill; but it helps to know, Jim Humphrey's post in MO about this makes a very terse reading.)
@AndrewStacey :( I am a freshman and I don't understand a word there. My bad; should not have asked, \me thinks.

@KannappanSampath stupid question, who is a "freshman"?

@KannappanSampath As a group, it is formal power series in a single variable. The K-theory bit was simply to explain why I'm interested in it (as I'm a topologist).

user19161
@tohecz It means first year undergrad.

What Jasper said, tohecz.

so first year at the university?

user19161
6:30 PM
Sophomore means second year undergrad.

Fucking American English (sorry it I offend anybody)

user19161
But this terminology is mostly used in the US I think, and everyone copies the US, except the Brits!

coins with no values written there. Term names with no numbers in them, etc.

@JasperLoy We'd just say first/second/third/fourth year

@AndrewStacey I did get that! :) Yes, it is not f.g because the generators are t^n for n \in N..., am I right here?

6:31 PM
Yes, don't blame the English for that one! It's definitely American.

@AndrewStacey @JasperLoy sorry, edited...

@JasperLoy I don't like it myself but I use it as most members happen to come from US at the MSE chat room!

user19161
The Americans like to change the British spelling all the time: color and colour, favorite and favourite...

Foreign people whould be really surprised if the CZK 10 coin whould be called "pětka" where "pět" means 5...

@KannappanSampath If viewed simply as an abelian group, then not even those are enough. Those generate only the polynomials: Z[t]. To get the formal power series you also need things like 1+t+t^2+t^3+...
So we sometimes think of it with a sort of topology on it, where the polynomials are dense and then \{t^n\} becomes a topological generating family.

6:35 PM
@AndrewStacey I see. So, like the open sets will be the subgroup generated by a collection of generators?

@KannappanSampath If you want to be precise, the neighbourhoods of 0 are the sets of the form t^n Z[[t]]

Oh, OK. I think I get it now.

hhh
Is someone able to answer this here about german? (looking for a dictionary checking plurals... to check which alternative from aspell...)
Cello, Cellos, Ceylon -- not Cellon :p

hhh
@PatrickGundlach amazing even aspell fails with that, it offers no "Celli" as an alternative...

6:44 PM
spent most of the day writing Lua code for LuaTeX :-))

@hhh aspell is really good yet not perfect...
@hhh what system / shell do you use?

hhh
@tohecz Ubuntu and I think this is the default, Bash.
yes /bin/bash

Ok, then you can add alias daspell='aspell -d de check' to your ~/.bashrc file and then you daspell Myfile.tex
there's even a simple way to make it automatically add .tex extension if you were interested

I really love LaTeX because it is so flexible. Try to do something like this under MS Word:
user image

That's done using a second row which uses \rule.

hhh
@MartinScharrer source code :P
(that is good-looking)

6:51 PM
@MartinScharrer or this (similar usage, just that I plot the graphs in \begin{picture}: kmlinux.fjfi.cvut.cz/~hejdato1/main/www/latex/…

@hhh Code:
\newlength\blockheight
\newlength\blockwidth
\normalsize
\blockheight=.1ex
\blockwidth=3.3em
\newcommand{\block}[1]{%
    \adjustbox{trim={\tabcolsep} 0pt}{\textcolor{blue!45}{\rule{\blockwidth}{#1\blockheight}}}%
}
\begin{Table}
    \blockwidth=3.9em
    \sisetup{
        round-mode = figures,
        round-precision = 3
    }%
    \def\NUM#1{\leavevmode\hbox to 0pt{\hss\num{#1}\hss}}%
    \captionoftable{Trumpfwahrscheinlichkeit $P_\text{TAT}(14,e,t)$ für die anderen Teilnehmer wenn man $e$ eigene Trümpfe besitzt.}
I'm using siunitx for \NUM and Table is a non-floating version of table I defined.
@tohecz That's both doable with MS Word, but the exact format of the graphs can be a pain.

@MartinScharrer Yes I know. As well as exporting the data from a MySQL db in such way that MS Word will read it...

BTW: That table show the probabilities for certain card constellations in the famous Bavarian card game Schafkopf.
@tohecz Good the graph is better done with Excel and then copied to Word.
But I wasted 30min of my time to figure out how to change a simple format of the graph last time and than remade it with Gnuplot!!!
@hhh The values in the code are not the same as in the picture. The picture is older and the values changed in the meantime.

hhh
@MartinScharrer I see, interesting context...never played that game but looks interesting

Schafkopf, also called Schaffkopf, is a late 18th century German trick-taking card game most popular in Bavaria, but also played in other parts of Germany as well as other German-speaking countries like Austria. Its modern descendants are Doppelkopf, Skat and the North American game of Sheepshead. Its earliest written reference dates to 1803, although it only came to notice by the polite society of Altenburg in 1811. Today Schafkopf is an important part of the Bavarian culture and way of life. Etymology Explanations of the origin of the name Schafkopf vary. One suggestion is that Schafkop...

@JasperLoy Mmm. I didn't have anything to do with it. I think it might be generated by a that gravatar site. I dunno.

user19161
@FaheemMitha Yes, I know. It is the default one in your case.

@DavidCarlisle: Hey, you're the author of xr? Nifty!
@JasperLoy I liked my old one better. It was black. I think it is automatically generated from my email address, and seemingly in a deterministic way. I got creeped out at one point because it seemed to be following me around the net. Then I realised what was happening.

@FaheemMitha :)

7:14 PM
Anyway, when I changed my email last Oct or so, the symbol changed, and unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a "I like this symbol and would like to keep it" option.
It seems SE is not the only site that uses gravatar.

@KannappanSampath Without the "abelian" assumption, of course.

SE has a short term memory and I get a new gravatar everyday.

@JasperLoy OTOH, I think it is safe to say the image you are using was not generated by gravatar. :-)
@percusse Really? Odd.

@egreg It will be a prime power order--more special--because the prime can be shown to be $2$ and you get the generalized quaternions. I find that fascinating. A simple propert such as this forces so much symmetry!

Wait no football no cricket but math? Oh come on! Back to TikZ questions then :P
@FaheemMitha Yep, I have a problem with OpenID probably.

7:26 PM
@percusse Sorry about that. :)

@KannappanSampath No problem at all :)

Group theory, huh?

Any Mac users here? I would need a sample .fls file produced by pdflatex -recorder for Mac.

@KannappanSampath Yes, the group of elementary quaternions is a counterexample. In the case of non finitely generated abelian groups, such a group should be a Prüfer group. It must be torsion, as a torsion-free group cannot have that minimal subgroup, since Z can be embedded into it. A torsion group is always a sum of its primary subgroups, so it is a p-group, hence a module over the localization of Z at (p); therefore its injective envelope is the Prüfer p-group. And the result follows.

@egreg Good old Darwin. :)
One of my favorite BSD's. :)
You can guess it's a Mac because of the uppercase Users folder. :P

@PauloCereda Yes, but if one is working somewhere else that's not guaranteed. However directories on mounted volumes should start with /Volumes.

@egreg Yes, you are right. :) It was a nice try though. :P
@egreg: I thinking of watching the first half of Inter:Milan and the second half of Cagliari:Juve. :)

8:38 PM
Is there any recommended way of presenting quoted text in a LaTeX document, other than surrounding it with quote marks? I've been using verbatim, but that doesn't quite cut it.

Is there a package that would make all \chapter*, \section* etc. write a .toc line automatically?
@FaheemMitha \begin{quote}...?

@tohecz Not that I know. But I wouldn't use such commands more than a few times in the document. Juggling with secnumdepth may help.

That for longer texts. Shorter ones should be surrounded by quote marks. You can as wel ues differenc font shape for quotes (it makes them distinguishable and improves the look of them)

@tohecz Huh. There's a quote environment?
@tohecz Like italic?

csquotes might help too. :)

8:42 PM
@tohecz There's a solution 3 for the index in toc:
\usepackage{imakeidx}
\makeindex[intoc]

@egreg I thought about it in connection with tocbibind, because it's not "inclusion of ToC and Index into ToC" but "inclusion of all such unnumbered chapters into ToC" what should be achieved IMHO...

@tohecz This just seems to do an indent.

@tohecz tocbibind hacks the commands \tableofcontents, \listoffigures, \listoftables, \thebibliography and \theindex, not the sectional commands.

Q: How to get correct page number of index in ToC

manjushaI am using \usepackage{madeidx} \makeindex I added entry of index in ToC with \addcontentsline{toc}{chapter}{Index} \printindex This way I can get entry of Index in ToC, how ever page number it is printing is one less than actual page number. How to get correct page number?

@FaheemMitha Yes, there is quote environment, I think it's in the LaTeX base. As for the font, italics may work, slanted font too. Some people would use small caps. But the choice depends on your sense of typography and your likes ;)

8:44 PM
@PauloCereda Does csquotes work with xr?

@FaheemMitha First time I hear about xr. :)

@FaheemMitha Why shouldn't it?

14 minutes until our session! :)

@FaheemMitha There's also the quotation environment, for longer passages, while quote is for a set of short quotations.

@lockstep The question you linked seems to make easy things complicated...

8:48 PM
@tohecz At least my answer isn't complicated: \usepackage[totoc]{idxlayout}.

@lockstep I don't argue. But I don't think that closing well and clearly-stated question as a duplicate of a complicated one is a good thing to do

@tohecz I think it's better than having two near-identical questions around.

should that be closed too? :)

@tohecz Possibly yes, though it's not specifically about the index page number. Maybe one should write a canonical question/answer.

@egreg What is the difference between the quotation environment and csquotes?

@JasperLoy If you don't put the full user name, the user does not get notified about your chat post. If you input them manually, then pressing <tab> after you type first couple letters of the nick should auto-complete it.

8:57 PM
@FaheemMitha csquotes is a package that aims to automatize the insertion of quotation marks. It doesn't provide "quotation environments". For these, apart from the standard quote and quotation, look at lockstep's quoting package.
