"You've earned the "Fanatic" badge. See your profile." :-))

9:38 AM
@Patrick Congrats! :)

Now I am a member of the "fanatic" club

It's an exclusive club: only 73 members. :)
Is it me, or the number of LyX questions is increasing these days?

10:03 AM
@PauloCereda It's not you. :-) I noticed the trend, too.

@lockstep I really hope all those LyX'ers are coming from Word and not from LaTeX. :)

Hey .. My reputation is now exactly 43,000. :-)

@lockstep Yay!

10:30 AM
Help me give this annoying bug/"feature" attention:

Q: The suggested edits review tab resets the date range preference

lunboksAs a result of me discovering this new review feature, I've been using that tool a whole lot more recently. While I was reviewing some posts in the week/month date ranges, some edits were suggested as well. I noticed that each time I switched to the suggested edits tab, the date range would rese...

11:09 AM
@lockstep Do you have a photo ;-) Some days before Martin had 55555. ;-)

@MarcoDaniel Sadly, no.

@lockstep: I can downvote a question for you ;-)

@MarcoDaniel Five times? Please, don't. ;-)

@lockstep Next time ;-)

haha

11:12 AM
@MarcoDaniel Perhaps at 44,444.

@lockstep: next plan: make you reach 43,034 :)

@PauloCereda Also nice

@PauloCereda I'd have to accept two answers for that. Or downvote an answer.

11:42 AM
Quick and dirty question: which font size should I use for beamer: 10pt or 11pt?

@PauloCereda 12pt ;-)

@MarcoDaniel Oh. :P

@PauloCereda Default is 11 ;-) For a presentation you have the golden rule: only 6 lines per frame -- and so 12pt looks good.

@MarcoDaniel Thanks, it's good to know. :) I'll stick with 11pt then. :)

12:06 PM
Who can test the example (I uses tikz csv):
\documentclass{standalone}
\usepackage{tikz}
\begin{document}
\verb+shift+
\begin{tikzpicture}
\node at (0,0) (i0){};
\node at (2,2) (i1){};
\draw[red] (i0) -- (i1);
\draw[blue](i0) -- ([xshift=2cm]i1);
%%\draw[blue] (i0) -- ([yshift=1cm]i1);
%\draw[green] ([xshift=2pt]i0) -- ([xshift=2pt]i1);
\end{tikzpicture}
\end{document}
I had expected another output ;-)

@MarcoDaniel The approach works if you use \coordinate ... to define i0 and i1, or if you supply an anchor like i0.center.

@Jake Thanks
@Jake Now I edited the answer

Q: Are there any differences between Mario and Luigi?

WipqoznAfter beating the castle of Special World 1 you unlock Luigi as a playable character. I played as him for a bit but I didn't notice any game play differences between Mario and Luigi. I remember in Super Mario Galaxy that Luigi could jump further, but he took longer to stop. Are there any differ...

" [...] the biggest difference that I've noticed though is that he wears green and that he is Mario's brother. " - I could answer that! :P

1:39 PM
@PauloCereda Obviously you're an expert!

@NN Mario games are funny. :)

2:26 PM
@egreg Should I read your comment as a slight itch to honor the site by asking a question? :)

@NN I never use spelling check. :)
2

@egreg you never misspell?

@egreg Me neither. :) But I don't use it because I don't know how to use it. :)

@NN Yes, I do; but I prefer to avoid being bothered by spelling check while I write.

@BrunoLeFloch l3regex strikes again :-) tex.stackexchange.com/questions/39831/…

2:39 PM
@egreg So you find misspelled words by reading printouts instead?
I'm just curious about people's workflow.

@NN I can run a spelling checker when I want to. It's much faster.

My first /facepalm of the year: "Funny, why doesn't beamer show numbered captions?". Then I read the manual and found \setbeamertemplate{caption}[numbered]. It was like "Dear Paulo, please RTFM." :)

@JosephWright I misread the question. Nice solution.

@egreg Do you mind if I write a full question out of your comment about AUCTeX and polyglossia then?

@NN Not at all. It can be interesting for XeLaTeX users who prefer to see red underlines here and there and to slow their typing. :)

2:53 PM
@egreg haha

@egreg I had a friend who used red underlines in his keynotes. Everybody was annoyed because they thought it was the spellchecker. :)

3:12 PM
@egreg I've been trying to work out how \pdfmatch works for a faster answer than using macro-based regex stufff. However, \pdfmatch is a bit of a nightmare to understand. For example, it seems to do an anchored match, although that is not mentioned in the pdfTeX manual.

Anyone with MikTeX knowledge here? Or maybe even just Windows.

@AlanMunn I have it installed, but I don't know a lot.

I'm trying to clear off the LyX question that was migrated. The question is from October so I doubt that the OP is around to answer questions, but I'd like to make an answer that might be useful for others. So here's my question.

What is the simplest way to verify on a Windows system that you have a TeX distribution installed?

@AlanMunn Klick ;-) Do you mean Windows 7 or XP or Vista?

@AlanMunn I'd check the %PATH% environment variable and look for MiKTeX/TeXLive entries. I know newer versions of Windows have a where command, similar to *nix which, so if I go to the command prompt and type, say, where tex, the return is C:\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.9\miktex\bin\tex.exe.

3:22 PM
@PauloCereda We are speaking about Windows
and their users
Sorry

@AlanMunn Perhaps open a command prompt and run e.g. latex -v.

@MarcoDaniel Oh. :P

On Windows 7 or Vista you can push START and type in latex The system will be search and shows the hint.

@TorbjørnT Do Windows users know about the command prompt? (This is aimed at LyX users). How do I get a command prompt in Windows?
@MarcoDaniel That sounds more promising. What hint does it show? (But I assume something else would be needed for XP?)

@AlanMunn Depends on the user I suppose ... Windows-key + R, type cmd and hit enter. (Should work on all newer versions of Windows I believe.)

3:27 PM
Does LyX install its own barebone MikTeX?
If so, it might not search the system path, but the application path.

@PauloCereda I think it does, but I don't know how recent that part of the installer is. But I think that when it does install it it installs a proper installation, not one specifically for LyX.

@AlanMunn Ah good to know. :)

Doesn't MikTeX have some GUI management program that is installed and should be found in the START menu? This would seem to be the simplest verification strategy for naive users.

@AlanMunn The same method -- Type MikTeX

@MarcoDaniel Ok. Can someone verify that that actually works?

3:33 PM
One moment I made a screenshot (My wife uses Windows)

If everything fails, I can write an exe app to look for TeX install.

@AlanMunn: Here the pictures
I use TeX LIve

@MarcoDaniel Thanks. That's perfect.

@AlanMunn But I will not install MikTeX too ;-)

@MarcoDaniel That's fine. I'll use the first image.

3:42 PM
I'm pretty sure MikTeX doesn't add itself to the path
at least, back in the day when I was on windows, I remember I had to point my IDE to the latex path in order for it to be able to compile

At the moment I must really laugh. Nobody here works with Windows ;-)

@MarcoDaniel I would rather applaud. It's a sign of sanity!

@JosephWright The pdftex manual is not very clear about \pdftexmatch.

@MarcoDaniel Also I seem to recall that even among the Windows users, there's a strong bias here to use TeXLive over MikTeX.
Thanks everyone. Now I'll go back to my Mac. :-)

@MarcoDaniel Well, I do. But I don't have LyX installed. :-)

3:57 PM
@lockstep The first one ;-) Did you want to try Ubuntu? I have it in mind.

@MarcoDaniel Can I play Civilization 5 using Ubuntu? ;-)

@MarcoDaniel I do as well, but I don't have MikTeX (other than a portable version).

@lockstep: probably, using wine

@TorbjørnT Thank God I'm not the only one.

@lockstep I don't know. I have no games -- LaTeX + wife is enough.

4:00 PM
@wh1t3 Wine? I have some at home.

@lockstep: heh, me too. Although I'm more of a beer-person myself.

@lockstep I use Linux occasionally though (dual boot).

@MarcoDaniel Civ 5 is the only game I play.

@lockstep It simulates Windows in Ubuntu. So you can install normal windows programs.

I only play Warsow which works fine on linux :)

4:05 PM
my nephew recommeds Super TuX Kart

Speaking about LyX: 22 unanswered questions right now. Maybe I should install it.

@lockstep That's not surprising. We're all pretty much anti-LyX around here, with a few exceptions. I had a student who started to use it because it was "simpler", and ended up with no end of problems. Things that were trivial to do with a regular latex become completely opaque in LyX.

Games? Wii, PS3 or XBox360?
LyX déjà vu:

4:21 PM
@AlanMunn I have the same experiences. Up to know nobody of my students became happy with this.

@MarcoDaniel LyX is the Windows of LaTeX: it tries to hide everything from the user. And just as there are expert Windows users there are also expert LyX users, but for the non-experts, the hiding isn't always beneficial.

What should one do if you flagged a post as a duplicate, but either discovered that it wasn't the duplicate you posted, or that it actually is not a duplicate anymore?
...and Happy New Year, errbody. :)

@Werner I don't think you can cancel a flag but you can write a comment stating that it is actually not a duplicate of the indicated post.

@Werner we would like to interview you in the next TeXtalk. :)

@NN Thanks... I'll correct it via comment then.

4:34 PM
@Werner I don't see a "duplicate" flag right now. What question did you flag?

1
Q: How can I draw a straight vertical accent (like textvbaraccent) over a symbol in math mode?

DejanI'm looking for the equivalent of the \textvbaraccent command for the math mode.

I originally thought, since the OP was similar to this one, and proposed a similar solution, that it was a duplicate.
1
Q: How can I draw a dot under a symbol in math mode?

DejanI'm trying to find the equivalent to \d (or \textsubdot) for the math mode.

just the close vote? That will fade away over time automatically, won't it?

@wh1t3 Yes, it's a "close vote".

@Werner That's "just" a vote to close -- I thought you were concerned about your flag weight. Never mind, your vote will expire after a while.

@lockstep Thanks. Your flag weight is something to aspire to. I'm sure you get barely nothing per "helpful" flag at the moment.
So "close votes" disappear if not corroborated?

4:38 PM
@Werner Somewhat less than 0.2.

Thanks, for reference:
"Close votes age away harmlessly after 4 days if the threshold is not reached. Each new close vote resets the timer, and close votes only start expiring if the question has had 100 views."
I'll sleep better tonight...

@Werner: TeXtalk interview? :)

@PauloCereda Me?

@Werner yes! :)

4:40 PM
@Werner You are one of my favorite candidates

@PauloCereda Sure, it sounds so formal...
@MarcoDaniel And why is that?

@Werner You are very active and one of the best spell checkers ;-)
And of course your answers are very informative

@MarcoDaniel He he... makes @egreg's comment about spell checking kinda interesting: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/2865459#2865459
@MarcoDaniel Thanks!

You don't answer like do this instead you write a small article and explain most of the things.

@Werner egreg suggested your name. :) I actually tried to call you by using the @@ syntax, but it seems to be mod-only:
19 hours ago, by Paulo Cereda
@@Werner: we would like to interview you in the next TeXtalk, if it's ok with you, of course. :)

4:43 PM
@Werner You've got a 4442 rep per month average; that's quite a figure.

@MarcoDaniel Thanks again.
@egreg Geez... what am I doing with my spare time?!

@Werner next to your garden ;-)

@PauloCereda Never new about @@ syntax. And I didn't receive any notification. Either way, I'm here now and noticed that your beard is gone.

@Werner And you're the third in rep per month average, just after me and lockstep: who are the previous interviewees?

@Werner Ah the beard was during the Christmas season, so now I'm back to normal. :)

4:46 PM
@egreg I've read @lockstep's, @MartinScharrer's and yours.
I think that's three.

@JosephWright, @MartinScharrer, @StefanKottwitz: could you unfreeze our interview room? chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/1728/textalk-interviews

@Werner Well, Martin is our lord and master. :)

I'm looking for a seagull. :P (I mean, the seagull color scheme for beamer, but I didn't find it yet) :D

@PauloCereda Where are you looking?

@Werner I'm trying texmf.

4:58 PM
@Werner Damn. There goes your good spelling reputation. :-)

@PauloCereda I found mine under: C:\texlive\2011\texmf-dist\tex\latex\beamer\themes\color
Pretty as a bird, there it sits: beamercolorthemeseagull.sty

@PauloCereda locate seagull | grep texlive/2011 tells me /usr/local/texlive/2011/texmf-dist/tex/latex/beamer/themes/color/beamercolorthemeseagull.sty

@Werner, @egreg: wow, thanks! :) That bird was smarter than me. :(
Yay, my first custom beamer theme!

@PauloCereda That's hilarious. I guess changing one black!30 to black!35 does "make it your own". :)

@Werner Don't spoil the moment. :P
This is TeX bullying. :D

5:10 PM
@PauloCereda Still is hilarious...

Hi, everyone!

@Werner I had to start somewhere, so I killed an innocent bird. :)
@GonzaloMedina Hi Gonzalo! :)

@Werner The Sorites paradox meets package writing.

iPads were not meant to write LaTeX!

@GonzaloMedina Are iPads meant for anything?

5:14 PM
@AlanMunn my daughter likes it for playing. Other than that, I haven't seen any other uses.
Well, making Apple earn money is another use for an iPad ;-)
By the way, Happy new year!

@GonzaloMedina That's what I answer when I'm asked about the usefulness of math: "It brings me a salary!"
3

@GonzaloMedina That's certainly true. Despite being a hardened Mac user, I can't figure out what I would actually do with one. (But then I also have an Android phone and not an iPhone, so maybe I'm not so hardened after all.)

@egreg hehe...

@Werner Presumably your (sic) not responsable (sic) for the spelling on the picture. :-)

5:20 PM
I have an iPod Touch and I think it's pretty awesome. But I don't know what to do with an iPhone or iPad.

@AlanMunn Come on, where did I post "your" instead of "(whatever)"? And "Responsable" - I'll fix it right now!

I once saw on television that there's a priest from Florianópolis who has an iPad and uses it during the masses with the texts from the Roman Missal. :)

@Werner No, I'm just kidding. The picture had "MAC'S" in it, so I thought I'd make my comment have the appropriate orthographic flavour.

@AlanMunn Call me slow, but I get it now. I just received that in an email...

5:41 PM
@PauloCereda The room is unfrozen.

@StefanKottwitz Thanks Stefan! :)
@Werner: the interview room is ready. :)

@PauloCereda Oh oh... where do I go?

@PauloCereda I'd better check my spelling, since Alan is around...!

@Werner Don't worry, we will get him. :) (he's the interviewees list too)

5:46 PM
@PauloCereda He he...

@Werner For me, spelling is a political act. I live and teach in the US, but my spelling remains staunchly Canadian. I even use "zed", although mainly with grad students who are aware of the issue.

I need help -- I can't believe the following result. By using `calc` the command `global` has no effect:
\documentclass{article}
\parindent0pt
%\usepackage{calc}
\def\exampletext{Text Text Text Text Text Text Text Text Text Text Text Text
Text Text Text Text Text Text Text Text Text Text Text Text Text Text Text Text
Text Text Text Text Text Text Text Text Text Text Text Text Text Text Text Text }
\fboxsep=0pt
\fboxrule=1pt
\hfuzz=\maxdimen

\begin{document}
\makeatletter
\dimen@=80pt
\begingroup
The following seems to work \setlength{\global\dimen@}{\wd\tw@}. Is this a bug?

@MarcoDaniel \global doesn't work in front of \setlength; use \global\dimen@\wd\tw@; but it's best to use odd-numbered scratch registers when doing global assignments.
It's not a bug. Simply \setlength is not thought for global assignments.

@egreg damn. Now I have to change a lot of assignments.

6:02 PM
@MarcoDaniel With your code you waste a cell of the save stack. If this is in a macro that's used several times, you risk to run out of space.

@egreg I used it only for the example. I was to lazy to define a new length and savebox ;-)

However, when \hsize is set to 8cm and you typeset a paragraph in the \vbox, its width will be 8cm!

@egreg This is my goal.
Ok the length can given by the user

6:49 PM
iPads are great for keeping the kids quiet.

Today I uploaded the new version of mdframed to github. If somebody wants to do some test I am not unhappy ;-)

Would someone flag a question with the following title: "How do I dissect a seagull?"

9:14 PM
Somebody is using a package that starts \typeout{Document Style Option uowthesis' by Mansour Esmaili <19 Nov 1995>.} \input epsf` and is wondering why it gives problems. :(

@egreg Oh my!

9:53 PM
@egreg: Jan 2nd, São Gregório. :)

10:03 PM
@PauloCereda Which one? :)
I prefer Saint Gregory the Enlightener and, of course, Saint Gregory the Great
Today's Gregory is Gregory of Nazianzus.

@egreg Ah yes. I just heard on the TV. My parents are watching the mass. :)

1 hour later…
11:14 PM
@GonzaloMedina: I owe you another drink. I was struggling with beamer for at least five hours. I was unable to change the frametitle color. I messed with all possible files. I even dissected a seagull. And this brilliant answer of yours saved the day. Thanks! :)
