Q: Patent Office-like drawings

LeeserJust wondering is there a library within TikZ that allows easy(!) drawing of the line drawings used in Patent applications (image from patent WO2011/062360 random image selected from random patent) I know this can be done in TikZ but mainly looking for the font used for numbering the arrows and t...

not sure whether this is answearable at all

@StefanKottwitz Voted for "exact duplicate".

@MartinTapankov I don't see why that is less answerable then my Cthulhu one, if more bland.
Couldn't you answer it by posting a near duplication of that drawing for them to work off of?

@JosephWright I've added one just expanding on my comment.

Oh, I found a great tool for use with BibTeX if anyone is interested: http://www.ottobib.com/ Put in a ISBN, get a BibTeX enty.
Sorry if I shouldn't distract you, but I thought you all might find it useful in future.

10:07 PM
@MartinTapankov Isn't the main question here "how to add this type of arrow"? That should be doable with a bezier curve in TikZ, I think.

@PaŭloEbermann And add a similar font I think, which usually is pretty easy.

@Canageek You can also use lead2amazon

Q: How to change the way theorems are displayed with LyX?

cyihuaThe theorems are currently all displayed in bold, but I would like to display them in small-caps. My question is much like this one. However, I am using LyX with an AMS style document class, and was not able to implement any of the suggestions in the aforementioned thread, namely because I coul...

@Marco Interesting, and that can do non-book things, though I have no idea why I would want to cite a CD.

@Canageek Why do you think on cds? You can also search for books ;-) here an example: lead.to/amazon/en/…

@Marco Oh, useful for books that don't have an ISBN in them. Typically I'm using it for a book that I have in my hands and want a citation for without doing the work, so I just type the ISBN from the copyright page into the page I linked then past that into a .bib file, often with small changes.

Q: How to enable Author - Year in text using PhDbiblio-* style?

user7806I am using \bibliographystyle{Latex/Classes/PhDbiblio-url2} available at http://openwetware.org/wiki/LaTeX_template_for_PhD_thesis. It requires the natbib package and I installed it as \usepackage[square,sort,comma,numbers]{natbib}. My problem is: since I am using PhDbiblio-* style, it avoids t...

Also whomever decided to put DOIs into a Note line (Note = "DOI: Foo") needs to be beaten with a wet pool noodle.
@lockstep I don't see the problem if it has a valid answer.

10:16 PM
@Canageek Of course the isbn is much easier it's only another tool.

@lockstep As someone whom uses ACS style I know how painful it is when nothing supports your citation style.
@Marco Options are good. You just have to be careful as I've seen mistakes on Amazon among RPG books and such a lot- Wrong version and publisher information mostly.

This looks like not a real question:

Q: How to embed LaTeX text, fonts, equations, or any LaTeX typesetting commands into a diagram.

user739807Is there away I can add LaTeX text, fonts, equations on a image. After searching around I noticed there is a PGF package however it seems I will need significantly some time to learn the package!

@Canageek Yes, but the OP's comment "It seems that some versions of natbib fail working with author-year argument" cries out for a MWE. (You could upvote Mico's answer if you think it is helpful; I'd rather close the question.)
@PaŭloEbermann Indeed.

Q: Insert Abbreviations in LyX document

Kiran ChandrashekharI would like to generate the abbreviations entry in the report written in LyX. I could not find it. I would like to know 3 things : Insert the abbreviations table in the TOC. Insert the Abbreviation list at the end of all chapters from the abbreviations defined. Define the list of abbreviati...

@locksteap Sure, close it. I'm A) A newbie here who doesn't understand a good number of the questions and B) If you can't be bothered to keep and eye on your question it can't be that imporant

Can I answer my own question if I found the solutoin or should I just close it?

@Canageek Please answer your own question.

Q: Can't compile LaTeX document when glossaries package is used (fatal error)

LexI just followed the instructions for setting up TeXnicCenter to work with the glossaries package as described at latex-community.org. I am trying to create a list of acronyms, however, I will not be using them in text. My document looks like this: \documentclass[bibtotoc,liststotoc,BCOR5mm,DIV12...

@Canageek: that way you share your knowledge

@Canageek Yes, answer. (Closing would be only for when the reason was a typo or similar.)

A: Proper way to use greek letters in an English document

CanageekOne workaround, though ugly, is to use a different PDF reader: It appears the problem is Adobe Reader. I tested this in SumatraPDF v1.8 and text copied from it to Word 2010 and GNU Emacs 23.3.1 (i386-mingw-nt6.1.7601) fine. It didn't copy to notepad++ oddly. When I used the exact same document it...

@Canageek great!

Q: How span columns in 'address field' on LyX?

I'm using LyX to write a draft, using IEEEtran document format (two columns). The problem is with the address/affiliation line, that appears only in one columns, and not spanning the two columns (like in the authors line). Any suggestions how to resolve that issue?

Q: any basic extension for open-office?

TxeI wonder if is there any extension teX for open office 3 under ubuntu 11.04.. even if it was for basic teX tasks. I got problems to set up paths links between teXlive itself and any of the editor apps related such as emacs, notepad++, etc. Big thanks.

10:49 PM
@egreg Actually, I found that I could copy a part of one of my other answers here, as it is dealing with a similar problem. (It is a great hack, though.)

blinks I got 5 upvotes on answering my own question?

@Canageek This is why you answer questions during some chat session :-p

@PaŭloEbermann I already have FAR more rep on this site that I actually deserve.

@PaŭloEbermann Add your answer! We love hacks!

@Canageek: pays off, eh? :)

@Canageek What should Martin say, then? :)

@Canageek Spend it on some bounties. :-)

@egreg Already added before I posted here ...

Like a template saying 'Here is your main body' possibly with some sort of basic text inside it, your image files go here, each chapter goes here, type of thing.

@PaŭloEbermann Already voted this way.

@lockstep I'd say you could give it an answer of 'Not one that anyone has heard of, since most people use all standard libraries with their distribution' if no one here has heard of such a thing.

Q: pdfTex Miktex/Tex Live 2010 version difference

pannyWe are having difficulties running PDF-XChange Viewer with pdflatex. With configuration MiKTeX the viewer works fine but with TeX Live 2010 the viewer crashes on windows xp sp3. Any ideas what the difference in 3.1415926-1.40.11-2.2 3.1415926-2.3-1.40.12 could be that makes one crash the other ...

@lockstep I guess the comments contain the answer

@lockstep Rather I'd turn that comment that you can't do an update and have to reinstall into an answer instead, as that negates the need to answer the first part.

@Canageek Add a CW (Community wiki) answer and you have my upvote.
And only 160 unanswered questions left. :-)

@lockstep How on earth do I do that? Also I took that from the comments. Wasn't sure if I was just being lazy when did the same upgrade he did.

11:21 PM
There are also a number of good answers in the comments, but no one wrote them up as answers for some reason.

@lockstep I can do that

Someone by the handle of Jasper

@Canageek happens all the time
@Canageek mind if I do that?

Good night! It seems that I'm starting to feel today's 700 km. :)

@CountZero of course!

11:23 PM
@Canageek thx :)

@Canageek People are too modest, or feel that their comments are not a full answer. Or similar.

I just thought it seemed a shame to close a question that had actually been answered.
@PaŭloEbermann It started as a discussion, then someone found the answers and didn't break off to write it up. yeah, I can see how that would happen.

@lockstep CW answer done
@Canageek adding a CW answer is like adding a regular answer, only you check the 'community wiki' box below the answer text

@CountZero I'd also edit your answer to specify that, as in the comments, this fixed the problem. Possibly link to the comment?

@CountZero Upvoted -- will earn you a "Revival" badge. ;-)

@lockstep aaah great! :)

@CountZero It's not as great as adding one's own answer after more than 30 days, but still ... :-)

@lockstep guess you're right, but that's my first badge of that kind :)

Huh, I just had a crazy idea. Is there a way to make pageless LaTeX? Instead of just sizing the paper for a computer screen making the entire document one page.... PDF probably wouldn't support it though.

@Canageek edited, hope you like it better :)

@CountZero If I'd not already upvoted you once I'd do it again ^^

11:38 PM
@Canageek :D

Also is there a way to hide \section{foo} commands from the output? I'm liking them for keeping my thoughts organized in this essay, but history essay style as I've been taught it doesn't have them. I guess I could just comment them out at the end.

OK, time to say "Good night"!

@lockstep \begin{good night} :)

@CountZero You forgot to load \usepackage{CommonExpressions} before using that.

@Canageek guess I'm too sleepy myself :)
@everybody: time to say good bye
been a swell experience

Before you all go: How many did you get through?

@Canageek at the beginning of the session there were 192 unanswered questions. Now there are 157 (without upvoted answers) or 139 without any answer. Including some new, of course.

@StefanKottwitz That is pretty impressive. I wish I could help more, but I hang around here more to learn by watching.
I've found some of the best practices articles very useful.

@Canageek Watching and learning is already a good start. Answering is not all.
Good new questions are also useful.
And improving older content and voting on quality content you see.
Or writing tag wikis.

@StefanKottwitz I actually asked my Cthulhu question in part because I wanted enough reputation to upvote thing. I then got enough on RPG.SX for answering some questions really well (THERE I have enough experience to help out) including some upvotes for a specific answer to a 6 month old open question. ^^.

Answering is sometimes hard. as good answers appear here often quickly.
