@jtbandes I'm not familiar with history (if any) of the rules but I do vaguely recall someone here in chat mentioning CW in connection with the challenge. Memorable because the expression CW meant nothing to me, and I had to ask what was meant by the letters.
Apple's talagent(8) OS X Manual Page (2010-09-01, long before Lion was released) mentions but does not define the Transparent App Lifecycle feature.
Some time before Lion was released, I understood that the TAL comprised:

@patrix yeah, that's an obscure question (and I don't like answering my own questions as often as I have recently) but it's something that's niggled me for the past year or so. I'd like to be accurate.

@DanielLawson Thanks! And a big thanks to whoever initiated and sponsored the contest.
@stuffe It's my only choice actually. Keyboard and MM I already have, a Superdrive I don't need. But I've been curious for quite some time now how a trackpad works with a desktop machine anyway so I'm looking forward to give it a try.
@jrg In the case of most apps I would say, 'Great! Now it'll be expanded and improved faster.' But in the case of TextMate it seems more likely that it will just be abandoned :(
That said, Chocolat is out of beta and very nice, so I'm pretty much okay with ^.
