5:08 PM
Asalamu wa alaikum

Wa alaykum assalam @DanAndrews

what is the difference between "Salam Alaykum aall" and "Asalamu wa alaikum"

aall is all.. but it is a typo..
it is all the same. different accents or simply sometimes it is hard to write arabic in eglish litters since we have more letters, so people become creative..

ah. Just like I see, "As'salamu wa alaikum" and "Asalamu wa alaikum" etc

yup
but do not use 'wa' in the middle.. it has nothing there..
it is wrong actually.. i do not know why alummat is using it.. only him writes it that way

5:15 PM
As-Salāmu `alaykumu is most proper?

yup..

for this chat room

The original word is: Al-Salam Alaykum. but because of few grammar rules it is pronounced "Assalamu Alaykum"

got it

Semitic languages are much different than the European languages.

5:18 PM
yes, simple "Salām" is used in the mosque in my area

salam is short cut
the whole greeting is: "Assalamu Alaykum wa rahmatu allahi wa barakatuh"
you can see how long it is :)

I went to the mosque in my area, everyone greeted with "Salam" Maybe someone said, "Assalamu Alaykum wa rahmatu allahi wa barakatuh" but I didn't understand.

but people usually say "Salam Alakum" or "Assalamu alaykum"... some even make it shorter, specially when talking to friend or in non official use
it means "Peace be upon you, and god's mercy and his blessings as well"
any way, Arab christians use "Salam" as well..
specially Coptics..

"Peace be with you" is how Christians greet each other in church

it is the same almost..

5:22 PM
sometimes just "Peace"

Arab christians use same words as muslims in general when they talk about religion..

The religions are the same... almost... It's the small differences that divide us the most.

exactly.
I have a belief. there is not religion asks its followers to be bad or to do bad deeds.. Evil is from humans..

I think we just need more communication between the common people.

@DanAndrews Well, it works pretty straight forward, The simplest version is "salam" and then it's recommended if someone greets you with it, you reply with a longer version like "assalamu alaykum" and a longer version if someone said the latter "assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatoh" and so on.

5:25 PM
@HaLaBi you have a good point. God wants us to love each other and get along - and worship him. What is not this way is what we did (it is not his will)

@DanAndrews Are you Christian?

exactly.. God gave us the tools (the books) to help us know the right from wrong. If we did not follow it is not because God asked us not to... but because we do not want to!

I consider myself "Christian" but I don't like the modern Christianity that is popular today. I believe in one God

oooooh
how come?

home come what?
how come what?

5:27 PM
thats interesting.. are you simply saying you believe in the same Christianity in Dan Brown's book... the davinci code?

I'm not familiar with the type of Christianity in Dan Brown's book.
I am familiar with the "feel good" Christianity that is popular right now. Where anyone can do anything and they are still "saved"

@DanAndrews Do they believe in more than one God nowadays?

ok if i remember well, it says that catholics have messed up with christianity and change major concepts.. the real chrisitanity has one god.. stuff like that i forgot exactly..
they believe in trinity..

@Gigili I have a hard time with the Trinity

3=1
are there recognized churches that believe in one god??

5:30 PM
yes, the metaphor is that of water. Water can be a liquid, gas, or solid. It can also be all three at one time under the right pressure and temp.
There are two different types of Christians, Unitarian and Trinitarian.

ok, can you name the famous schools/churches of both divisions?

@DanAndrews Can it? There's something wrong with the reasoning.

Unitarian believe that the three are distinctly different. But that Jesus was sent from God the father and is the logos incarnate.
Where the Trinitarians believe the 3 is one.
I'll look for some examples @HaLaBi
@Gigili Can it? Sure it can, in chemistry you can prove it. But does that apply to God? I don't know. that is why I say that I have trouble with the trinity.

We muslims have a really hard time understanding the trinity.. so you can imagine how it is to believe in it..

@DanAndrews It can't be all three at the same time, or I'm missing a point.

5:37 PM
I believe in the teachings of Jesus as I read them from the Bible or even sometimes the Qur'an (I haven't completed the whole book). And I live my life that way. To help others. He said to love my neighbor as myself. He did not say love my neighbor as myself if and only if he believes the same as me.

nice

@gigili It can be all three at the same time - or not any of them. I'll find the name of it. I don't think it applies to God though.
The Gospel of Mark 12:29 “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.[c] 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’[d] 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[e] There is no commandment greater than these.”
There Jesus did not speak to himself. :D

we have a very similar Hadith..
@DanAndrews you are right...

Well, that's why I hate physics!

5:42 PM
:D
I tried to open minds here but was unsuccessful: christianity.stackexchange.com/questions/8057/…
I tried to show distinction
@HaLaBi Where is the Hadith that is similar?

@DanAndrews Very well asked, I like the question.

let me find it

But alas, those kind of questions cannot be answered properly.
You meant to ping Dan, I guess.

hey guys created an advert for islam se

where?

5:47 PM

@Gigili yes.. :D
@DanAndrews sunnah.com/urn/173210

@HaLaBi wait!!!!
my nets slow

can i tell my comments?

@HaLaBi thanks, it is very similar

even if it is negative?

5:48 PM
@Ashu Cool.

@HaLaBi obvious
i need to improve

of course!

thus i need comments

@DanAndrews I mean about the logo..
@DanAndrews the comments for you will follow later
@Ashu it is nice.. but the dark color gives a dark impression..

It looks like my moon and star question! :D

5:49 PM
I wish you make the background lighter.. you know religion and light always comes together....

i could not find a better background

@DanAndrews no it is about trinity ;)

find one for me plz

I do not know anything about graphics.. I only know paint..

i'll do the whole thing again then

5:50 PM
it is nice.. just the background color.. I love the design..

I like the palette Ashu

Photoshop can do the change...
any way I think you better wait for more feedback..

I think you did a good job. However maybe lighter is better. But dark looks more bold.

im thinking of adding a QR code below the poster on the bottom right

yup thats nice..

5:51 PM

and also move the link lower a little..

can someone checks if it works

checked.. it works

thanks !!!

Peace and blessings be with you, until next time.

5:56 PM
@DanAndrews ok dan.. see you soon inshallah.. god bless you..

@dynamic Re this Meta answer of yours: Only a handful of sites have automatic question bans (SO, MSO, Programmers and another one I forget), so the only way to deal with a user continually posting crap questions is for a moderator to suspend them. And that doesn't always works <sigh>

6:18 PM
assalaamu 'alaykum

@goldPseudo wa alaykum assalam Johnathan..

6:36 PM
@AhmedHan Comments are not an appropriate place to argue and debate.

7:03 PM
@YannisRizos Huh. Didn't know that :P.
Fixed it now.
@YannisRizos Weird seeing you here

@Dynamic I was going to ping you on the Whiteboard, but that wouldn't make sense for a Meta Islam answer... Then I thought of posting a comment, but I'd have to create an account here, something that I wouldn't want to do for a beta site I'm not participating in (no reason to have dead user accounts around).

@goldPseudo OK, I would like to discuss it in chat, but not tonight. I have an exam tomorrow night. If remind me tomorrow, it is OK for me.

7:43 PM
Does Islam believe in a personal Satan/devil? http://islam.stackexchange.com/questions/1291/does-islam-believe-in-a-personal-satan-devil?atw=1 #iblees

8:23 PM
appears in a cloud of smoke
where's @Flimzy?

Howdy

hey, it's you
what a coincidence :)

Yes, it is I.

So, your question about hadith, I think it's answered already

I was hoping you could shed a bit more light on that hadith you mentioned...

8:25 PM
do you want a super high-level "what on earth is hadith"?
or was it that specific hadith?

that specific one... what does it mean to follow Christians and jews footstep by footstep

this is going to be long, feel free to interrupt me anytime

hehe, okay

starting at 50,000 feet in the air, Islam is the third of three divine "book" religions (revealed directly from God, through prophets)
these three are Judaism (first), Christianity (second), and Islam (third)
this is why all three share so many parallels -- like "Sunday service" (Friday in Islam), prohibition on alcohol, women covering for modesty, etc.
with me so far?

sounds good so far

8:27 PM
so going back to 50k feet, Islam has five high-level goals (maqaasid ash-shari'ah, I believe they're called)
preservation of human life, intellect, deen (religion / way of life), wealth, and ... I can't remember #5

yes correct @ashes999

so among the preservation of deen, we see a bunch of different ahadith ("hadiths") and rulings
like one that says "don't be like the jews and christians, trim your mustache and grow your beard."
still making sense?

ok

the missing is preservation of offspring,,,

oh right, lineage
+1 @HaLaBi

8:30 PM
is it offspring?? don't know what word to use in english.. in arabic it is Nasl (نسل)

so this hadith, the text of it is essentially
"You (Muslims) will follow the Christians and Jews footstep by footstep, even if they were to (do something crazy like) crawl into a lizard hole."
(I'm done lol)

Ah, so it's saying Muslims will stray, just as Christians and Jews do/have?

I think it means "you will cut your religion to pieces and drop it piece by piece, the same way that they did."
I was sitting through the Friday Khutbah today, and the imam mentioned a related hadith: "This deen will be (torn to pieces), the first piece will be ruling by the Qur'an and Sunnah, and the last piece will be salaah (prayer)"

So is individual interpretation of scripture not permitted in Islam? Are only "high-level officials" to interpret it?

yes and no; it depends.
if the interpretation is intended as a means of deriving rules of law (fiqh), then you need to be a "mujtahid" for that.
(see my related question: what are the conditions of a scholar who's allowed to be a mujtahid?)
if you're interpreting to extract lessons and apply it to your life, you're welcome, whatever level your Islam is.

8:34 PM
Interesting.

Islam also encourages "tadabbur," which means pondering deeply on the lessons, stories, etc. in the Qur'an.

So anyone can interpret for themselves... but they're held to a higher standard if they wish to impose their interpretation upon others... in a nut shell

I don't think I understand what you mean by "interpret for themselves"

lets say... hmmm... I'll use my earlier question for example... I'm debating whether to borrow money from my 401(k)...
I could read scripture to come to a conclusion for myself...
but if I want to offer advice to someone else on the same issue, I'd need to be mujtahid first?

that's a fiqh question (deriving law)
so in your case, or my case, as someone not qualified to make ijtihad (not a mujtahid), we would be sinful for deriving our own laws
if we were scholars, we could do it, sure.

8:37 PM
okay... so regardless of whether I'm asking for my own sake, or the sake of someone else, it's still fiqh

otherwise, we defer to our scholars.
yes, if it's fiqh

alright

makes sense?

thanks for explaining
I think so.

glad to be of service :)
I keep repeating this: Islam is a religion of knowledge. Everything depends on knowledge.
If you don't know, research, and ask people who DO know :)

8:38 PM
In Christianity, the only mainline sect that might agree that "Bible cannot be interpreted by any but high-level officials" would be Catholicism. Most or all protestants would disagree with that.

even if it's for deriving fiqh?

And most Catholics probably would, too, in word... but in deed, many Catholics tend to behave as though only priests, bishops, etc, can interpret scripture.
Christianity doesn't have a concept of fiqh, as far as I know.

by fiqh, I mean deriving law

There are certainly aspects of "law" in Christianity... but I think it's quite a bit different than the concept of fiqh you're talking about.
In a lot of ways, modern Christianity is more a religion of conscience than of "law".... Paul spoke a lot in the new testament about being free from law.

fascinating...

8:41 PM
That is to say, from a Christian perspective, if one is living according to the will of God, he will by nature do what is right
and won't need the law to guide him.
that's a very very general generalization by the way

obviously :)
so how do any two Christians agree on anything?
Like that modern issue of homosexuality -- to allow or abolish it

There's a saying I love...
I think originally from St. Augustine
"In essentials, unity; In non-essentials, liberty; In all things, charity"

awesome :)

Most Christians agree to a fairly small set of "essential" doctrines... 1) God created the universe and all that exists, 2) Humans have sinned, 3) Christ is both God and Man, 4) Christ died to pay for our sins, 5) Christ rose again.
Depending on the sect, there may be a few more or few less items on that list.

Rose, or will rise?

8:45 PM
rose

oh, Easter?

But no official Christian group I'm aware of would say that homosexuality is an essential.
right, on Easter.

so if I may ask, what's your interest in Islam.SE anyway?

Many people act as though homosexuality is an essential... that is to say, they behave as though someone who is homossexual is doomed to hell.
But I'm not aware of any official Christian doctrines held by any major groups that say homosexuals cannot be saved. Homosexuals are sinners, just like everyone else, and play by the same rules.

Yeah.

8:46 PM
Which moves the debate of homosexuality into the "non-essential" category... it's obviously heavily debated... but Christians ought to agree that it's not essential for Christianity

ditto in Islam, incidentally.
(about sinners)

Now most Christiians believe homosexual acts are sinful, some do not. It's much harder to come to a consensus on that.
As for my interest... I know very little about Islam, but I'm curious.

@flimzy, are you Unitarian or Trinitarian?

I am trinitarian
Why?

because Unitarian Christians find it easier to understand Islam.. because we will have same ground..

8:50 PM
Unitarians are considered heretics by many other Christians :)
They're a bit of a minority, too.
I'm not sure it's a very meaningful distinction, though.
I think it's kind of splitting hairs.

what about copts?
the egyptians... they are very ancient.. and they are Unitarians I guess...

I don't know anything about them.
I guess the practical difference between Unitarians and Trinitarians is the question of whether Christ was divine.... and that point matters.

yup
thats actually the main point between muslims and most christians... plus the death of jesus..

But more generally, the debate between one God versus a Triune God is less important.

for muslims it is important.. because we strictly believe there is one god.. has no other form.. just god..

8:54 PM
How does Islam respond to the "Liar, Lord, or Lunatic" question, as posed by C.S. Lewis?

any way. if you look for similarities... they are much more..

Christianity believes in only one God as well. :)

got to dash, talk to you guys later

(with some notable exceptions like Mormonism)

salams @HaLaBi
Bye @Flimzy

8:54 PM
later @ashes999, thanks for your time

any time @Flimzy
:)

Maybe I should pose that as a site question...

@ashes999 وعليكم السلام
I am reading about it
thats why I'm late in replying ;)

okay :)

I never heard of it.. but i am sure scholars have..
but it is interesting :)
I mean, you gotta chose.. Liar, Lord, or Lunatic....

8:57 PM
Indeed.. and there is a fourth option, too...

which is?

And that is that the record is horribly inaccurate
and Christ never made those claims.

mmmm what claims exactly?
that he is god?

Right.

assalaamu alaykum

8:58 PM
@goldPseudo وعليكم السلام
well.. thats seriously intersting..
ok, now i know how muslims think about it

looks like i just caught an interesting conversation.

very intersting..

Did you find a link?

we believe, Muslims.. that the current Bible is been manipulated...
So, we go with the fourth option..
a link for what exactly?

Hmmm, okay
no, your answer was sufficient
I thought maybe you found a link with an explanation

9:00 PM
not really.. Still looking
but it will be a good question..

I think I'll write up a question then.

now this is the second theory i hear today about trinity..
the first one was about the water.. the water can be in three forms... liquid, gad and solid... same with trinity.. the god is in three forms.. but at the end it is one god.. in short: 1=3 and 3=1

I hate that analogy of the trinity

the second one is liar lord thing...

i'm still not convinced that the bibl has been 'manipulated'. i should post a questoon inre that one of these days.
asking whence that belief originated

9:03 PM
@goldPseudo there is a prrof from Quran.. we muslims believe int (including you)
you can read arabic johnathan.. right?

not very well.

ok, I will give you the links

Q: How do Muslims respond to C.S. Lewis's "Lord, Liar or Lunatic" argument?

FlimzyChristian author and apologist C.S. Lewis, is famous, among other things, for posing the Lord, Liar, or Lunatic argument, in favor of the divinity of Christ. The cliff-notes version is: Jesus said he was God. This leaves three logical possibilities: Jesus was a lunatic, on par with someone w...

Question posted...

+1
you want short answer?
or long answer?

Both are always nice :)
TLDR at top for the short one... then the long one to follow up

9:10 PM
i generally fall into the 'be careful about taking what Jesus says too literally' camp.

@goldPseudo: Do you mean you believe the record is unreliable? Or Jesus was unreliable?

i mean the interpretation is unreliable.
jesus is known for speaking in parable and metaphor.

one more important point, the bible has been translate many times during the last 2000 years.. and a translation of a translation might caused some problems..

But it hasn't.
All of our modern translations are translated from the original language.
Portions of the King James Bible were translated from Latin... rather than from the original... (If I remember correctly)
But that was 400 years ago
modern translations don't have that issue.

9:16 PM
this is what i heard. i am sure your information is more reliable

It is true that we don't have the original manuscripts...
The bible has been transcribed many times from the original
but that's quite different than translated

a friend here earlier gave me a link to a post in chritianity.se.. it was about a verse in the bible where Jesus talks about God. and then the guy asks how come he is god, and he is talking about other god... something like this.. it was intersting also..

@goldPseudo: It doesn't sound to me like he's speaking in parable there...

i'm on phone right now. can't really look at links.

@HaLaBi: Did you say you had already posted a question about the reliability of Christian scriptures? Or were going to perhaps?
@goldPseudo: No problem

9:21 PM
thats Johnathan...

ah, right
I would love to see a question about that, too... I'll wait to see if he posts one before I do.

go ahead if you want. i won't be off work for hours yet.

i will ask it..

Thanks for the nice chat guys... I'm going to get back to work now :)
talk again later

9:44 PM
@Flimzy see you. take care :)

1 hour later…
10:46 PM
Can you answer this? If devils are locked up in Ramadan how is that some Muslims still sin during the month? http://islam.stackexchange.com/questions/1300/if-devils-are-locked-up-in-ramadan-how-is-that-some-muslims-still-sin-during-the?atw=1 #sin

11:08 PM
Asalamu wa alaikum

wa 'alaykum assalaam

how was your day?

i was up too late last night writing my meta post. didn't get a good sleep at all :(
probably just gonna go home when i'm done work and veg out.

You are always at work :) don't you take rests?

i only work about eight hours a day. that's fairly normal :p

11:17 PM
oh

occasionally i put in a few extra hours, so i can leave early on Fridays.
(by 'leave early' i mean 'take an extra long lunch break so i can attend jumuah')

:)
I just got home from Juma, the Kutbah was good
it was about Ramadan, and preparing for it.

missed the early bus, so didn't get to listen to the khutbah today. barely got there in time to catch the first rakah.

@goldPseudo oh, that is a sad
did you find out what the Kutbah was about?

no clue.

11:23 PM
ok
so are you prepared for Ramadan?

may or may not be going on vacation right when it starts. still need to finalize the plans for that.
haven't decided if i'm going to fast while i'm travelling.
going to visit my sister down in BC, God willing.

BC?

i usually don't have a problem with fasting, but i think this is the first time i've ever had to fast in July. long days up here.
British Columbia. western-most province of Canada.

ok
I thought you meant the BC that they put after the dates :P

fajr starts around 3:30 am here. maghrib is around 10:00 pm.
so that's ~18.5 hours of fasting.

11:30 PM
that sounds long
were you are going, is it hot?

it can be.

that might make it harder, is it hot and humid or just hot?

it's a dry heat.
lots of clay banks in the area. when it gets dry, it gets very dry.
even though there's a lake nearby.
if it does rain, it's not so bad.
God knows what the weather will be like when I get there.

are you planning to do the ten last days?

God willing.

11:38 PM
Insha'Allah
You know, this is just a suggestion, but I like to remind myself of the spiritual benefits of fasting, and especially Ramadan, it helps me to get motivated perhaps it might work for you, this is only a suggestion.

i prefer not to think of any benefits of fasting ever.

why?

i fast in obedience to God, because He commands it. if i start thinking of benefits, there's a chance i'll start fasting for those benefits instead of because it's God's command.

Oh, ok your smart :)
