12:00 AM
and i believe there is one more
will take a look later tonight inshaAllah

Ok, I am awaiting answers :)

I suggest that you add opinion to your questions
so it would be what other opinions are there?

I don't have my own opinion on this subject, I am completely clueless :)
and I already quoted what ashes's opinion was.

no that is not what I meant
let me ask you,
@yasar11732 are you asking for the opinions, or the possible root words, or are you asking for both?

I think other possible root words are the opinions of people. So I guess both.

12:07 AM
i would reword it a bit to make clear that you're looking for scholarly opinions. i'm suggesting an edit right now.
please review (and accept if it suits you)

Thanks for edit, accepted.

i don't think there would be much confusion with the question as originally phrased, but it was a bit close to "Hey, everybody, what's your opinion on the root word of Allah?"
this way, it's more clear that you're looking for specific opinions, rather than just any old.

@goldPseudo Yes, we should avoid that :)
@goldPseudo I agree.

13 questions over 24 hours.

I think it is good?

12:22 AM
still a pretty good number, considering how early we are in building up a community.

I am about to ask a new one :)

haven't quite broke 300 visitors per day yet.
God willing, by the time we're up to 1500 visitors per day, we'll have more than enough questions asked.

How long that usually takes?
I mean getting 1500 visit per day.

no clue. it's very site-dependent.

What do I tag a "is this helal or haram" question with?
fiqh?

12:27 AM
i'm honestly not sure what we're using for that.
we should really do a meta post on that.
seems to be popular.

Ok, after I ask my question, you can link to that :)
Here is my question (all edits are welcome)
0
Q: Is sport challanges for a reward Halal?

yasar11732Consider couple of friends gathered and organized a football match where losers would buy drinks for winners. Is this kinds of challanges considered halal? I am confused because it might be like gambling, on the other hand, there is a challange and effort.

hrm...that needs rewording, but at work, so I can't really fix it right now.
"reward" is the wrong term for the situation described.

I fixed a couple of typis

@goldPseudo My English is far away from being perfect.

@yasar11732 oh it is ok, the typis where simple
I make the same mistakes some times :)

12:35 AM
Sure, I edited the title too.

wow :P I did not notice that one :)

What is correct word for reward?

it's more of a stake than a reward.
Stake (verb): Gamble (money or something else of value) on the outcome of a game or race.
reward would be more like if you join a tournament, and they give something to the winner.

0
Q: Are sport challanges for a stake considered Halal?

yasar11732Consider couple of friends gathered and organized a football match where losers would buy drinks for winners. Is this kinds of challenges considered halal? I am confused because it might be like gambling, on the other hand, there is a challenge and effort.

How is it now?

better.

12:51 AM
if the games for horses or eagles it is allowed
birds with claws or animals with hoofs
like horse races.. or falcon hunting sports.. they are allowed..

So, no eating and drinking material allowed as stake?

ok
here is the thing..

@yasar11732 I reworked the grammar a bit.

@goldPseudo Thanks, accepted.

the sport has to be one of three types..
animal racing, animals with hoofs.. like horses..
or birds with claws.. like eagles or falcons.. such as sports where people hunt with falcons or eagles..
third type is shooting.. like spears or guns i assume..
"No stake is acceptable except in archery, racing a camel, and racing a horse."

12:59 AM
What if questions wasn't spesific on sports. For example, if I challange my friend to video game contest or who reads faster constest?
is it still apply?

sorry.. no claws... not the eagle or falcons.. i said it by mistake.
it is not allowed.. haram
lately, they allowed Quran contests

who are "they"?

one major interpretation i'm aware of is that, as the three exceptions mentioned in the above hadith all have advantages in jihad, then by analogy any event which can have advantages in jihad can be staked.

if the reward is from a sponsor.. some one else other than the racers.. then it is halal

yeah, that's why i insisted the question explicitly mention stakes, rather than reward. very different rulings.

1:04 AM
to make it short.. if the money if from you or your friend.. it is Maysar.. which is Haram..
if you and your friend will race and the winner will be rewarded by me for example.. it is not maysar and it is halal..

@goldPseudo If so, can we say car racing for stake is halal by analogy?

@goldPseudo Exactly.. but people mix up easily in this..

To sum up, stakes generally haram, reward generally ok_

depends on the type of race, i would think (personal opinion). there's a lot more practical skill involved with a cross-country race than there would be in a circuit race, for example.

1:05 AM
yup.. there are exceptions of course..

something like a martial arts competition, i would say applies.
one could argue for football, since it builds physical strength, endurance, and reflexes.

well, if the reward is from a sponsor.. it is halal...
either it is football or whatever sport..
we used to do something haram when i was a kid.. but didn't know..
we used to collect money from all kids.. and we make football game.. the winner takes the money..
Harammmmmmm
but we didn't know.. god will forgive us inshallah

there's a bit of a gray area for paying to enter a tournament, where the prize is awarded by sponsor.

Technically, it is same as stake I think.

don't know
man, mashallah you are a scholar.. how come?

1:09 AM
i'm hardly a scholar. i just read a lot and actually remember a good chunk of it later.

well, what if the money to enter is used to arrange the tournament??? like fixing a place for the race ...etc
Mashallah
@goldPseudo r u muslim by birth??? or a convert?

i accepted Islam when i was in my teens.

Mashallah

@HaLaBi I guess people call it revert.
7
Q: Why are converts to Islam called reverts?

Badger GirlI have noticed that when a person converts from one religion to Islam it is said that he or she reverted. This is said even when it is the first time he or she embraces Islam as a religion. Why is this?

ok, didn't know that..

1:11 AM
Me neither :)

i don't like that term, personally.

revert or convert?

revert.
or convert, really. i didn't "convert" to anything. i learned about Islam, and accepted it.

mashallah

sorry to interrupt but can you look at this @goldPseudo forum.islam.com/questions/6037/…

1:12 AM
nngh. too long. bad formatting.
someone needs to learn how to write legibly.

Well I am asking for a summery :)

ok,, i have a new name instead of revert or convert... acceptor

How about Mumin? :)

@goldPseudo but I was trying to show you the question itself, sorry I should have clarified, but my question is, what should be done if a question like this appears on this site?
I would think it would be flagged as offensive or something
a troll?

it is not a question. close it.
2
it is proselytizing, pure and simple. not a very good job of it either.

1:16 AM
ok

i would delete it myself.

don't worry your self
ok sorry guys if I interrupted the conversation

if we got that question here, i would give it the whole trifecta of downvote (for bad writing), close (not-a-real-question), and flag (it-is-spam).

:)

1
Q: Should we close boring/trivial questions?

yasar11732Quoting from here Close boring, trivial, mindless, uninteresting, etc. questions. It's taken me a long time to get here, but your really need to shut down any question that wastes your top-users time and energy. Flag these questions. Vote to close when you get the privilege. Comment....

On Podcast #58, Joel and I had a disagreement. Not the first, and certainly won’t be the last:

Joel says that the only bad simple question is a duplicate simple question. I say simple questions are OK as long as they’re actually interesting (in some way) for other users to consider and answer. To prove his point, Joel actually asks the question on Stack Overflow: How do I move the turtle in LOGO? Do you think this question adds value?

We still have this disagreement. Our community is now struggling with the very same issue across multiple network sites: …

Mr.TAMERI think not everybody is interested (or have just-in-case time) to read the whole answer (which contain Ayas, Hadiths, mental trail, etc...), there are many people who may need to get a quick answer for their questions (maybe because they're in a hurry at the same moment). Well, since the commun...

@MrTAMER Good one.
Salaam.
I couldn't agree more.
But the part about providing a summary of the answer in the beginning is not a good idea.
One still needs to scroll down two or three pages to see other answers.
Well, I'll post an answer then.

Yes, that'll be better than losing ideas in the chat :)

it is nice... I love that guy alot

@MrTAMER Thank you for the opinion, I am also felt it was too long. But, I wanted it to be persuasive to the reader rather than direct yes or no.. answers to islamic questions are different from the other question, where it is either correct or wrong with provable facts.
I have shortened it a bit

Guys, What is Mawlid in english?

Mawlid

same?

yup

0
Q: Is celebrating te "Mawlid day" Halal or Haram?

HaLaBiIn my community, we used to celebrate the birth day of Mohammed (PBUH). In the past 30 or so years a lot of people start saying this is haram. Many people stopped doing it for many reasons but mainly not because they said it is haram but because the people who prohibit it are really bothering the...

Oh..no

12:56 PM
no what?

Nothing

ok...

Mawlid usuallly gets into debates

thats why I described the way I mean it. not in general.

@HaLaBi @Ershad: Sorry guys, I'm just facing electricity difficulties

1:00 PM
You could harvest your own electricity :P

sorry to hear that tamer..

just kidding
power cuts are common in india in summer.. don't you guys get it? why feel sorry for power cuts

because in Tamer's case it is because of the conflicts..

Ah.. okay

for us here, we stopped having power cuts years ago..
we have connected the electricity network with the surrounding countries.. that helped all of us..

1:03 PM
surrounding countries? so you share electricity?

@Ershad whats the speed of electricity?? light speed??? sound speed?
yup.. our electricity networks are connected together.. for example, we need extra electricity now, we borrow from any network that has extra... some other time they borrow if we have extra...

depends on the electromotive force.. that is difference between voltage at two points

ok..

or potential difference
let me given an example.. if water flow from very high pressure to low pressure.. the velocity of water will depend strongly on the pressure difference between them
electricity is similar
instead of pressure we have voltage..

okkkkkkkkkkkkkk
i get it now...
but of course speeds are much faster than water

1:09 PM
yes.. and also it depends on the medium it goes through.. like copper or aluminium... because the property of material is resistance.. which resists the flow of electricity and makes it slow

ok.. nice to know

assalaamu 'alaykum

is this question of mine legit?

Q: Boyfriends and girlfriends in Islam

AshuAre we allowed to have boyfriends/ girlfriends in Islam. I mean take the person os the opposite gender out for lunch or dinner, interact with them, etc

Asalamu wa alaikum

Wa Alaikum Salam
@Ashu If Robert thought It is not, than probably not. He knows better in this things.

the question has been reworded since it was closed.

ummm yeah (i was just typing that)

1:40 PM
"boyfriends/girlfriends" is a weak term; it's hard to tell exactly what it means in the context. the question is still a bit too vague to be well-answered.

what should it be then?

i think if you described an actual situtation, it would be better.
rather than a general ruling on everything that could be "boyfriend/girlfriend"

well i have no "actual sitaution". i would just like a a general ruling

even then, asking about an actual situation would get a better answer.
"Would it be permissible for me to go out for lunch or dinner with a person of the opposite gender?"

k seems fine
il do that
"Would it be permissible to take a person of the opposite gender out for lunch/dinner to kow more about him/her. I mean if I like his/her ideologies, way-of-life etc I would go on to marry him/her.
Is that permissible?"

Will this do
@goldPseudo

1:52 PM
good question.

thanks

(a lot of slashes. i may rework the grammar a bit for clarity, but the question is sound.)
i voted to reopen. needs four more votes (or a diamond mod) before it's open.

there is also tanzil.net, just a bonus site :)

Thanks.

your welcome :)

4:01 PM
@AlUmmat What site do you use for searching Hadith?

sunnah.com I use it to copy the hadiths and paste them since I am online, I do not take the time to write them :)

4:18 PM
I am looking for an Hadith, but can't find it :/

tell me what it is, I will be glad to help you :)

I know it is from Bukhari, and was something like "eat, drink, give sadaka, and wear, but don't waste"
It is how much I remember

which book is it in?
do you remember?

No :/

so do you know what the main idea of the hadith was, aside from what you gave above
?

4:22 PM
wasting is not good
Use whatever Allah gave you, but not in a wastefull way.
It might be in the book about dressing.
In Turkish version, it gives this -> (Buhari, Libas 1; İbnu Mace, Libas 23.) (17:42)
But I don't know what those numbers mean.
Buhari = Bukhari in Turkish.

wait :) I will get it for you than I will tell you what they mean :)
what is "İbnu Mace"?

I don't know, maybe a scholar like Bukhari?
It means "son of Mace"

ok

he means ibn majah

@Ansari so Ibnu Mace is Ibn Majah?

4:32 PM
yes the turkish c --> j for us

ok thank you for your help

sunnah.com/bukhari/77 - @yasar11732 this is kitab al-libas of sahih al-bukhari
77 hadith - feel free to go through it to find the one you're looking for

This one doesn't have translation

it appears to be a repeat of the hadith 2 above it

it is not a hadith, one thing to keep in mind is that sunnah.com is still being developed so there might be some errors

4:39 PM
What about this one: sunnah.com/urn/150090

@AlUmmat it is definitely a hadith - why do you say it's not? it has a sanad and the matn is as the hadith above it
@yasar11732 it is an appendage to the hadith above it describing something about one of the narrators

@Ansari I did not mean it is not a hadith, I meant there is no hadith in it right there

namely, that one of the narrators saw anas wearing a certain type of yellow clothing

i don't know about hadith, but quran.com/7/31 might be what you're thinking of. (inre the eat drink but do not waste)

@AlUmmat yes there is no explicit matn in the text of that page

4:45 PM

@Ansari perhaps the hadith is also in Sunan Ibn Majah, do you know a site that has a full online copy of it in both Arabic and english?

@goldPseudo That ayat sounds like exactly what I am looking for, but, I am reading a Turkish web page, mentions an Hadith giving these reference -> (Buhari, Libas 1; İbnu Mace, Libas 23.)
What is kibr in English. I think it is Arabic, means somethink like feeling mighty and important.
Being proud of ones self.

in a bad way
the word is arrogance

Yes. How do you translate it into English?
@AlUmmat Oh, thanks.

pride or arrogance

4:49 PM
@yasar11732 your welcome
:)

the best definition is that given by the Prophet (saws)
al kibr is batlu haqq and ghamtu an-nas
rejecting the truth and looking down on people
@AlUmmat i haven't come across a site that has both Arabic and English for Sunan ibn Majah
kalamullah has a PDF scan of the english translation of ibn majah

ok thanks :)

but if you find your hadith in there, you can look up the hadith number on hadith.al-islam.com or dorar.net or al-eman.com

also islam-web.com?
sorry islamweb.net
well, it doesn't have english though

5:07 PM
thank you :)

Q: When is Laylathul Qadr? What is it's importance?

Tabrez AhmedWhat is Laylathul Qadr? From most of the scholars I've heard that it could be on any of 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th and 29th of Ramadhan. But why do they orient it toward 27th? Please also quote some references on the importance of this night.

this is a good question

when is laylathul Qadr?

No one knows for sure I guess.

exactly. Then why?

Why to what?
why no one knows for sure?

why ask when no one knows it?

5:11 PM
Hmm, so you say not a real question?

i guess the question initially was 'what' ?

It keeps getting edited.

No, probably the questioner doesn't know the issue...so it is a real question

when is laylatul Qadr is a good questions still
there are many opinions with some hadiths to back them up

@yasar11732 I guess you were thinking hard for a question...lol

Q: Can a Muslim go for a vacation?

yasar11732Consider this ayat from Surat Ash-Sharĥ فَإِذَا فَرَغْتَ فَانصَبْ (Qur'an 94:7) According to Sahih International this is translated as, So when you have finished [your duties], then stand up [for worship]. And some other translations translate this ayat as Therefore, when thou art f...

The ayah came up when I was reading something :)
@Ershad Do you think it is a bad question?

Not at all...just funny :D

:D
I was being serious though. Why do you find it funny?

It sounded like troll question to be at first.. I remembered a question from few days ago.. when someone asked why is everything forbidden in islam and he gave a list..

5:20 PM
haha :) Is that question still around?

deleted i guess.. this guy asked it - islam.stackexchange.com/users/195/…

That guy seem to be asking only trolling questions.

yeah.. borderline troll.. we can't close the question.. but something tells us he is troll lol..

If I remember correctly, is not a troll , the word, referencing to a type of Jinn?

okay.. i am going to take a shot at your question..but I need some clarifications

5:26 PM
mine?

@yasar11732 yes.. @AlUmmat en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troll_(Internet)

@Ershad What do you need to know?

@yasar11732 What do you mean by vacation? do you mean travel in vacation? My school gives me a vacation...i cant deny the vacation.. and say I want to go to school...lol

@Ershad but doesn't the word have other meanings, away from the internet?

@AlUmmat I am not aware of that :(

5:29 PM
ok thanks :)

@Ershad Let me edit the question.

good.. that'll help

@Ershad I did my edit.

okay.. that clarifies it :)

5:47 PM
@AlUmmat Did you see the edit on the Laylatul Qadr question?

@Ershad I just saw it now

I just got a feeling that someone, someday will ask if trolling is haraam :)

can someone tell me if my answer fits the current question

lol.. yeah..too much haraam halaal questions

Q: Why is Laylathul Qadr oriented toward 27th night of Ramadhan?

Tabrez AhmedFrom most of the scholars I've heard that Laylathul Qadr could be on any of 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th and 29th of Ramadhan. But why do they orient it toward 27th?

5:52 PM
But, is it true that most scholars orient it towards 27th?
or is it people?

both,
arn't scholars people too :P

Good point :D

by people I mean common folk

both, but it sometimes might depend in their knowledge
ok I split up my answer as requested f me

Q: Importance of Laylathul Qadr?

Tabrez AhmedWhy is Laylathul Qadr an Important night for Muslims? Please quote from the Qur'an or Hadith.

@Ershad from what you have asked me, I feel that there is something that you want to say, is that true?

Yeah, basically what I meant is some people single out 27th for worshipping in Laylathul Qadr which is not proper... because the majority opinion is that it is last ten days (from 40 or so hadiths) and more specifically last seven days...

« first day (14 days earlier)      last day (4307 days later) »
