10:00 PM
And those who have responded to their lord and established prayer and whose affair is [determined by] consultation among themselves, and from what We have provided them, they spend. Qur'an 42:38

So maybe "Mutual Discussion done right" ?

"One community. No nonsense. Shura done right."
not quite right, but it does have zing.

an elevator pitch is different from a tagline right?

generally longer.
i'm thinking more tagline than pitch right now.
i suck at both.

i like the shura angle, but feel it's a little misdirected
we're not technically discussing a matter toward a decision right

10:07 PM
I think so

i'm also a bit leery about the implication that everything else is "Shura done wrong," which isn't really my intent.
but i do think the shura=crowdsourcing angle is a strong angle to follow.
and what else would you call asking the community, getting multiple answers, getting the community to vote on those answers, and then arriving at a decision?

i agree with that part of the analogy

me too

i also think it would pull us further from the "this site is a dictionary/encyclopedia" idea.

but also, shura means coming up with a decision that's binding on a community, it implies that those who are doing are in positions of some authority. all this is fine when the scope of their authority or decision is well-defined but here it's "Islam"
which kind of seems a little too close to the station of the mujtahideen

10:12 PM
fair enough.
i reckon we may want a disclaimer (a la judaism.SE) stating that any answers posted are not necessarily made by a licensed scholar, and should not be treated as binding.

yes we definitely need that somewhere
sorry i'm criticizing without offering an alternative

it's fine. i'm usually the one criticizing without offering an alternative. the role reversal is an interesting experience.

:)

so where are we going to put this notice?

judaism.SE has it on the top right of their page. so we'll probably want to put ours on the left.

10:16 PM
lol @goldPseudo
but yeah :P
j/k

@goldPseudo what is the link to this site, I want to see where the notice is

yes we should have it like theirs
so what is our elevator pitch?
whatever it is
please post it to this question on the meta

Q: What’s the “elevator pitch” for our site?

SystemDownSince no one has asked yet, permit me to be the first. What do you think should be the elevator pitch for islam.SE? More about what an elevator pitch is: Imagine you’ve just gotten on an elevator with a friendly stranger. You have precisely one floor to describe your community to them. Wh...

suggestion for tagline: No-nonsense Islam from experts.
(needs work)

yes
:)
please do not stop suggestion keep going, I believe in English you call it brainstorming ideas

10:34 PM
When we go public, I'll submit a link to r/Islam. That way we can get a whole bunch of new users.

@muntoo what is r/islam

@AlUmmat It's a subreddit. reddit.com/r/islam

@muntoo how many users are on r/islam

@AlUmmat There are 6000 subscribers. But how many we get depends on how many upvotes my submission will get.

hmm

10:38 PM
Oh, wait. Looks like someone jumped the gun: reddit.com/r/islam/comments/vamfz/…

thats good

@muntoo How about stumbleupon?

whats that?

@Ershad Never used it before...

stumbleupon.com . It is a site which categorizes different links and people explore their interests based on category, so they "stumbleupon" our website.
There is a category called sunni islam as well
or shia islam

10:45 PM
Asalamuwa alaikum @hkBattousai

Aleykum selam @AlUmmat

@hkBattousai how are you

i'm fine, you too inshaallah

Alhamdulillah

i came to peek what people talking here :)

10:47 PM
we actually have a nicely active chatroom so far.

can anybody give me a short description of what this website is about? I am adding it on stumbleupon

a lot better than some of the SE sites, where you can go days without anyone talking.
is there any point to posting it on SU now, since it's still in private beta?

@Ershad well we need a elevator pitch , once we have it than you can post it on SU and I suggest you wait undtil public beta

will the url change if it goes public?
okay :)

@Ershad have you suggested a elevator pitch yet?

10:52 PM
@AlUmmat Nope, still thinkng of one.

@IsaacMoses salaam, welcome to the main chat room, how are you today?
@Ershad ok
@hkBattousai do you have a suggestion for the elevator pitch?

folks don't publicize the website yet - nobody except us can see it!
if you publicize prematurely, people will come here, see they can't get in, then forget about it

From Meta.English.SE, it seems we should set the maximum number of words to 10. Less is more.
Here's a terrible suggestion (which needs improvement/detail/etc, as you can see):
Islam.SE -- A way of life

11:08 PM
Islam.SE learn Islam
or Islam.SE ask about Islam

Islam Q&A for beginners and experts?
Or is that basically what StackExchange is?

Islam Q&A -- Islam for all of humanity
@muntoo yes that is what stackexchange is
that I know

Islam for all humanity sounds "preachy"
:S

yeah

"From humble beginnings."

11:13 PM
that is a good one I like it :)

11:24 PM
@Ansari I submitted some tag edits can you maybe look at them and if their good approve them?

oh sure inshaAllah @AlUmmat

@Ansari thank you

how are tag edits peer reviewed?
Never mind.. found it :)

:)
Alhamdulillah

Your tag edits are good :)

11:31 PM
@Ershad So... care to tell us how? :)

Alhjamdulillah I am reading yours on Usool-ul-Fiqh it is good I have not finished but I am learning a lot :)

@muntoo Someone does tag edit and the person who has the privileges to review it can do so by click on the review option near the badges number.
*clicking
and approve it or reject it
@AlUmmat Alhamdulilah

@muntoo we would be happy if you joined us in editing tag wikis :)
@Ershad your excerpt for this islam.stackexchange.com/edit-tag-wiki/168 has been rejected

Do you propose a better excerpt?
Is there a problem with explanation as well?
@AlUmmat

11:47 PM
@Ershad no I approved the explanation but the excerpt was rejected before I got to it

Ah..okay :) I will put that again.

you just have to put the excerpt, and try to just summarize the explanation, that is my suggestion

okay.. I will do that.

:)
