For F2P I would guess that alway-online helps to prevent cheat that give you the stuff you would have to pay for

If you AFK for 40 seconds, enemies just "happen to" wander into your face.

@badp I think part of it is their seasonal races.

They want people to be invested in their game, and if it allowed offline, people would just go, "Who cares?" and hack the season prize items into their character.

Not that I'm defending them; offline should always be a choice.

@fbueckert Make it so offline mode chars can't play online, but they can play. Allow players to fork their online mode chars to offline mode.

@badp I would enjoy that immensely, actually.

@badp Dungeon Defenders has two modes sorta like that. They have an "official server" mode where your scores are counted against other people and stuff, and then the "offline mode" where you can use mods/hacks/etc. legally and not have it affect your other characters. You can copy your official server characters to offline, but not vice versa.

@FAE Yeah, the problem with DD is that it defaults you to offline mode

...and in DD character levels 1-65 are "early game" apparently

I think I got bored out of my mind at level 6 or so.

@AshleyNunn Not a huge deal. Previous games, it was sort of a requirement to get everything to stay on top of the difficulty curve.

This one has grinding galore, though, and the ability to buy permanent stat up items.

Nothing official. There was a read-only XAMPP bridge which worked fairly well

Using screen scraping you can probably set up a read-only server well enough. Alternatively, use phantom.js to emulate something like that. Kind of pointless though.
