But if it works, awesome. I just reserve the right to never reference it :P

@MarkTrapp also, did you know that we only have 8 questions and they're all over a year old?

user2334
Those should probably be revisited

Wow, I missed quite the shitstorm earlier

@MarkTrapp maybe the first task is figuring out which questions should be

user2334
@murgatroid99 I agree. There's this question from beta, but I think a new "What should be in our meta FAQ?" would be better

4:02 PM
@MarkTrapp right, and that's about the actual site FAQ, not meta FAQ questions
@MarkTrapp asking now

@RonanForman New episode day today?

Q: What questions should be in our meta FAQ?

murgatroid99The tag faq is useful on many sites on this network for creating a list of questions that many users need to know but could never fit in the site FAQ. Arqade is not using that tag to its fullest potential. The tag currently has exactly 8 questions, and all are over a year old. This is not good be...

@James Done.

@murgatroid99 I made a list of the major "meta policy" at one point, and considered posting it. I got derailed by a number of other issues, though.
I can provide it as a reference. Part of the problem is keeping it organized as our opinions and the finer points of policy change.

Q: Please don't delete controversial questions immediately

Mad ScientistClosed questions, except for duplicates, are regularly deleted to clean up the site. I've done that often enough myself on the sites where I'm a moderator. But except for some extreme cases, I always try to leave the questions visible for long enough to give the community the opportunity to overt...

@RonanForman Freezing Free? :)

@James I think so.
Yeah, I checked.

Kewl

@AshleyNunn I am.

@RonanForman Oi I see you digging out the ceiling and I cringe cause I play TFCraft so much :D
LOL
I apologize to any kids watching.. Unless they can't read.

So, my brother's credit card info got stolen, and it will take about a week to get a replacement card. Can someone buy the Indie Royale bundle for me, and then I can pay you back in a week or so?

OMG OMG OMG! Borderlands 2 FINALLY on Steam!!! And 10% off if you already own Borderlands 1 :D

@James Christ. As if they didn't take enough of my money over the past couple of weeks
Valve really knows how to suck my wallet dry.
When's the official release date again?

user15026
@origamirobot good you should be happy

NVM. I see it on the game's page now. 9/18

awesome awesome awesome!
BL1 is 75% off for the Game of the Year edition

4:41 PM
@RESPAWN I'll be happily lost in Legends of Pegasus at that point.

@fbueckert Lies!!

@fbueckert I'm just hoping that I can get through some of my gaming back log before then so I can feel better about starting up a new game.

@James You're saying that Borderlands 2 will get it's hooks in me? Or just that you know me better than myself? :P

@fbueckert BL2 is BL2 man, it can not be resisted :)

@fbueckert I'm super excited about this game.

4:45 PM
I know I'm late to this party, but this question should not have been re-opened. Forget on/off topic. It is simply Not Constructive.

Q: Slender Game - Safe Download

MystagogueI want to try the free "Slender" horror game, but the shares to reach it do not promise the executable is clean. So I'd like to know either (1) a recommended download share or (2) a free tool that will scan an individual executable / installer / zip for malware.

@James See. Now I almost don't want to buy the game just to prove you wrong. :-P

@Fluttershy We should play multiplayer sometime.

Q: Steam ports blocked

TMPMy schools internet network seems to block a few ports making me get kicked off of online steam games pretty quickly. I have a list of those ports, but it states: Note: Many university networks and proxies block required ports for Steam operation - please consult your network administrator...

@OrigamiRobot I agree with you, but since it's been closed, deleted, undeleted, and re-opened, we should probably hold off until we can come to a consensus on it.

4:48 PM
@OrigamiRobot Why?

@MadScientist "this question will likely solicit debate, arguments, polling, or extended discussion. "

@MadScientist So if my nephew makes up a poem about video games and I post it on YouTube, is it constructive for me to ask about it here?

@fbueckert See my comment on the question in.... question.

@Fluttershy Saw it. Flagged it for a mod to lock until we decide what to do about it.

@fbueckert If anything, it should be closed prior to locking.

4:51 PM
@James I bought two copies of BL1 when it first came out. I loved the game, but lost interest as more and more DLC came out. What's better about BL2?
@Fluttershy I agree with the point of view that it should be closed; but from the user's point of view, we're just arbitrarily closing, opening, deleting willy nilly.

One could argue about notability, but that is something we haven't required so far. If the topic is of interest only to a tiny group of people, it might be too localized. I didn't check how popular that youtube video is

@MadScientist 69 views.

So, we should hash out what to do with it before we continue with the closing and re-opening.

user15026
It needs a lock and a meta post or something.

@MadScientist Searchability is another problem. Who is going to find that video on YouTube, question its references, and end up on that question for an answer?

user15026
4:54 PM
And if it has one, it needs to be left until a coherent decision is made.

4 mins ago, by fbueckert
@Fluttershy Saw it. Flagged it for a mod to lock until we decide what to do about it.

But I don't see non-constructiveness. It's an answerable question, and the expertise you need to answer is is being a gamer

1 min ago, by fbueckert
So, we should hash out what to do with it before we continue with the closing and re-opening.

@fbueckert All new classes, seems there are NPCs that you can gear up to fight along with you.

:P

4:55 PM
@MadScientist Who's to say "Stay a while and listen" is from Diablo? I heard it in Magicka. Maybe the YouTuber is talking about Magicka. Without the actual creator of the video giving the answer, it is all speculative.

@MadScientist The creator could be referencing games other than the original; we just don't know, one way or the other.
@James Ok. Still doesn't interest me that much.

user15026
@fluttershy this. We have no way of concretely knowing for sure. Gaming refs get recycled so often that it can be hard to find a concrete origin unless the maker explains it.

@Fluttershy That can always be the case with references, but you can find out who was first in many cases

@fbueckert k, how about it was just a great story the first time, good game play and great Co-Op

@Fluttershy And in this case it's easy, it's not Magicka as that was much later than Diablo

4:58 PM
@James Sooooo I should buy BL2 because it's more of the same as BL1?

@MadScientist But how do we know the person who made the video has even played Diablo? We don't. Assumption isn't what we do here. We deal with expertise. We have no way of saying with 100% certainty what the youtuber was talking about.

@Fluttershy The correct answer is not the author's intent, which we can't know as you say, but the origin of the reference

@MadScientist The origin of the reference based on that YouTube video. The YouTuber made that video for the sole purpose of people guessing.

@MadScientist How do you get that interpretation? That sounds like, "Doesn't matter what the author intended, here's what's right."

@MadScientist I can and will make up poems and/or songs to ask questions about. How is that constructive?

5:01 PM
@fbueckert I will be very happy if it is just that, but yes :)

@James Nope. If BL1 had interested me enough, I would've finished it's DLC. Since I didn't, it'll take more than that to convince me. :)

@fbueckert If the author attributes a reference to someone that just cites earlier games, he made a mistake. A complete answer might include more than one game (originally Diablo, later repeated in Magicka, ...)

@fbueckert well good luck with that. I will be too busy enjoying what should be an awesome game to try and make you realize that what you are saying is a bit ass backwards :D

In fact, @spugsley would be overjoyed to hear that she can ask people about her Diablo songs and get rep for it.

@James :P Like I said, I'll be happily buried in Legends of Pegasus at that point.

user15026
5:04 PM
Oh man @origamirobot now I want to hear these songs.

@fbueckert And how was that games first version?

And a gun RNG can't hold a candle to mashing as many guns as possible into a hull.
@James They have a FIRST version!?

@AshleyNunn hugs
I'll explain later.
tortoise swoosh

@fbueckert And there shold be some DLC in order for you to want to play it.. the DLC had to have been awesome for that game

@MadScientist What if the references we're interpreting aren't even the references he was intending?

FAE
5:06 PM
@OrigamiRobot I don't think any of those songs would be safe for the site. :P

@FAE Yea we would have to edit the swears out.

user15026
@wipqozn why the random hug?

user15026
I am so confused.

@James I'm not following your train of thought. You're basing it off of...it's previous version? With DLC?

@fbueckert Hehe, Sarcasm man, your measuring stick seems skewed to me :D

5:07 PM
@fbueckert Maybe some references are ambiguous, then you can either list multiple games or try to determine the origin of the reference.

@MadScientist And what part of listing multiple games isn't speculation?
@James I base my opinion of Borderlands off of what I've played.
And from what I've played, I like it, but it's scratched the Diablo gun itch.

@fbueckert And the first game sucked so much that you bought DLC but since you didnt finish the DLC the other core game is going to suck,, Yeah I dont get it :)

is there a meta question\discussion involving our 11 hidden whatever question that raised all the hubbub?

Whereas a new 4X game that looks as complicated as LoP is going to send me into ecstasy.
@James I'm trying to get you to convince me to get it. :P If it's just more of the same, sorry, no. Been there, done that. If it has new features, such as craftable guns or something like that, I'd be all over that.

On a completely unrelated note

5:10 PM
I love fiasco!

FAE
@James I'm going to be playing this this week.

I have only played once, but it was awesome.

@OrigamiRobot I hate it actually its not a game, its people telling a .. crappy story :D

FAE
My friends and I are gonna do setup tonight.

@FAE Let me know how it goes :)

5:11 PM
@fbueckert Depending on how strict you are, either only the first occurence of the reference or all of them are valid answers. No speculation necessary

FAE
@James I'm very excited.

@James You roll dice at the end. That's enough, right?

@MadScientist My definition of speculation must be broken, then, as I see it as ALL of the answers are speculating on what the author meant.

@OrigamiRobot Not for my gaming group.. We love gloom though :)

Q: Backtracking in Legend of Grimrock

sepIs every secret you missed on previous floor always obtainable later in the game or is there any blocking factor or any floor not reachable?

@fbueckert No crafting just a better generation system it seems (There are components that can be more random but you do not seem to get to rip em apart and put them together) So yeah just new classes, new NPCs and some neat looking co-op game mechanics, but if you are looking for crafting that is not there.

@James I forgot I made that joke, I'm not amused too. I think I was going crazy.

5:18 PM
@James So, the only thing different is neat looking co-op mechanics? Sorry, dude, but that's not enough to make me shell out for it.

@fbueckert Yeah that last statement was me giving up on you man :)

Squee mode

Ok, so my request for locking our fun game identification question got declined. So, hey, I guess that means we should close it.
@James No worries, dude. :) I'll probably get it at some point, but with a shiny new 4X, with massive ship customization, a gun Diablo is far down the list.

@RonanForman What's this Dave that it's going to be exclusive to?

@fbueckert ... 4x massive ship customization???

@RESPAWN A channel up until earlier this year only showed repeats.

Mainly topgear and red dwarf. And a couple of panel shows.

yesterday, by fbueckert
It is because of images like this that I am looking forward to Legends of Pegasus.

@RonanForman Ah. Gotcha. So a British TV channel. lol

@RESPAWN Aye.

5:25 PM
I never really watched Red Dwarf, but now I'm wondering if it's on Netflix

@RESPAWN Netflix doesn't have anything on it.

:(

@fbueckert I still play Moo2, i have yet to find an 4e game that takes my interest like that did

That's a generalisation, I'd still check.

How do you do spoiler tags? I can't find how to do it anywhere on this site. (Sorry if I missed it somewhere)

5:26 PM
Yeah. Checking now just to be sure... Assuming I can remember my password

@Ender Sadly, my introduction to 4X games was Space Empires 3. Which has heavily influenced what I look for in a 4X.

user15026
@respawn I know it is on Canadian Netflix. Or it was recently.

@Halfwarr Find a post that uses it, and click edit. :P

@fbueckert thanks so its >!

Nope. Not on American Netflix. At least not for streaming. But then I don't pay for the DVD subscription

user15026
5:29 PM
@halfwarr yes :)

any of you play Legend of Grirmrock?
I'm really enjoying it

I gotta give the mods some credit, managing the chaos that is ArQAde is practically a part-time job.
I wanted to be a mod at one point, I'm not sure I still do.

@James I suspect you got lost in the gorgeous screenshots of LoP. :P

@fbueckert Nah it was confusing and told me nothing of the game
I am finishing up the Fiasco episode of Table Top :D

@James Heh. Touché.
Would you rather I linked to their videos?

5:42 PM
@agent86 Can you link to that reference in a comment on my meta question? It might help to have it handy.

@murgatroid99 yeah, I don't know the best way to post it. right now it's in a private post on my blog (since my blog has markdown support).

@agent86 yeah, I saw. It looks like a good start

@fbueckert How about just a description of the game? :D

5:52 PM
@James 4X games need a description? From what I've seen of the screenshots, planets have a grid for facilities, and they're talking about being able to build shipyards around planets.
And it's really, REALLY pretty.

@fbueckert What is a 4X game?

@James And this is where I facepalm. Silly me, expecting you to understand a general genre term. :P

@James Like Civilization.
Expand, explore, something, something

4X games are a genre of strategy video game in which players control an empire and "explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate". The term was first coined by Alan Emrich in his September 1993 preview of Master of Orion for Computer Gaming World. Since then, others have adopted the term to describe games of similar scope and design. 4X games are noted for their deep, complex gameplay. Emphasis is placed upon economic and technological development, as well as a range of non-military routes to supremacy. Games can take a long time to complete since the amount of micromanagement needed to ...

I don't remember the other Xs.
I thought one was exterminate but that seemed more like insects than other civilizations.

5:55 PM
Ah, Space TBS game?

@James Simple summation, yes.

@fbueckert Simple is good :D

@fbueckert Are you talking about GalCiv?

@StrixVaria New 4X coming out in a couple of weeks. Legends of Pegasus.

@fbueckert I always have way more fun watching those games than playing them.
Remind me when it comes out so I can check out some videos.
I had a friend who played a lot of GalCiv in college.
It was hilarious to watch him get swarmed and murdered.

5:59 PM
@StrixVaria Pfft. I'll be entirely lost in the game. No time for videos, must cram more engines into the hull!

@StrixVaria How nice.

@Koviko He liked playing on difficulties too high for his skill level.

@StrixVaria That's one way to get better.

user2334
@Ender Okay, so I meant make your question here neutral in tone so people can voice their positions and reasons for why the question should or shouldn't be closed. Right now, the question is the same as the dupe suggestion I linked: it's fine that your answer to the question of "Should the question be closed?" is based on a reading of the practical problems clause: that should be your answer so people can evaluate it separately from the question itself

6:03 PM
@MarkTrapp ok
still kinda learning how to do this proper, appreciate all patience involved. :d

user2334
No problem: generally, unless you want to make an announcement or a feature request, you always want to separate the question from your thoughts on the question. We've all made the same error, but in this case, your position detracts from the project, which is to talk about this question, not the merits of closing against the problems you actually face clause

user2334
And we just so happen to have a question already for the latter :P

Busy Busy Bumble-Bees!

Oh WTF I just looked up the release date for Half-Life 2. It's almost 8 years old.
Seriously Valve.

user2334
Isn't Ep 2 from like 2007 though?

6:07 PM
@MarkTrapp Yes, but that's still 5 years.
:(

user2334
At least they're not Blizzarding it up with 12 year gaps :P

@MarkTrapp Yet.

I unaccepted the answer for this question: gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/37525/… mostly based on this: meta.gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/5140/… . Would it be wrong to cast summon question by editing it for a bump?

user2334
I like to think that when Gaben dies, his body will be consumed by a beacon of light, and when that light fades, the gold master of Half-Life 3 will coalesce from nothingness.

user2334
@Rapida Why are you trying to bump it? To get attention to attract a correct answer?

user2334
6:10 PM
(if so, use a bounty)

user2334
If you're planning on clarifying the question by editing thereby causing a bump, that's okay too. But bumping without doing either is ಠ_ಠ

@MarkTrapp Yeah, I that's what I figured just not too enthused with giving away my precious reputation on a game that I've not played for ages.

@Rapida Then you don't want an answer that badly.

user2334

@MarkTrapp Is this any better? I know I didnt change much but I felt I didn't need to in order to make the question less of a question +answer

user2334
6:16 PM
Well, I mean your entire position should be moved into an answer, not just the last line. Make the question something like, "We have this question, [link], there's some disagreement about whether it should stay open ([optional link to said discussion]). Should this stay open or be closed?"

user2334
Otherwise the question is about your reasoning, not whether the question should be closed. Your reasoning being already addressed in a different question

user2334
I think I forgot to say that people can agree that the question should be closed, but not for the reasons you give. As it is now, it's hard to discuss anything other than your specific reasons why the question should be closed. If you're just looking to get the question closed, allowing for other positions that may be stronger would be effective

user2334
@Ender Perfect, thanks! Sorry to be such a bugbear about it.

No prob at all. Thanks for the guiding hand

@Koviko Yeah I don't particularly care about the answer since I've stopped playing Skyrim. It was more the principal of the matter about one of my questions had an answer that could be wrong. @MarkTrapp You are sort of awesome..

6:25 PM
Whoa, I lose reputation for downvoting?

user2334
@Ender de nada: I adjusted the title as well to follow suit with the change

user2334
@Rapida de rien: something something pants on one leg at a time something something gold records.

@MarkTrapp Please respond in the form of a question.

@Ender ...You should put your opinions into pixel's meta; I feel there's a large difference between her viewpoint when trying to learn, and yours.

@Koviko Costs 1 rep to downvote an answer. It's free to downvote questions.

user2334
6:27 PM
@Koviko Never?

Not to try to cause offense to anyone, especially not pixel, but I find nitpicking an opposing argument when you're trying to learn how the site works is usually counter intuitive.

lol

@fbueckert I may do just that, ill re read her\his meta and see how i can help

@fbueckert It's also a personality flaw, meaning there's not much you can do it about it.
It's just who you are.

@Koviko Yes, you can. As you mature, you'll find that some battles are not worth fighting.

user2334
6:29 PM
@fbueckert I think there's merit to opening a meta question about this specific question, as it hasn't been done yet. Pixel's question is more about the inscrutability of the rules

@fbueckert Nothing you can do it about it immediately. Maturing is a slow process that requires you to want to change.
Otherwise, you are just acting for the sake of others.

user2334
And an oak cask in a cool dark cellar. Wait, we're not talking about bourbon are we?

@Koviko Peer pressure is a wonderful (and sometimes very bad) thing; the need to fit in is an overriding instinct in humans.

@fbueckert WAKE UP SHEEPLE!

Sidenote: That wasn't really worth starring; I'm just talking about my personal experiences.

6:32 PM
@fbueckert I am of the camp that believes that we are the product of our experiences and they show in our personalities. I believe that some people feel the best way to fit in is to find a group of outcasts.
And the best way to find that group is to voice opposing opinions.

@Koviko So, basically, make a nuisance of yourself until you find like-minded individuals?
I'm not sure if I agree with that.

@fbueckert That's the point!
As long as you are part of the majority, you are not hip.
Or.. You are hip, which isn't hip...
I forget exactly how it works.
Just think "goth clique."

@Koviko Honestly, I think that's not really the best way to go about it; if your current group does not share your viewpoints, don't become a speed bump they want to flatten; find a group that DOES share your views.

@fbueckert See, this mentality is just The Man trying to hold you down.
The Man being Jeff & crew.

user2334
You know who could solve this problem them? Ron Paul. Neil deGrasse Tyson.

6:39 PM
I don't think he'd bore himself with these "problems"

@Koviko I think you're trying to channel pixel right now. :P

@fbueckert You can't stop the truth, man!

@Koviko There's stoner truth, and then there's everybody else truth. :P

@fbueckert And only the former is the real truth!
Can I get an Amen?

But, regardless, the point I'm making is that the learning process requires a short period where you suspend your disbelief. It's hard to learn when you spend the entire time arguing or disagreeing with the teacher.
And the best attitude I've found for learning anything at all, if a mistake is made somewhere, assuming you made it tends to work much better for getting to the root cause of it.
Even if you didn't make the mistake, people are much more receptive when you don't attempt to blame them for something.

6:48 PM
No one is saying that you are wrong.
But no one is saying that you are right, either.
Forever in purgatory, you are.
May the Force be with you.

@MarkTrapp A little late, but you think we should discuss the learning attitude in meta?

user2334

@fbueckert That's wayyyy too meta.
I'm So Meta Even This Acronym

user2334
@fbueckert I take my philosophy of education cues from Platocrates. Most people don't want to learn: they just want to do whatever. So trying to get them to come around is a waste of time. Focus all efforts on those that can be reached.

user2334
6:53 PM
You can tell the latter from the former because they generally are receptive to feedback and ask questions before jumping to conclusions

user2334
@tiddy Oh, is this a deGrasse Tyson meme-off? I wasn't prepared

Thought it fit

@MarkTrapp That's a good philosophy. Problem is, I have a very teaching mindset. I like to teach everybody.

@fbueckert Need to fit in or need for acceptance? Cause those are not the same thing (And I am not sure the first one exists :))

This seems like an advertisement for d3auction house to me: gaming.stackexchange.com/a/78717/3015
Maybe I'm being overly suspicious though

@Rapida I followed the link and there's nothing about the question there. Spammy spam spam

@James Need to fit in is usually derived from need for acceptance. Rare is the teen group than can or will accept someone who doesn't fit in.
As you mature, your self confidence allows you to interact with others outside your viewpoints, and accept them without agreeing with them.

@fbueckert Fitting in might get you acceptance.. I am just not sure if it is a direct need or just a course of action to obtain acceptance.

@James Usually the latter; you can fit in, but not be accepted.

@fbueckert Meh, I know many 'mature' people who are still just as pig headed as always :D

@MarkTrapp what is Platocrates?
or who

@MarkTrapp Yup. Spam user. Destroy.

@tiddy Maybe the belief that Plato just created stories about Socrates and that Socrates never really existed?

I mean I think I know what you meant but I've never heard the term
