Q: How do I use scoreboard commands in minecraft

I am trying to make it so that when a player steps on a pressure plate it activates a series of command blocks. /scoreboard teams join /tp @p I am able to make the second command work but the join team command isn't working. Also I need to know how to leave a team that I am a part of.
