I called my ISP tech support the other day. I had to wait for her to go through 4 steps to open Internet options from Internet Explorer (there is no IE on Windows 10), then proceeded to open it by opening the start menu and searching for it, which only took about five keystrokes

In Mr.Robot, they use a custom Linux distro they cooked up and loaded on a Raspberry Pi, combined with an infiltration attempt to get into a high security data center by pretending to be an interested client. They find a lan jack in a janitorial area, wire it in. The Pi checks the network for climate control hardware, in an attempt to stop the cooling to parts of the data center.

Instead of a completely made up 'blinking lights' and 'flashing numbers' sequence, it's a plausible hack. Not common or likely, but plausible.

Another clever attack shown in the series is a 'seeding' attack. Malware infested USB drives are littered across a police parking lot. Someone picks one up, and puts it in a police PC. It shows him a prompt, 'you just won a....' and asks him innane personal taste questions while in the background a bot kicks off to probe the network for what the protagonist is looking for. Unfortunately, this attack gets stopped by anti-virus when it tries to tunnel outside the police network.
