@Memor-X ahhh "thought crimes" yes this guy knows where we're headed
@Avery adoption?

Adoption is a terribly shitty system

Also, the AI professor like to use his children in his probability and uncertainty questions

for anyone else wanting to know what @KevinvanderVelden is listening too

It is however less shitty then tossing the kid out on the streets

In 12/13 it's changing diapers. 13/14 is navigating the School of Computing. 14/15 is getting tuition.
They grow up so fast!

2:03 PM

@GnomeSlice As someone who is Chinese, I don't think you understand "the way China did that only have one child thing".

@KevinvanderVelden depends on country I guess

@Memor-X Now that's a good overreaction there.

@PrivatePansy Is this for serial port auto-detect?

2:05 PM
@MBraedley I don't know, I never tried to plug computer accessories into babies before

Just the use of "COM1" and "COM2"

@Avery I don't know of any country where it's a good system =p (note: this just means that not having the baby is better than having the baby and putting it up for adoption. A system for adoption is needed)

@MBraedley They are School of Computing building 1 and 2, aka COM1 and COM2

(and of course make it as not shitty as possible, that doesn't mean it's not still shitty)

@KevinvanderVelden yes, what I agree that it's better to not have it in first place, but people fuck up, and there's a huge backlog of babies needing adoption around the world.

2:08 PM
Not just people fucking up, also in case of death of the parents and such

A common joke he makes is that he gave birth to a tiny inference engine, and now needs to fill up its knowledge base so that it can make decisions properly

@PrivatePansy It's not an inaccurate way of stating it
Well, except the bit where "he gave birth"

Oh this is interesting... 11/12 has a question on perceptrons
That's not taught in the last three years
Uh, four
Seems that the module used to be more strongly focused on machine learning and classification

@Memor-X Typically overblown article, here's the actual newsletter. Telegraph likes to make it seem like the world is sliding into a PC hell-hole, and will wade through mountains of stuff to find tiny examples that they can blow out of proportion like that

@fredley the Telegraph is ran by rapid Macintosh fans?

2:13 PM
@Yuuki you're right I don't

@badp Yes

Wasnt it like you could have another one if it was a girl?

@fredley I guess a PC would rather then be classified as a hell-drawer

No, you couldn't legally. So what happened was that people would not declare their children if they were girls.
So they'd either end up abandoned at the hospital or just un-personed.

That's fucked
And why I said it probably wouldn't work in current society

2:15 PM
Even worse, some families would actually kill female children so they could try to have a son.

@fredley Good job, I couldn't find that newsletter anywhere.

@Yuuki Or aborted? That was my impression.

One Child was f--ked up.

@GnomeSlice current as in 2 years ago

As in today

2:15 PM
@Ronan I wonder why the Telegraph didn't link it directly...

@fredley Because surprise surprise. No where gave a source.

@fredley It's illegal IIRC to determine the gender of a child before birth

Didn't think it worked that well over there either, I just like the idea

@GnomeSlice one child was current, it only "ended" 2 years ago

@Ronan Found the website of the dept, searched for 'eye contact', was quite far down, but surprisingly actually indexed

2:16 PM
I thought it was still going

@fredley I did give up after googling.

@PrivatePansy Just like it's illegal to abandon/hide them?
@Ronan fake news detector grade: D-:

@PrivatePansy uh? Can't you tell on an ultrasound?

It's a bit of a stretch to go from "it's rude to refuse to make eye contact with people" to "not making eye contact makes you a racist"

@GnomeSlice Only if you look

2:17 PM
@fredley It is not illegal to not register them per se, IIRC, but the consequences are not good

Doesn't like everyone do that

Not if the trained professional operating the ultrasound knows it's illegal and, like, doesn't
It's often quite hard to find

@Ronan to "OXFORD UNIVERSITY SAYS YOU ARE GUILTY OF RACISM"

@fredley The all caps is important.

(feti are kinda small)

2:18 PM
@GnomeSlice It's not illegal in most countries

(feti is a fun plural)

@fredley It's only "necessary" in countries with a strong cultural gender preference

@PrivatePansy My ultrasound brings all the boys to the yard

@fredley ohh I see

@fredley And they're like: I never had a sister.

2:19 PM
@Ronan I could teach you, but I'd have to report you to a party official

Also don't dig up our garden.

They're all like "I know you're old, but just because you can't hear it doesn't mean we can't and it is REALLY ANNOYING"

tl;dr my world views are weird

@GnomeSlice And you could try and work it out on the sly, but how do you know someone working at the clinic isn't a party mole who will report you?

2:21 PM
@KevinvanderVelden I can't hear ultrasound, I can hear bird scarers though

@fredley Well, I mean moles aren't really well known for their medical prowess. Digging for earthworms, on the other hand...

(inb4 yr a bird scarer)

@fredley actual ultrasound is way beyond the range of human hearing =p

Why is that even illegal

@fredley I have been known to chase birds.
3
@GnomeSlice To avoid you finding out your child is female and having an abortion.

2:24 PM
@KevinvanderVelden Isn't that the definition?

Oh we're talking about China still
Makes more sense

@DanmakuGrazer well there's medical ultrasound which is a specific frequency and just regular ultrasound which is everything above human hearing

Ultrasound jelly: pleasantly warm, unpleasantly sticky

(as in, human limit ~20Khz, medical ultrasound: 1 to 18Mhz)

2:27 PM
Guess where I've had it slathered...

@fredley CC @Arperum

@fredley circulatory exam of left or right leg?

@MadMAxJr guess again

@MadMAxJr I'm CCing arperum, I only do that for one fredley related injury

@fredley Wait, is this a sex thing?

2:28 PM
@PrivatePansy Actually yes! Sort of

Hmm.

He had testicular torsion... 2 years ago?

@KevinvanderVelden sets fire to everything

They surgically removed @fredley's ability to be happy.

@KevinvanderVelden GAH! STOP REMINDING PEOPLE OF THAT.

2:32 PM

@Yuuki note to self: also CC @Yuuki

@Yuuki Don't get your knickers in a twist.

It's all fun and games until @badp pls

And in all that room ownership shenanigans noone removed/added @Wipqozn's room owner status?

Q: Having trouble testing for mobs with command blocks

Lucas PiccininniI'm trying to create a pokeball in Minecraft but I was wondering if there is any way for the command block to test for all mobs in a certain radius and give a different output depending on the mob without having to test for each mob individually with individual command blocks

2:51 PM
@Feeds seems like a real party
Can you remove yourself from the list of room owners?

Ronan has removed Ronan from the list of this room's owners.

Ah wonderful
This would make for some great chaos

> The Reddit admins are looking to replace CSS theming with a more consistent dedicated theming API. The benefit is that it would lead to a more consistent experience for users (stuff like r/ooer would not be possible) across desktop and mobile, but the drawback is that it would remove a lot of features that current CSS theming is capable of (stuff like r/ooer would not be possible).

I dunno what /r/ooer is but I know I've already disabled the custom subreddit style for it
there was that other subreddit that simply said you're a beautiful person.

@Yuuki what the crap is that ooer monster?
I had never heard of it before

I'd imagine a lot of things won't be possible without the full power of CSS

/r/ooer is either an experiment in the worst possible UI you can make with Reddit's CSS or some IT-based Lovecraftian invasion of the Material Plane.

r/chemicalreactiongif has a slowly moving background that's powered by CSS animation. It's pretty neat

3:11 PM
I would say I'd miss it but I have themes disabled

r/mylittlepony and r/anime have emote faces and spoiler markup

with an overall Reddit Dark theme

/r/movies has a scrolling header bar for recent movie discussion and AMA posts.

Why would these things not be possible with a dedicated theming API?

@BlueBarren Animated background is very niche, and it's unlikely they'd support it
Emotes are basically a hack.
r/stevenuniverse displays random quotes in the sidebar using CSS
That is very interesting given CSS has no random function

3:13 PM
Well it doesn't affect me so that totally means it isn't a real problem, right?

(They use the CSRF token attached to the logout button as a randomizer)
Oh, and subreddits that hide voting buttons to non-subscribers, or hide the downvote buttons would also lose that
It's technically speaking against reddit rules for subreddits to do that, but it's not enforced
@BlueBarren There's actually a lot of things that look like features which are actually implemented in CSS

How we'll miss thee CSS
In other news people are complaining that Hots 2.0 comes out tomorrow and not today in the EU
So as per usual entitlement and impatience are at an all time high

Still quite possibly one of my favourite hacks.

It is rather impressively devious

The best part is using the token as a random value
To make up for the fact that CSS doesn't have a random()

3:31 PM
@PrivatePansy oh, that's interesting

From r/mylittlepony, a pretty neat easter egg by the mods

@PrivatePansy I'd like having the hack officially supported tbh

@badp Given the state of reddit engineering, I don't see them supporting emotes officially.

@badp :thonkang::thronkang::thinkong::thinkraging:... :gachiGASM::gachiGASM::gachiGASM::gachiGASM:

user15026
I'm glad emotes are not a thing here sometimes

3:38 PM
so I recorded a 30 sec gif and apparently the convertor is not having the best time (or using the most optimal amount of ram)...

@Avery Oh hey, your images load now while I'm at work.

oh cool

r/anime's dropdown menu looks like a reddit feature, but the HTML for the menu actually resides in the sidebar
The entire menu is transplanted from there. It's kind of ridiculous how the menu manages to fit perfectly even though it shouldn't

reddit csses are usually all huge hacks
(reddit could use a rewrite)
(are they still building on the 10+ year old codebase?)

3:48 PM
@Ronan Are you saying the Telegraph made that stretch or the newsletter?

@RedRiderX The Telegraph. The newsletter specifically said they can be microaggressions.

What do you call it when Batman skips Church
...
Christian Bale

@Avery Aren't they getting rid of all the CSS?

seems so

3:54 PM
Goddamnit, my network is so messed up

@GnomeSlice What do you call a dragon librarian?
A bookwyrm.

@Ronan The newsletter also specifically called it "subtle racism"

@RedRiderX Yup.

3:59 PM
@Ronan Well I'm just saying that I don't think they telegraph is actually exaggerating too much, but they are missing the point of that part of the newsletter which is just "don't be a jerk and exclude people with that sort of stuff"

@RedRiderX The Telegraph is also claiming the newsletter is saying not making eye contact at all is racist, whereas the newsletter is just saying that not making eye contact is a thing that is mean and can be done to exclude people, and when done to a specific race is racist.

@BlueBarren That hurt to examine.

today on microsoft pls:
(to make stuff even worse, that's my personal mail)

@MadMAxJr the pain is real

4:08 PM
they're organizing so much stuff and assigning so much stuff that I can't even ugh

Ah yes, "can't even" syndrome

@BlueBarren I don't have any rupees though.

@Yuuki that's what a currency exchange is for
I think I'll actually email the user to get price/shipping information
they might not want to ship to Canada

@BlueBarren If by "currency exchange" you mean "pots and tall grass", I'll have you know that the lawncare guys came by this weekend and I don't think we own any ceramics/pottery.

@Yuuki see also: wyverary

4:13 PM
@Yuuki sounds like the lawncare guys have enough Rupees

@Ash not the twitch ones anyway
I think you'll find the Arqade Discord emojis have been (mostly) handpicked by yours truly and are extremely effective at advancing polite, civil discourse between adults

Reminder: update @badp's definitions of "effective", "polite", "civil", "discourse", and "adults".

@badp are you assuming I'm an adult?

supporting edits in the proxy was a bad idea
or possibly supporting messages from @badp was where things went horribly wrong

@ToxicFrog :dealwithit:

4:34 PM

@Avery That comment definitely earned it's gold

yup
ugh, now I feel like making a new project that's basically "reddit but in newer frameworks" (implies she has any free time)

What is this "free time" you speak of?

idk man
wait wait wait

It's nothing

4:41 PM
@DanmakuGrazer *kn0thing

@Avery Oh, right, I remember when they announced that. It's like subreddits, but for a specific user instead of a topic. Or something like that

I really like seeing discord thrown itself down the drain
they should just give me (or rather someone with time) the domain and the company

@Avery what did they do now?

@GodEmperorDune they're phasing out CSS
@Avery *reddit

oh no one cares about reddit
they're riding high on all that money from /r/the_d

4:47 PM
renames @GodEmperorDune to "no one"

@badp rekt

@GodEmperorDune the_d isn't going to have their scrolling god emperor though

@Avery hue

@GodEmperorDune It's the 10th most popular website in the world

@murgatroid99 o.0

4:48 PM
wait
I memeingly said that
and turns out they DO have a scrolling trump banner

@fredley What's up?

@GodEmperorDune Or maybe it's actually 7th. I'm having a hard time interpreting the Alexa site rank numbers

@murgatroid99 how is it still popular after everyone fled to that site that let them be more hateful?
and all the complaints about lack of mod tools
etc

@murgatroid99 10
and #4 in USA

Q: Does building farms destroy strategic resources?

Souradeep NandaI am afraid to build farms or other improvements because I think I might accidentally replace a late game strategic resource like Uranium before it pops on the map. Is it a valid reason to be woried about or does the game handle it some other way?

@Avery According to alexa.com/topsites, it's 7.

@GodEmperorDune I think you are severely overestimating the proportion of the site's population that actually acts like that
@Avery I checked that page and said 10, then looked at topsites and saw that it said 7 and that's why I mentioned it

@murgatroid99 huh, that's weird
@GodEmperorDune voat is a mess too
considering they allow questionable content, I don't see it being around for too long either

@Avery stormfront is still going strong

4:58 PM
The fact is that the people who were mad about the closure of FPH and similar subreddits were a miniscule fraction of the people on the site. I'd bet it was no more than a couple hundred people. There are subreddits with more than a million subscribers
And there are tons of anonymous visitors who just read
But it's easier to fixate on the loud shitty people in the tiny minority because it lets you dismiss the entire thing without expending any significant mental effort

@GodEmperorDune by questionable I mean like really really illegal stuff

@Avery What really matters is whether it's illegal in the jurisdiction where it's hosted

heh (^ reddit's traffic stats)

Consider that 4chan still exists, and it has had some illegal shit posted on it in the past

8ch to 4chan is voat to reddit, and considering all 4 are still open, yeah, I guess.

5:08 PM
There are some very reasonable corners inside Reddit. But Reddit the company seems to hide behind "free speech" and allow all kinds of crap. I don't think they can just claim they're not responsible, it's still their platform.

yeah

@MadScientist It's more that there are unreasonable corners. The vast majority of the site is reasonable
You just don't get press about people having civil discussions about botany or whatever

The vast majority is crap, but not horribly offensive ;-)

The vast majority of everything is crap. That's not something you should judge any particular site by

I think that the continued voting abuse in /r/the_donald is deeply troublesome for the integrity of the site
especially when it comes to the numbers next to each post or comment
someone just picks how many thousand points a post should have, and then it just happens

5:23 PM
yup

the specific way in which it happens speaks to exactly how the website is fucked

t_d's vote abuse is tremendously problematic for reddit, and it's causing t_d problems- SAD!

but I guess there are only educated theories here, no facts

@badp You think it's news that online voting systems can be abused with sufficient dedication and time?

Q: Is there a way to know who the boss will be?

VemonusI haven't played too much yet, but just as I was getting used to a specific boss and knowing how to focus my builds to defeat it, I was shocked to challenge a different boss. I've now challenged three different bosses overall, but I can't seem to find any indication of who I'll be fighting until...

5:25 PM
@murgatroid99 it's news that it's been allowed to happen for a year

Upvotes are the dumbest thing in recent internet history

I don't think it even matters though. They get their large numbers, and it doesn't really affect anything

and the only actions being taken by the site administration is building new pages that aren't as easily gameable
@murgatroid99 if they can upvote things by thousands of votes dozens of time per day every day for a year without being stopped or hampered, they pretty much have complete control over the scores of everything
everything that is worth manipulating anyway
those numbers also affect what you do and do not read on the website

@badp And as long as they're only doing it in their containment sub (assuming they are actually manipulating votes there) it doesn't matter

on all subreddits, not just the_donald
@murgatroid99 do we have any proof that these accounts aren't voting anywhere else? that would be way too convenient in terms of detection and removal

5:29 PM
Do you have any evidence that any of this is happening? It sounds like a conspiracy theory

I thought your idea was more conspirace-y
an unholy alliance between reddit and the puppet masters saying, "so long as you only ruin this one subreddit we aren't going to stop you, do your worst"

I mean if we want to get into conspiracy theories I guess the next logical play is to accuse @murgatroid99 of being a Russian agent for calling this a conspiracy theory
I think that's how this works

@badp You're claiming that one shadow group is controlling all of the vote counts on all of reddit, and you're calling me a conspiracy theorist?

the alternative is considering the voting totals on /r/the_donald genuine
which is patently absurd.

Again, why should anyone care what they do to their own vote totals?

5:31 PM
there might be multiple groups manipulating votes.
@murgatroid99 you're already implying that this is being done by the subreddit mods

@badp What are you talking about?

@murgatroid99 you even put "their own" in italics

If /r/the_donald is manipulating the votes in /r/the_donald, I don't care

If /r/the_donald can manipulate the votes in /r/the_donald, they can manipulate it anywhere.
They probably do, to avoid detection.

Wait

5:32 PM
That's how I would do it anyway.

Do you have any evidence that they are manipulating votes anywhere?

Everywhere as in including arqade
Mother of god

@murgatroid99 How is that my point?
By saying "If /r/the_donald is manipulating the votes in /r/the_donald, I don't care" you are asserting that the reddit administration is being complicitly uncaring for the ongoing massive vote manipulation

I'm saying there are more important things to care about than vote manipulation in a containment sub

I'm saying that it makes me lose confidence in the entire basis of how reddit works: surfacing things based on the votes they get.
have you tried browsing reddit by new? it is possible, but it's not very pleasant.
the content is all there though!
however it's the only ordering that voting manipulation can't touch.
In a way, reddit continues to operate somewhat normally because /r/the_donald allows it to.

5:40 PM
@murgatroid99 that's like saying "random.se is organizing mass upvote events even though that's not allowed, and SE Inc. is turning a blind eye to it, and it's fine as long as it's only voting on that SE, and the +100 everywhere else and increased total rep count doesn't matter."
also I used and a bit too much there

@Avery to be fair reddit doesn't use user karma for anything.

@badp it does!

??

It displays on the page!
Such use very wow

@badp You seem to think that (assuming that there is voting manipulation), if they did start manipulating votes on the rest of reddit, that the admins wouldn't step in

5:43 PM
It's used on the spam detection stuff and on the captcha timer. More karma is seen as more reputable by those algorithms and well, if t_d were to organize an attack on another sub, they could get wayy too much more posts and comments in than the defending sub can get into t_d in the same amount of time.

At what date range is Steve. So, after searching online information about some animals, domestication dates (I l...

For all I know (assuming that there is voting manipulation), maybe the reddit admins are actively working on a solution

I pretend all subreddits are nuclear submarines of varying size.

@murgatroid99 t_d was banned from front page for voting manipulation IIRC, so I don't just "assume" it myself
here's a post on t_d itself -- it seems to be only visible on FP if you're logged in and subbed to t_d

@Lazers2.0 ... huh?

5:55 PM
@Avery I'll believe it when voting manipulation suddenly stops

Are they asking when Minecraft exists in real-time?

or at least it is a level or two of magnitude smaller than it is today

As in "Harry Potter is set in 1980-1990s"?

@Yuuki yup

and /r/the_donald gets upset and drama erupts

5:57 PM
We have the biggest drama. Hyoooge.

anyway

I already have it

@Avery That's how the front page works

signups on Ars are shut down atm

@murgatroid99 no, they changed it recently
it shows from all of reddit, similar to /r/all but a bit more... curated by algorithms?

/r/t_d was removed from /r/popular because it is one of the most commonly filtered out subreddits in /r/all
