@Yuuki I have to say this, because this bothers me a lot: I don't think pedophilia is in any way OK, but I also think that there is an unreasonably sharp line between sex offender and perfectly OK at midnight on the 18th birthday. This especially applies when people express attraction, as opposed to someone expressing an intent to have sex with someone
@murgatroid99 I get what you mean and to a certain degree, I concur. But there are more nuanced and better arguments to make than "well, technically pedophilia refers to pre-pubescent children so not 12-13 year olds".

@GodEmperorDune Like, I would even argue a bit if age of consent was to be taken down to 16, let alone 13. I'm going to go ahead and say that the R&J laws along with complete age of consent of 18 are good enough.
It just made me think of the conversations I've seen where someone says "I think it's OK to find 17 year olds attractive" "Now you're defending raping children" "It's not really the same thing" "Now you're just arguing semantics"
but milo straight up said that its ok for gay mentoring relationships to be sexual because consent was invented by the left and the mentoring makes it worthwhile
@GodEmperorDune I see it all the time, though. Any defense of any sort of sexual interaction or discussion with anyone under the age of <age of consent in my jurisdiction> is met with "now you're defending pedophiles".

@Yuuki But the distinction is important, because it's really not the same thing, and treating them as the same is unreasonable. Calling it all "pedophilia" without acknowledging any nuance is the same as saying that the person who's attracted to a 17 year old is just as bad as the guy in the unmarked van offering children candy.
@murgatroid99 I guess what I'm doing a really poor job of explaining is that when talking about this issue, you should follow up on the discussion. Leaving it at "it's not technically pedophilia" is both a poor argument and just poor rhetoric in general.
@GodEmperorDune I think it's also important to acknowledge that the age of consent in the jurisdiction that you currently live in is not some ultimate objective line between child and adult
