Apparently you don't need the .map and (9..12).sort just works, which I guess makes sense for ruby but I didn't even think to try.

it is a purely syntactical construct called a list
there is no thing holding them together.
you cannot directly assign that thing to a variable.

With it being changed a cone spell, her zoning isn't as strong as it used to be.

you can assign it to an array, then the array will take the values in that list.
you can assign it to a hash, then every odd element in the list gets stringified and becomes an hash key and every element after that is the value for that key.
you can assign it to a scalar, and then the scalar takes the number of elements in the list.
but the list is none of those things.
This is the source of endless confusion and frustration.
the only thing you can do that kinda keeps the list as it is is give it as the input to another function. That will read its input from the array named @_, which is not a list, but an array, and this increases the list-array confusion.
