Q: What is the significance of the '50th Eater of Souls message'

George WillcoxI recently purchased Terraria for my iPhone, and I'm getting along just fine; I've got experience from console and PC. When I was in the corruption farming rotten flesh, an orange message popped up stating: 50th Eater of Souls killed The same thing then happened at 100. But this hasn't happened...

@djsmiley2k I think he's too unpredictable to be sure about that conclusion

he'll die first?

And honestly, the expectation of 4-ish years of a Pence presidency isn't exactly a relief

@Yuuki I would suffer through the beef to have the cilantro sauce.

@Yuuki hmm yeah that doesn't sound good

@KevinvanderVelden Yeah, I think I'll bring down a plate from the office kitchen next time and ask them to put it on that.

Q: How do I build an incinerator that doesn't burn down my house?

John OUsually I have trouble acquiring items, but in 1.11 with a mending fishing rod I'm starting to have a problem I've never had before... too much junk. user15026
@Yuuki I was good until you said cilantro, cilantro ruins foods forever

@Ash I hear there's an actually identified gene that makes cilantro taste really bad for some percentage of people.

@Frank It's still in the box, unbuilt.

> The gene, OR6A2, lies within a cluster of olfactory-receptor genes, and encodes a receptor that is highly sensitive to aldehyde chemicals. Flavor chemists have found that the coriander aroma is created by a half-dozen or so substances, and most of these are aldehydes. Those who dislike the taste are sensitive to the offending unsaturated aldehydes, while simultaneously may also be unable to detect the aromatic chemicals that others find pleasant.

user15026
@Yuuki Basically it makes food taste like dirty soapy garbage.

7:47 PM
@Ash :(

@Ash One day, you will assimilate enough people so you can taste cilantro in a non-soapy way.
So look forward to that day.

am I the only one who never remembers who to declare an array?
I have to google it every time

8:11 PM
What language? =p

@BlueBarren Usually, you'd declare to Customs.
Unless it's domestic travel, in which case there's no need to declare.

@KevinvanderVelden all of them xD
or all the ones I use I should say
@Yuuki I never said who I was declaring the array to
could be the cops
I might want them to know I have a loaded array in the back seat of my 'rari

@BlueBarren Well yeah, you said you never remember.

Meh. I want to have to lookup how to declare an array, as a reminder that I should avoid using arrays.

That is acceptable

8:17 PM
@Yuuki if I ever get shot you'll know why
I used to not like arrays until I realized how useful they are for repetitive data

Err, lists, queues, vectors, etc
(C# lists which are just vectors, not linked lists)
(linked lists theoretically have a use, but not really)

@KevinvanderVelden so many collections

Non associative? Sets, binary trees, rb trees, deques, circular buffers, uuuh
Any other interesting ones I'm missing?

probably

Ooh tries are fun

8:21 PM
Dunno. I use IList for 95% of my collections.

Skip lists, heaps, stacks and queues (lifo/fifo)

dictionaries?

I'm just listing the non-associative interesting ones

I was talking about the book

Also not a non-associative data structure

Q: Creepers spawning im Mushroom Island

KjaraI am in a mushroom island biome, mining deep underground. There is an area where a lot of monsters spawn: zombies and skeletons. I did see a spawner somewhere near that crowd, so their appearence has an explanation. But while I tried to get away from the moster horde, I saw a creeper! As far as I...

@KevinvanderVelden Linked lists are useful for many things, like if you're storing large objects and you want to be able to insert or delete from the middle, and you list ordering needs to be arbitrary.
(i.e. there's a set order, but it can't be accomplished by performing comparisons)

I did not like working with linked lists in my Data Structures class and I did not like working with linked lists again when I was helping my friend with his Data Structures class.

@MBraedley if and only if the large object is multiple cache lines large then yes

@Yuuki See, I learned linked lists (and doubly linked lists) in highschool, and then breezed through that week's assignment in my university intro to programming 2 class.

8:35 PM
@MBraedley Linked lists weren't hard, per say. It was just frustrating because the instructor (both times) picked bad use cases.
So the entire time, I was griping about how arrays would be much simpler to implement and would make more sense.

I think it also helped in highschool that we were using the AP template classes, and APVector is implemented as a linked list.
(I'd be surprised if that class, if it's still taught in C++, isn't using STL now, though.)

I feel like C++ should not be taught in beginner programming classes, but I just might be a crazy person.

While it's pretty useful to understand linked lists, you probably won't implement them yourself anyway. Most languages have arrays and lists as core features now, so you just use them

On the one hand, memory management and pointers don't feel like something you should start a rookie on. On the other hand, I doubt many people would go for learning memory management and pointers unless they were forced into it as part of an introductory course.

And it's something you need to grok if you want to make performant, big scale programs

8:42 PM
I learnt it second year when I did my embedded systems project.

@Yuuki I feel the same way about java

Pointers as a concept are important. But my guess is that the vast majority of programming now happens in languages where you don't do stuff like pointer arithmetic

I definitely think that you should start learning with a language that makes it easy (or at least easier) to translate ideas and algorithms to code. Basically, Python

@Yuuki I agree, start with C. It's simpler in a lot of ways

@KevinvanderVelden No, COBOL. That way, you have something to rely on to find a job when you graduate.

8:43 PM
And then go to indeed something like python for advanced concepts

@MadScientist Well even in C++, you really shouldn't be using pointers anymore for any public facing stuff, and even private and protected stuff should be using smart pointers when needed.

But learning how variables and such work in a language that is that close to reality can seriously help

So much of modern programming does not involve pointers. That should almost be an elective for people that think they'll need it.

Just because something is hidden doesn't mean it's not a thing

The concept of references is important, in many languages you don't need to understand more than that

8:45 PM
@KevinvanderVelden C is close to reality in the specific sense that it's somewhat semantically close to the assembly representation of the processor instructions that are running the program

You can learn references vs. values without needing to know how to use pointers.

But it's still an abstraction, just a thinner one than in other languages

Aw, I forgot to repost my Zenyatta PotG this morning.

@KevinvanderVelden But if I were to implement a linked list from scratch in C++ today, I'd use some kind of smart pointer, not a bare pointer. I still need to know that pointers are a thing, but I can keep the details hidden from me.

But you still need to learn that it exists, and I think the best way to learn about something is not in a language that hides it from you

8:49 PM
@KevinvanderVelden By the exact same argument, I can say that you should be aware of registers, and that you shouldn't learn on a language like C that hides them from you

References exists in pretty much any language. Pointers as a value of a specific address in memory are an implementation detail in many higher level languages.

@KevinvanderVelden Okay, but there isn't anyone forcing you to use STL for everything. I can still do it the old fashioned way in modern C++.

You should be aware of binary, you shouldn't learn on a language like assembly that hides them from you.
Therefore, everyone should start learning machine code.

@murgatroid99 I disagree on that one, we have compilers that are better then you at register management in 99.9% of the cases; you don't really need to know how they work anymore
While with memory management that isn't the case
We have, at best, languages which clean up the garbage you leave behind

@KevinvanderVelden but that doesn't mean that you need to know the internal implementation of the memory management

8:52 PM
@KevinvanderVelden But with C++11 and C++14, you don't need to know how memory management works.

There's no value in knowing that Python probably represents a reference to an object as an annotated 64-bit unsigned integer

You really don't have to write a single new or delete ever again.

@KevinvanderVelden And provably do a better job at it than I do.

@JasonBerkan 99.9% of the time though?

@murgatroid99 I'm not advocating that far. I'm basically saying have the first class with "these are variables" be in something that let's you have differences between variables on the stack and variables on the heap

8:55 PM
@KevinvanderVelden Why? The stack/heap are C-specific implementations of memory management.
It's not some fundamental thing

@JasonBerkan not really, a more complete job, perhaps. But better? Not really

Function scoping isn't even universal

Actual image of @KevinvanderVelden:

@Unionhawk not really, I'm not advocating drop everything and program in everything in C++
I'm advocating take babysteps in a simple subset of a simple language

Fine, s/if you're not/if you haven't
or whatever

8:59 PM
@Unionhawk Oh yeah, that's when we discovered that @Uni's romantically interested in programming languages.
2 days ago, by Unionhawk
@TimStone omg c#

I just found it hilarious

@Unionhawk Suuure.

@KevinvanderVelden And I'm arguing that too much hand-holding is a bad thing.

Because to a certain extent, C# is just C++ with a garbage collector (and, some other stuff too)

@Unionhawk And no templates >:(

9:01 PM
@Unionhawk It's more like Java but pretending it's not Java

@murgatroid99 Well, yeah

It actually doesn't have that much in common with C++

It's Java pretending it's C++ with a garbage collector

What does it have in common with C++

@Unionhawk I'm with @murgatroid99. It's C++, but without pointers (and templates, apparently).

9:02 PM
Sorta the style with the curly braces and everything?
But then many many languages have that

@KevinvanderVelden Basic syntax

They both start with "C"
Also, if you mash "++" together the right way, you get "#"

@KevinvanderVelden They're both not Objective-C.

@Yuuki So they're not the very definition of terrible

When I got my first Mac, I figured I would learn to code on it. Took one look at Objective-C and ran screaming the other direction.

9:04 PM
I've taken a look at Objective-C code and my gut reaction was "ohgodno, @spugly pls". Now my question is what's bad about it that anyone can put into words.

I bought a mac to code too

> @interface classname : superclassname {
// instance variables
}
+ classMethod1;
+ (return_type)classMethod2;
+ (return_type)classMethod3:(param1_type)param1_varName;

- (return_type)instanceMethod1With1Parameter:(param1_type)param1_varName;
- (return_type)instanceMethod2With2Parameters:(param1_type)param1_varName param2_callName:(param2_type)param2_varName;
@end

but the difference is I never even looked at objective-c

I've never touched Objective-C, so I have no idea in what ways it's absolutely horrible.

THAT IS WHAT IS WRONG WITH IT

9:05 PM
That doesn't look anything like C

@Yuuki The syntax is confusingly unfamiliar. The syntax for defining closures is substantially different from the syntax for defining functions. All of the symbols are used to mean weird, unusual things.

My issue was that it used really odd and convoluted syntax in order to kludge stuff on top of C.

> MyObject *o = [[MyObject alloc] initWithString:myString];

@murgatroid99 Yeah, I was wondering if there was anything other than the syntax.

9:06 PM
MORE of what is wrong with it

That's actually looks a lot more like UML than anything else.

@Yuuki It's hard to remember past that

Because I already know Objective-C looks non-Euclidean.

@KevinvanderVelden Oh yeah, initialization and allocation are done separately, most of the time

It has some neat things actually, message parsing as a language feature is interesting

9:08 PM
Honestly, I think its biggest problem really is syntax

But, well, I don't think it's worth the risk of accidentally awakening the elder gods and drowning the world in a sea of blood
Perl is bad enough

In my mind, good code needs to be easily readable and easily writeable. Objective-C ain't either.

@KevinvanderVelden Accidentally? I feel like eldritch rituals are required to be able to write and read Objective-C.

Ugh

@Yuuki there's just one misplaced @ between a compiling objective-c program and ending the world

9:10 PM
@JasonBerkan This is why I really like Python. Of all languages, it's the one where I can most easily write a program that does what I want, and understand a program by reading it

Yeah

Python is great and does all the things

And that's why I think Python is a good language to teach introductory programming

I do see the beauty in LISP. I just find it really hard to actually write it

cc @Sterno
I guess @JasonBerkan if I have to.

You don't because it's funnier to watch @Sterno defend himself with the whole "not the oldest in the room" thing

@Yuuki :P Also, I chuckled at that this morning.

Ugh, when's the next what-if comic?

9:16 PM
I am literally concerned about the number of tiny models I have in my basement waiting for me to paint and how little time I probably have before I cannot easily paint tiny models.

@JasonBerkan You just need to get your kids into painting models, so you can paint models and spend time with the kis at the same time

@Wipqozn My kids have made it worse by deciding they like miniature games with smaller models!

@JasonBerkan that would make it worse

because warhammer is basically "I hate money, the game"

@Wipqozn Yes, he has. I think almost all the books he reads are WWII based, as are the documentaries he watches.

10:00 PM
i like pastamancer
it's my go to class these days
mainly because spell damage is overpowered in aftercore

@GodEmperorDune PM moreso since you can tune to every element.
If there was a more reliable way to deal Elemental damage with the other classes, I'd play them more.
But as it is, Mysticality is ridiculous.

@Yuuki i actually don't use that much tuning
mainly blast with saucegeyser
because yay, uncapped
but the Pastamancer thralls are fun
and yeah, mysticality vs scaling monsters is awesome

Yeah. I know aftercore's not their priority, but I wish they'd balance the usefulness of the other classes.
Part of the reason why I haven't been getting on lately is that I'm dreading the fact that my next runs will be DB and AT for the Sea Monkee storyline.
