Q: What video game are these ninjas from?

TroyAndAbedIn the movie Pixels, Josh Gad's character battles several chibi-style ninjas that are assaulting a school bus. I do not recognize what video game these ninjas are from. In the film, all the games that appear are from the 80's. What game are they from?

@Lazers2.0 Huh. I first though it was Mini Ninja, but that's not an 80s game, is it?
Double Dragon?

@Yuuki Double Dragon doesn't have any ninjas that look like stereotypical ninjas in it.

I can't think of an NES game with stylized Ninjas like that
I mean... Ninja Gaiden had ninjas, but they didn't look like that

Probably Ninja Gaiden. I don't really expect accuracy in an Adam Sandler movie.
No matter how much he likes games.

7:10 PM
Apparently Pixels is a new low for him

@Lazers2.0 They look so generic, they could be from any ninja-themed game

That's what the reviews are saying, at least

@twobugs Every new movie of his is a new low.
2

Fair enough.

The one review of this movie said that it was the best Adam Sandler / Kevin James movie, but that wasn't saying much.

user15026
7:12 PM
@twobugs I wanted to see the movie because the concept sounded good but when I learned it was a Sandler thing, I lost all interest
2

@AshleyNunn Same. I thought some of the posters looked neat.

user15026
@twobugs Yeah, when a friend described it to me, I was like hell yes I could totally enjoy that.

user15026
But Adam Sandler ruins things.

I can't remember liking a movie of his after 2000 or so (maybe a little into the early 2000s). I was 10 years old back then.

Possibly because of the preponderance of 10 year old humour in his movies.
Honest to god, I've outlawed the word "poop" at the supper table, because once one kid says it, all control is lost.

7:20 PM
Aww come on.. When's the next XKCD What-If?

@MadMAxJr 5 seconds from now.
No wait, it gets delayed 1 month every time someone asks...
1 month and 0 seconds from now.

@Powerlord Maybe if we rig this timer with an arena timer, we'll get a What-If WITH A HAT.

adds a team_round_timer

@AshleyNunn i had the exact smae thought
@JasonBerkan snickers

Speaking of TF2 mapping things, at some point I'm going to try making a hybrid CTF KOTH map.
I think it's possible to actually do, so I'm going to fake up something to test it.

7:24 PM
@Powerlord Have to hold a flag to capture the point?

@MadMAxJr You grab the flag and take it to your base to start the KOTH clock. Once you capture it, a new flag that only the enemy can capture appears in your base as well as a bunch of alternate routes in your base opening. KOTH clock stops while the flag is out.
In theory, I know how to wire all this up already.

So once you take the lead, your base weakens itself with a bunch of new paths. No point to hold?

@MadMAxJr Exactly.

Just defend the new flag that spawned?

@MadMAxJr Yup.

7:26 PM
This sounds like two CP_Steels latched onto each other.

But keep in mind that the KOTH clock stops every time the enemy takes the flag. It'll probably need the touch to return mechanic from Mannpower enable for balance stuffs, though.

I saw a video that showed what Powerhouse was meant to be and why Valve likely rejected it. Gotta say, the final result isn't too bad, but I was intrigued by some of the original ideas for forking train paths
er.. not powerhouse
The winter one. Originally meant for End of the Line

@GodEmperorDune good, unless somehow SourceForge gets in even eviler hands

More evil?
It could inject pre-load ads directly into your source code!
Watch an ad and earn 50 more database insert operations!

7:37 PM
i remember back when slashdot was a thing

More evil than the site turning onto its users to reown "abandoned" FOSS projects and wrap them in crapware installers, while also having download links labeled "Trusted for Open Source"

@badp so you're thinking microsoft will buy them?

for those who aren't in the loop
@GodEmperorDune this isn't 2001 anymore, I think #1 evil is still probably Oracle

Microsoft Sourceforge: The SourceSafe for 2015!
DONT SAY ORACLE
We could get popups to install the Ask toolbar in here. D:

ugh, oracle sucks so much

7:39 PM
I require @TimStone's educated opinion

appears

Some call him.... Tim.
The enchanter!

What am I opining on?

i don't understand how a company that makes such high end DBs can have the shittiest performance on all of its web apps for enterprise
not to mention the damn java UI

Oracle is conveniently a terrible database too so it works out.
But to be fair you can blame Sun for most of Java's failings, it's actually gotten better since Oracle.

7:41 PM
functionality wise, i fully agree
although i suppose you can't blame the language for the weird crap that devs do with it

Oracle SQL Developer, or how to allocate 400 MB to run a single Select statement

You can totally blame the language. You may or may not be justified in doing so, but you can definitely do it.

... I've had to sling some Oracle SQL...
I have looked into the depths of PLSQL... and it looked back.

@MadMAxJr I've seen some nasty tsql too

I also learned DELETE [Table] CASCADE is nasty

7:44 PM
@GodEmperorDune Java mistrusts its programmers so when the time to get shit done comes, you only have so many ways to abuse the system, so you gotta abuse them all to their fullest

@badp so what java needs is a "mod abuse" mode

My #1 dislike for Java is the "everything is an object" lie. SO MANY THINGS ARE NOT OBJECTS. It's insane

yeah i've had fun with autoboxing... when is an int not an Int? whenever it damn well feels like it

The Java garbage collector must be a union worker. "I'm still using that!" "Don't care, have a work order to remove this."

OutOfMemoryException: GC Overhead Limit Exceeded

7:46 PM
@MadMAxJr imo its more like "I'm still using that!" "ok, i will NEVER EVER TRY TO COLLECT IT AGAIN"

And then the collector goes on break, never to return.
"Hey, collector.. is that leaking?" "Yep." "Are you... going to try to mitigate that." "Nopes."

Equally not objects: null, true, 2, String (but not String.class, because fields are evil everyone), String.substring (but I guess this is sorta understandable because overloading)

String.toString().reallyIWantAString().pleaseJustGiveMeTheString();

Pair<String, Pair<Float, String>>

At least Java cares about strongly typed variables. I mostly work in Javascript. I weep at variables.

7:49 PM
FOUR_TWO.equals(x)

Okay array, give me your value! [ERROR]

because the other way around can NPE
and hardcoding constants is evil

@MadMAxJr I'm pretty sure you can subscript just about anything in JS without getting an error

@badp yeah, you should read them out of one of many properties files

Even primitives

7:51 PM
@GodEmperorDune then import them all at once
**.properties
Of course you'll only read them once at start-up and that's it.
Want to change them, restart everything and try again in seven minutes
oh dear another Spring exception that basic static analysis would have caught. Whoops daisy! Seven more minutes of hate restarting for you.

@badp only seven minutes? you must have a top of the line machine

@GodEmperorDune we've resorted to developing and testing directly on QA
there's another tier between that and production anyway!!
and the machines we've got require definitely more than seven minutes per each developer per restart of lost productivity
(It has been working out surprisingly well considering.)
We still can't automate away the click through bullshit "one-time self install" Liferay procedure
which is done one-time per server restart
which is stupid
Meanwhile the "competing" internal Java website takes 15 seconds to fire up in debug mode on the same machines as ours, but its business tier is almost uselessly lenient and error-prone
> You said this was a numeric field but this is a String. Oh! I know. You're getting "".

@MadMAxJr If you want to see nasty PLSQL, wait until you get to work with Oracle packages and types. With Oracle Spatial data and workspaces.

@Powerlord Limited experience with packages. Never want to do that again.

I wouldn't be surprised if we were one of the larger Oracle Spatial implementation. Particularly with all the neat bugs we have found in it.

8:08 PM
Welcome to Oracle Space. It's like normal space, but you have to have a license to be in it. Take THAT Elon Musk.

Q: How to make use of LotV pre-order beta?

MrFoxI pre-ordered the LotV and now I want to play the beta. How do I do that? I've searched the UI but all it says is "Playing Heart of the Swarm". Great, now how do I change that to the LotV beta? It promises direct access.

Yeah we must take at least 2 uninterrupted weeks a year

8:46 PM
Over here, it's often two weeks if you're an employee, and you get glared at if you take more than a week.
As a contractor, I don't get time off. I was denied getting three days off a year because I asked for a raise and they refused to do both.

@MadMAxJr O__O
As a contractor myself, I'm sorry.
(I hope no one here works for Accenture.)

Also when the company has holidays, I have the choice of either WORKING that holiday or taking the day unpaid....... yay.
