2:00 PM
Vita!

And I think they announced the sequel for PS4?

cc @GraceNote

2:00 PM
@originaluser GIB PLS

Great concept for an open world game. You fly around and control gravity

@GraceNote is your Code Review one from Cave Story?

Yeah, it's Curly Brace from Cave Story

That's what I thought

geddit?

2:04 PM
The Deadpool movie has finished filming.
#Deadpool has been a privilege to make. And we got to make this film because of you. Gonna eat a samich now. #wrapped http://t.co/AMW68HD2BI

@GraceNote oh here you go
that game is a goldmine for this shit

So, how about those (insert sports team here)?

@originaluser I forget, were you the one who was saying they were going to eventually get around to playing Doom 3?

@Powerlord Yeah, I have the original version on my Steam account

2:07 PM
I made the mistake of starting the game on Marine difficulty (the second of four difficulties). With the exception of like one area, that's been WAY too easy.

@Rapitor the 2nd one says your application got rejected, most likely from a russian TV channel or something. You probably didn't apply for anything there, but maybe worth knowing?

I spend most of my time with full armor and life.

Okay, I'll crank the difficulty past Marine then

@Wipqozn And that is?

2:08 PM
@Chippies i don't even know why i get russian emails.

Is the BFG version worth it? I only have vanilla
I bought the Doom pack way back when so I have Doom 1/2 as well

@Rapitor no idea, I don't get russian emails

robot leg girl best girl

@originaluser I'm not even sure what the differences are. Other than the Flashlight mod being part of the base game.

I never got that far in the first NMH

2:08 PM
@GnomeSlice When are you going to be finished?

@Powerlord When I run out of people in NMH
There's a lot

I love the first NMH, played the second one but never beat it.
Second was a better game but I felt like it lacked some of the charm of the first one

The second one stripped out all the unnecessary stuff from the first one, but the first one was definitely less serious
First one had too much grinding for cash though
Never finished it

@originaluser Anyway, if you do play the standard version, get the Duct Tape mod. Otherwise, you have to alternate between using the Flashlight or using a gun.

@Powerlord Ah, will do. That sounds annoying

2:10 PM
@GnomeSlice So, a few hours? I want to know how long it should be until I unmute you.

Nah I'm done now

There was grinding in the first one for sure, especially if you wanted the best beam katana
but there was a map you could grind for money easily
and I liked the combat

@GnomeSlice Anime-Manga

@originaluser The baseball one?

has a good graphics comparison between the two

2:12 PM
That was one of the images I looked at before picking the one I went with though

@GraceNote Ah shit, thought that might have been her

(this is the opening cutscene)

@GnomeSlice There was a late game event when you could just fight a bunch of people for a sidequest and it was right next to the sidequest place
So you could grind things out super quick
I really should finish the second game sometime

I gotta go for a doctor's appointment
bleh
Gravity Rush for PS4 would be awesome

I hope they release it on the Wii U store like they've done for a few other Wii games, because it's annoying to swap discs
The downside is the Wii U internal storage is tiny

2:15 PM
I need to remember from where this came up.
12

Oh yeah, playing Doom 3 again reminded me of how much farther ahead Valve was than iD on facial animation

@Powerlord wow, they really improved the visuals in BFG version, it actually looks more playable now, since everything's not pitch black

@Chippies Well, the BFG Edition was nearly a decade newer.

Steam used to charge you less for the BFG Edition if your account had the original edition on it. Not sure if that's still true.

Q: Can laptop display 144Hz on extern display?

HugoTorI have a MSi GE70, and I think the screen can display 60FPS max, then 60Hz. But I would like to buy a 24' 144Hz, and I was wondering if I plug it with HDMI or DVI, the external monitor can display the 144Hz, or the laptop will limit 60Hz ?

@Powerlord I didn't realize BFG was an actual remake, figured it was like a GOTY with some minor fixes/changes

@GraceNote hahahahahahahaha

@Chippies BFG Edition also includes Doom 1 and 2.

@Powerlord ah, didn't know that either

2:18 PM
Including the odd 9 level addon campaign for Doom 2.
I forget the name of it.

@GraceNote Yeah, seems right

@Powerlord If it's still true the mobile client doesn't seem to display it, but mobile steam is awful

@StrixVaria at least it wasn't wailord.

Wailord is less dense than air.

2:22 PM
Isn't Macargo hotter than the surface of the sun or something?
The Pokemon world is a nightmarish hell dimension

@originaluser I remember hearing something about this.

pokemon is weird.

Oh huh, I never even noticed the healthpacks in Doom and Doom 2 had their graphics changed to remove red crosses and have pills on them instead.
Well, I did notice, I just didn't realize it was a change.

Yeah, Macargo is like 15,000 degrees whereas the photosphere is 6000
Corona is slightly higher at 1 to 2 million K
I can't type today

@GraceNote The master of unlocking

2:26 PM
Anna Marie finally got around to telling me that she and Chris bought RPGamer from Mikel.

RPGamer is in new hands now?

@GraceNote Yes. I told Anna Marie that she and Chris should really update the staff page to reflect this.

Interesting.
I used to visit that place a lot. It was one of the first websites I ever frequented.

They're both on the staff page already (as RPGCast Producer and Media Relations I think)
@GraceNote Oh, then you might have already known I was on the staff at several points in the past.

Oh? Which sections?

2:29 PM
@GraceNote Music the first time, MMOs the second.

Why can't i watch Kung Fury Q-Q

Ah, you might've been running music when I was around there. I want to say that was early 2000s.

I also did a bit of backend programming there, but Mikel was very territorial about that.

@Serverfrog why can't you? Technical issues or... ?

no, i live in germany. The land where Everythings slighty about nazi or the WW2 is mostly banned

2:32 PM
@Serverfrog ah, that blows. Is the video banned both on Steam and Youtube?

@Serverfrog So, you're the reason why Doom 3 BFG Edition doesn't have Hitler Portraits and such in it?!
:P

you can probably download it somewhere, like piratebay or something
it is free after all

i don't find a youtube video of it

@Serverfrog Was Inglourious Basterds banned in Germany?
That movie was good.

yhea but it's quit annoying

2:33 PM
@Serverfrog probably banned then

@StrixVaria no but mostly censored...

the only reason I haven't watched Kung Fury yet is because I don't want to stream it and I haven't seen any legit download options and been too lazy to go to piratebay...

@Chippies if you donate $5 you get a digital copy

@GnomeSlice aka if you buy the free movie, you get a copy

So yeah, after reading that list of differences between Doom 3 and Doom 3 BFG Edition earlier, I then read the next section... the differences between the versions of Doom 1 and 2 and the versions included in Doom 3 BFG Edition.

2:34 PM
For download, yes.

I'm cheap and jobless, I'm not paying for a free movie, I don't even pay for non-free movies

@Chippies whats wrong with youtube?

I don't even watch movies

It notes that the textures that used to be Hitler portraits are now textured the same as normal walls.
and that all SS troopers were replaced with standard zombies.

@Rapitor Idk, I prefer watching movies in MPC, youtube is for shorter stuff

2:35 PM
Idk why they used youtube and not vimeo

but I'll probably watch it on youtube eventually
@GnomeSlice because youtube has a better player

King fury is only 30 mins long ish

@GnomeSlice because vimeo is junk

@GnomeSlice really? I thought it was longer than that
I suppose I'll watch it when wife goes to work later

Vimeo is much better for high quality video

2:37 PM
not anymore. youtube fully supports pretty much every video format (even 4k) and 60fps

@GnomeSlice not if it's encoded right, which, I'm sure someone serious enough would figure out how to do
pretty much any video I upload on youtube looks the same on YT as it does locally

Including 360 degree video
OBSERVE

youtube compression bullshit doesn't really happen anymore

@Unionhawk now that's just witchcraft

2:38 PM
RIGHT

@Unionhawk there's actually quite a few 360 degree videos on youtube

Apparently it's done with like, 20 gopros in a circular formation or something ridiculous

@AshleyNunn Yikes

i don't even know what hola is

2:42 PM
@AshleyNunn well, that's... not cool...
how am I now gonna watch american Netflix? :(

The issue came to light after the moderator of the controversial 8chan forum — an off-shoot of 4chan that has been criticized for acting as an "active pedophile network" — reported that the site had been the target of multiple DoS attacks from Hola's network.
Well then

user15026
@chippies I use a paid VPN option, and now I am very glad I do.

@Rapitor It makes websites think you're really in the U.S. Or, in my case for the winter Olympics, that I was in Canada
Since fucking NBC

@Chippies pay $5 a month I guess

@Unionhawk NBC is the worst

2:44 PM
I always wonder about the reverse of this, though

@GnomeSlice I assume you mean pay 5$ to Hola, which why would I after knowing their shitty practices?

@AshleyNunn Whoa. Well, no more Hola

@AshleyNunn I don't really have any other uses for a VPN other than couple things on Netflix that I watch like once every couple months maybe

Like, would it be ethical for companies (say, McAfee) to "donate" unused CPU cycles if they were using them to fold proteins?

@TimStone Like I said, CBC in Canada

2:45 PM
I guess I'll just not watch american netflix

@originaluser Without express user permission, no
Opt-in basis permission

I stopped using Hola once I learned how it worked. I was uneasy with them having access to my bandwidth, even for their legitimate purpose of allowing @Unionhawk to impersonate a Canadian.

@Unionhawk Well, you can make the argument that these cycles would just be wasted and this way they're being used to benefit humanity

@Unionhawk the thing is (if i'm reading all this correctly) Hola did explain exactly what they were doing. people just ignore those details.

You use your cycles how you want and I'll use mine how I want

2:47 PM
"Hola's founder Ofer Vilenski has said that the site has "always made it clear" how this business model works, but Hola's users seem to have been almost universally unaware that their bandwidth was being sold off. "

@Rapitor I think this gets into whether or not TOS agreements are really binding, especially if companies intentionally hide really shady things in them

I just wanted to experience the Olympics. NBC wasn't covering it adequately, so I had no choice

@Rapitor I don't remember ever agreeing to potentially joining a botnet

I think some court's ruled that hiding stuff in the TOS isn't binding.

@Yuuki Probably european

2:48 PM
I think you can make a pretty strong argument that they aren't binding. People don't read the fine print and companies take advantage of that (i.e. here)

At least I have a vague feeling to that notion.

If I had to guess
And I do have to guess since I'm too lazy to find out

@Unionhawk I think it was actually an American court.

Something like that needs to have its own page "I agree that my bandwidth can be used without my express knowledge or approval"

I think there needs to be some sort of agreement between developer and user, but current TOS agreements do not sufficiently cover that

2:50 PM

Also, this is tangential but it made me think about to some discussions in one of my security courses
Malware and other "parasitic" programs are starting to mirror biological interactions
in that they're trending towards mutualism

@SaintWacko I mean, it's kinda...the nature of the product isn't it?

in that the developer of the malware has a vested interest in protecting your computer from anything bad

@Rapitor I also don't remember ever seeing this page when I installed the extension

It's just instead of some other free member using your bandwidth it's someone paying for it.

2:51 PM
and they have a vested interest in not annoying you the user enough that you get rid of it

BY USING THIS SOFTWARE YOU IMPLY A FORFEITURE OF YOUR IMMORTAL SOUL TO THE DEVELOPER OF THE SOFTWARE FOREVER

@originaluser that sounds like an interesting topic actually

Anyway, you're always the product.

Hey, I just thought of the best security question
"What is your security question?"

@originaluser well yeah. malware and botnets need the host computer to work, why would they break it or screw with it.

2:53 PM
@Powerlord That's literally the dumbest thing I've heard

@GnomeSlice Yeah, I thought it was super cool. It's forcing some malware developers to write their own anti-virus software to protect from other malware
And encouraging them to run the malware operations with lower priority so to disturb the user as little as possible

Q: How can I get a dwarf to adopt a tame vermin?

Unknown ZombieI have captured and tamed several vermin-type creatures (such as Olms, Fluffy Wamblers, and Cap-Hoppers). After taming them, I have used the stocks screen to mark them as being available for adoption. There are a few of these tamed creatures inside the original traps they were caught in, and a f...

@originaluser so... Norton?

@Unionhawk Have you seen most security questions banks and such use?

That's pretty cool

2:54 PM
@Rapitor No, because these ones work :)

And also a bit fuct if you ask me

@originaluser Natural selection, whoo!

[insert bubbles]

@GnomeSlice Yep. It was what raised the question of "well, what if norton decides to do this with cancer research?" and nobody really has a good response for that yet

Express user permission.
I don't care about "WELL YOU'RE WASTING CLOCK CYCLES"

2:55 PM
@Unionhawk But as we established with Hola, it's not really that simple :)

I'm sure I've seen somewhere before where you could opt in to donating cycles for scientific research

i don't really care either way. I'm not using it. do what you want

Explaining to an average user what is going to happen with your spare cycles is not a simple task

It just hasn't really caught on I guess

@originaluser It's different in that case because the permission is implied (IMO) by the nature of the application

user15026
2:56 PM
It doesn't matter how holy your intentions, you should still be required to expressly ask in a very obvious way for things like that. Throwing it in a TOS you know people won't read isn't the way.

@AshleyNunn I agree, I just think this is an interest frontier we're trying to break ground on and develop adequate policy

@originaluser It's still unethical if they don't disclose it. In fact, it's probably illegal.

user15026
@originaluser we already have adequate policy, people are just dancing around it.

@AshleyNunn This. While it may be technically allowable to just put it in the ToS, it's really morally ambiguous, and certainly not nice

The thing is there are lots of software programs/suites/whatever that do undisclosed things which are very shady

2:58 PM
@originaluser It does raise an interesting question about natural selection because if we were to look at malware in that way, they have evolutionary goals in addition to the simple "spread as quickly and as much as possible".

user15026
Stuff that uses it for good is very obvious and they always explain it to you in detail. This is not that.

Such "do something that makes the author money".

@originaluser I mean, it is that simple though

user15026
@originaluser just because others do it doesn't make the cases that come to light any better

user15026
Yeah, people do shady Shit with my stuff, doesn't preclude me from the right to be hella pissed when I find out

2:59 PM
@Yuuki Yeah. And the flip side of this is mutualistic relationships trend towards parasitism. So better keep your eye on norton/mcafee

@originaluser I think those have already gone beyond the pale.
