It still amuses me in Doom/Doom 2 that monsters/players are considered to be infinitely tall for bounding rectangles for melee attacks/jumping.

...but not for hits by weaponry or for movement.

Seriously, you can't jump over an enemy in Doom.

@Powerlord have you tried jumping higher?

and you could be on a ledge a mile high and attack an enemy on the ground with melee hits

@Chippies Doom has no jump button, so in this case, it's more falling off a ledge.

also, I thought weapons in doom shot everything in a vertical line through the middle of your screen

since you can't aim up or down

However, for projectiles/hitscan weapons, they need to be in your field of view.

I think the Doom engine that Heretic uses was modified to support vertical stuffs.

I know you can fly around in Heretic and I think you can fly over enemies.

I remember before mouse aiming really took off, at one point we were doing network games where two players were at one computer to do the flying parts of Heretic.

The BFG mechanics in Doom are pretty rad

I don't remember the exact values but it launches an invisible shot, when this shot collides with something it branches off into smaller shots

Speaking of the BFG... I played more multiplayer deathmatch Doom 2 back in the day than single player, so when I went through Doom 2 singleplayer, I expected to find the BFG down the pit in map2...

...and it wasn't there because it's flagged deathmatch only.

Oh yeah, speaking of Doom 2, I have a question I should post to Arqade

I love that the Doom soundtrack was written in large part by a lawyer who knew exactly how much he could "borrow" from popular songs without getting sued

Does anyone know the design decision behind pause screens in JRPGs? Seeing as a separate button (normally triangle) pauses the game and sends you to a menu with inventory etc. it seems rather pointless to have just a pause screen.

@GridleyQuayle Most RPGs track how long you spend playing the game.

Pause screen doesn't count towards that, menus usually do.

Consoles often have design rules that must be obeyed, such as pausing the game when the pause button is pressed.

Map was either Left Bumper or Left Trigger (it was Select on PS1) while the menu was Back/Select (it was Start on PS1).

Seriously? I would have assumed working on VMs given unassigned computers.

They have an internal lync server but we don't even have accounts on it.

@JasonBerkan We need to run 3 GB of ram's worth of Java each on top of Norton.

So that's like 5 GB of ram. Also disk access times are sufficiently awful as they currently are on dedicated hard drives.

I'm with @fredley. That is a terrible idea.
