9:00 PM
@GnomeSlice A SLAVE WAITS. A MAN ACTS.

@badp like this group of sidewalk clogging dirtbags:

TIL the DMCA has an entire section dedicated to the fact that boat hulls are not considered to be covered under copyright law

@LessPop_MoreFizz usually the situation is resolved by overflowing on the street

What

9:01 PM
@badp that's a good way to get killed in NY.
Unless by "overflowing on the street" you mean "shoving the offending slow-sauntering tourists into the street".
In which case, I approve.

@LessPop_MoreFizz You can just say 'excuse me' and ask to be let by them

I remember being in a meet up with a couple Germans, an Austrian, a Slovakian and a Panamanian. You could tell who the Italian and the Panamanian were just by seeing how we approached sidewalks

Pretty sure nobody ever would say 'no'.

@LessPop_MoreFizz to be fair this particular fond memory I'm recalling happened in the quiet streets in the centre of Wien
Wien is a nice city
Munich, too.
Amsterdam also.

@GnomeSlice we are talking about New York City here, not Pleasantville McNowherestown. Ain't nobody got time for that bullshit.

9:05 PM
Whatever
Stay behind them and be mad then

Oh if the option is staying behind them then either overtake on the street or hasten the pace audibly
Maybe grunt something

Who said anything about being stuck behind them? The problem is that they don't have the presence of mind to avoid head on collisions and provide no place for me to move around them.

Yeah, well, not everybody is very observant
Are you even in a hurry

Sidewalks in NY are like roads. Groups like that are doing the equivalent of driving on the wrong side of the highway.

@LessPop_MoreFizz Up ahead of them is two people coming the opposite way doing the same thing

9:07 PM
This is socially deviant and destructive behavior, and it ought not be tolerated.

@LessPop_MoreFizz can't tell if trolling

Two abreast is fine. There is enough space for two and two. Four abreast is BadWrongWalking.
#HotWalkTakes
You know who else walked four abreast?

@fredley The funny thing is I actually say 'horses ovaries' when referring to hors d'oeuvres sometimes just to be funny.

@LessPop_MoreFizz I don't think that's a really accurate correlation.

9:15 PM
@GnomeSlice now you are just being contrary to rile me up. Well I won't have it. I won't be drawn in by your trolling. I am going to make myself some food. Have a nice day.

@Lazers2.0 No doge. No dose either

@LessPop_MoreFizz If there is room for two abreast both way there is room for one abreast both ways and a car.

@badp why are you letting cars on the sidewalk?

9:28 PM
@LessPop_MoreFizz Double the parking spaces

Nobody drives in New York. There's too much traffic.

There isn't enough parking room so people have to keep going in circles!
Here's a real world example close to where I work
You can see diagonal parking on walkways, double parking on walkways, parking over middle-of-the-street random walkways, or where normal traffic needn't go.
Those are the basic strategies really.
This was probably 7:40am, plenty of parking spaces still left

Yeah, no. New Yorkers aren't savages.

Debatable

@LessPop_MoreFizz Oh please. Be stuck in traffic for eleventy hours all you want. Be my guest.
We solve practical problems.

9:40 PM
I am so glad I commute by train

@Ixrec I also commute by train, but sometimes I have to go by car.

Q: Looking for a 90s arcade I can't remember its name

Matteo MoscaIt's been some time I've been trying to find an old game but I can't remember its name. I have a few details though. It's a game similar to King of Dragons and Magic Sword Heroic Fantasy. I remember as a distinctive trait that the game began in a village, and you could talk to people. At the end...

Nobody drives in New York. There's too much traffic.

@LessPop_MoreFizz You clearly aren't seeing that your restraint in the matters of parking is the source of all your trouble

I don't think New York has wide enough sidewalks to support that parking strategy
also, it has way too many street lights and newspaper boxes
(at least in the bit I've visited)

9:42 PM
Well that sounds like a good place to start then!
If the city really doesn't want you to park someplace they'll just do this :(

;_;
It's true

@GnomeSlice yeah samus is pretty hot in smash bros

I mean the fact that metroid as a franchise doesn't really exist any more

i haven't played anything since the prime trilogy

could be worse, at least they aren't churning out an endless series of crappy sequels

9:47 PM
I suppose...
hue

Oh man, so much Elite science

That's from a few years ago though, prices have gone up since then
Ah yes, here we go
£480,000

@fredley what in the fuck

Wow that's terrifying science that makes me want to outfit shield cells again

@GnomeSlice Land is expensive.

10:01 PM
I got to 23, and then I typed Kentucky, which is number 26. :( Now you got a free hint!

@LessPop_MoreFizz New Jersey?

@GnomeSlice Click link and find out for yourself!
(Yes, New Jersey is a correct answer. So are Texas and New York and California. Telling you those is not going to make it easier. :P)

@LessPop_MoreFizz 7

I can't even name 25 states

10:06 PM
@GnomeSlice Bet you could without realizing it.

I dunno probably not
Is Hawaii a state

@GnomeSlice Yes. Yes it is.
@fredley What was the wrong one that you tried to type as your 8th?

I'm running out of states I think are probably in the top half

Arkansas North dakota South dakota New york New jersey Connecticut Texas California North carolina South carolina Ohio Hawaii Alaska Washington Massachussets... nope I'm dry.

Ah damn 21.

10:08 PM
i am clean

@LessPop_MoreFizz Connecticut
I though the East Coast was densley populated!?

wtf is detroit not a state

@fredley It is, but Connecticut (and Rhode Island, which is also very dense) are both very small.

10:10 PM
@LessPop_MoreFizz I don't know US states that well at all

Okay, now: 99 states of france GO!
:P

I thought california was a city
6

@badp laziness, tiredness, fatigue

@GodEmperorDune baguette

@badp In fairness, distinct US states are substantially more politically and culturally distinct and important than just about any other nations various administrative subdivisions. It's more akin to the way Scotland Wales and England and Northern Ireland form the UK than it is to the various states of, say, Germany.

10:15 PM
dammit, my best so far is 69%

yeah I can't name 25 states

@LessPop_MoreFizz Gotta unite that europe

is there an old york

Q: How does weapon recoil work in detail?

KonstaHow does CSGO weapon recoil work? Which factors affect recoil how? Especially, is accuracy and recoil affected by enemy hits? I am not interested in screenshots of "spay patterns on walls" etc. Rather in links to explanations from developers or reproducible/well documented trials.

@GnomeSlice York is in England I believe?

10:16 PM
@GnomeSlice Is this from that game I Am Bread?

@LessPop_MoreFizz Nope.

@GnomeSlice There is a city of York in Yorkshire, in the north of England.
There is also an old Jersey.
@GnomeSlice Missed opportunity right there.

There is also an old Mexico.

Haha, I guess it was.
Oh Mexico, I didn't try that one

I guess New Mexico brings me up to 16 states.

10:18 PM
wtf is that not a state

New Mexico would not have been a correct answer.

oh right new mexico
yep I just lost

ahahahahahahahah No. Mexico is not a state of the United States of America.

I can't even name all the provinces in canada any more

@GnomeSlice I think I can do that

10:18 PM
@GnomeSlice There's like Quebec and all the others where the contest is instead valid.

Give it a shot

@LessPop_MoreFizz yeah i lost on that

@badp lolololololololol

Newfoundland & Labrador, Nova Scotia, Quebec, Ontario, Seskatchewan, Alberta...

23. I give up.

10:19 PM
Manitoba Northwest Territory
is the yukon a distinct thing politically still?
British Columbia
and I feel like I am missing one but cannot remember it

or, 22/25, 23/26

@Unionhawk Not bad! I got to 23 and failed on Kentucky.

STREETS OF NEW YORK GO. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, ...

I had missed Arizona and South Carolina.
@badp Wall Street, Houston Street, Delancey Street, Smith Street, Lorimer Street, Rivington Street, Mulberry Street, Canal Street...

@LessPop_MoreFizz respectively?

10:22 PM
@badp No. those are just random streets.

Let's see, I missed... Tenessee, Maryland, and Louisiana on the give up attempt

do those still have the standard issue numeric identifiers btw?

I should have gotten maryland
dammit

@badp No.

So many scouts in the Bay Area/National Capitol Area councils

10:23 PM
@badp If you're talking about Manhattan, the numeric grid doesn't actually start at the bottom of the island. It starts at Houston Street. There's a whole ton of stuff south of that though!

oh.
I saw the website that extended the number system worldwide and thought that it was valid across NYC.

None of those streets have numbers or correspond to anything with numbers, and non-numerical New York continues for another mile or two north of that.
I mean, I guess "West Street" becomes the West Side Highway which is technically 12th avenue
Also, the grid doesn't even continue off of Manhattan.
Queens has it's own grid.
and Brooklyn has 3 or 4 grids of it's own at weird angles from each other.

I liked how I saw "Broad St." and thought "Funny, I recalled it was called Broadway."

@badp Two blocks over!

Man those who live in Second Place must be real losers.
GEDDIT

10:29 PM
StackExchange HQ is just off to the right of center on that map as well.
@badp They live in Battery Park City, so probably yes. I mean, they live on top of literal garbage.
(Battery Park City is an artificial chunk of land that was built out of landfill dumped into the Hudson River.)
Battery Park City is a mainly residential 92-acre (37 ha) planned community at the southwestern tip of the island of Manhattan in New York City, New York, United States, more than 1⁄3 of which is parkland. The land in Lower Manhattan upon which it stands was created by land reclamation on the Hudson River using over 3 million cubic yards of soil and rock excavated during the construction of the World Trade Center, the New York City Water Tunnel, and certain other construction projects, as well as from sand dredged from New York Harbor off Staten Island. The neighborhood, which is the site o...

Were there batteries in said landfill?

@Yuuki No, the name comes from Battery Park, immediately adjacent, which was once home to many batteries of artillery.

Holy shit
Warning: if you are offended by the word "fuck", or are at work, then just think about what you would be saying if you watched an avalanche come at you

@LessPop_MoreFizz sounds like the entirety of Netherlands

@badp Walking is actually pretty rad, provided you have people to walk with and it's not hot out.

10:48 PM
I'm drinking a Belhaven Best, and it certainly isn't the best beer I've had.
Even though it has a widget in the can, it tastes flat.

@MBraedley i picked up some appleton's 12 year today

@GodEmperorDune Good man
You know what this beer tastes like? It tastes like an American lager. That is not a compliment.

@MBraedley This just means you haven't had good American lagers.
(And god do I know we export some really bad ones.)

@LessPop_MoreFizz The only thing we get here is Sam Adam's (all other American lagers are domestically produced), so it isn't all bad.

@GnomeSlice You're adorable.

11:00 PM
@MBraedley the Boston Lager isn't bad, it's just nothing special.
And they actually make some pretty good other beers!

huh, TIL LA isn't the capital of California.

@Wipqozn LOL.

I owe @GnomeSlice for that little bit of knowledge

@Wipqozn it is even San Fran

@Wipqozn Also, NYC isn't the capital of New York.

11:02 PM
@Wipqozn rage against canada building ....

@Wipqozn Also Seattle is not the capital of Washington, Miami is not the capital of Florida, and Dallas is not the capital of Texas.

@LessPop_MoreFizz You just blew my mind.

Is your mind blown yet?
St Louis is not the capital of Missouri.
Chicago is not the capital of Illinois.

@LessPop_MoreFizz Austin is the capital of texas, right?

Neither Philadelphia, nor Pittsburgh, are the capital of Pennsylvania.

11:02 PM
USA is not the capital of America

@Wipqozn Yes.

@LessPop_MoreFizz okay, then that one I knew.

For a long time, it was A Thing in the US to designate capital cities on what was perceived as a 'neutral ground' between multiple factions.
Hence, Washington DC is in between the North and the South, and not part of any state.

Also, Cape Breton (which is at one of the ends of the province I live in), got snow last night.
That's what folks in Cape Breton woke up to.

@Wipqozn scary. We dodged a bullet

11:05 PM
@LessPop_MoreFizz Makes sense. Ottawa is the capital of Canada due to it being close to the Quebec-Ontario border.

@Wipqozn I will post pictures of snow within the next 2-3 weeks, if last 2 years are anything to go by

The capital of Missouri is in Jefferson City, halfway between the rival population centers of St. Louis and Kansas City.
Also, Kansas City is not in Kansas.

Also, good thing I haven't gotten my winter tires off

@MBraedley Yup, I was thinking the same thing
I think we're supposed to get snow this week

@LessPop_MoreFizz Isn't there a Kansas City just over the border in Kansas?

11:06 PM
@MBraedley Yeah, but it's basically a suburb.

Also cc @OrigamiRobot, since I know you think us Canadians live in crazy snow land

@Wipqozn I already have an appointment for Friday

@Wipqozn I am so glad I don't live there.

11:55 PM
@fredley when are you going to accept my answer about maiming?
6
A: Is being maimed a bad thing?

GodEmperorDuneMaimed is bad It reduces the character's accuracy and all defensive stats by 15. It leaves the character with a single health and endurance point. More importantly, if a maimed character loses that health point, they die. Since their defenses are crippled and enemies have a penchant for g...
