Letterquest!

xcode is the worst

@fredley What horrible thing happened now?

@Arperum It can't understand spaces in paths

@fredley fun times!

@PrivatePansy I don't get it.

11:14 AM
@fredley %20?

@PrivatePansy ew no
./The\ Bridge/Private\ Pansy
But it doesn't

You mean that doesn't work?

It splits the path at the string, and treats them as separate paths

I'm sure there's some sort of function for URL encoding

Cannot link library -FBridge/Private Cannot link library -FPansy
@PrivatePansy It's not a URL, it's a unix path

11:16 AM
Well, technically speaking it's URI encoding

@PrivatePansy Doesn't work

A cursory search on Google suggests wrapping the path in double quotes

@PrivatePansy Can't do that in this situation
I'm entering the path into an xcode provided GUI

Huh, weird. Where did AOE:III come from?
Ah, it's bundled with AOE:II from the latest HiB

@fredley Yea, that explains it. you are dealing with some XCode magic here.

11:24 AM
APPLE MAGIC WORST MAGIC
5

You're doomed. Even more then you were for using XCode.

I need to go visit you at some point @PrivatePansy

@Blem If there are monkeys in a place, I would advise staying away from that place
Monkeys are horrible

@Blem That looks Photoshoped
I can tell from the pixels

@fredley Watch out for mirrors then.

11:27 AM
or from looking at the original picture of the monkey

@Arperum I am a porkchop

It'd better be relaxing. It's the most expensive building in the entire world.

@PrivatePansy Looks pretty stressful to me!

@PrivatePansy By what metric?

@PrivatePansy have you been there?

11:31 AM
== At the time of completion == == See also == List of tallest buildings in the world List of tallest hotels in the world List of largest buildings in the world History of the tallest buildings in the world List of tallest residential buildings in Dubai List of cities with most skyscrapers == References... ==
@Blem Never to the actual infinite pool at the top. They charge you just to go up and gawk at all the rich people

@PrivatePansy There's a concert hall in Cambridge that is the most expensive building ever, per cubic meter. They re-opened a quarry just to get the stone for it.

I've been trying and failing (hard) to play Cities in Motion 2
The simulation doesn't seem accurate. A 5.6km bus line with 7 stops takes 3 hours to run completely?

is a complete run back and forth?

@fredley Well I guess you can't expect applications to support such advanced features as the space characters in paths. It's only 2014 after all.
@Blem One complete run from depot, through all stations and back to depot

Day 5. The WiFi is still shite. I have a nice view of the sea, though.

11:40 AM
@PrivatePansy Average speed of < 2km/h. I'll walk.

either it is very slow or there is very far to the deport an that part of the trip is not included in the 5.6km

@5pike Views of the sea and fast wifi are mutually exclusive

@fredley I used to have view of the sea and pretty fast wi-fi
At home, that is

@fredley yeah. At least it is enough to get online.

@PrivatePansy Lies, you clearly used to live in the null set

11:42 AM
@fredley They're deploying fiber in Catania

@badp Lies
All internet is lies

That said I can't honestly recommend Catania to anyone who isn't looking for anything more than a chance of a view of the sea and fast wifi
Neaples perhaps?
Neaples would work.
You would just have to deal with the occasional couple years of uncollected garbage.

@Arperum I actually did just that in some cases in Cologne, because I calculated that 1. walking will get me as fast or faster to the destination than waiting for the tram, taking a station, getting out and waiting for the next, then taking two stations while 2. being significantly more healthy both for my body and my mental state.

@badp Only happens once a month?

11:46 AM
@badp next vacation, I'm going further down Italy. Maybe even go to Palermo

@MartinSojka I've done my share of outwalking busses/trams myself.

@5pike Beware: hotspots are rare in Italy. Especially southern Italy.

@badp I noticed.

Where are you currently?
@MartinSojka Happened to me several times with public transportation in this city. Wait 30 minutes for a 10 minute bus ride or take 35 minutes to walk home?

@badp Njivice, Kroatia.

11:49 AM
I've been to Croatia back when there were still customs
It was pretty nice, except for the customs.
I didn't go farther than Pula though.

@badp Customs are still in place. It's not yet part of the shengen zone.()

@5pike What? I thought that changed in 2013.
Customs are terrible.

@badp driving in, they just let me go through

(obligatory boo at @fredley)
@5pike Yeah, but when my parents drove there, the queue for the customs started in Italy
and it was all uphill, with plenty of cars stopped on the side with boiling radiators
You slug your way through the entirety of Slovenia, and when you actually get there they just fucking nod you off.
What's even the point?

I wonder if they'll do a thrurough search, once I drive home, but I don't plan to take something illegal with me anyway

11:53 AM
Apparently border checks are much more thorough if you enter by train.
@5pike Why would they care about your leaving the country?

Zigaretts and stuff. Since it's not shengen, you are only allowed a certain amount.

I don't remember the customs of Slovenia being particularly more careful than the Croatians ones.
The thing that stroke me the most about Croatia is how excited they are about toll highways

@badp they look a bit different now.

There brightly colored toll stations have several warnings before them full of blinkenlights
@5pike Like this?
That's what most of them look like, but that picture doesn't show that they're actually lit by night

@badp yes.

11:58 AM
It's like, when I pay toll, I just pull over, put in the ticket, my card, and go on my merry way. In Croatia, they celebrate the moment

I mostly try to not use the highway and take the scenice route. The streets are pretty good.

@Arperum I really appreciate this. I love terrible puns. They're the best.

@badp nah man, don't over exaggerate

@5pike OVEREXAGGERATING IS MY THING
At any rate we mostly stayed in Parenzo; the beaches there are nice.

Q: Explanation of items/buttons on User Profile Frame

HowlinWulfWhen visiting someones farm, a number of possible buttons and icons appear on their User Profile Frame. I have circled and marked these for easier reference: 1. Exclamation Mark Icon I assume that this is to indicate that there is something on the farm you can help him with? I might be wrong ...

12:02 PM
What's pretty astounding is that almost everyone can speak English and/or German and nobody scowls at you.
Not like in Lignano where they look at you, like you have the plague, when you ask them if they speak English.

o/

WTF Wikipedia

Font settings for wikipedia?

Suerly, they can't be serious.

WHY. WHYYYYY.
IT DOESN'T EVEN HAVE PROPER DIACRITIC SUPPORT.

12:12 PM
Soo ... you're throwing a fit over an option.

YES

(Not to mention that Comic Neue has hardly as many typographical flaws Comic Sans has ... And most of the Comic Sans hate is irrational to begin with.)

Comic Sans has better diacritic support, actually.

I would complain but I don't want to diacritic

Yes, because it had enough time for the rest of the pages to get filled in.

12:15 PM
I mean
OpenDyslexic is a very sensible option to solve a very real problem
and it's got a somewhat broad support at least basic support for international characters
but Comic Neue? Is it supposed to be a "for kids" option?

Simplistic script fonts are usually less of a strain on the eye.
Compared to serif fonts, primarily.

Serif fonts aren't even an option.
You could offer, what do I know, Open Sans?
Any of the fonts that ship on linux distros are likely to be FOSS enough for Wikipedia

Sans-serif fonts also have their problems. They're often too sharp.
All I'm saying is: it's not really worth allcapsing about.

@FEichinger Yeah... nope. I'm not sure what "strain on the eye" is suppose to mean here

I LOVE SERIF FONTS AND I LOVE ALLCAPSING

12:21 PM
@OrigamiRobot SANS SERIF FOR LIFE

@StrixVaria YOU ARE A MONSTER
Also, I hate allcapsing

@OrigamiRobot I found the Greater Rift and legendary gem I got underwhelming.

It's okay guys: Wikipedia has both types of fonts. :P

@StrixVaria :(

I just want the season to start.
I don't want to use this WD anymore but I don't want to start gearing up another non-season character with the season so soon.

12:26 PM
@badp the light makes her head look like it's got blood spurting out of it

I guess this is kind of cute.

@StrixVaria The EU season starts six hours earlier, you could play that? I'll join you on saterday evening (a bit less then 24 hours after the EU season start).

@badp 404!

@badp imgur's 404 page?

Nah, I'll wait for the NA season.

12:29 PM
It is kind of cute

@StrixVaria I can join in there too, then I'll have less of a disadvantage, only ~18 hours. Which is still plenty.

@badp For some reason, the link strips the "h" at the end ...

@badp wat

@fredley You customs loving heathens

@badp Without customs, where would we be?

12:31 PM
I might be able to play for a little bit saturday morning, but that depends on the bands playing friday night (if I don't like the headliner, I'll be home sooner, and might wake up in some kind of timely fashion to have time for a quick game before I leave for family stuff.

I'm going to be out most of Saturday also. I may not sleep much Friday night.

The new MTG font is too small for normal use :(

MONOSPACE FOR LIFE

Monospace best space.

12:36 PM

So I was playing Netrunner with some fine gents yesterday and they pointed me onto a great site for buying cards in Canada, including Halifax. If I order all the cards I need fro there and would save me <$50 compared to getting them local, or ~$40 compared to Canadian Amazon.

ಠ_ಠ

Although not sure what their shipping prices are yet though. Will find that out when I do an order tonight.

ಠ_ಠ at all of your typographical madness

I use Arial Unicode MS most of the time

12:36 PM
@3ventic *Vomits on keyboard*

@PrivatePansy Yes, accentualizing that by exploiting a horrific page of the unicode table makes for such a good point!

Wait, I didn't have my glasses on. Now it's much better.

I need to find some better fonts with great unicode support

@FEichinger I can swear at you in Chinese, and that's thanks to Unicode

@StrixVaria Are there night where you get some proper sleep then, having a newborn child and all?

12:37 PM
@3ventic Inconsolata

@PrivatePansy And I can swear at you in Russian. That's also thanks to Unicode. How does that relate to what I said?

@PrivatePansy Please do, and then one of our mods can ask the feeds bot to translate it.

@Arperum The sleep schedule we've adopted is that I get a "full" night's sleep of 6 hours and wake up between 6 and 7, while my wife gets up in the middle of the night then sleeps in the next morning.
So I get "enough" sleep every night so far.
I do have to take occasional naps during the day, though.
I think we're lucky that our baby sleeps through the night except when hungry.

@fredley I'll give it a shot

@StrixVaria That works. I've been doing some sort of six-hour sleep pattern myself (no kids involved, just being a nightowl and having to get up for work) and I've noticed that it works as long as you include some periods where you can physically crash and take a nap of 12-18 hours every so often (once or maybe twice a month for me, based on how much sleep I was able to get during the weekends)

12:42 PM
The more you guys talk about your children the more I'm confident I never want any.
11

@StrixVaria but aren't they always hungry

No.
They're hungry really frequently, but you would be too if you had a liquid diet.

@StrixVaria I don't need a liquid diet for that...

fair enough

I heard that bulletproof coffee can keep you from feeling hungry for quite some time. Now, who's willing to donate a baby to test that hypothesis?

12:48 PM
@MartinSojka Why is everyone going on about this woo?

Coffee can stop bullets? Somebody should tell the ministry of defense!
So that I can file expenses on the metric ton of coffee I consume everyday for work

@PrivatePansy It's coffee, coconut oil and butter in a mixer, basically. No clue why people talk about it so much, and I never tried it, but as long as it's not toxic ...

1:09 PM
@fredley exactly where you are

user15026
@MartinSojka That doesn't sound appealing at all.

Butter + coffee or tea isn't a bad idea at all, nor does it taste bad. I just never tried it with coconut oil.

butter in coffee...?

Buffalo sauce is hot sauce with butter. When I found that out I was a bit grossed out but it is delicious.

Q: Is there a point playing Diablo III before the season starts?

arnoI plan to start a season char right away (on Friday) and right now I don't know if there's any benefit to playing my non season chars. I'm in Europe.

I'm all for educating young people about gun safety and all, but nine year old?!? That's a bit too young.

@Rapitor why not? It's just milk.

@LessPop_MoreFizz "Oops?"

I honestly don’t know anymore whether to feel sad about incidents like that, or just smirk as the USA slowly slides into a weird dystopian hellhole

@Brant kind of already is.

1:23 PM
@Martin 9 isn't necessarily too young for basic shooting and safety lessons...
But 9 is definitely too young to handle the recoil of an Uzi.

^

The problem is with the muscles and body mass of the children, really. They can train all they like on airsoft gear.

user15026
@MartinSojka I don't have an issue with the education at 9, that's great, but they're a little small for the uzi...

user15026
I'd rather them learn gun safety young.

Q: Soul Calibur 5 weapon guide

nitish winstonI have been an intermittent fan of the soul calibur/edge series and I absolutely loved how we unlocked weapons through individual story lines of specific charectors in Soul Edge. Could someone please explain what is the best possible way to unlock all weapons for mistsurugi, cervantes, siegfreid ...

1:29 PM
So, since this year's version of Eclipse is Luna, will next year's version be Celestia?

I would have a kid start out probably on an air riffle. Definitely not an automatic weapon, and probably not even a semi-automatic. After mastering that, maybe move them up to a .22 calibre riffle.
@Powerlord Don't they work in alphabetical order?

@MBraedley So Mun would a good name?

@Arperum I'm not sure they'll take fictional names

@MBraedley Bah.

@MBraedley well then how about just Moon?

1:33 PM
@LessPop_MoreFizz Poor girl.
Is she risking jail time or is she too young for that?

@KevinvanderVelden Maybe. That is the proper name in English (not Luna or similar).

@badp too young

@badp yeah, she's going to be in therapy for a few decades over the fact that her instructor was a moron. :(

@badp Was a crime committed?

@badp prosecutors have discretion to press charges. No prosecutor in their right mind would do so in this case.

1:35 PM
@MBraedley Accidentally killing somebody is still a crime I'm afraid.

@badp not necessarily

@LessPop_MoreFizz Why was an automatic weapon even used?

They might also consider pressing charges against the firing range

user15026
@OrigamiRobot I kinda wondered the same thing.

@badp but it's important to get the youth into the prison system as soon as possible. get them used to it now and they'll have no problem settling in later in life

1:36 PM
@KevinvanderVelden They'll probably go with Mars, Mercury or Makemake; or Messier is they go for an astronomer's name again.

@OrigamiRob moron teacher.

@MBraedley Originally, it was the moons of Saturn in more or less alphabetical order.

Ok, that might've been a bit too disrespectfull.

or was that Moons of Jupiter

Eeeeh, it's someone who thinks handing uzis to kids is a good idea

1:37 PM
@badp generally, for an involuntary manslaughter charge, you need to prove negligence. A 9 year old is not capable of negligence generally.

@Powerlord Or just celestial objects in the solar system?

It kinda was bound to happen sometime

(In legal terms.)

@LessPop_MoreFizz it could be argued that the negligence was on the part of the person handing an uzi to a 9 your old...

I guess then that the family can seek relief against the firing range for failing to train their employees and employing safety mesaures

1:40 PM
I'm also interested in how the NRA is going to react to this...

@KevinvanderVelden The NRA only knows how to react one way: awfully.

@OrigamiRobot this is true

How many milliPETAs would you measure the NRA reactions at?

Still, are they going to be extra awful and blame the girl or awful in some other way

user15026
@KevinvanderVelden I sure as hell hope not but if it happened I can't say I would be incredibly surprised.

1:43 PM
@badp PETA shows a lot of variance in their awfulness, I don't think miliPETAs are gonna be too precies

@Powerlord Wow, Luigi has become a huge jerk

@KevinvanderVelden the will probably react the same way we are, the guy was poorly trained in gun safety and it showed.

@Rapitor naah, that would imply that gun safety trainers need to be better trained (which could lead to regulations GASP)

The only positive thing about the story I can see is "at least the girl is not hurt physically" - but she'll need therapy for sure.
