Unless you're deep-frying something, you rarely need more than 1 or 2 tsp of oil.

At least, judging from my experience.

Oil is lube. Use enough and things cook just right. Use too much and you have a visit to the doctor.

Disclaimer: I'm pretty awful at cooking. I never adventured beyond buying Italian pasta and Italian bottles of Italian sauce with Italian parmigiano on top.

(It's okay to mix different types of pasta so long as the cooking times are within 1 minute of each other and they're within the same ballpark - no spaghetti and rigatoni, but rigatoni and penne is okay)

as for pasta salad, it's perfectly enough to dice tomatoes mozzarella and oil and just mix. Add a little bit of basil for extra points. Throw it all in the fridge.
