1:00 PM
First month of being at home is still payed by your employer, after that it's payed by the state.

Some people don't get paid time off at all

@OrigamiRobot That would be downright illegal here.

@OrigamiRobot I don't think this is possible if you're salaried, only if you're hourly.

Most of the time you don't get benefits unless you're full time
@StrixVaria Yes, that's what I mean

if you work fulltime, you have right on at least 20 days off each year plus official holidays.

1:01 PM
Yeah, paid time off is not a thing if you're hourly

@StrixVaria I think it's specifically full time. Though, I'm not sure if you can be part-time salaried. Probably not a thing.

@Arperum I only get 15 days off each year, and I work for one of the most generous companies in the country :)

If you work half time, you get 10 days off each year.

@Arperum that is what the fast food workers want - besides 15$ an hr

(it can't be a thing if you're hourly)
by definition

1:02 PM
@Unionhawk Almost all of my jobs prior to this one were hourly and I got PTO
This is the only one that tricked me into salary.

That literally does not make sense
And I do not believe you

@StrixVaria I get that much too. Does that include sick time for you?

@OrigamiRobot I have unlimited sick days.

@StrixVaria full time is a 38h week here, 40 hour weeks are basically 12 extra days off.

@Unionhawk You earn PTO based on hours worked.

1:03 PM
@Unionhawk It makes perfect sense. Most people as an average work day (for example, 8 hours), and paid vacation days just pay them as if they worked that many hours.

@StrixVaria cc @Arperum

@Wipqozn Then that's not hourly.
By definition.

@OrigamiRobot Yup, like it should be.

Maybe my perception is skewed by the fact that regular schedules were never a thing at my previous job

@Unionhawk Yes it is. You're paid for every hour you work. If one day you leave an hour early you don't get paid that hour. IF you stay an extra hour you get paid an extra hour. Vacation days, when you take it, just assume you worked "x hours' that day. I

1:03 PM
@Arperum This is a choice my company made, though; it's not mandated at all.

My company has unpaid sick days. But to be paid, you have to use personal time
It's stupid.

@StrixVaria I know. Over here, there is no choice in it. It is all regulated by law.

@Wipqozn Even more granular, all my jobs have done it all as a per-hour basis
So, if you have 4 hours of PTO
You can either take a half day

@Arperum If that's the way it was over here, people who are sick often would never be employed.

Or tak a whole day but only get paid a hlf day

1:05 PM
@Koviko That's how my company works. You get x-number of hours per year.

Sure, some people abuse the system, but it's getting better lately since they are checking more frequently.

@Wipqozn And maybe my perception is skewed by the fact that at my previous job, if someone didn't show up, or left early, we would be struggling to operate for the rest of the day.

@Arperum Because you live in a country whose government cares about its citizens more than corporations.

@Unionhawk Due to the nature of the job or poor staffing?

@Unionhawk What was your previous job? Provided, of course, you don't mind me asking.

1:05 PM
@StrixVaria Cared. The new government is sort of trying to destroy all of it.

You shouldn't make the system around people who are going to abuse it. People who abuse systems are going to abuse literally any system you make. You should make the system to help the people who need it.

@Wipqozn Ride operator at an amusement park. So we literally needed everyone who was scheduled to function.

@StrixVaria So much this. American politics are full of debates that opt for poor systems because of possible abuse.

@StrixVaria Yup, and you can try to stop/lower the amount of abuse of the system that happens.

@StrixVaria I dream of a day when the USA becomes one of those countries. I feel bad for all you guys.

1:07 PM
@Wipqozn for president

@StrixVaria cough DRM

@Unionhawk ah I see
Also, it's possible we have different definitions of hourly worked.
I'm talking about full time hourly workers, not part time.

Probably
Ah

"Thanks, Wipbama"

@Rapitor Not just talking about government :)

1:07 PM
I worked full time hours, but it was a part time job because I think entertainment industry?
I forget which exception that was

@Koviko ...or because they help poor people

@Unionhawk That sounds like bullshit.

Every time I hear "free handout" with regards to universal healthcare in the USA I just stop listening to whoever said it.

@StrixVaria It's either the "entertainment industry" exception or the "seasonal" exception. It's probably "seasonal" now that I think of it.

@Unionhawk Most likely seasonal.

1:08 PM
I know there's some sort of exception for both of those things.

I used to work 40 hours a week with no benefits at all.
Unless you count overtime eligibility as a benefit

@OrigamiRobot I don't.

Considering I am not eligible for overtime now, I do :P

I don't get overtime pay since I'm salary, but I do get time in lieu, or whatever it's called. That is, for every hour of everytime I do I get an extra hour of vacation time.

And by overtime, I mean at 1.5x pay

1:10 PM
@Wipqozn :(

I've never done overtime before though, and I have doubts I ever will. At this company.

I get over $1m/tick in this zoo incremental. I'm going to say that all the money I shoved into those upgrades were worth it finally.

@OrigamiRobot That's some sweet, delicious OT pay.

Now I get paid one hourly rate for every hour I work. End of story.
But I am salaried.

@StrixVaria Were they though? I mean, you are still playing this game.

1:11 PM
It's a weird situation.

@Unionhawk I'M PROGRESSING

...
You keep telling yourself that, I'll be over here

I can't seed a new animal with only 10 anymore.
The birth rates are just too low.

I should make an incremental game just to make you all suffer.

With 10 kangaroos and 5 upgrades it started at .72%/.27%

1:13 PM
@StrixVaria reset the game so your birthrate is permanently boosted

@Rapitor No I'm going to grind it out forever like @badp in Clicker Heroes.

@Wipqozn make a clone of zoo incremental, except progressing along all your avatars until you finally get Wipqalot back

@Wipqozn See, I've been enlightened. I could literally not care any less about incrementals. (famous last words)
I HAVE TRANSCENDED YOUR PETTY INTERPRETATIONS OF "GAMES"

@Rapitor I would only get a 19% bonus right now anyway. I assume that's a multiplicative bonus, not additive.

OR SOMETHING

1:14 PM
@StrixVaria yeah, I stopped at Kangaroos

@Unionhawk how did you get enlightened? Cattleprod to the face?

Pretty much

@Sconibulus can't stop won't stop

RIP @StrixVaria

RIP @everyoneelse missing out on this kangaroo action

1:15 PM
only incremental I'm still playing is clicker heroes.

I stopped that one too

I closed all mine. Because I have too much else to do.

hey @fredley, is Incraftmental still a thing?

@Sconibulus It's still running while you have it closed, so have you truly stopped?

I started it one day to give an authoritative answer to "this game saves, right?" and am never touching it again.
@JasonBerkan finds and destroys the cookie

1:16 PM
@JasonBerkan I haven't opened it in a couple weeks...
well, maybe only a week and a half or so

@JasonBerkan The only way to win is to never start and laugh at those that did.

@Wipqozn Truth. In a game of making numbers go bigger, how can you win? The universe ain't gonna run out of numbers.

@JasonBerkan No, but the computers could eventually roll over back to 0. I think that would be declared a victory. A sad, sad, victory...

Incremental Game Overflow

@JasonBerkan actually, the heat death of the universe would mean there's practically no information in the universe. Which would also mean no numbers

1:20 PM
@JasonBerkan Hmm... what's the best way to get all of Bridge incrementing...
Oooh, Shadows of Increment! With Nemesae!

@JasonBerkan Graham's Number is winning.

make it about rep

@Sconibulus I... no what why

@Sconibulus I've been too busy to work on it for a while

1:23 PM
@MattЭллен You gain and bounty rep

It's not dead though

To buy kangaroos

Wat.

@Koviko This guy gets it.

Someone needs to make a SO incremental

1:24 PM
It's already been made, it's called SO

@fredley SO is an incremental.

@JasonBerkan It takes so long to get decent return from idle income though
It needs rebalancing

That video is highly relevant.

@fredley reps from voting!
it costs one rep to vote up or down, but you gain rep for each vote that agreeswith your own

My users quite often realize they have no idea what they're talking about.
"Hey, add these new items to the system! But I'm only going to give you super basic information, and keep complaining that it doesn't work until you drag all the information you need out of me."

1:28 PM
@Frank This happens at this company a lot too.
Most of the time the people here have no ide what they actually want, so you need to walk them through it like children.

@Wipqozn In an ideal world, I wouldn't even start adding the items until I get all the information, but these are inherited systems with zero documentation.

Can I reset SO Incremental to get a rep booster?

@Koviko Yeah, SO needs better prestige
Deleting your account needs to create a rep multiplier on your next one.
Or maybe resetting increases your daily repcap? That could work

So today my cothing is not exactly fit for meetings. As in: There is a huge picture of a guy with a freshly decapitated head on it. I've let two clients in already... I didn't know there would be clients today...

1:37 PM
@Arperum I find this amusing.

@Arperum always fun when that happens

So many people are complaining about Sony's PS+ free games. The sense of entitlement in the gaming community is so dumb. :(

@Wipqozn This is one of the worsts shirts I have for meeting clients.

If your company lets you wear that, why should you care if there are clients?

@Arperum Just scrawl a head back on

1:38 PM
@Fluttershy are they not good?

Not this community. Communities like neogaf and IGN are mostly where I'm seeing it.

wait.. isn't november's BoI rebirth?

@Rapitor November's free games are Steamworld Dig, and Rebirth. As well as a couple others that I already forgot.

@fredley The beheaded body is not available, only the beheader with his trophy and sword dripping with blood.

@Arperum send photo

1:39 PM
that seems like good pickings to me and I'm not even a sony pony

SWD is a great game, and Rebirth will likely be awesome too. But people would rather have Knack. For some reason.

@fredley Trying to find a picture on the internet.

@Arperum make picture on the internet

xbox hasnt even announced games with gold for november yet

@fredley I'm not taking a selfie.

1:41 PM
@Arperum get someone else to take
send photo

@fredley All available people are in meeting. Small office.

dear Allen-Bradley, I don't care what your drive actually looks like. Give me a CAD file with your wiring block diagram.
Now I have to manually draw this myself

@Fluttershy I can't comment on neogaf, but IGN has one of the worst communities I've ever seen.
Their comment sections is terrible.

picture made. trying to send it from phone to email so I can post in it chat.
I just took the shirt off for a second.
2
It's not like I'm the first to be half naked in this office. At least noone was watching in my case.

@Arperum wat

1:47 PM
@Arperum Good thing more clients didn't arrive at that moment

@StrixVaria Yea, I've had my boss enter the office in his underwear once...

I've been half naked in the office before.

You guys wear clothes in your offices?

sometimes I change my pants into shorts, or realize my shirt is inside out.

I'm curious as to why this question got closed as unreleased/illegal.

1:48 PM
@fredley Only due to societal constraints.

I've been meaning to keep a spare pair of socks in the office too, but I keep forgetting.
I always have a spare pair with me in winter, since I keep them in my winter jacket.

It's not a great question by any stretch, but I don't see how it falls into illegal territory.

@Wipqozn pics pls

~It's time to put on makeup, it's time to light the lights, it's time to meet the Muppets, on the Muppet Show tonight~

@Frank Explain how to legally play Brawl on Windows.

1:49 PM
@Wipqozn send photo

@StrixVaria Emulation.

How do you get the game?

@Frank Ok I'm going to just step out of this argument before it even begins because I don't have the time or willpower right now.

I'm missing something here, then.

I'm never sending you guys photos of my socks again. Three times was enough.

1:50 PM
I thought our stance on emulation was that we make a good faith assumption that they own the game.

@StrixVaria Oh, I like this plan better

@Frank I thought our stance was that we didn't allow it.

@Wipqozn Bwuh? We've got...I dunno how many questions about emulation.

Don't we even have an emulation tag?

21
Q: What's the official stance on console emulation?

John RudyThe way I see it, many of us enthusiasts are probably familiar with emulation and use emulators to play classic games. (I do, I'll readily admit.) However, it's also fairly likely that many cartridge/disc/tape/etc. rips for said emulators are ... well ... not 100% legal, at least in the U.S., an...

That's kinda old, so if someone finds a more recent one, let me know.

1:53 PM
That's the shirt I'm wearing now. cc @fredley

@Arperum Indeed we do. Which is why I'm confused that question got closed.

@Arperum What are those sweets?

I'll just leave this here:
> Obtaining games through methods not authorized by the developer or publisher is illegal in the United States.

5 mins ago, by Frank
I thought our stance on emulation was that we make a good faith assumption that they own the game.
He's not asking where to get it or anything. Just to get it running better.

Emulators are not illegal.

1:56 PM

@Frank Having the ROM is illegal.

If we're now closing questions because we maybe kinda sorta suspect they pirated the game, that's a dramatic shift from our previous stance, and needs to be clarified.

@OrigamiRobot Is there anything you can do with an emulator that is not illegal then? Because owning games for it is illegal.

Oh, wait. My bad. Smash Bros Brawl is the Wii U one, isn't it?

@Frank Yes. Which one did you think it was?

1:59 PM
@Wipqozn I thought it was the Gamecube or Wii one or something.

well, WiiU/3DS

@Frank no, brawl is the wii one

Is there even an emulator for Wii U?

@Frank I'm not sure how that would make a difference.

@Frank Dolphin can play some Wii U games

2:00 PM
Or is it because the WiiU version isn't out yet?

@Wipqozn Yeah, if the Wii U one wasn't out, then yeah, hammer it closed, and good riddance.

@Arperum Technically everything on the Wii Virtual Console is done via emulation.
You can legally buy those ROMs from Nintendo.

@Rapitor And apparently Brawl is one of them.
But that's sorta my point, here. You can stick a Wii disk into your computer.
And I would think the emulator would be able to read it.
There's no need to stretch for a, "He pirated it! Needs to be closed!"

@fredley - still nothing ...

@Frank Playing straight from a disc requires DRM circumvention, IIRC

2:03 PM
@OrigamiRobot That's...still not piracy.

Dirty Rotten Magic

Who said piracy?
It's still illegal

@OrigamiRobot So we shouldn't let any Dolphin question survive, then.
Because they're all illegal.

If we're going to pick a stance here, let's at least be consistent with it.

2:05 PM
I'm just telling you what I know of the legality here.
I have no business telling you how to handle your site.
> Emulators are also a useful tool in the development process of homebrew demos and the creation of new games for older or discontinued consoles.

I don't think it's as cut and dried as you make it out to be.

Is DRM circumvention even illegal in all jurisdictions we serve?

I don't think it's illegal in the Netherlands... but I don't know.

if not, I think that's a clear-cut case for keeping emulator questions

@5pike :(

2:08 PM
@Sterno! Do you happen to disagree with me on this one?

@fredley Don't worry, doesn't really matter that much.

@Sconibulus SE is still a US owned company.

Now I don't want to, in case I agree with you.
I haven't been paying attention.
Hooray for timeouts making messages appear in the wrong order

It's a mini-drama! You live off this stuff!

Is the question whether or not emulators are illegal, or is that already assumed true?

2:10 PM
@OrigamiRobot That just means we can't help circumvent DRM, once the DRM is circumvented we're perfectly able to assist others with problems in their legal game copy

I'm not sure they are always illegal. And as soon as they aren't always illegal, questions about them seem fine.
But I am not an expert on emulator legality

legality doesn't matter, we can't judge that anyway. Legal issues are handled entirely by SE

@Sterno The question is why getting a Wii game working on an emulator has been closed as illegal.

@MadScientist legality matters when the close reason is illegal content...
I feel this question should be reopened

If the only case in which you could be using an emulator is when you're dealing with a cracked/pirated game, which we don't support, then sure, close it
If there are legit cases, leave it open
I don't know if the assumption that the game has to be cracked/pirated/illegal/whatever is true

2:12 PM
@Sconibulus I'm not a fan of the way this close reason is written. The issue is not legality, but simply that we don't approve of pirating games

Since I don't want to become a legal expert on this, I say we either just leave emulator questions open or else we add something specifically calling out emulator questions to the close reason

I think... we should all go play bumper cars in TF2.

I am OK with banning emulation questions.

(You only think I'm kidding)

2:13 PM
I won't stand in the way if that's what the community wants to do.

@Frank That meta is older than me.

@Sterno Lies

But it looks like it says "Shut up already, emulation questions are fine"

Nothing is older than you

Emulators themselves are not illegal.

2:14 PM
That meta agrees with my stance

@StrixVaria If we're going to do that, we're dramatically shifting our stance, and that really needs to be spelled out.

BBC, why did you take something wonderful and ruin it?

More recent ones require a legitimate BIOS copy to function which is illegal to own unless you own the console.

It's the way people typically obtain ROMs that is illegal

2:15 PM
@OrigamiRobot Using your logic, every usage of emulators is, however.

@Frank There have been a bunch of conversations in chat since that meta with a lot of points brought up and I can't remember all of it.

8 mins ago, by Origami Robot
> Emulators are also a useful tool in the development process of homebrew demos and the creation of new games for older or discontinued consoles.

I do vaguely remember @LessPop_MoreFizz being fairly familiar with the territory.
Since that meta is 4 years old, we should at least look at the topic again to see if we've shifted our stance.

@Unionhawk The argument that was presented to me was that most ROMs can't be obtained legally to begin with.

@OrigamiRobot Personally, I own a Wii, the Hard Drive on it has failed. Am I allowed to have a Wii emulator and play Wii games I own?
(I don't actually have one, but I think doing this is legal)

2:16 PM
Probably, I don't know

@Sconibulus "Maybe", the answer to all legal questions.

@OrigamiRobot And we wouldn't be supporting those usages here, so for us, every usage is illegal, by your logic.

@Sconibulus Depends on whether or not you can legally play from disc where you live.

@Sconibulus ....the Wii has a hard drive?
Incidentally, the WiiU can still play Wii games from disc.

It has some sort of on-board storage

2:17 PM
@MBraedley This

@Unionhawk Yes, it has 512MB of Flash memory iirc.
Everything else was on SD cards.

This is what I assumed

@Powerlord I don't know if it's technically a hard drive, but that is what the problem appears to be, data access

Anteaters get!

@OrigamiRobot That's bullshit. That would mean that the ontopicness of a question is based on where the asker lives.

2:18 PM
There are ways to legally obtain some ROMs, like the Wii Virtual Console, but if you copy that to a PC, that's copyright infringement.

@Arperum This is why legality is a bad criteria for question on-topic-ness.

13 mins ago, by Origami Robot
I'm just telling you what I know of the legality here.
13 mins ago, by Origami Robot
I have no business telling you how to handle your site.

Heh.

@StrixVaria Which is one of the reasons we hammer, "Is X legal?" questions.

@Arperum Personally, I was always of the opinion that this is why anything relating to legality should just be flat off-topic.

2:21 PM
Disregarding legality entirely, are emulator performance issues something we support?
And, incidentally, should we reword the close reason bit to focus more on piracy instead of legality?

@Arperum Also, questions don't just belong to the asker, they belong to everyone.

@Frank Do we support performance issues with other computer games?

@5pike We suck at them, but yeah, we do allow them.

Then I don't see why it should be closed as "piracy"

Just have to look at Minecraft questions.
@5pike That's what I've been trying to figure out, myself.

2:23 PM
Yeah, we pretty much suck at all technical issues questions. Just look at all the Minecraft Crashes questions.

okay fair
but the stare still stands

IMO, performance issues with an emulator are no different to performance issues with another game.

@Unionhawk You just like staring at me.

...

\o/

2:24 PM
Sure, some emulators are illegal, but that's not our concern.
Other games can also be acquired illegally.
Which also can have performance issues.
My stance on this is - No, it should not be closed because of piracy.

Are we doing something illegal if we help someone with a program that may or may not be legal?
Now, look at this:

Q: How to increase speed and flow of movement on dolphin emulator

dangoI am trying to play Super Smash Bros Brawl on the Dolphin emulator but can't play well as the speed of the game is incredibly slow. What can I do to prevent this problem, so that I get faster character animations and movement?

At least it isn't a question about Dora.

2:29 PM
Don't challenge The Bridge
you know how that went
remember doge?

We could close the other question as a dupe, but not because of piracy.

@Unionhawk We will never forget doge
We can never forget doge

I will always forget doge.

@Unionhawk All the better to unpleasantly remind you
@Unionhawk Remember: doge.

The doge2048 question shall be my legacy.

Another point is that you can't really say a performance question is independent of the game because emulators' performance is very often game-specific.

@Unionhawk dat caption

and of course it was proposed for deletion like 4 years ago. Like anything that pleases me that wikipedia finds worthy

Business logic right in the web layer makes baby Jesus cry.

@Rapitor Are we looking at a cat high stepping?

@Rapitor What happens next?!

beats me. saw it, made me chuckle, decided to share

don't think about cat gifs too hard
just appreciate them

you wouldn't

@Sterno Holy crap, those screenshots look bad.

@Unionhawk He would, and I hope he does.

I can't wait till @StrixVaria gets tired of Zoo so he can link more games

2:48 PM
@Wipqozn He totally would.

Or Junction gets finished

@OrigamiRobot yeah... I'm waiting for today's incremental game

the incremental game of the day is star bait

@5pike You're not impressed by the crazy dragon slaying scene?

2:50 PM
And apparently I've lost.

Let me know how this is.
I haven't even tried it, but it looks huge.

Great, so now we're @Strix's beta testers for incremental games, so he can pick out the good ones.
I'M ON TO YOU

I am starting it right now.
But I'm still playing the zoo game.
What is happening to me.

I don't know.

@StrixVaria You are leveling up! your count of active incrementals went up! Number go up!

2:52 PM
@StrixVaria You're being sucked into the incremental abyss.

@StrixVaria At least you are not writing one.

@5pike I started one.

@StrixVaria You started to write one? Ohhhh

I haven't touched it in a week or two.

Pretty soon, @StrixVaria will be consumed by the incremental trend
