Ugh, performance review time. Who wants to fill in mine?

Would you all be happy if I made this my new gravatar?
cc @fredley @Sterno

I actually shouldn't complain, the form is much more concise this year than past years.
@Wipqozn Turtle is not prominent enough

@MBraedley: btw, taking the 102 only takes me about 6 minutes to get to work in the morning.
I go early enough that there isn't enough traffic to have any slow downs.
The only build up would be getting off at joseph howe, but the build up is actually for turning left so I just zoom on by
I still need to find another route thouigh, for times when I'm running late.
I know the 102 will be crazy shortly past 7. I just leave at 6:50 in the morning.

Talking the 127 and 496 still means it takes me 15 minutes to get to my parking spot and another 10 minutes to get to my desk.

@Wipqozn Don't talk to me about commutes today. It took me over half an hour to make it from Dutch Village Road to the west tower of the MacKay this morning.

8:05 PM
@MBraedley Daaaaaaaaaaaamn. You should consider going to work at the crack of dawn like I do.

@Wipqozn From my experience, when a highway is backed up to the point of barely moving, the local roads nearby are even worse (since they're flooded with like-minded people who want to skip the traffic).

Q: What are the hookshot ledges for?

KaiI noticed areas on Legend Mode maps that are only accessible by Hookshot, much earlier than when you actually obtain the Hookshot. For example, there's one in the north of Hyrule Field, the first area of the game (and, if you're just following the story checkpoints, it's quite far out of your way...

this is the coolest thing

@StrixVaria nah, problem is that the highway is one of the only ways into the city, so everyone who doesn't live in the city takes the highway.

Probably should have taken the #MacDonald this morning.

8:06 PM
@StrixVaria The location I'm in Inhave a few routes I can take which will let me avoid a lot of traffic

@GnomeSlice brains

@StrixVaria That is the case here, but for half of @Wipqozn's commute, he's going against traffic.

@MBraedley That is always the best.

Working at 7am rocks.

Live downtown; work in the suburbs.

8:07 PM
@MBraedley Ah yes, I had that going for me for a few years when I first graduated college.

@JasonBerkan Live in the suburbs, work further out in the suburbs

People here commute north (towards NYC or the other cities near it), and I was commuting south.

@MBraedley Live wherever you want; work at home.

The place I work is just barely in the city.
It's great

I'm confused...
Almost none of the things they list as new to Android are actually new to Android

8:10 PM
@SaintWacko Fanboys.

the only thing I see on their that's actually new is 64 bit support, and there haven't been 64 bit chips to be supported until very recently

Phone fanboys make me sad. Just use whatever you like.

Mind you, I too travel against traffic for half my commute, but the section I travel with traffic is through the busiest intersection in the city.

@SaintWacko iOS hipsters are butthurt they use old tech

@JasonBerkan Yes. I would personally never own an iPhone, but if you want one, whatever. I'm not going to be mad at you.

8:12 PM
@StrixVaria Moi aussi.
(but the other way around)

also to the last point. Blackberries are to thank for touchscreen making it mainstream, not iphone. I'm unsure on the first piece of handheld tech to use touch screen though.

Well not really - I would own an Android phone. It's just that at the moment, an iPhone has more pluses for me.

@Rapitor I didn't think Blackberries used touchscreens.
At least not the older models.

@Rapitor pocket PC's used touchscreens in like late 90s (or maybe early 2000)

The BlackBerry Storm is a touchscreen smartphone developed by Research In Motion. A part of the BlackBerry 9500 series of phones, it is RIM's first touchscreen device, and its first without a physical keyboard. It features a touchscreen which reacts physically like a button via SurePress, a Research In Motion patented technology of providing haptic feedback. Its competitors include Apple's iPhone, the Palm Pre, the T-Mobile G1 by HTC and the HTC Touch family. The Storm has received mixed reviews from critics, with some finding the Storm's touchscreen difficult to use or discovering bugs and glitches...
that was a quick google search, not sure if its the one im even thinking of

8:15 PM
@Rapitor Released a year after the iPhone...

@Rapitor That's a 2008 phone and the iPhone predates it

@Rapitor Heh. No, that was Palm

Which is why it annoys me when people call the iPhone the first smartphone

Q: How do I change my kittens' jobs?

Jacob KrallIn the Small Village, I see a Census that tells me the following information for each of my kittens: [:3] NAME NAME - JOB age: AGE SKILL1 (X%) job1 SKILL2 (Y%) job2 But I don't know how to get my kittens into the job they are best at. How are kittens assigned to jobs?

@Chippies Ah, nice

1) my Nexus One had auto-brightness
2) nobody cares about that on a phone
3) doable with an app
4) doable with an app (and much more flexibly)
5) doesn't really matter
6) app
everything else) that was ages ago

can't say it made it mainstream, but it is the first touchscreen phone according to the touchscreen page of wikipedia

@MBraedley Exactly
Well, actually, I care about the second one, but I've been able to do that for a long time

@MBraedley I'm pretty sure my Samsung I5700 had adaptive brightness

8:21 PM
And a lot of the things that can be done with an app are also baked into the various oem android versions

@MBraedley Welcome to the reality distortion field

@SaintWacko also, funny how they say "Welcome to 2008" when only 2 of the items on list are dated as 2008

At least the thing is signed so you know what site you can add to your hosts file as "127.0.0.1"

@Chippies My favorite one was Bluetooth Low Energy
Android got it with 4.3, in Jul 2011
Apple got it with iOS 5 in..... 2011
Um...

@SaintWacko lol

8:26 PM
@SaintWacko October 12, 2011 :)

@badp Wait, seriously?

iOS 5 was the fifth version of the iOS mobile operating system designed by Apple Inc. It was preceded by iOS 4 (final version was 4.3.5) and succeeded by iOS 6, which was released on September 19, 2012. == History == iOS 5 was previewed on June 6, 2011 during WWDC 2011. At the same event, Apple previewed Mac OS X Lion and announced its cloud-based media service, iCloud. For the second time, support for some devices was dropped, specifically the iPhone 3G and the iPod Touch (2nd generation). Supported devices on this release include the iPhone 3GS onwards, the iPod Touch (3rd generation) onwards...

That's something that they got after Android, and they have the gall to try to imply they got it before?
Wow
This image was from a BGR article about the "perfect" response to the Android one
They clearly did no research on it

@SaintWacko well if that's the best they can do

Q: What are Sealed Weapons?

KaiEvery so often, I come across a chest that contains a 'Sealed Weapon' - the on-screen text tells me I'll have to find out what it is later... and then it never seems to be mentioned again. I had assumed at first that it was just a weapon, as the game shows you all the collected weapons at the en...

8:28 PM
@SaintWacko Apple users have to justify the extra cost of buying a new phone every year somehow.

Also, @Wipqozn. I finished mistress of the empire, now I just wanna reread the series

I'm still waiting for an app tray, something similar to intents, and proper widgets (not the notification centre shenanigans Apple is calling widgets).

@MBraedley Didn't you hear, there was an app released that did exactly that
Got nearly a million downloads in the first week
Then it got pulled
Oh, wait, widgets. No, not quite that. Nevermind
Not even an app can give that to iOS

Q: Are unlocks shared across Super Smash Bros for 3DS and Wii U?

AnonymousIf you own Super Smash Bros for both the 3DS and the Wii U, can you sync your unlock progress across the systems? Or must all unlockables and collectibles be obtained individually for each system?

8:44 PM
@Lazers WiiU version isn't out yet in any region iirc

@Powerlord That would explain the lack of a tag for it.
I hadn't realized that.
October 3 is the release date.
Wait, no. That's the 3DS version.

@Wipqozn Me too... I tried to find a higher res one but it just doesn't exist anywhere else
Except for this:
but that's even shittier, somehow

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS (Japanese: 大乱闘スマッシュブラザーズ for Nintendo 3DS, Hepburn: Dairantō Sumasshu Burazāzu fō Nintendō Surī Dī Esu) and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U (大乱闘スマッシュブラザーズ for Wii U, Dairantō Sumasshu Burazāzu fō Wī Yū) are fighting video games developed by Sora Ltd. and Bandai Namco Games and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U video game consoles. The two games respectively represent the fourth and fifth installments in the Super Smash Bros. series of games, which features characters from various Nintendo franchises. The 3DS version was released in Japan on September...
November 21st, for the Wii U, it says.
I don't know if that's correct.

@Frank Last I heard, that was what a specific store had in one of its internal memos or something like that.
Nintendo probably doesn't want to say since they risk cannibalizing the 3DS version's sales.

This only needs one more reopen vote, if anyone is interested:

Q: Numbers Attached to Battletag

KaoeJust curious if anyone knows what determines the number assigned to you. I would assume it's chronological starting with #0001(or #0000) but I can't really say for sure. Is it known how these numbers are generated?

8:58 PM
@Powerlord Now it says Q4 2014.

Smash for WiiU is not out yet, I've been following it religiously

@Batophobia Good to know!

Fun fact: Prior to firing 130 people, Rovio had over 800 employees.

But the asker came back and said, "Maybe Nintendo's said something about it!" which is still off-topic, so that answers that.

For a company that makes nothing but games about flinging birds at things and related merchandise.

@Frank In that case, their response is a classical sign of "didn't do the research"

@Powerlord There's also a Kart-Racing kind of thing

@Powerlord Yeah, we get lots of that. Either way, trolling the net to find gaming related information doesn't play to our skillset. And Arqade's not a news site, just repeating what others have said.

@Frank We also don't answer based on developer comments prior to release, because that can still change by the time the game is out

@Frank Do you ever phrase things in a way that's not obnoxious

9:06 PM
see Gearbox's Alien game

@Batophobia And that's one of the reasons we don't allow it, yep.
@Batophobia Or MS's 180 on what the XBone would do.

@GnomeSlice Bad questions deserve it
Especially when they are reminding me of the game I'm most excited about within the next few months

@Batophobia You care more for Smash Bros than Beyond Earth?

Beyond Earth?
Not a big Civ fan

@Batophobia Burn!
Burn the heretic!

9:08 PM
meh
I preferred Age of Empires 2

But seriously, alright. Whatever you enjoy. That's why there's lots of different types of games.

@Batophobia Not quite the same genre.
Age of Empires series are RTS games, which Civ games are TBS

Yea, but about as close to Civ that I can handle

@Powerlord And next up on the patience scale are 4X.

@Frank I always forget what 4X stands for.

9:10 PM
4X is a genre of strategy-based video and board games in which players control an empire and "eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate". The term was first coined by Alan Emrich in his September 1993 preview of Master of Orion for Computer Gaming World. Since then, others have adopted the term to describe games of similar scope and design. 4X games are noted for their deep, complex gameplay. Emphasis is placed upon economic and technological development, as well as a range of non-military routes to supremacy. Games can take a long time to complete since the amount of micromanagement needed to...

xpand, xplore, x... something
yeah, that
xploit and xterminate

We could probably just as easily refer to them as 4E games.

Sounds like a good option for Daleks

@Frank Well, Civ is a 4X game.
From what I've played of Age of Empires 3, AoE games aren't 4X... in fact, I don't think I've played a 4X RTS
Then again, I kinda suck at RTS games.

@Powerlord They are, but I find they don't have the complexity I expect from 4X games.
So for me, they inhabit an area I call, "Civ games"

9:12 PM
glares at clock Move faster.
sigh I need to stop at the Petrol station on my way home too.

By the by, Endless Legend is a pretty interesting take on the Civ gameplay, set in the Endless universe.

@5pike So, you reduce the "strenght" of "Saurons" army?
(I don't think I can propose an edit of two characters as its too short)

@Powerlord Nope. 6 chars min.

(in case the second one wasn't obvious, it's missing an apostrophe)

Q: Why would I want to disable my observatory?

HjulleAs far as I can tell, all of the effects are positive. Why is there an option for turning the observatories off? Observatory (1) --------------- Increases the chance of the astronomical events by 0.5%, +25% to the science output, +1K to the max science. Turning off observatories will only disabl...

9:18 PM
awards Powerlord with an apostrophy

@Wipqozn Does this job pay well?

It's going home time! (>'-')> <('-'<) ^(' - ')^ <('-'<) (>'-')>

@Powerlord add an HTML comment!!!!

9:41 PM
Portal + Mirror's Edge?
wtf it's free
downloading
The first update of Refunktion, version 1.1, is online which has a bunch of important fixes/improvements: http://www.indiedb.com/games/refunktion/downloads/refunktion-11

Previous Patch Notes for Clicker Heroes indicates that the 30 heroes at level 100 and 30 heroes at level 120 were both temporary rewards...

@James Yep, I didn't get 30 souls when I passed either of those.

@GnomeSlice Yeah me neither, Was reading the patch notes to see the things they are likely to change and saw the entries for the temporary reward bonuses at those levels
Hero souls are HUGE benefits in re-runs
More important than ancients for me right now

@James I heard so too, that's really shitty, because the first 30 souls were a huge help

@Chippies Yeah, 300% more damage? That is HUGE, hehe

9:45 PM
@James really depends on which ancients you get

@Chippies Very few of them are worth 20-30% dps for me right now
And i think my selections suck :D

@James Liberta and Siyalatas are both well worth the small cost at early soul levels

I have Vaagur and mammon V is at level 6 and Mammon is at level 1
and Id rather have my 10% damage

@James Yea, I got 30 free souls + couple free ancient rerolls.

but other than those two, souls are more important early on than ancients

9:47 PM
That helped.

@Arperum Yeah I saw the rerolls only affected previous people
Or I would have rerolled mine to get my souls back :)
I think regilding is a better slot machine :D

regilding is cheap and useful, once you reach the part where you are going over 1000 per hero

@Chippies I have vaagur maxed. And a lvl 3 of the idle gold ancient since very recently.

+25% to +15% idle DPS @Chippies Whats that mean???
Random +% DPS?
@Arperum Thats Mammon :D

@James it begins at +25% per level, then at lv10-19 it's +24%
and so on until 15%

9:49 PM
@James no it isn't.

and remains at 15% per level for infinity

and yeah the +gold is actually one of the better rewards IMHO
I used to think Midas was suck but he is one I always max out now.

either way, gettingi t to level 4 is cheap and doubles your idle dps

... I thought it was...
Let me go check :D

It's silyatas I think.

9:49 PM
@Chippies Ah, so that would in theory answer my AFK question :D
Mammon is +5% gold dropped per level
Siyatas is the AFK DPS

@Arperum libertas is idle gold

@Chippies That one it is then.

I have all the best ancients, lol

I have Mammon and Libertas.
Will probably get Bubos next, or reroll.

I can do a dark ritual every two hours. Once I unlock dark ritual this run, that is.

9:51 PM
@Arperum Yeah that is definitely a handy skill
I want to max out Vaagum... but it costs too many souls :(

Oh! Someone explain to me the ways to get hero souls

@Arperum every 1 hours, if you use the cooldown reduction skill after

Cause it seems you fight a + hero soul at level 100, 120 and 140 maybe?
Or is it just 100 is guarenteed
Then 25% chance at other boss encounters?

@James 100 is guaranteed, then every boss fight has a 25% chance to be primal

9:54 PM
Two ascensions ago I had 18 souls when I ascended at level 145 ish
Last night I got.. 8 I think?
My hero levels were the same

with maxed atman ancient it's 50% chance

Can you fight the primals over and over again @Chippies??
Or are they a once only?

boooooooooooooooooooooooooooored

@James once you defeat a primal it turns into regular boss

@spugsley You have no right to be bored when the interwebz are around!

9:55 PM
otherwise it would be insanely OP and why would you ever ascend? lol
just grind same boss over and over

@Chippies Nono I meant between ascensions

@James oh yeah, of course

If I defeat a primal besides the level 100 one in one ascension for souls can I do it again is what I was wondering

when you ascend, you get the same chances at primals

cause well, last run was distinctly lacking in souls :D

9:56 PM
otherwise you wouldn't be able to get many souls at all, lol

@Chippies I know! I was worried!!! :D

once you can get to around level 200+, primal bosses become your main soul income
although 200 is still low for primals to be great

@James the internets gets boring :(

I think if I can make it to 130 on my second run, I'm doing pretty good.

@spugsley D:

9:57 PM
by level 300 I get between 100 and 150 souls
depending on how lucky I am

@Frank Go for 140 man, honestly.. There seems to be a point where your skills are just going to rekt the bosses despite how slow the rest goes

@Frank you definitely are, level 140 is gonna be a brick wall for few ascensions
because that's where you stop getting new heroes and skills

I am not sure if 50% crit rate + 400% click damage is better than 100% crit rate + 200% click damage yet
but they both chew through things ungodly fast :D

I'm already going to get +6 for ascenion this time.

@James in my experience, 400% click dmg + 50% crit is better
I think the 50% crit is added on top of base 9%

9:58 PM
@Chippies That would seem right to me as well but I like to test :)

either way, you crit a lot with the crit buff on anyway

I've already got every hero and skill, except for Frostleaf.

@Chippies It is according to the stats screen

@spugsley It's ok. I'm here now

But yeah at that level of the game it seems that click damage is what is more important for the bosses.

9:59 PM
@Chippies True. And that one refreshes in like 20 minutes.

@Ktash oh hello :3

@Frank Want some hero progression advice? (Not to say you are not doing it, but its just what I have found out so far :))
