Q: Are good questions necessarily linked to research effort?

AubergineI recently noticed that there's a tooltip for the question upvoting button that begins with "This question shows research effort..." That got me thinking - if I have a question that I can probably find an answer to somewhere on the web, should I make an effort to find the answer on my own, and n...

7:23 PM
Yo @FallenAngelEyes

evening @FallenAngelEyes

hahahahahahahaha pokes Wipqozn hahahahahaha

quiet you
just because you're a mod doesn't mean you can abuse me

Evening guys

how was board game day?

7:25 PM
Good. I didn't do that well because I slept very poorly last night, but I did way better in one of the games than I did the last time, so I'm happy for that

what board games do you play anyways ?

Mostly German-style strategy games

Same here. I'm fairly fond of German style.
Ever play Settlers of Catan?

Lots to do with resource management and stuff
Nay, we don't do Catan. It's a classic, but there are so many other options here.

Actually, have you ever played Power Grid? I've been thinking about picking it up.

7:28 PM
Yep, that's one of the ones we play!
I like it a lot, very well balanced with how you take turns.

Good to hear. I shall most likely pick it up then, either that or add to a Christmas wish list and wait till then.
I've been looking at it for a bit, but I don't have a regular board gaming group at the moment, but I'm trying to get one together again.

My friend who hosts (he's the one who buys all the games) bought a bunch of new citybuilding type boardgames, so we've been checking those out

I see I see
Such as?

like Metropolys, Glen More, La Città, Hansa Teutonica
Glen More is the one I did a lot better in this week. That's combo city-buildingish and resource management.

Any of them stand out compared to the rest?

7:31 PM
It's hard for me to judge, as I haven't played most of those more than once yet, only Glen More

Ah, I see.

But yeah, most of the ones we play involve resource management and/or worker placement
It can be hard to explain to my American friends what is fun about these games

yeah, those are among my favoritees as well.
Have you played Steam before?
@FallenAngelEyes crazy Americans.

"Well, you place your workers on the stone so you can buy buildings" "...And?" "...and you get a good resource chain going for your economy to get victory points?" "...And?" "...uh..."
Americans tend to like more dramatic themes and stuff
I see the appeal in both, I like the dramatic themed "Ameritrash" type stuff (Arkham Horror for example) and also the more German style
Nay, don't think I know Steam

It's enjoyable.
It's based around building rail roads and transporting goods.

7:35 PM
Hm, interesting. Is it more complex than Ticket to Ride? Our group didn't like that one much :/ (though I know it's quite popular in the US)

I've never played Ticket to Ride to be honest.
I would think it's more complex. Youneed to plan your turns out several turns in advance.
And at the same time be able to adapt to other players actions.

user30
Man, this import code is slow

Cool, I'll mention it to my friend, see if it's available here at all :)

The social aspect of board games is what makes them fun.

user30
and I'm using the smallest site available from the SE data dump

7:37 PM
My main problem with playing boardgames is that I'm horrible at strategy

That could be a problem...lol

I'm a miserable chess player for example

I love Chess. I used to play on a daily basis back in high school, although I rarely play anymore.

I just have difficulty planning out an entire strategy, especially with an unfamiliar game, and being able to adjust it well :(
I'm a decent tactician
But most people don't want to win the battle to lose the war :P

Yeah,it can be difficult to learn a game and at the same time make a strategy for it.

7:38 PM
Luckily, I'm not a sore loser
I'm very good at Small World, I think mostly because it's very tactical

Do you have any suggestions for a war themed game, similar to risk? My friends and I like to partake in a game of Risk every now and again, but we have a major gripe with the fact that luck plays such a huge factor in the game.
I have Small World!
Although it's not complex enough for my liking.
It's enjoyable, but due to how simple it is I enjoy it less then my other games.

@Wipqozn Yeah, this is the reason our group does not play Risk.
My friend really doesn't like games where luck is the biggest factor
@Wipqozn How many people have you played it with?

Same here. It removes most strategy.
@FallenAngelEyes I've played it with a varying number. Between 2 and 4, but normally 3.

Ah, I've usually played it with 4-5

That could be part of the reason.

7:42 PM
It gets a lot more challenging then because of space being cramped
so you have to be way more tactical or easily get screwed over

Q: What's the difference between the three New Game options?

fredleyDeus Ex: Human Revolution gives you three options for starting a new game: The wording seems to imply that there's more difference than just tougher enemies (i.e. more/less emphasis on story), is there?

Q: Multiple faction games that allow PvP (RvR)

Larian LeQuellaAs a fan of DAoC, one thing that I really enjoyed is the uneven factions (i.e. more than two). A bi-polar world seems rather predictable, so I always enjoyed the unpredictable ebb and flow of DAoC's RvR. Q: Old isometric Battlemech game fighting aliens with shopping capabilities

lambdorI played this game on DOS as a kid when I browsed through a shareware disk. You play as a small Battlemech/Walker in an isometric 2D level, which is played screen-by-screen. The level is set on a black background and brown tiles are placed labyrinth-like. The enemies were mostly red aliens with s...

@FallenAngelEyes risk is one of the worst examples of luck based gaming. you can lose half your army trying to take over an area defended by 5 units because you keep getting shitty rolls.

@Wipqozn Yeah, it seriously sucks
I'd give Small World another chance though when you have 4+ players. Playing with 5 is way different than playing with 3.

Agricola is another favourite of mine.
@FallenAngelEyes yeah, I'll do that.

Yeah I like Agricola a lot as well
I've finally gotten better at it, haha.

Q: What caused Dark Age of Camelot to lose popularity?

Larian LeQuellaDark Age of Camelot was a game released in 2001. It was a very unique game (MMO) with a rich background, popular following, and even a game changing approach to player versus player combat that made the game incredibly fun to play. It was well on it's way to becoming a popular and sustainable M...

We really kept this open? It seems like it'd be the definition of "not constructive" :S

7:46 PM
I'm so young. Hardly ever played a board game.

You kids and your virtual games.

pokes chat
Stop breaking!

> :58 PM - FallenAngelEyes: I think it's back
@FallenAngelEyes I disagree.
I think it's still down.

Gosh darn I'm funny.
Downright clever even.

8:04 PM
Metroid Trilogy has a hidden set of message in Prime 3, but they're voice messages in Japanese... with no subtitles.

...oops?
at least you have the internet

lol, one of them starts with the Metroid Prime theme being played on a guitar and a guy whistling.

Oh my. The wind is starting pick-up where I am.

Are you guys scheduled to get hit?

Not heavy yet, but it's be consistent wind for awhile now.
yeah we are, tonight.
However it's going to be tropical storm level by the time we get hit.

8:17 PM
gotcha

In Nova Scotia, where I am, we're supposed to be hit with more wind then rain. I know other parts of Canada are set to get quite a bit of rain though.

Oak
Oh man, hurricane... good luck to whoever is out there :\

Does anyone know which chat is the most active (in the whole stackexchange network) ?

I think EL&U
I think they surpassed us in regular activity

user30
Ask Ubuntu surpassed us ages ago

8:20 PM
How does our activity stack up against the rest of the network?

@ThomasMcDonald Ah yeah forgot about them
We're like top 3 I believe

Fancy, thank you. I always thought we were one of the more active chat rooms, but I don't frequent any rooms aside from this so it's difficult for me to judge.

user30
We have actually got more current activity than them though, I believe

user30
AU is at 5.5k messages last week, EL&U 9.7, Gaming 10.5k

Oh, so we might actually be the most active then.
Any reason you want to know, or just curious @TeleShoTTgun?

8:26 PM
I just think that the technology behind the chat is amazing. I really like it, but unfortunately all the chat rooms I've found are completely inactive
Can anyone explain what does "choppertar" mean? One of the chat's description says "Choppertars or GTFO". What's that?

@TeleShoTTgun Don't think it's an SE invention. It's really just a carbon clone of Campfire.
@TeleShoTTgun I'm gonna guess a portmanteau of chopper and avatar.

user30
@TeleShoTTgun It's a reference to their avatars at one point

well The Bridge is definitely active. this weekend has actually been fairly low, but that's not how it usually it.

thanks!

8:43 PM
@Wipqozn Its the most active of all the channels im in, and the most full :D

@SimonSheehan Yeah, we rarely drop below 15 users in here.

its pretty crazy but cool :P
Reinstalling Halo 2..

9:05 PM
@SimonSheehan I was never a fan of the halo series.

@Wipqozn It was the first FPS I really played, but not owing an XBOX means I'm still playing Halo 1 / 2

Q: How do I get past the first turret in Deus Ex Human Revolution?

BrandonI'm trying to get past it without it going hostile so I can get the Foxiest of the Hounds achievement, but I can't get to the door across the hallway (not the one with the concussion mine next to it) without it spotting me. Thanks for the heads up.

No prob
Felt kinda bad. "Game rec!" "Disallowed, sorry." "But it's actually a list question!" "Also disallowed, sorry again. :("
The person's other question has remained open, but it's also only asking for speculation, as far as I can tell, despite the fact they've accepted an answer.

Feeling bad is a good sign. It means that you empathize with them, and it helps you to make stronger points without offending them.

I'm not sure we can definitively answer that

9:33 PM
@Mana Oh. Hm. :(

@Mana Yeah, I always try to be friendly when leaving closing comments. Alienation == bad.

@FallenAngelEyes Maaaaaaan, I hope you nominate again next time there's an election.

If my schedule permits, I shall. :)
If I end up busy with university and/or a job at that point, I may not, because that wouldn't be fair to myself or the site if I have too much on my plate and can't spend enough time here.

@FallenAngelEyes I feel like this is one of those cases where the answer helps to redeem the question in my eyes. I know that people tend to frown on that kind of viewpoint, but I don't really see any reason to worry about it unless we start getting a bunch more questions in the same vein.

@Mana Gotcha. Those are the only 2 questions this user has asked so far, so I just want to make sure we're steering them in the right direction for questions to ask here.

9:40 PM
True...hm, I'm thinking I'll be lenient for now. We'll see what happens; I'm pretty sure they'll get an idea looking around at some other questions.

Yeah, they have good intentions, as far as I can tell. "Assume good faith," as Wikipedia says. Just probably want to keep an eye out.

@FallenAngelEyes Curiously, he's one of the top users on Skeptics

@Fabian Ah, perhaps they have different standards for list questions there? And I imagine questions inviting discussion/speculation (such as the "Why did DAoC lose popularity") would be more welcome as well.

@FallenAngelEyes No, we're probably even more strict in that regard ;-)

Oh. Well then!

9:44 PM
heh
hahahahahaha
that is an awesome room name
props @Wipqozn

@Mana thank you :)

Ok, need to focus on blog post writing now so minimizing chat, later guys

Using this pre-order bonus feels like cheating. :(

9:52 PM
@ArdaXi You mean 2 free Augpacks (using the 10000 credits), a double-barreled shotgun and a silenced sniper rifle feels like cheating?

No.
Seriously, do I look American to you?

Yeah, I dropped the weapons too. I'm doing a ghost pacifist run.

@RebeccaChernoff , off-topic but you may be interested by the fact that the SE Podcast room went frozen. Don't know if there is to worry about deletion? So know you know :P

Ahem.

Hi there!

9:53 PM
You listed the pre-order bonuses for GameStop.

@Arda Oh.
HAHAHAH I DIDN'T PIRATE THE GAME WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT

I'm talking about the AUD you get as loot (or buy) if you pre-ordered from Amazon.
Which Brett did for me.

What does that stand for again?

Basically, it works like a grenade and you can pop it unto any lock or computer to insta-hack it.
Automatic Unlocking Device.

Oh, the automatic unlocking device
you pick those up in some other places
eh, they're alright

9:55 PM
@Mana Only if you pre-ordered from Amazon.

...no they're around in hidden rooms

Only if you pre-ordered from Amazon.

Really?
That's pretty lame.

Yes, really.

Well.

10:02 PM
So, we've pretty much proven @Mana is a pirate.
Let's add that to the list.

Dear @Mana, we regret informing you that you do not qualify for the requirements of this job position. Your online activity at http://chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/35/the-bridge shows you do rarely, if ever, start sentences with a capital letter. We hope you understand the ability to capitalize correctly is paramount to the role of a system administrator, who deals on a daily basis with case-sensitive passwords. Thanks for your interest.
By the way, since you became mod you have been capitalising more and more. Very good!

So, what's with that, anyways? I didn't think I omitted capitalization that much.

Yes you did.

what
hm
that's distressing
Well, whatever. It doesn't matter. I can become pro-capitalization at will.

@Mana Very.
Hmm, I forgot Steam Overlay had a web browser.

@ArdaXi Verily.

10:08 PM
long weekend is long
but it's also over - finally

Impatient?

My throat couldn't stand it any longer
The guys at the international whatever thing of VU organized a terrific weekend
lots of cafes
lots of loud music
lots of people
lots of talking which really was screaming to overcome the loud music

Was the music any good?

and, personally, lots of hiccups.
Met a lot of people though, and that was great. Here there's people from Iran to Botswana to Peru to Singapore (nope, not @YiJiang.)
@Mana It was, meh. Not the point.

Woah woah woah. NOT THE POINT?

10:13 PM
I mean I didn't mind it too much tonight e.g,, then they started putting Barbara Streisand and A Far L'amore Comincia Tu

Excuse me. It is the point.

I'm not as much of a music junkie
So long as the lyrics sounds interesting and it's got beats, I'm normally okay.
Oh look, I've got 16,500 reps precisely.
No more.
Aaaaaaaaaaanyway.
What have I been missing?

10:29 PM
Lots of stuff I see.

Uhmmm
well
What the hell are we going to do about resolving the stuff?

We're going to chill the fuck out maaaan.
I don't feel too strongly about this topic.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY CHILL
HOW IS CHILLING FORMED

Clorophorm and mushrooms.

goes to Yahoo! Answers, slams hands on keyboards to maek sentance

10:32 PM
@Mana We'll tell you when you're older.

Actually I tried doing that and I got, whohcvòladfspotuoijmawaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan
looks like yahoo answers alright! ducks

@badp But...we make fun of Yahoo! Answers all the time.
Why would you need to duck? You shouldn't duck, you should GOOSE!

10:50 PM
lololololololololololololololololololololololol
oh man
thanks for the laugh guys
every time I hear yahoo answers I can't help but burst into laughter

I can't laugh, I'm hiccupping. Been hiccuping for 30 minutes 10 minutes after anything I've tried drinking since yesterday night. Most horrible thing
I'm hiccupping right this second
hating every single hiccup

@Mana Make a meta about them.

and now I'm hiccuping and thirsty, FML

10:59 PM
I'll see if TF2 can do something about my hiccuping

@badp It can't. All hope is lost. Your only choice now is to become a super villain.

If it doesn't stop in 20 minutes I'm going to call the hospital

@badp Drink from the other side of the glass

@FallenAngelEyes I've tried that. It only worked once today

@badp Hm, I dunno then. :( That always works for me.

user30
11:04 PM
stick your fingers in your ears and close your nose with them, then use your little fingers to pick up a glass and drink

user30
this import takes way too long

@badp ooh-ooh ooh-ooh ooh-oh

11 minutes left

Anyone want a solution that's not a folk tale and actually based on science?
Drink hot fluids.

I thought science purported no understood solution to hiccups

11:17 PM
@GraceNote Well, they have varied causes and as such, varied solutions. There is at least medication for its treatment.
Doubt a hospital will do much, though. Medical treatment usually doesn't start unless the attack is chronic.

oh hey. I think it's now oever
A one hour hiccup session is not something I'd wish to my worst enemy

Try 5 weeks.
Anyway.

The badge system exists for two reasons:

to teach new users how Stack Exchange works to encourage activities we view as positive to the community

to encourage activities we view as positive to the community

As the engine grows and evolves, we discover new areas that need badges. In fact, we’ve added a bevy of new badges in the last 6 months or so that we haven’t had time to talk about yet.

Badges are supposed to be a little mysterious; you should view them as minor puzzles with obvious hints. …

I still think Archaeologist is a very, very bad badge.

11:31 PM
It has the potential to be good, but potential never was always exercised

A good example of that would be on Super User - Tom Wijsman fixed all posts with 400k-100k views, and it did quite a lot

Oh. There was a passcode lying around to open the door.
I just blew it up. Meh, I like my approach better.
