@JPhi1618 no, I meant it just happened...16 years ago, and agin 14 years ago, and again 10 years ago...ooops
not just happened recently, but 'just happened' without much planning...

Ha, oh ok.
Well pretend it's 16 years ago... Congrats!!

@RoryAlsop - Whether it "just happened" or was planned, I'm sure you are an awesome parent.

@JPhi1618 LOL! Thanks
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 and thanks - we'll see when they're all grown up and have families of their own, but so far they're turning out well

Yo, @LynnCrumbling.

hiya!

4:10 PM
I haven't seen you in a while.

Yeah, I was in SF all last week

Oh, well there you go.

Samsung Developer Conference

Oh, the great SDC.

Trying to figure out how I just got 5 upvotes on an old answer...
oh, it's because it's featured now

4:12 PM
@LynnCrumbling - Probably upvotes because I set the bounty on a question you answered.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 I've actually garnered as much in upvotes as what you awarded in bounty!
Double-win :)

So, not only will you be getting the 50 points I'll award you this evening, you're getting upvotes on a great answer, which deserves more ... so awesome!
@LynnCrumbling - Awesome! I'm here to help :D

@JPhi1618 congrats on the new job

I love it when I put something up for a bounty, then someone else answers the question ... I wonder if they actually read what I put in the bounty, lol.
@Zaid - Absolutely! @JPhi1618
@LynnCrumbling - You got a badge out of it as well, then.

@Zaid Thanks. I'll miss hanging out in here, but as my rep shows, the current job was kind of a dead end, lol.

4:16 PM
@JPhi1618 - You'll be around ... ask me how I know.
@JPhi1618 I don't spend much time on here at work anymore for much the same reason ... but I seem to find my way here when I'm not at work.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Oh, I'll be around for sure. The new place is on top of a train station, so I think I can take the light rail and be faster than driving.
That will give me 30 minutes in the morning and afternoon to kill.

I didn't realize Dallas has light rail. I spent some time in Garland once ... about three weeks or so.
I really like DFW area.
When do you start?
Well, I need to go get lunch, so will be back later.
@JPhi1618 - I like to see good things happen to good people. Congrats again.

Hey all

Well, if I didn't say hi to @DucatiKiller before I left, I'd be remiss.

@DucatiKiller Hola!

4:21 PM
What's going on brother?

Living the dream, how bout you?

Bad Dobbie!
I'm good. Listening to HP in the background, lol.

of course!

Anyway ... on my way to get some Cinco de Mayo nachos for me and the spousal unit.
:D

Enjoy

4:30 PM
Pro office tip: when somebody has headphones in, banging away at keyboard and doesn't respond to normal conversational tones, don't tap the on the shoulder unless your hair is on fire or you're about to die.

You mean you don't go around just touching people randomly?

You know what? No. That never ever occurs to me.
Even better, never ever ask that person that you just annoyed, "are you busy?"
I have it on good authority that my normal office face looks like the Devil. I can't imagine what the Tapper sees.
grump grump get off my lawn!
Mentally allocating my off hours: I might be able to look into my boost leak some time on Sunday. Strange cable modem downstream power levels have pushed it down in priority.

@BobCross I tapped someone on the shoulder the other day who was just about like that (no head phones in, but banging away at the keyboard) ... he jumped so far out of his skin it scared me!

My move for people like that that I really have to bother is STOMP STOMP STOMP as I come down the hall. Usually breaks the trance long before I need to do anything else. Low frequency acoustics are your friend!

Like elephants in the wild.

4:43 PM
Here's a good office etiquette question: is it okay to ask a man how long he's been pregnant if he's standing in the hall with his arms crossed over his baby bump? Additional context: he's in the frickin fracking way.
Again, grump

Oh, completely appropriate ... especially if they know you have a Black Belt in something other than Lean Six Sigma.

That is a joke that I've used before. "Would you like to borrow one of mine?" It's a conversation stopper.

haha, nice

The good sports are "yeah I know, it's silly but this is actually important." Okay, good sport, I'm listening. We have one of those going on right now. Only faux pas at the beginning was forgetting to tell me that I was the senior technical person on the chart without giving me a hint before the meeting. Okay, I guess I'm giving the briefing again.... ,-)

But, Bob, if you weren't giving the briefing, you wouldn't be The Man ... would you?

4:50 PM
@BobCross Sounds like a government job

The new hires yesterday took the wind out of my sails nicely yesterday: "you don't have to introduce yourself, Bob. We all know you by your silly polar bear hair. We can see you from a long ways off." "Shut up you guys!"

@DucatiKiller - Yah think?
@BobCross - Noice.

Yeah that was a good one.

I'm sure behind the scenes, those "old timers" who have worked with you for a while say to the new guys, "You see the guy over there with the white polar bear hair ... uh ... yah ... don't bug him."
Unless they are feeling froggy and want to "break in the new guys" the right way, haha.
Then they'd say something like: "Yah, you see the guy with the white hair over there? He really likes it when you ask him a bunch of questions"
Sometimes I hate this page markup.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 actually, no. The new hires are great. Smart and full of fizz. I'm in charge of their mentoring. What that actually means is an open question.... ;-)

4:55 PM
@BobCross - Actually, that's a pretty awesome position to be in, from my perspective.

@BobCross The good news for the world is that they won't walk around an office in the future randomly touching people.

I like it when the newbies are fully of piss-n-vinegar.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 back in my day we didnt have swivel sockets.. lol

Was just advising a woman yesterday where she should take her required Steel Toed Boot training. The nurses office. Go figure.

@BobCross You can feel good about that everyday when your driving home.
Nice, because nurses know about steel toed boots. Did I say this sounds like a government job

4:58 PM
Super important on a ship. "Wow! Where did that razor cut come from?! That would have taken my toes right off!"

Can I get one vote on this answer if someone feels it's worthy. I'd like it to drop off of the unanswered list.

I have one of those on my boots. Crazy.

I have a friend that has one of those lines on his face. He didn't have a steel toed boot on to protect it.

@DucatiKiller post it.

whoops, got lost...shiney keys

@JPhi1618 New job?

5:03 PM
@DucatiKiller - Done.

Uh oh, he gave you a downvote.

Uh oh, he gave you a downvote. Is that what you were looking for?

I'll take anything at this point :-)
@JoErNanO pressure plate looks a little banged up.

hello

5:10 PM
What Ducati isn't telling everyone is that he's vying to be the second awardee of the coveted gold tag badge ...
@amphibient - Hola@!

hola, como esta ?

Nes pas
Not a chance, IOW! LOL!

parla usted ingles ?
LOL

Not at all.

anyway -- Paulster2 how do i positively verify that it is the PCV before installing a catch can ?

5:11 PM
A little French, a little German, and very little Spanish ... I would say probably only a little bit more English, lol.

and another question: are all catch cans on the market vehicle agnostic, IOW don't need one specific to my truck ?

@amphibient - You can check to see if there is oil in the hose going through the PCV ...
@amphibient - correct

the hose that goes into the air intake >
?
the PCV hose that goes into the intake

@amphibient - I'm taking a SWAG with your truck, but it should have a hose which gives the PCV vacuum.
Also remember when I said you could build one yourself out of some PVC pipe for under $10? That's a real good choice if you are just going to be testing.

that's what i'm talking about
how do i build one and which size hose should i use (3/8" ?)

5:15 PM
I just foudn this ... haven't watched it yet.

@DucatiKiller, yup.
Starting in one week or three weeks depening on if the current job wants me to work after my notice.

This guy is an idiot ... so, I'll try to find something better.

@JPhi1618 congratulations. I imagine this is a step up in all the right areas.

@amphibient - ^^ this one should give you a good idea of what I'm talking about.

@DucatiKiller lateral on actual cash, but I won't be a contractor any more so I get vacation, holidays, and other normal benifits.

5:19 PM
Hooray! Another computer!

@amphibient Only, you can use PVC to build it out of which you can get at Lowe's

@JPhi1618 That's excellent. Much better world. Congrats again. Security is good.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2, using PVC for a PCV is too confusing.

@JPhi1618 - Benefits are awesome. I've worked as an Independent Contractor before. Sucks not having the benefits unless there is a whole mess of money to make up for it. (which in my case there was).

@DucatiKiller, indeed. It's a pair programming house, so I'll be with someone all the time. No time for goofing off :)

5:21 PM
@JPhi1618 - How exactly does pair programming work and what are the objectives ... to keep you honest?

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2, I was getting good money, but it's still hard to say, "Do I really want to take this day off instead of making $xxx...?"

@JPhi1618 - I felt much the same way.
Especially when we could easily be making bank through OT.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2, The concept is collaboration and on the fly code review. After the fact code reviews are ok, but the person doing the review may or may not know the entire context.
The idea is that two people can bounce ideas off of eachother and proofread at the same time.

@JPhi1618 - Says anyone having to inherit code.

@JPhi1618 That pairing...it actually does bring individual productivity up. Bummer.

5:22 PM
@DucatiKiller - ROFL!

It also makes it super-easy to onboard/train people since you already have a more experience person next to you at all times.

@JPhi1618 - I can see the value in it.

@DucatiKiller Yea, I will have lunch to check the site... And I might also start commuting on light rail, so there's that time as well.

@JPhi1618 Indeed. You get up to speed considerably quicker and get some of the undocumented institutional knowledge jammed up into you more rapidly.

Plus it probably helps when people get stuck in a rut ... there is always a second perspective there.

5:24 PM
@JPhi1618 mass transit. Wish I could use it more. that's a bonus.

@DucatiKiller - That sounds painful.

I'm not sure about the personal space aspect. There's really no privacy, but I think I can deal with it.
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 lol.

and with the bluetooth keyboard you could probably flip back and forth once you've settled in.

The people at the new company tend to stay a long time. Very low turnover.
@DucatiKiller, I might have an iPad or small laptop to look stuff up on SO and the like.
I'm a C++ guy, but they are mostly Java. There will be a lot of learning for sure.

5:26 PM
@JPhi1618 You and @BobCross can do cleaner modem hand shakes.

Paulster2 -- can you explain how my head gasket service would have introduced a PCV problem ?
and also, how i would fix it if i could confirm that it is indeed a PCV problem ?

The catch can is the fix and I don't have a clue how you could have introduced it.
It's frustrating, for sure.

OK, thanks

And it isn't necessarily a PCV issue, that's just where it starts showing itself.

@amphibient You have identified that it IS the head gasket that is bad?

5:28 PM
Where is your PCV located (physically)?

but with the catch can, i would still be losing oil, it would just not be going into the combustion chambers, correct ?

Did you do your leakdown test?

@DucatiKiller -- i have NOT identified that
i have not yet

@amphibient Gotcha

hopefully this evening
do i need to spin the crankshaft for that ?
for the leakdown test ?

5:30 PM
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 The catch can is a possibility, right? That there might be oil coming out but identifying if there is would be a troubleshooting breadcrumb for him.
@amphibient No

because if i do it will take longer because i would need to take the fan off
ok

static test

i mean, does each cylinder need to be in TDC when i'm pumping air into it ?
if it does, i need to spin the crankshaft with a ratchet

@amphibient - Where is your PCV located physically?

i don't know

5:31 PM
what year is your Tacoma again?

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 I thought we decided it was at Lowes.

@amphibient I owned that era of Tacoma

@JPhi1618 - Nice

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Just tryin to add confusion. Don't mind me.

5:34 PM
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 It's on the passenger side valve cover
@JPhi1618 That's my job, back off.
There will be no confusion unless I am creating it.

i have to go now -- if you have any other ideas, i would appreciate it if you made comments on my latest question -- THANKS

@DucatiKiller New jobs, I thought you heard?

@JPhi1618 I made that jump long ago. You'll be fine.

@JPhi1618 Your trying to steal my confusion thunder.
@amphibient Take care

@BobCross I've wanted to add something to my resume other than C++ and C#, so I'm happy about it.

5:35 PM
@amphibient - Here to help, brother.

@BobCross From what I know about it, there shouldn't be a big deal other than getting to know the standard APIs/libraries/etc.

@amphibient Have you checked your spark plugs for black buildup?

I think he had to go.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 What gave it away?

@JPhi1618 Java 8 is all unicorns and rainbows. The first time you realize that you don't need to use old style for loops is like magic.

5:37 PM
Ha, ok. Does it have a foreach type of construct?

@JPhi1618 - Hey, didn't @DucatiKiller give you enough of a hint about confusion??

@JPhi1618 yes and even better. The new Streams knock for loops over and take their lunch.
And then you add a .parallel() to your stream and suddenly your unicorns can also fly. Magic!

@BobCross Cool, I'm not sure what flavor of Java is being used. There is some quite old code, but there's newer as well.
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 I couldn't really get the gist of what he was saying. He was being <takes of glasses>... confusing.

@JPhi1618 - Brighten up, buddy boy, or you'll find yourself on the unemployment line ...
... well, not the "employment" unemployment line ... but ... oh ... you know what I mean!!!
:o)

Clear as mud :)

5:42 PM
My interpretation of @BobCross to @JPhi1618 "Java drinks M$'s milkshake, punches it in the face and does a river dance."

@JPhi1618 - Mud mixed with straw, no less.

Mud mixed with straw = adobe house. You just have to connect the dots

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Exactly

I bet they have to ice their knees after a performance.

5:43 PM
Ha, speaking of MS... I was texing my wife saying that the new office has big "windows" and a great view, and my iPhone auto corrected it to a capital-W "Windows"...
Thanks for the competitive product placement, Siri...

ROFL!
It just might be you did it unconsciously

@DucatiKiller I other words, Java's Milkshake brings all the boys to the yard? Wait, I guess that would be a Frapachino?

@JPhi1618 Yes. Then it beats them all up and takes their lunch, according to @BobCross
@JPhi1618 It pwns them, if you will

@DucatiKiller - No, that was actually @BobCross who beat them up.
They were asking about his "white polar bear hair" and he took it personally.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 jackbooted government worker scientist thugs beating up ALL the other kids with slide rules.

5:50 PM
Noice!
That would be a great headline.

It probably already is.

BWAHAHAHAHA!
(That was the best evil Bob laugh I could pose over the internet.)

I'm on a segue kick today... Speaking of Polar Bears... We were behind an Icee truck at a stop light - their mascot is a polar bear wearing a hoodie and sweat pants...

The life of a thug polar bear ... noice.

My 4yo says, "Why does that polar bear have a jacket on? He doesn't need that! He has a fur coat!"
"Silly bear! Why he do that?!"

5:53 PM
the slow moving terrorist response team

I actually understand the fur on a polar bear work so well, they can overheat.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 @BobCross, is that true?
@DucatiKiller That is epic. Where is that from?

@DucatiKiller - BWAHAHAHAHAHA! ROFLMBO ... literally.

@JPhi1618 which silly nonsense are you asking about specifically?

@JPhi1618 some ridiculous seque site that extols the virtues of seque

5:55 PM
@BobCross Oh, there was a polar bear fur question that someone attributed to your hair.

Btw, I'm AOK with Microsoft. Windows ten is a delight. Especially with Java sauce.
Oh yeah, it's bad when it's long. Stands straight out from my head. Albert Einstein and all that.

@JPhi1618 4 year olds have a penchant to be be smarter than us IMO
@JPhi1618 Not as contaminated as we are.

No way. You can tie a four year olds shoes together and they'll have no idea what to do at all. Way too easy!

@BobCross Truth... It is sort of easy if you're evil.

"Maybe it's time you learned how to tie your own shoes rather than asking daddy to do it all the time!" many laughs from little boys on floor with shoes tied together

5:59 PM
But a four year old can look at a guy and say, "He's ugly and scary" really loud. We can't get away with their truthiness.
@BobCross I like your training methodology. Suffer until you can do it better. LMAO

"How can an oil plug just fall out after three months and 3,000 miles?" Talk about a militant oil change interval reminder...

It also makes it harder for them to escape.
My boys had to think fast. "Time for bed. I'm going to count to one. Any boys still downstairs will get the tickling!" Boys already in bed by the end of the last sentence.
It got to where I could only count to zero and still they beat me up the stairs!

Yes, the threat of such torture motivates the young ones. Their short legs allow them to accelerate a bit faster than us. I think there's math that will back that up.

The best was when they had to do the hopping skid turn to make it around the corners on the wooden floor. Insufficient traction!

@JPhi1618 Oil changes by Daesh....
It's hard to find balance with those corner turns. With socks, hit the wall. Without socks, high side and too much friction. There's no grey area. Quite a conundrum.

6:06 PM
By the end, they were almost wall-running. :-)
@JPhi1618 Optional is another wonderful part of Java 8. OMG. So good. No more null pointers for me!

@BobCross That sounds fun. I've always thought the null-pointer-short-circuit thing should have been more popular early on in the world of pointers.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 The GT40's beat the Vette's at Laguna Seca. The same teams will be competing at Le Mans.

I saw something about that.
Ford has stepped up their game, eh?

Q: Why are there so many relays used in a car, instead of transistors?

Al KeppRecently I did some work on my car electric circuits. I see many relays are used in car circuits. These relays are used for simple switching, and I wonder why these circuits are based on relays and not on transistors or other electronic components usable for switching purposes. I thought that tra...

The true answer?
Relays are used because they handle a higher load than what a transistor can handle ... by a whole bunch.

6:21 PM
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 I was going to say....

I doubt you could build a transistor robust enough to handle 50+ Amps

It would be sizeable. The size of a relay? :-)

I mean, don't transistors only handle milliamps?
@BobCross - If not bigger?

I think at that point, you point at the relay and say "transistor" with air quotes and be done.

Exactly ... but what do I know ... I'm not an electronics engineer ... but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

6:28 PM
Okay tonight's plan is now fix the cable modem and rebuild Mom's computer from scratch. I wonder what boring Dads do with all their free time. Watch the news?

You mean you can't do both?
What's wrong with you Man?!?

Oh, I can. I just can't also teach a taekwondo class. Can't be three places at once. Only two....

You'll have to teach me that trick some day.

@BobCross I'm even more scared of you now....lol as if your job and education weren't enought.

I used to use a LOT of caffeine. When your vibration frequency matches that of the universe's local reference frame, you become a superposition problem. Nobody can measure your momentum and position at the same time. Solved!
@Bob'ssockpuppet pshaw, those aren't the reasons why you should be scared of me.... Wait, that came out wrong.... ;-)

6:33 PM
@BobCross In other news I didn't realize that redaction requires another mod to approve, makes since just didn't know it.

@BobCross - Isn't that what a Heisenberg compensator is for?
@Bob'ssockpuppet - Redaction?

Sadly those are really hard to find. It's right there in the name.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Removing name and phone number from a post someone thought was a good idea....

I'm surprised that just isn't an edit? I believe I've done that several times before ... but ... okay.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 You can edit it but it's still there, and still can be hit by a bot
redaction removes it out of the database
sort of what Jeff did with the boat programming question, but he did it to the whole post
Since SE wants to be completely transparent it takes two mods to actually and totally delete something.
Or at least I believe that's their reasoning

6:41 PM
@Bob'ssockpuppet - Now that makes a ton more sense.
I get the whole picture now.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 I guess you should flag it instead of just editing the info out

Or boht.
both

Unless you have a redact button since you are a trusted user

@Bob'ssockpuppet - BWAHAHAHAHAHA! No such luck, lol. (as far as I know ... I've never actually looked for one.)
There is the flag for moderator intervention ... which in effect is exactly that.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Look here
Do you see a redact option

6:46 PM
Nosir
@Bob'ssockpuppet If you redacted in that situation, I take it you'd completely remove one of the edit steps?

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 No it edit's the record without leaving a trace. As if it was never in the original post. Hence the need for a second mod

That's all I see.
@Bob'ssockpuppet - It makes sense.

7:07 PM
To any smart metallurgists we may have at The Pitstop ... is there any issue with running stainless bolts into aluminum threads?
Long or short term.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2, page 2 at the top: fastenal.com/content/feds/pdf/Article%20-%20Corrosion.pdf
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Disclaimer: IANAM...

IANAM? I ain't no amazing metallurgist?

Something like that ;)

From the second link: "Stainless steel fasteners in aluminium plates or sheets are normally considered safe"
Which is what I was wondering.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Ok cool...

7:16 PM
I think I'll still be putting anti-seize compound on the fasteners when I do install them in the intake manifold of my IROC-Z.

What is the normal bolt/head material?
I mean aluminum heads and intakes are common right? What are the bolts normally made out of?

@JPhi1618 - regular steel
or whatever bolts are made out of, lol.
Not stainless.

Is corrosion a big issue, normally?

Not at all ... just me being anal.
I'm more worried about how the aluminum might "stick" or "weld" itself to the stainless. Then if someone took the fastener out, it would strip the threads out with it.

Oh, ok. I honestly didn't know.

7:22 PM
No worries. TYVM for the links ... helped immensely

@JPhi1618 Neophytes! Soon we'll all just be hooked up to hoses with life simulations projected into our brains!
We'll look back on this conversation with remorse that we didn't do our part to destroy SE and preventing it's AI from taking over the world.

Really? Infinite rep? Lawnmower man dude!

I think it's funny that NO ONE has upvoted that question.

Ever read Neuromancer?
People jacking into the matrix (different matrix)...

I have not read it but it looks interesting. Checking the wikipedia entry on it.

Intrusion Countermeasures Electronics (ICE) is a term used in cyberpunk literature to refer to security programs which protect computerized data from being accessed by hackers. == Origin of term == The term was popularized by William Gibson in his short story "Burning Chrome", which also introduced the term cyberspace, and his subsequent novel Neuromancer. According to the Jargon File, as well as Gibson's own acknowledgements, the term ICE was originally coined by Tom Maddox. == Description of ICE == When viewed in a cyberspace virtual reality environment, these constructs are often represented...

Nice
Maybe rather than waiting for graduation we can all use some CSS hacks to make it look like we graduated.
