@Loong can you quickly confirm that IUPAC defines organic compounds as all those that contain a C-H bond?

4:29 PM
@Jan I cannot find any official IUPAC definition that stipulates that organic compounds have to contain C–H bonds.
The Blue Book definition is elegant but unclear: For nomenclature purposes, a structure containing at least one carbon atom that can be named using the principles of organic nomenclature is considered to be an organic compound.

Hm, damnit, I read that definition somewhere but can't remember where since it was a loong time ago™ ^^'

An organic compound is any member of a large class of gaseous, liquid, or solid chemical compounds whose molecules contain carbon. For historical reasons discussed below, a few types of carbon-containing compounds, such as carbides, carbonates, simple oxides of carbon (such as CO and CO2), and cyanides are considered inorganic. The distinction between organic and inorganic carbon compounds, while "useful in organizing the vast subject of chemistry... is somewhat arbitrary". Organic chemistry is the science concerned with all aspects of organic compounds. Organic synthesis is the methodology of...
> There is no single "official" definition of an organic compound. Some textbooks define an organic compound as one that contains one or more C-H bonds. Others include C-C bonds in the definition. Others state that if a molecule contains carbon―it is organic.[citation needed]

Hey all,
check out my question:

Q: Can chemicals be identified by their molar mass?

TanMathWouldn't it be possible to identify a chemical by measuring its molar mass? How much accuracy does the measured molar mass need to be to guess what chemical it could be?

Yep, molar mass can be useful but it's most basic data, usually not sufficient

BTW, when is the next TRE and when will we have episode 2?

Probably this friday, but not sure.
