You can probably figure things out by the explosions. If it explodes you did something wrong, try to not do that again.

@Arperum the reason I was avoiding it is that the latest incarnation had lots of multi-step crafting recipes, though it wasn't as bad as I remembered on the Infinity server we briefly had

Well that was probably because everything else was also really bad

IC2 wasn't much modified in terms of recipes

lava is a non-issue now with his pump and bloodmagic's lava ritual

that ritual... I used it to power my base once, it starts to use a lot of LP when it does that

I'm going for ethanol on my current singleplayer

In a compression dynamo, you can produce lots of power

silverwood leaves are so OP for ethanol crystals

if it gets overheated remove the fuel rods and keep just the vents in there (if it still uses that)

I've heard a lot of things about silverwood leaves... just never that they're OP

As soon as you remove the redstone signal it doesn't produce heat anymore

The vents cool down when it's not receiving a signal so you want to make it go on/off
