What's going on with these 2 bounties? It seems highly unusual to me to see 2 Q's w/ a -16 and a -4.
-16
Q: Which amongst the given option is TRUE about login shell?

user73214Which amongst the given option is TRUE about the login shell? The login shell varies every time the user logs in. The kernel decides on the availability of the shell during login. The login shell is fixed for all the users in a particular system. It cannot be configured. The login shell can b...

Q: after installing centos 7 Windows7 is not working

Dijo DavisI installed Centos 7 using a live cd. But after that Windows is not booting. It directly going to the Centos only.

@slm rage quit?

slm
dunno, seems extremely strange to me to see somone dump 700 pts on those 2 Q's.

1:44 AM
@slm Strange.
@slm Agreed.
Ask the bounty awarder?

slm
He seem to feel these were great Q's for the site and didn't understand why they were so DV'd.

3 hours later…
4:45 AM
Not sure, can we vote to close the bounty awarded question to prevent unwanted attraction?

slm
5:03 AM
based on the bounty comment I can only assume that they're a joke and that @Braiam's right:
> A great question that should draw more attention! Just a shame that the sudo dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/sda bs=1M was not given earlier!

3 hours later…
8:11 AM
hello people! anyone around?

@clabacchio What's up?
Visiting from EE? I didn't even know there was a EE SE.

8:54 AM
@FaheemMitha yeah there is :) not one of the biggest, but it works well so far :0
:)
I had a small question, bash-related

2 hours later…
11:01 AM
@clabacchio You don't want to ask it on the site?
If it is too trivial, just ask it here.

11:21 AM
@FaheemMitha Yeah I guess it's quite trivial

@clabacchio Ok, ask here then.

@FaheemMitha I'm just trying to write a script that replace this sequence of commands
 cd Components/ZPSAPL/Build	#All the coming commands should be run from this path
 make clean
 cp ../Source/version.hb ../Source/version.h
 make

though i will most likely not be of many use. my shell knowledge is rudimentary

well it shouldn't be that complicated
I never scripted in bash
the thing is, I know this should be done at the makefile level
but I just needed a quick fix

@clabacchio oh, just write a file with those commands in there, one per line. to a first approximation, that's all you need

11:28 AM
@FaheemMitha I also thought so

if you want to execute it directly, you can add

but I get the error on the make command

#!/bin/sh at the top, and make it executable
@clabacchio what error?

well I have #! /bin/bash

@clabacchio ok
@clabacchio You're going to have to give more details. Show the error, if any

11:39 AM
@FaheemMitha well, first thing I've understood is that the cd command in bash scripting doesn't work as it does in the shell

@clabacchio It doesn't?

because each command is executed in a separate subshell

@clabacchio It is? Huh. Not to my recollection.

Q: Why doesn't "cd" work in a bash shell script?

cod3-monk-3yI'm trying to write a small script to change the current directory to my project directory: #!/bin/bash cd /home/tree/projects/java I saved this file as proj, changed the chmod, copied it to /usr/bin. When I call it by: proj, it does nothing. What am I doing wrong?

One sec, let me try
@clabacchio oh. hang on
@clabacchio works fine here. let me look at the SO question
@clabacchio oh, he is talking about after the script exits.
you are not concerned about that, right?

11:42 AM
@FaheemMitha ok, then no problem

it's true, once the script exits, you are back where you were. the script is run in a separate shell, of course

@FaheemMitha perfect, then
now...
@FaheemMitha it says, "no rule to make target 'clean"
though it works from the terminal, therefore it must be a valid command

@clabacchio that means the clean target is not defined. does it work when you type it in manually at the shell? you can add a pwd to make sure you are in the right place.
pwd on a separate line.

@FaheemMitha well it seems to have problems with return markers
line 4: $'pwd\r': command not found

@clabacchio what does?
@clabacchio what OS is this? what is \r?

11:47 AM
@FaheemMitha well I'm using cygwin on windows

@clabacchio Eww.

@FaheemMitha \r is inserted by notepad++ when writing the script
@FaheemMitha hehe I'm sorry, that's the work laptop

@clabacchio Oh, bummer. Can't you stop it?
Or use a different editor?
You can get both emacs and vi on Windows, afaik.
Also, other editors which may be more Windows-centric, but less awful.
I don't know about the \r issue. if you can't figure it out, it might be on topic here. You could certainly wait around and try in the chat later.

@FaheemMitha wait a second, I may have solved the issue :)
notepad++ has different settings for new line
@FaheemMitha it was in windows mode, just had to change to U/L mode
now it seems to run well

@clabacchio ok

11:53 AM
@FaheemMitha cool thanks :)

A: after installing centos 7 Windows7 is not working

DreamCoderFirst of using live cd of windows you can recover windows. Than Reinstall CentOS using live cd.

@slm 'Cause I was hoping the OP would fix it. Hopeless optimist, that's me. Go ahead, nuke the thing, I'd rather not delete it myself now after the comments.

I wish those 2 Q's were closed.
one ones w/ the bounties. They're horrible Q's.

@slm those are the ones with the weird 700 point bounties?

@slm I know, I'm thinking of refunding the bounty and closing the damn thing. Let him waste his rep on something worthwhile.

slm
@terdon - pls do that.

12:40 PM
@terdon Can you do that?

@FaheemMitha Yup. Done.

@terdon That's some agressive downvoting. I'm guessing it was the "urgent" thing that sparked that.
hey its urgent thats why asked here.! — user73214 Jun 21 at 12:38
If it's so urgent, give us the email address of your professor, so that we can hand in your assignment directly. With one less step in the chain, it'll be faster. What time is it due? — Gilles Jun 21 at 12:42
Priceless.

@FaheemMitha The whole thing was horrible.
@FaheemMitha Yeah :)

Sometimes Gilles has a sense of humor.
Any updates on the new emacs.sx? Gilles said they start the site Tuesday or Wednesday.

slm
That's my favorite comment that he's ever left.

@slm It's a good one.

Hello everyone :)

Hey @Kiwy, long time, no see.

@terdon yes indeed

Hey @Kiwy

my job is much more busy than it use to be :D

same here

1:18 PM
hi @slm

@Kiwy And more pleasant I hope.

slm
yes hope it's better than that last fiasco

@terdon obvisouly :D
it's infact awesome ! system vmware netapp networking firewalling
everything in one job
I'm very happy with it :)
anyway, I'll try to catch up on UL from time to time

@terdon, @slm planetmaker is visiting here from #mercurial.
I persuaded him to ask a question here.
@Kiwy better job, less time on SE, eh?
@slm @terdon do you think you could help this guy?
Hi, would you be able to give explicit instructions? What is the rpm? Is it one of the links on the link I provided? What do I need to do to build it? Where should I build it? — user997112 11 mins ago

@FaheemMitha well more time at work less on internet :D, also less time to get bored :)

1:24 PM
@Kiwy Ah

@FaheemMitha I'm completly helpless here :D
debian only man :D
see you

@Kiwy I didn't mean you. :-)

@FaheemMitha I answered.

@terdon Great.

I am not sure if it is only me or anyone else feels that the OP of this question seems pretty rude to all the answerers.

@terdon Why did you close this? What's too broad about it?
it's a homework dump, so definitely deserves a downvote, but it's answerable
@slm I'm sure I've done better (and it isn't the only time I've left a similar comment)

@Gilles is that the maximum votes you got for comments or you remember some other instance where you got more?

@Ramesh no idea. data.stackexchange.com

@Gilles because I figure multiple choice questions are kinda too broad by definition. More to the point, I wanted to close it because it had been given a 200 point bounty by a user who's been abusing the bounty system (giving bounties to crap apparently to get rid of their rep) across the network (check the TL).
I might have been too quick there.
Does everyone feel that should remain open?

Not sure, is it possible to deny the bounty by mods?

@Ramesh Yes

@Ramesh yes, and it's already done
My top-voted comment:
nohup and disown both can be said to suppress SIGHUP, but in different ways. nohup makes the program ignore the signal initially (the program may change this). nohup also tries to arrange for the program not to have a controlling terminal, so that it won't be sent SIGHUP by the kernel when the terminal is closed. disown is purely internal to the shell; it causes the shell not to send SIGHUP when it terminates. — Gilles Nov 9 '10 at 18:26

And I think that @Gilles is right and I let my annoyance guide me there. Unless anyone objects, I'll reopen it.
@Ramesh It's not just you. We already suspended him once for rudeness.

@Gilles I just got it to the century mark :)

drs
Are U&L people interested in committing to the vi/vim site proposal?

4:00 PM
@drs Sure. It's a far better choice than the emacs proposal.

drs
@derobert you can say that again

@drs I also use vim frequently. So I am also interested :)

I wonder if I'm a vim "expert" or just an "Avid Enthusiast"

disowns @derobert

Although I'm not sure if the vim site will get enough commitment. I mean, its clear the OS pretending to be an editor is broad enough for its own site, but...
@Braiam does emacs have its own systemd yet?

drs
4:04 PM
Yeah, even if it gets to beta, I feel like it'll be tough to sustain enough questions/day for either emacs or vi

@derobert has systemd's scope expanded to include emacs yet?

@Gilles I believe so...
at least, I heard that in a flamewar on debian-devel :-)

slm
@Gilles Still I find it the most humorous. I've laughed several times now when I've re-read it or just thought about it. Cracked me up.

that's good too

4:15 PM
not so funny out of context I guess
@drs . — the one thing that's easier in vi

Hah, it's nice that there is an upvoted incorrect answer there...
Congrats, Undo.

@derobert where?

this is funny

3
A: Which amongst the given option is TRUE about login shell?

Undo1) is incorrect because the kernel doesn't decide the availability of the shell, it's actually the hard drive that does that. If the shell doesn't exist on disk, it is deemed unavailable. 2) is also incorrect, as different users can have different login shells. 3) also is incorrect. One doesn't...

4:23 PM
@derobert Them's fighting words.
@derobert Flamewar?

@derobert look at my original answer

@FaheemMitha Yes. That's what debian-devel is for, systemd flamewars.

I tried to get four people to post one answer each justifying one of the four options, but there weren't enough people around in chat that day

@derobert I must have missed the memo.

@derobert status-bydesign ;)

4:26 PM
I wonder if I should commit to the vi proposal...

@Gilles Ah! That makes sense. Troll the luser.

/me thinks better of it.

yup

I could write and ask what happens if you hit the colon key, and get 100 upvotes...

Though I think I'd have just voted to close that question as 'off-topic, do your own homework'.

4:29 PM
@Gilles any news about the emacs site?

just who summoned the Undo?

slm
I've committed to the vi proposal

I am present everywhere, I just can't be seen in most cases.

I donno. I didn't ping him.
Maybe someone accidentally pressed C-Z, and that summoned him?

@derobert ITYM someone pressed u

4:32 PM
@Undo I don't think we have been properly introduced. Are you human, or a force of nature? Like Gilles, for example.

<-- dog! :D

Well, he hasn't committed to the vim proposal, so maybe it's meta-hyper-super x (((undo)))), or however emacs does that...

I'm firmly in the vi(m) camp

@Undo dog?

4:33 PM
I think he meant dawg

Ah! I think I understand, when you press u, @Undo fetches your previous text. So of course he's a dog. That makes sense, in an odd sort of way.
2

Is that Benji?
@derobert Clear as mud.

@FaheemMitha Well, you certainly wouldn't expect a cat to play fetch with you.

Mine used to as a kitten actually.

@derobert Depends on the cat. Maybe it is the Amazing Fetching Cat.

4:36 PM
Unless you're playing Xillia 2. Then the cats will rob a town blind.

@derobert Another game reference?

Yes. To a video game this time. Tales of Xillia 2, of course.

@derobert Pressing the undo key works in Emacs, but not many keyboards have one

@Gilles Yeah... I haven't seen a keyboard with an undo key since long ago so Mac keyboards had one of the F-keys marked undo.
But I suspect that's not the one Emacs uses.
Even Wikipedia's picture of a Space Cadet Keyboard doesn't have an undo button. It does have buttons to control Pandora, though.

I liked the principle of having left-side buttons on Sun keyboard (haven't had one in over a decade), but the arrangement was totally haphazard

@Gilles ah yeah, I guess the Sun keyboards did have one...
Wonder if I still have one of those lying around somewhere. Suspect I tossed them all.

@Ramesh Yeah, we've been having trouble with him lately.

@Ramesh Wow, that guy/gal seems to be doing his best to avoid being helped.

@derobert His initial comment was pretty rude. He told something like do not answer my questions.

@derobert And you can't see the half of it, you should see the deleted comments.

5:03 PM
I was just looking at unix.stackexchange.com/q/151916 and it made me wonder what this -t flag is good for.

man ssh?
I seem to recall it's to get a tty.
Yeah:
 -t Force pseudo-tty allocation. This can be used to execute arbi‐
         trary screen-based programs on a remote machine, which can be
         very useful, e.g. when implementing menu services. Multiple -t
         options force tty allocation, even if ssh has no local tty.
For example ssh user@host top fails but ssh -t user@host top works

Yeah. Any time you want to spawn an interactive commend. I use it for mutt all the time.

I don't follow. I've never used it. I can run alpine remotely without this.
Also emacs.
Phew, finally submitted that review. Being an academic is being a sucker. Only an academic would not get paid for work like this.

@FaheemMitha Really? That's surprising either work without -t. Are you running as ssh user@host 'emacs' or are you doing an ssh user@host, then spawning emacs from the shell?
If you let it spawn a shell, -t is implied.

5:18 PM
@derobert The latter. After logging in, is what you mean, right?
@terdon do you ever feel like a sucker?

Huh? Sometimes. Often even.

@terdon Specifically in an academic context, to be clear.
Time to watch the new season of the Big Bang Theory. Does hoping that Sheldon gets hit by a bus make me a bad person?

@FaheemMitha Same answer applies.

@terdon ok

5:44 PM
@FaheemMitha Yeah. If you log in without specifying a command to run (so you get your login shell), it automatically allocates a pty, as if you'd given it -t.

@derobert I see. So this only makes a difference in automated type scenarios, then.

Well, not normally automated. Just when you want to log in to a machine to execute a specific command. E.g., when I do ssh mailserver -t mutt
I don't want a shell, I just want to run mutt.
@terdon You could always smuggle a screenshot my way…
Anyway, lunch time.

@derobert here's a random example:
> @ MichaelMrozek it was a piece of silly-stupid shit before edit and it smells even more after it. Delete it – poige

6:01 PM
@derobert No shell, just mutt. Sounds like a weird kind of ad.
What difference does it make whether there is a shell or not?
@derobert You could always watch Jerry Springer instead.

@terdon Wow.
@FaheemMitha Well, it saves some typing. And makes it easier to launch for a script (which is what I do in my case, I have a script that sets up several windows... Opens an email client for work, opens a mail log view, opens my home email in mutt, arranges all the windows properly, etc.)

@terdon I'm impressed.
@derobert Fancy. Why does it make it easier to launch a script?
I'm wondering why anyone would try to deliberately annoy random strangers on the net. Maybe his parents didn't love him enough?
Well, watched the first episode of BBT, and Sheldon is still alive and kicking.

6:16 PM
@FaheemMitha Well, because otherwise you'd just get a window with a command prompt, and have to start mutt yourself.

@derobert Oh. Not a big difference, really.

Well, so one way you can start the machine up, fire off the script, and go fill up the tea kettle while it starts everything up. The other way you have to babysit it.

@derobert Oh, hmm. Right. Though I usually have my machine running. And I don't drink tea. Never really appealed, for some reason. I like fruit juice though.
I've read that you are better off leaving machines running from a hardware stress POV. OF course, it wastes electricity...

I have a bunch of little scripts like that. E.g., I have several for different programs I work on at work, and I have different scripts to set up an environment to work on each. And several branches of one of them.
Anyway, actually heading to lunch now, before I miss my chance...

Q: Using daemon mode in Gnome 3

tbekolayI've gotten the Emacs daemon to work through the command line using the EmacsWiki page, but I'm stuck on how to get the client to run through the Gnome 3 launcher. How can I set up a Gnome desktop file that launches a GUI window that connects to the Emacs daemon?

Q: How can I use my local Emacs client as the $EDITOR for remote machines I access over TRAMP?

Tikhon JelvisI often use TRAMP to manage several remote servers, both for editing files and running remote shells in shell-mode. However, this does not work when a command uses the EDITOR variable to edit a file, such as crontab -e especially because shell-mode is a "dumb" terminal that does not support runni...

@Gilles I see the site is up. Why was I not notified?
damn, it won't let me log in without my invitation email
Ok, I'm in now.

@Gilles Interesting that private beta questions onebox, but of course you can't see them if you're not in the private beta.

@derobert I thought you signed up. Must have misremembered.

@FaheemMitha Nah. I run Unix, not Emacs.

@derobert ok

Written in elisp, it'd appear.

@FaheemMitha you can log in through Area 51
the emails take a little while to get through

@Gilles yes, that's what i did.
@derobert huh?

@FaheemMitha Well, that's explain the bot's proficiency in getting emacs rep. He's (its?) written in emacs lisp.

@derobert Oh, right. Like M-x psychiatrist.
