Question: I'm considering buying a multi-function printer, in large part for the scanning function. A standalone scanner might have been a suitable option, but I've been unable to locate a suitable one. One feature I would like is duplex scanning. That means the scanner scans both sides of the paper automatically. The printer I'm considering does not have this feature.

@FaheemMitha Does it not have a document feeder? Or did someone make an ADF without duplex capability?

It seems one has to run the papers through in one direction, then turn them over and do them the other direction. Apparently this would end up in one pdf. My question is - how annoying would it be to rearrange the pages of the resulting pdf?
@derobert It does have a document feeder. but it doesn't do duplex scanning. it seems it just scans one side at a time.

@FaheemMitha well, you could definitely script it with e.g. pdftk

To summarize, I'd get a pdf which would be in the order 1, 3, 5, 7, 2, 4, 6, 8.

@FaheemMitha Normally, the way it works is the feeder puts the document across the scanner, then flips it internally, then puts it across the scanner again, then flips it again, then ejects it. At least, that's the cheap way.
The expensive (and much faster) way is to have two scanners, and scan both sides at once.

4:35 PM
@derobert right, and the smart way.
@derobert the brother printer in question doesn't attempt that, i don't think. probably wouldn't work very well - sounds like a recipe for sticking/jamming.
it is the 7065DN i mentioned earlier. There is an Epson color inkjet which does have duplex scanning, but I don't really want a color inkjet.

That's the way to jam the OfficeJet I have—try some crumpled paper in the ADF duplexer.

But other implementations don't have that problem, apparently.

Yikes.
@derobert Other printers?
That's the color inkjet above. It seems really hard to get stuff over here. In practice one is restricted to a small subset of models.

@FaheemMitha Yeah, other ADFs. Whether multifunction or just standalone scanners

4:39 PM
so, you want a scanner that do duplex scanning?

Anyway, this epson apparently scans both sides at once, which is pretty attractive.

Also, if its cheaper to get an inkjet... well, you can just not use the printer part.

@Braiam That would be preferable. Bear in mind I'm in India.
@derobert Actually, it is more expensive than the brother, but ti does do the duplex scanning.

which Brother was it?

the brother is like 15000 rupees, the epson is 20000

4:40 PM
(and BTW: I'd be surprised if you find a cheap scanner that does duplexing except via the flip-the-page method)

@derobert Yes, probably not. BTW, the epson surprisingly also has drivers in the form of debs.
Since when does SE expand stuff from amazon?
@derobert If it is scriptable via pdftk I guess I can live with that. Any downside you can think of?

wow, wikipedia has a list D: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duplex_scanning

@FaheemMitha Sounds like a PITA to re-feed the paper by hand. Means you can't tell it to scan a long document and leave.

@derobert Yes, it does a bit. Meaning, reversing the stack and running it through again, right?

@FaheemMitha yeah

4:47 PM
I guess I could live with it. It's not ideal, though. I wonder if it is worth buying the Epson just for that though.

I don't see anything in the manual about it being in the same PDF. But pdftk won't really care if its two PDFs
Though, it also looks like (with the Brother) that it doesn't actually make PDFs, that's the software on the computer.

@derobert Hmm, I think I read each scan would be one pdf. But I'm not clear what a scan consists of. Maybe all the pages on one side would be PDFs, on the other side would be a separate PDF.

finally started using dnsmasq!

@derobert I think one can select that in the control panel. When emailing it.

Ah, maybe. I hadn't checked the network manual yet

4:53 PM
I did find one standalone scanner fof 25000, but it doesn't seem to be supported by linux. I guess I could use it as a standalone.
@derobert Looking at the manual now.

brother-usa.com/VirData/Content/… ... email appears to be something done through Brother software installed on your computer.
p. 54 of that PDF
Not entirely sure though. p. 56 makes it sound otherwise.
Though it says TIFF, not PDF.
Maybe its only a download for those other models listed. Not sure.

@mikeserv what's gorrila warface?

@derobert To some extent I'm going with the questions/answers left by amazon customers. Though maybe I shouldn't put too much weight on those.

beats me.
why?

5:00 PM
God. That DONG almost put me through the roof!

@Braiam guerilla?

@FaheemMitha Well, I guess you could try Brother's live chat. Or call them. At least if they've outsourced their customer support, you'll be able to understand them!

Oh, yeah. He called me. Dude's a jerk. I don't wanna be in his secret spy network any more.

@Braiam Wow...

@derobert :-) You mean because they'll be Indian? :-)
@mikeserv Huh?

5:03 PM
You think he capitalizes unnecessarily when typing - just get him on the phone... It's not easy.
Oh, sure, @FaheemMitha - you know, all us jerky military types are buddy-buddy.

@Braiam Where is this from?

@FaheemMitha SO

@Braiam Link? I'd like to join the downvote party there.

@FaheemMitha Yep. That was one of the things people were complaining about on the HP reviews. Except of course HP's call center was in Cebu...

He can kill you 700 ways with just his bare hands - that's a lot of hands!

5:04 PM
@derobert Cebu?

@FaheemMitha nah, it was nucked already :P

@mikeserv A lot of ways.
@Braiam Too bad.

@FaheemMitha Yep. Google Maps informs me its in the Philippines.

@derobert Ah.

I only ever knew the city name. We had HP as a client for a while.

5:06 PM
I met a Seal once who introduced himself like that - "Hi, I'm Steve. I'm an ex-Seal. I can kill you 3 times in the next 30 seconds."
"Hi, I'm Mike. I'm 15. You're scary."

@mikeserv You've sure met some "interesting" people.
I've met some scary people in my life, but usually they don't start off with death threats as an introduction.

It was my mom's boyfriend, actually. I'm pretty sure he was just trying to break the ice.

@mikeserv :-) Make friends with the kid?
Original approach. Threatening bodily harm.

Too bad that "navy seal" is anonymous (and, in all likelihood, not in the navy). It'd be fun to try and report that to his commanding officer.

He was a nice guy eventually. I did a demo gig with him - we were tearing down an old apartment building or something. He the doors off with a shotgun - just for fun!

5:08 PM
@derobert He probably isn't any of the things he says he is. Probably a 12 year old who reads war comics.
@mikeserv Colorful. Did he know which way it was pointing?

@FaheemMitha Sure. Though I'd guess older than that.

When some of the birdshot ricocheted and caught him in the chest he pulled out that shiny rambo knife he always carried and started prying the pellets out!

@derobert Maybe.

Dude was psychotic. He's dead - cirrhosis.

@mikeserv Oh, sorry to hear that.

5:10 PM
He just pointed both barrels at the brass hinges two feet from his face!
Well, he lived it up while he could. It is sad though - he was sober years before the liver rot got him.

@mikeserv Too much drinking?

Still, it might as well have been blood poisoning to watch him...
Guess so - I never knew him drunk.
He was a foresworn 12-stepper when I met him. Still a psycho.

I've heard that Army people often have a hard time adjusting to civilian life.

Nah - civilians have a hard time adjusting to us.

Expecially if they have been in the army a long time.

5:13 PM
The worst part about the army is just that - all of your bosses are the ones that were too stupid to take advantage of all of that free school and instead opt for the institution.

@derobert you seem to have generally positive feelings about Brother. Any thoughts about the Epson printer I posted?

They stay in long enough to get promoted. Idiots - the lot of them.

@mikeserv Yes, that's easy to believe. BTW, are you familar with the TV series MASH?

@FaheemMitha Been a long time since I've used an Epson. The last one I used was nice, but that was, errr, over a decade ago.

Yeah - I'm a fan. I knew a doctor like that, too. Captain Luke - he was one of the good ones. Dude stitched up my foot after I cut off my toe. I'd like to say I shot it off or lost it to an IED - but I just got it caught in a rusty stairwell...

5:16 PM
I've only used Brother, HP, and Canon printers recently.

How should I use the getgrent() in my linux shell?

how do you guys manage with the ink cartridge costs?

If I type it, I just get > symbol which I presume is looking for more characters.

@Braiam The HP XL ones are expensive, but last over 2,000 pages
You can also get 3rd-party ones for much less... never tried one, though.

@Ramesh eh? getgrent() is a C call. Are you writing a C program? The shell interface to getgrent is getent group

5:23 PM
well, couple of years ago I discovered that was cheaper to buy a new printer for the cartridges than the ink alone @derobert

@Braiam That's only the case for $30 printers. Mine was far more expensive.

@Patrick, thanks. I was just typing getgrent() and the system did not report any error. So, I was wondering if the shell could execute some implicit C calls.

@Ramesh ah, it's wanting you to define a function then

getgrent()
{
echo hi
}
... shell function definition syntax

@Patrick, this answer is then supposed to be implemented as a C function right? unix.stackexchange.com/a/132407/47538
@derobert, got it. Thanks :)

5:26 PM
@derobert ok

@Ramesh Yes, that answer is a lot of C code :-)

@Patrick, that was really cool answer. Instead of using commands, use the inbuilt C functions :) something to look for in future before answering I guess :)

@mikeserv MASH is a pretty good series as those things go.
Would be quite out of place on todays networks.

@Ramesh Yeah, I don't know why that answer is going into C code, getent group foo is much simpler :-)

Must have been a real challenge coming up with all new stories in the same locale.

5:29 PM
@Patrick, but the OP knows only the users. He doesn't know the groups right?
So in that question, will getent group foo work?

@Ramesh Then groups userfoo

The answer to OP's question is "no"

@Patrick, yup. That's what I suggested in my answer :) after that check the permissions using stat :)

A: Is there a way in Linux to have one non root user check if another non root user has permissions to a folder / file?

derobertIn general, the only way to know if user B can write to directory D is for user B to attempt to write to directory D. So, as root, you can su to the user and try it. Though that may not be 100% accurate; the user logging in and entering his password may change things (e.g., a pam module might se...

5:48 PM
df -hT is enough right?
http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/132411/combine-fdisk-and-df-in-the-same-output

@Ramesh ugh. the fdisk partition type is meaningless. Yes, I would guess df -hT, which is the filesystem type, is what he wants

@Patrick, thanks :)

@Ramesh Are u from India?

@Avinash, yes :)

6:10 PM
@Ramesh I don't understand how this site works? is this just for generic video games? And does a generic video games generally involve activities like murder, getting married, and buying property?

@FaheemMitha is not fault of the site, but the games

@FaheemMitha, no idea :) But just found the question title pretty interesting :)

there are games that are down to earth mundane... and the others...

@Braiam right, i'm just puzzled by the generic nature of the questions and answers. there is no reference to a particular game.

@FaheemMitha gotta rely on the tags pretty much

@Patrick ah, missed that. sounds like video games have got quite advanced. maybe people could just skip having a real life then.

So I was just wondering if I frame a weird question and put on some gaming tag does that work? :)

@FaheemMitha Some do...

@Ramesh That's the whole point of the site, to ask questions with weird titles.

Q: How can I keep monsters out of my nether regions?

Nick TIn order to find myself some nice lapis lazuli and get away from my current base, I'm building a little tunnel in the Nether to allow me to get into the midst of some fresh chunks fairly quickly. I have a nice little stone house, but as Ghasts and zombie pigmen can spawn at "any light level" in ...

wow. @derobert, this is pretty interesting :)

6:15 PM
@derobert I wouldn't say the whole point, but that's one of its more entertaining factors
I wish goat simulator ran on linux. That's one I'd like to try

@Patrick, To all Mac and Linux users:

We are currently working on a port of Goat Simulator to Mac and Linux! We don't have a date for when it's going to be done, but y'all are going to be goats! :D
That's sad.

@derobert yes, it looks like you can't actually email the pdf out from the printer.
the documentation is quite misleading. there would have to be a configurable email server on the printer and there isn't.
There is also this detailed review.
There are some cons:
- No double-sided scanning from ADF (or glass, for that matter)
- Relatively small paper tray (250 sheets--so if you buy a ream, you can put only half in the paper tray)
- Claims to have a "scan to e-mail" feature, but it can only do so by scanning to Brother's software on your computer, which will launch your mail client and attach the scan. (Some of their higher-end MFCs can "fax" or scan to e-mail directly from the printer via a built-in SMTP capability. I was hoping this was one of them; I was wrong. You can configure SMTP, but only for e-mailing printer errors to a
This scan to email thing is really misleading. Maybe a deliberate attempt at deception by the marketing dept.
Business types. They're all evil.

Too bad selection is so limited (and overpriced) in India...

@FaheemMitha, are you setting printer at your house?

@Ramesh I'm planning to.
@derobert No kidding. It's a nightmare. But one of the more minor drawbacks of living in India, believe me. As you would quickly realise if you were unfortunate enough to live here.
No doubt India would look good, however, to someone living in the outer reaches of Siberia, for example.
I expect it is quite hard to buy printers in Siberia too.

6:29 PM
And like heaven to someone in Somalia.

@derobert Dunno. How is Somalia these days? That was were that nasty civil war happened, right?
I wonder why they changed the font on academia.sx to be lighter after they graduated from beta. it's annoying.

@FaheemMitha I think it varies by where exactly you are in the country. Their central government entirely failed, and different parts are run by different local warlords. Or at least, that's the last I heard.

@derobert it sounds like this email feature is probably completely useless on linux.
@derobert Ok. Parts of Africa seem pretty messed up. Maybe even India would look good in comparison.
I mean, at least (for the most part) you don't have to worry about being hunted by death squads in India.
Though I believe the tribals have a hard time of it in certain areas, with people trying to steal their land and all.

Wikipedia informs me that Somalia has a central government again. So maybe its not as bad as it was a few years ago.

@derobert I doubt WP editors know what is going on in there.

6:35 PM
They probably know more than I do, though.

@derobert Sure. Or me.
The epson printer has exactly the same useless "email" feature. Pity - I really like the idea of emailing scans from the printer.
It must be said the epson manual is a lot more clearly written.

Some printers actually have that. But you'd probably be paying something obscene to get one there...
Of course, for the amount you're paying there, you could probably have one of those here :-(

@derobert In India? Yes, if I could even find one. So, with the brother linux software, the scan would pop up in sane, or be saved to the computer's hard drive, right?

@FaheemMitha yeah, depending on which app you're using to do the scan (sane is a library, basically)

@derobert oh
i thought sane was an app
Ok, this is confusing.
Use the touch panel to quickly scan a photo or document and save it on your computer or on a memory card. You can even scan and send the file to an online service or to a remote printer.

6:41 PM
it has some demo apps, but really its a library. apt-cache showpkg libsane

How could one send the file to an online service or remote printer?

Often on cheaper printers the touch panel just sends a notify to the computer, where the software on the computer does the actual work

@derobert Yes, that sounds like what would probably happen.

Though scan to memory card is probably entirely on the printer.
The cheap PIXMA I have does that, it'll scan to a file on a USB stick. That doesn't involve a computer.
apt-cache show scanbuttond ... that might work with it. No idea.

@derobert True. I think the Brother also allows saving to an external USB drive
Though I can't find it now.
