this is why I pester so much with the titles unix.stackexchange.com/a/175218/41104

2 hours later…
4:54 AM
@Braiam Where does sudo su rank on the signs of cluelessness?
(as opposed to sudo -s or sudo -i, of course)
And do we rate cluelessness in Ask Ubuntu's, or Ubuntu Lusers, or maybe just Ubuntus?

5 hours later…
9:44 AM
@derobert Cluelessness is measured in K. That's "Kalis", not to be confused with Kelvins.

10:37 AM
@derobert it would be fine if they at least read the rest of the question... but not even that! Just the title and boom!

@terdon Hmmm, for clarity, maybe we should measure it on degrees Kali, that way it'll be clear its not Kelvin.

:)

297K = a nice day outside. 297°K = brain numbingly clueless
@Braiam but reading is haaaaaaaard...

10:56 AM
Hi @derobert

About to go to bed. Should have gone to bed a while ago...

2 hours later…
12:50 PM
err... these answers needs to be revised unix.stackexchange.com/q/37625/41104
and the whole question protected

1:33 PM
@Braiam Done and done. Thanks

2:24 PM
sigh

3:03 PM
@terdon @slm this one's dedicated to you: communitybuilding.stackexchange.com/questions/944/…

where is the best place to put my ruby scripts? in my documents folder or in a folder in the home section?

@Vass wherever you feel comfortable with and doesn't mess with the normal operation of your system

won't make much of a difference like in windows ?

@Vass windows is not linux, but the same applies to both, mess with your system files and you will cry
and I don't know why "windows" is relevant to ruby scripts

ok^^ will keep that in mind. I was using windows, and was working with ruby, but it became unbearable so switched to linux to work on the ruby
and am in a new world

3 hours later…
7:56 PM
@Vass directories, not folders

@FaheemMitha, yes, sorry!!

Hi @derobert - reminder about

@Braiam I voted to close

1 hour later…

come on guys, don't approve each and every tag wiki/excerpt thoughtlessly, there were at least 3 plagiarization and all of them didn't include when or why use the tags unix.stackexchange.com/review/suggested-edits/72946 <-- the most representative example

9:27 PM
@Braiam where is the content from?

@FaheemMitha, can you give me some advice on where to find a color theme to install for the terminal? for some reason the solarized theme is empty for the terminal

@Vass I have no idea. What terminal is this?

gnome terminal
is there a difference? is the color theme files not the same for all terminals?

@Vass Dunno. You want to use like a png file for the background? something like that?

just nice highlighting of the commands text and nice toolbar

9:36 PM
@Vass Oh. Sounds like a reasonable question for the site. Just make sure to be clear what you are asking.
And the command text highlighting doesn't have anything to do with the terminal.
What is your distribution?
you mean you want the bash cmd line to be colorized? I don't know if that is possible. It's interactive.

@FaheemMitha just google it... the man pages, wiki pages, etc. is not useful in any case and poisonous to keep catering them, is difficult to make people read them to use the properly, now we are filling them with rubbish

@FaheemMitha because it is interactive it is not possible to make it look like vim?
I downloaded the git repository for solarized- ethanschoonover.com/solarized
and the part for the terminal was empty^^
although I had found other blog posts pointing to it and giving instructions
the next best thing I have found is a terminal 'emulator', but what is a terminal emulator?? geekssharingspace.org/2013/12/…

A terminal emulator, terminal application, term, or tty for short, is a program that emulates a video terminal within some other display architecture. Though typically synonymous with a shell or text terminal, the term terminal covers all remote terminals, including graphical interfaces. A terminal emulator inside a graphical user interface is often called a terminal window. A terminal window allows the user access to a text terminal and all its applications such as command-line interfaces (CLI) and text user interface (TUI) applications. These may be running either on the same machine or on a...

@Seth, so is it possible to get a theme for the terminal like vim and emacs?

yes it is.
what emulator are you using?

9:53 PM
gnome-terminal

going to try it now
any idea why "Unable to locate package dconf-cli"?
i cant even find it on the synaptic package manager
@Seth, do you know how I can install dconf-cli if apt-get is unable to locate it? I have seen it being used elsewhere in other tools. do i go to a webpage like packages.debian.org/sid/utils/dconf-cli and download one of the files?^^
I downloaded, packages.debian.org/sid/amd64/dconf-cli/download, did dpkg install and got errors that it would break dconf-tools

10:16 PM
@Vass this kind of question should really be asked on the site, not here.
You'll also get more people seeing it, which from your pov is presumably a good thing
@Vass what does apt-cache policy dconf-cli

Im wondering whether these questions are not general enough? to specific to a particular problem I am having

Also, of course, the idea is for the question/answers to be archived so they are useful to others

apt-cache policy dconf-cli
dconf-cli:
Installed: (none)
Candidate: (none)
Version table:

@Vass Well, ask it. If people think it is unsuitable, it will be closed. But the bar here is not particularly high. There are tons of niche questions asked here every day.
root@orwell:/home/faheem# apt-cache policy dconf-cli
dconf-cli:
Installed: (none)
Candidate: 0.22.0-1
Version table:
0.22.0-1 0
50 http://debian.lcs.mit.edu/debian/ testing/main amd64 Packages
50 http://debian.lcs.mit.edu/debian/ unstable/main amd64 Packages
You need testing/unstable sources. If you add those, make sure to add a preferences file too.
i.e. /etc/apt/preferences
Adding the following in there will work:
Package: *
Pin: release a=testing
Pin-Priority: 50

Package: *
Pin: release a=unstable
Pin-Priority: 50
If you don't do that, you'll end up upgrading your system to unstable. Are you currently running wheezy?
@Seth what does this theme do exactly?

@FaheemMitha, did not change anything. Will ask a question on it :D
