halp my father is a creationist

That is a good thing
Unless you mean YEC instead of OEC, that is

halp my whole country is creationist

@JanDvorak YEC actually

@TuxCopter have you tried showing him sheep and saying no way anyone would waste time creating such dumb creature :P

7:32 PM
They exist as an example of humility

CMC: write a function that takes quadratic function and x and outputs derivative at x,

Actually he says small-scale evolution is possible, but there is no way we could have evolved from unicelullar organisms

@TuxCopter Intelligent design != YEC ... they can overlap, but not necessarily.

come on at least use a link shortener

7:36 PM
@Alt-F4 it isnt always funny :/

@AdmBorkBork Huh, I tought creationist means someone who believe in intelligent design

@TuxCopter YEC = young-earth creationist = earth is 6000 years old

@Downgoat OK, actual try it online!

Is it possible to retract a reopen vote?

@Alt-F4 dk0.us/3 0/10 not TIO linnk

7:37 PM
@Alt-F4 oh pls

you know we can see that the link isnt di
ah double ninja'd

@betseg but it is different...

Question: what is your favorite mouse brand (excluding logitech)

@Alt-F4 ...isnt tio

@betseg That's my URL shortener

7:39 PM
@Downgoat hamster :p

@Downgoat Razer

@betseg link to website?

@Downgoat Probably old Razer mice

ಠ_ಠ that is not mouse brand

7:40 PM
brand

@Downgoat still a rodent

oh my god whoever designed razer's website needs to be fired immediately

Wow, the website is kinda slow...

> kinda

Wow, I can't see anything on my screen because their images are huge.

7:42 PM
@mbomb007 About poorly designed websites: Check out sirinlabs.com

Also, holding Ctrl then scrolling doesn't zoom

This website crashes my browser
Too much WebGL

pls CMC answer idk how else to do gradient descent for ANN

Of course, I'm on a 2010 laptop, so you may have better luck on your modern computers

@Alt-F4 Works for me, but the mouse moves really slow

7:43 PM
@mbomb007 This website takes over a minute to load.
That's... something.

Can the quadratic be input as a list of coefficients?

> Alt-F4 works for me
Good advice when a browser is hung.

@Alt-F4 Loaded in like 5 seconds for me.

@BasicSunset yes

@Downgoat I have the non-elite version of this: razerzone.com/gaming-mice/razer-deathadder-elite

7:45 PM
@mbomb007 Huh
Internet connection must be faster

Anyone here know of a good MC server with an actual cohesive community?

@LegionMammal978 OPPCGMC

I use a trackpad-- on a 2008 mac.

ಠ_ಠ

@Downgoat Yeah, kept feeling lonely on servers, I'll try that

7:46 PM
MC used to be cool, back in Beta and earlier.

@Alt-F4 do you run the server now

I'd say it's still pretty cool, just the overall community has taken a nosedive

MC is still cool, just Microsoft and the 4-year old community ruined it

ninja'd oh no I might get 11'd for noise for this

user165474
@LegionMammal978 What does it mean to get 11'd?

7:48 PM
More like their new target audience is kids. So they add a bunch of crap to the game. I came from an era when I'd read every single wiki page to know it all.

@HyperNeutrino Message deleting

@HyperNeutrino Used to refer to "Mod abuse!!11!", now mod action in general

user165474
@LegionMammal978 Where'd it originate? (btw, is the 11 just a typo on the exclamation marks)

@Alt-F4 I have 90 Mbits/sec
Up and down

@HyperNeutrino That's where the term originated

7:49 PM

From the exclamations

@Alt-F4 ^ where you aware of this

@mbomb007 Yeah, Microsoft try to target a larger audience because $$

@Downgoat Yes

user165474
Okay, thanks.

7:50 PM
@TuxCopter Even before Microsoft though. "The End" was the worst thing to happen to MC.

@mbomb007 I actually like the new additions

user165474
And yay, I can see deleted posts now. :P

@Downgoat Of what?
@mbomb007 The End was cool

@Alt-F4 see picture

@mbomb007 Meh, I find the End kinda cool

7:50 PM
@Downgoat Cant

@Alt-F4 D: is internet or something broken

@Downgoat School filter blocks *.imgur because mature content

TOR

@JanDvorak Gets you a 24 hour network ban

Worth it

7:52 PM
No, like immediately
No chance to even connect

:D got watson integration working in app
still idk how to ANN

@Downgoat Oh, wait, you mean the PPCG server? Does it still have people on it?

3 messages moved to Trash

:36523871 just like the duck

@LegionMammal978 I go on almost every day
@mbomb007 whoosh

7:57 PM
i cant imgur if i dont change dns too, and tor is banned in the country D:

@Alt-F4 What's the address?

Hi guys. Some time ago, I posted a proposal in the sandbox, which got no feedback whatsoever. So I was wondering if it was too average to be worth posting it on main, or if the specs were unclear, or if it could still be interesting.

Q: Partially Valid Answers

SparklePonyRecently I posted an answer that handled all but one part of a question. (It was an answer to 'You had me at hello' that could not handle infinite input. I was approached by a moderator and told to take it down because it did not properly answer the question (which I agree with). I eventually del...

@dim It would be closed as either "too broad" or "unclear what you're asking"

8:08 PM
What is unclear about it? I've just finished my first reading of it

I think there needs to be a specific specification. That's why it's called a specification.

dim
@mbomb007 ok. I thought it was interesting to leave the answerer choose the mapping. Some suggestions are made, still.

"You need to expand the number of combinations, either by allowing shorter words, or by allowing VCVCVCVCV combinations, as well."

I can't think of an ambiguity in the current specification. We've had plenty of challenges where you can choose more than one possible approach to satisfy the spec. It's still clear what counts as valid and what does not

So is there a target amount?
It just says it has to be expanded, but what is the goal?
Oh wait, nvm
Found the line about that.

dim
8:10 PM
A target amount? 32 bit, was that the insformation you were looking for?

@dim I agree it's more interesting with a strict requirement but leaving the method open - I also think it's sufficiently different from the previous one you mention that it won't be considered a duplicate

@dim Hey, that's the string-to-string mapping I was talking about earlier (converted string to integer, then applied that transformation)

@mbomb007 Now that I know you missed that bit, I can see why you'd think it too broad :)

Hmm. I think with your methodology it makes more sense to have Y as a consonant.
You wouldn't be able to hear the difference if it were a vowel.
But that's just from a vocal perspective, not coding
I think it's fine

Hello

8:12 PM
It's currently matching the rules from Doorknob's previous challenge

Is @ETHproductions here?

dim
Ok, thanks

Or anyone else who wants to help me golf this: codegolf.stackexchange.com/a/115372/63774?

dim
@LegionMammal978 Earlier? When did you mention that? You had the idea of a similar challenge?

@dim There have definitely been previous challenges with 2 pieces of code required - that doesn't seem a problem either

8:14 PM
@dim In chat, too lazy to find the link

@Luke Idk cubix

dim
@trichoplax Ok, that what I was most afraid of. Thanks.

But yeah, it was basically an alternating base-20,5 transformation (consonants didn't include q)

@mbomb007 No ploblem

@LegionMammal978 Huh? It should work...
I have no idea why it doesn't

dim
8:16 PM
@LegionMammal978 And, in the end, you decided not to make a challenge out of it?

@dim Not a challenge-posting type of guy

@dim If someone happened to write one piece of code that does both tasks (outputs integer when string is input, outputs string when integer is input) would that be an acceptable answer, or should only separate code count?

@Alt-F4 Direct connect says connection refused
Is there some port number?

I can't connect either

@trichoplax If they're full programs, aren't they all strings on output?

8:17 PM
Will fix before 3 PM PST

dim
@trichoplax That should probably be accepted. I will clarify this when posting, if I do.

@AdmBorkBork Sorry - it's out of context without the sandbox post. In this case strings are case insensitive letters only

Looks like my server got reset (?!)

@dim I think either way could work as long as it's unambiguously clear what is acceptable

wtf

8:19 PM
@trichoplax Ah, gotcha, didn't realize you guys were still discussing the "map a pronounceable word" sandbox.

Should I start a modded server?

dim
Thanks. Now, on another subject, I'm working on the tetris challenge (which I'm not sure I can entierly solve, but so far, it's progressing). The specs are rather fuzzy, though. For example, there is no way to get actual random data to choose a piece, obviously. So can I just cycle over the tetris pieces? Or should I do my best randomizing that (for example, by using the delays between simulated key presses, which are unpredictable).
I think it's already too much of a pain, so I'd be glad to simplify things as much as possible.

What tetris challenge?

dim

Q: Build a working game of Tetris in Conway's Game of Life

Joe Z.Here is a theoretical question - one that doesn't afford an easy answer in any case, not even the trivial one. Oh

I set up Google Magenta (google's music generation project; github.com/tensorflow/magenta) and after fiddling with it for a while, I got it to generate music and play!
The hardest part was converting MIDI files to WAV files :P

@noɥʇʎԀʎzɐɹƆ You can read MIDI files with WMP...

@TuxCopter I don't have Windows. I just used timidity.

I mean any sane media player supports MIDI

8:47 PM
not VLC

wut

and SoX didn't work when I tried using it
although it supposedly supports it
It didn't use too much cpu either- I didn't notice any cpu strain and it ran for like 0.5 seconds
"a while" was ~15 mins

@AdmBorkBork Any tips for this new user? (Since you're basically the only PS golfer I can think of)

I wouldn't describe MIDI as a media format exactly.

ConnorLSW, briantist, Joey, TessellatingHeckler ... just to name some others.
Sure, I think I'm the most active, but I'm not the only.

8:51 PM
@noɥʇʎԀʎzɐɹƆ Try Timidity?

@quartata I did; that's what worked
it was incredibly easy to set up magenta
and it's licensed under Apache 2.0 (essentially a BSD or MIT with more legal stuff)

@MitchSchwartz Uhh... I would hate killing people... so I should get a degree in medicine?

Do we have a mod in the house? These should all be moved to the Tetris chat room

dim
@mbomb You're right. I didn't go there because I though only the common implementation should be discussed there. Sorry. Well, I'm going to sleep anyway.

@mbomb007 I'll move them

@dim Oh, great idea.
Bonus if your implementation also "plays" the Tetris theme song.

10:00 PM
Was that right? Any messages missed or accidentally caught in that?

That's good
Thanks

yeah getting a degree in medicine in an hour sounds roughly doable
or i guess more like 45 minutes by now

perhaps, but
