@Riker engage!

it's my name IRL, that's why I changed it fwiw

I was about to say the flag bug was back but it was an actual flag

lol

flag? bug?
you mean the blue circle?

Q: Chat flag notification, but no flag

MegoIt appears this bug is back. Upon refreshing any chat page (even when dumping the cache and hard reloading), a chat flag notification is displayed, but there is no chat flag.

5:08 PM
I was thinking 🇺🇸
^ funny, that renders as a flag in the broswer, but as [U][S] in a text editor

@aditsu It's meant to render as a flag.
But on lots of systems, it renders as a tiny US.

I think it's fonts supporting digraphs.

oh, my fonts have no flag digraphs

they're ligatures apparently

5:12 PM
so I hadn't realised at all that it was meant to render as a flag

Does anyone here remember this?
> Unknown site "adviza.stackexchange.com", don't know who to ping. Don't blame me, I'm just a bot.

@ais523 I can't find any font that shows the flag either, but the browser is somehow doing it
oh wait! Noto Emoji!
even Symbola didn't work, but Noto Emoji has it

@flawr hey I found something: I can hide them from the android app (account -> notifications), then they go away on the desktop too (cc @KritixiLithos @Riker)

Ah, wonder why they haven't done that with desktop too

they meant to, but there's a boog somewhere
welp, my DNS server can't resolve www.google.com.hk now
I'd google the error message, but.. erm..

I just realized why my input method wasn't working...
I was creating a Scanner with a string instead of a file with that String as it's name
so it always gave me the same input

@aditsu cool thank you!!

@wizzwizz4 hey did you see the retrocomputing HNQ?
@flawr no more plane crash videos for me ;)

@Riker Which one? We've been getting loads! :-)

Q: What early home computers have more than one CPU, where both could be used by the programmer?

WilsonI am interested to know if any computers that are topical on this SE had more than one CPU, where this plurality could be leveraged by a programmer. Some cases I don't so much care about: The Amigas could add a faster processor, but doing so disabled the onboard CPU so that we couldn't multita...

I saw you protected it ;P
congrats though, happy your site got some attention!

@Riker It might need closing. :-(

:(
probably due to "too broad"?

Yes.
It's inviting loads of tiny answers.

Does anyone here know who Sir Walter Raleigh is and how he related to Shakespeare's times? </homeworkHelpRequest>

@Downgoat He's a person who explored.
Queen Elizabeth the First liked him quite a bit.

ok, so did he like do anything important?

@Downgoat Yes.
I'm trying to remember Primary School history lessons...

8:07 PM
I'm trying to run cd $1 in a bash program but it doesn't work when I provide it the correct args
But it works on tio

do you have shebang line?

I do now, but it still doesn't work

somebody help me! I'm trapped in tvtropes!

@muddyfish here, try looking at this instead: google.com/search?q=goat+memes

@Downgoat Oh. He was a person who /(re-)*/discovered America.

8:12 PM
ah ok thanks

@Downgoat -1. nswf

and did he like do anything relevant to shakespeare?

He tried to colonise the "New World" in the 1580s.

@muddyfish O_o not for me

He was executed.

8:12 PM
D:
oh no why

@Downgoat just includes the word "sexy" when describing goats

@Downgoat Treason against James I.

IMO this is not NSFW unless your boss is a goat
@wizzwizz4 :O what did he do
take away his goat? :'(

@Downgoat Tried to kill him, I think.

oh damn

8:15 PM
Oh. And nobody knows whether it was an actual plot or a fake.
Propaganda or proposed assasination.

ok well shit
this has nothing to do with shakespeare

Google is your friend

@Downgoat It influenced his works.

oh, can you give me a link I can copychange take reference from about that?

Why don't you make your own GH pages as a "legit" reference >_>

8:17 PM
@Downgoat There's a BBC iPlayer thing.

@Downgoat In node, do you know how to make a synchronous check for file existence?
apparently fs.exists(...) is deprecated

Cite that; it'll vanish in a few days.

@ConorO'Brien fs.statSync
though @ConorO'Brien what are you doing with file?
You should probably handle the error thrown by other sync functipn

@aditsu so in the youtube app?

yeah

8:21 PM
if(!fileName){
    err("no file passed");
} else if(!fs.exists(fileName)){
    err("no such file `" + fileName + "`");
}
prog = fs.readFileSync(fileName).toString();
statSync errors, tho. is there nothing that gives a boolean check?

if (you.isUsing(node.js)) you.life.rethink();
10

ha. haha. ha.

@ConorO'Brien oh, use fs.readFileSync and catch its ENOENT error (that's what you're supposed to do)

@Downgoat hm, okay.

I wrote most my 1000-word essay for school today, the day before we have to submit our work

8:33 PM
@KritixiLithos Well done.
Now write the rest of it instead of talking on TNB.

I wrote <20 words in the past weeks
@wizzwizz4 I think the reason I took a break from SE for almost 10 months was because it was interfering with my schoolwork :/

@KritixiLithos Ten...
faints

At least I've become a better golfer now :)

I accidentally clicked on the "atom" icon (text editor) five minutes ago and forgot about it. Until it just opened.

@ConorO'Brien I do that with other programs a lot.
Once I opened ~100 Google Earths.
Worst. Day. Ever.

8:44 PM
o_o

@Laikoni I just read your post about pointfree.io , but I found it doesn't work with list comprehensions f x = [k|k<-[1..]] !! x i.e. no output is generated, however f x = [1..] !! x works just fine.

Anonymous
@wizzwizz4 Wow, it only took a day to open and close 100 copies of Google Earth? How did you get access to a supercomputer?

@Mego Some hadn't properly opened yet.
It took about 7 minutes to enter the command to kill them.

Anonymous
Still, that's insanely fast for several copies of Google Earth

My cat does that
I was trying to play an fps, but my cat decided to get on my desk
I ended up rebinding all the functionality I could to my mouse so I could play with him sitting on my keyboard
He was pretty interested in me dying over and over

@MistahFiggins it didn't catch the mouse?
you had one job, cat

I was playing ratz instagib, so There were plenty rats on the screen... :)
I'm more worried about how interested he was in me dying...

(As we were on the topic of FPS death.)

@MistahFiggins go to google and type "cat secretly", see what suggestions come up :)

9:11 PM
The correct way to say it is "Actually, there is no answer to life"
lol "cat secretly barks"
"jerry secretly cat cheese"?
What even?

9:27 PM
How am I supposed to chat?

@aditsu 2 or 3 years old, not that much used memory
@MistahFiggins like you are now?

He got off my keyboard finally :)
Obviously

@MistahFiggins That looks like an extremely fluffy kitty

It's a well-known fact that penguins and cats are symbiotes

I have another 2, one has a sort of "pet squirrel" stuffed animal that he carries around everywhere :)

My cat doesn't like keyboards. But she watches when a video is playing.

@Mego Post a video of it; humans often can't tell the difference between adult and young penguins except by size, and it could well become viral.

Anonymous
@wizzwizz4 No, see, you have to golf the request

@MistahFiggins That link doesn't work.
Here; let me fix it for you.

Some aren't as cute...

@MistahFiggins It's adorable

@MistahFiggins They used Photoshop. You can see the line where they cut the cat's head.
In GIMP it would've been harder to see, if used properly.

9:36 PM
@TuxCopter what does "ns" mean in french, as an acronym?

Nothing AFAIK

@MistahFiggins You made a typo. That should say "do not view".

yes... Can't say I didn't warn you
Too late to edit now

@MistahFiggins what

Don't. why did I post that???

@Mego Stay away from my cat!

@TuxCopter hm. I was just viewing a tf2 match in french and saw that come up

Google decided that that was what others had searched for
@ConorO'Brien it means Nice Shot

9:43 PM
@MistahFiggins right, but the match was in french. and was in response to me saying "good job lol" (in french)

hmm...
maybe he was talking to someone else?

it could have moved from english to french and he could have ignored me, tho
yeah

9:48 PM
@Mego I found that today too...
Who linked to it?

This is how I solve 90% of my friend's code problems
"Hey can you come over? I'm having trouble"
"What does your code do?"
"Well its supposed to do blah blah but... ooooh. Thanks!"

You guys should check out 1000000000's really clever answer to the rise and reset sequence here. IMO it's a really good example of clever golfing in Brain-Flak and even if you don't understand the language I think it is really cool.

@wizzwizz4 Workplace HNQ post

@Mego I remember now... Thanks.
@MistahFiggins I had the impression that one of my friends was really, really, really good at programming until I realised that I was just doing that to them whilst they stayed almost completely silent.
I asked them for help, described the problem, found the solution, left, came back, thanked them, left again, then fixed it.

Fact: Having a pet to talk to vastly improves your coding ability when no one else is around
unless he sits on your keyboard
And tries to get your cursor

9:58 PM
@MistahFiggins I have Neko for that.
Cats like mini-cats more than cursors.
So if you've got mini-cat running away from cursor, cat stays away from it too.

I recently finished my Del|m|t interpreter, if anyone's interested. Waiting for Dennis to put it on TIO...

@MistahFiggins Do you want to ping him?

I did , in the TIO chat
How soon can I start posting answers with this language? Do I have to wait until there is an online interpreter? I assume not

10:11 PM
@MistahFiggins you can post answers whenever

@MistahFiggins You just have to wait until there is a public interpreter.

they're only competitive if they're posted after the last update you did to the code
@wizzwizz4 if it's on github, it's fine to post in

Thanks all. I'm going to post cat, Hello, world, etc in a bit

@muddyfish I think web.archive.org also counts.

yes, it only needs to be available (only needs to be free for Cops and Robbers)

10:13 PM
No quine yet though

@wizzwizz4 anywhere online with a trusted datestamp

You've gotta be kidding me.
I just heard a loud pop come out of my left speaker in my laptop.
And now no noise is coming out of that side.

I think you just blew your speaker m8

It wasn't even turned up! It was at two ticks. :I

@VoteToClose At "low volume", a pair of headphones that I once had access to created a ridiculously loud feedback loop when plugged into a Windows PC.

10:25 PM
@WheatWizard Without any Brain-Flak knowledge or an explanation, it just looks like a lot of brackets though...

Does Brain-Flak have more or less brackets than Lisp?

Ohhhhhhh goood good good. Apparently a reboot fixed it.
Because logic.
Driver fail.

@ATaco Brain-Flak has only brackets.

I maintain.

Command Line arguments add to your byte-count right?

10:27 PM
@Dennis I have plenty of brain-flak knowledge and it still just looks like a lot of brackets to me

@MistahFiggins Yes.

Thought so. Thanks

Although to be fair, even my own brain-flak code just looks like nonsense to me most of the time

I just found a 3-word google search which gave exactly one result.

A Googlewhack is a type of contest for finding a Google search query consisting of exactly two words without quotation marks, that returns exactly one hit. A Googlewhack must consist of two actual words found in a dictionary. A Googlewhack is considered legitimate if both of the searched-for words appear in the result page. For example, typing an asterisk (*) into the Google Search Bar turns up no results. Published googlewhacks are short-lived, since when published to a web site, the new number of hits will become at least two, one to the original hit found, and one to the publishing site. ...
