@wat Not too much in the main features, except that Octave is opensource and even slower than MATLAB. But not all MATLAB functions have been ported to Octave. But if you don't want to waste money (or do some pirating) Octave is a pretty good replacement=)

wat
@flawr kthx

@TuxCopter Night? It's only 11pm (UTC)!
Bye. *waves*

If you can put up the money, the way to go is wolfram mathematica

wat
@wizzwizz4 time zones.
@Pavel Just get a Raspberry Pi.

@trichoplax Pity. I planned on getting something done today, lol

wat
10:03 PM
I think it's cheaper than the software.

This is the best arbitrary software war.

wat
no, srsly
Raspberry pi includes Wolfram Mathematica
Or just grab a Raspbian image and put it in QEMU

@Pavel Keep in mind that mathematica has quite a different purpose.

Than matlab?
Really?

Yeah Mathematica is mostly focused on symbolic computation

10:06 PM
Yep, MATLAB is inteded for developing and testing numerical algorithms. It doesn't do any symbolic manipulation. The focus is on matrix computations.

MATLAB is more the engineery number cruncher
ninja'd partially

Or for developing number chrunching machines:)

Think "Matrix Laboratory" rather than "Mathematics Laboratory"

Everyone I've met who is seriously using MATLAB uses it for the devlopment, but for actual usage the developed programs are mostly ported to Fortran or C

@El'endiaStarman also notalwaysright.com/not-very-open-minded-part-14/49972 and there are frighteningly many other stories like that :p

10:09 PM
It is just a very convenient Sandbox for playing around with matrices. It has a great development/debugging/profiling tools. And the built in routines like fft or matrix solver are almost unbeatable. But as soon as you add some MATLAB code it gets very slow=)

But... Mathematica has matrices...

So does Maple.
Oh, and TI-Basic.
Let's not forget Maxima.
And Processing I think too.

And NT's MS-DOS Batch.

and MATL!!! :)

Q: Play the sound of Pi

sagikspYup, you read the title right. play the sound of pi. More specifically, for every digit of pi in the first 1000, map it to a musical note and output the resulting melody to a file. Example melody showing first 100 digits: http://vocaroo.com/i/s0cfEILwYb8M Basically, each digit turns to a note ...

Q: Contiguous Block Count

GarethCount the number of contiguous blocks within a given 3D input. Input The input will consist of one or more rectangles of characters separated by blank lines. Each rectangle represents a cross section of the 3D space. The characters used will be 0, representing empty space, and 1 representing a ...

10:20 PM
I think there's an issue with my GIF encoder.
2

That... is an understatement.
It looks like you're adding the wrong number to a counter somewhere in the RLE system.

Hah...

That's what It's supposed to look like.

I think it's the RLE system.
Couldn't you just hardcode the values?
Or is it general-purpose?

General Purpose.

10:22 PM
Oh. :-/

wat
This is a thing now

I think it might be an issue in how I'm encoding the width and height.

@wat You could also use Mathematica online?

wat
@flawr costs money

You can't transfer the license from raspberry pi

10:23 PM
@wat really?

@wat no it doesn't

I thought there was a free version.

wat
@Pavel you can use qemu to execute the raspberry pi OS image that includes it

There is a free version now

wat
idk but last time I saw it, the page said you needed a subscription
that was only a couple of days ago

10:24 PM
All you need to do is sign in with a wolfram account

@wat Not the sort of thing you post on the internet...
But... it is for educational porpoises...

wat
@wizzwizz4 why not?
I own a Raspberry Pi.

@wat Some people (read: employers) might think that that is not a good thing to do.
But then again, you probably wouldn't want to work for an employer who didn't agree with what you do.

wat
...
why not?

Hmm, From w69h69 and higher it starts to stop working...

10:26 PM
@ATaco Eeeyup. :P

For whatever reason.

@wat I don't know why not.

wat
it's a little like emulating a agame when you have a physical copy

Some people are in such great demand that they get to pick and choose.

derps

wat
10:27 PM
for example I bought Pokemon FireRed so I could emulate it legally
@ThomasWard thanks I guess\

@wat It's technically not legal unless you dump the ROM yourself.

@wat hm? oh.

wat
@wizzwizz4 ...

In some places.

right. that flag.

wat
10:27 PM
Didnt know that

lurks quietly

wat
@ThomasWard yeah
@ThomasWard mmmkay

Lurking is fun!

wat
@wizzwizz4 have you ever reddit

@wat No.

wat
10:29 PM
@wizzwizz4 mk

I thought people could see lurkers...
I was wrong, it seems.

@wat you're welcome, either way.
returns to the shadows of Charcoal HQ

Well, judging by the fact that it seems to know it's a 70x70 gif, I don't think the encoding of the image size is the issue.

wat
i did a reddit

Oh, Yeah I see where my error is.
Begin Angry Debugging

10:42 PM
Does anyone know where you can downlaod pokemon uranium?

@Pavel sec

skype for business window needs to be >600 pixels to show timestamps
i feel triggered

'cause virustotal has been rather depressing for me today.

Thanks

10:43 PM
@ATaco Are you working on LZW compression?

Yep.
Basically this makes me want to cry.

@ATaco Haha, I feel ya.

@wat um...

Whoever wrote the spec for this needs a good slapping.

wat
@ThomasWard ye

10:45 PM
yeah...

@ATaco: Excerpt from an email I sent them almost a year ago:

That said, I'd like to note that there *was* one error that took me quite some time to figure out. Near the bottom on this page, where you talk about encoding the codes to bytes.

http://www.matthewflickinger.com/lab/whatsinagif/lzw_image_data.asp

In particular, these two sentences:

"If you see at Step 6 of the encoding, we added a code of #7 to our code table. This is our clue to increase our code size because 7 is equal to 2^3-1 (where 3 is our current code size). Thus, the next code we write out, #2, will use the new code si

No.

wat
@Pavel y

You seem to have an affinity for shady-looking urls

What language was that written in Starman?

wat
10:46 PM
@Pavel it is a magnet link
to a torrent

I know that much, and wasn't talking about it.

wat
@ATaco sorry replied to wrong person

I was referring to the discussion we're having about gifs and their stupid encoding method.

@ATaco Python.

ah

10:48 PM
Should be obvious what it does though.

Torrents count as shady-looking

wat
@Pavel Meh.
got the link from here

I guess that doesn't count as shady looking?

I suppose not

wat
Just a reddit post nothing to see here

10:54 PM
Why are torrents shady-looking? P2P is a legit way to transfer large amounts of data. Not just pirated information is distributed in that manner

Yeah, but you might not be getting what you think you're getting.

Actually, with Torrents you usually are.
Unless the source file being shared is wrong, a peer cannot feed you wrong information.

@Pavel The same can be said for literally any file you download
unless you always compare checksums/file hashes/etc

@ATaco Really? I seem to have a misunderstanding of how torrents work.

A Torrent, as it's name implies, is a file which is downloaded from multiple sources at the same time. Called, "Peers", anyone who's already downloaded the file can then seed the file for others to download it from them. You only ever download a single part from a single source, rarely the entire file, so if one person tries to insert anything malicious, not only would it just corrupt the file, but it wouldn't pass the automatic checksum, which rejects it anyway.

10:59 PM
More relevant is the fact that that link is outdated.

Is it just me, or is the esolangs wiki down rn?
Related: Can someone link the github page for the language 7, if it exists?

ERROR: ESOLANGSOVERFLOW
4
Yes it seems to be down=)

esolangs is kill.

@MistahFiggins wiki seems to be down, yes

According to isup.me, down for everyone.

11:10 PM
also 7 isn't on github, but I think the host for the interpreter + docs is nonetheless up
give me a moment to find a link

@El'endiaStarman Hey, errors need to be in bold!

I've been meaning to write a page for RProgN on Esolangs, but I can't for the life of me think of the right way to word it.

@flawr please put that in code block.
Thank you.

@flawr Kinda obnoxious here though.

I hate it when i get Code Block'd

11:11 PM
@El'endiaStarman That is the point XD

... Everything's down...

Imagine there was a way to colour the chat messages here :)

Not another DNS DDOS, I hope!

The pokemon uranium running animation is crap.

@MistahFiggins this 7 interpreter in Perl is the official one; additionally, if you run perldoc on it you'll get the language's documentation

11:12 PM
Loud Screaming

(which is embedded in the source)

I'm getting a 404 on that link

@ais523 "404 not found"

@ATaco ?

@flawr Suspensions, suspensions everywhere!
5

11:13 PM
Everything is down.

@Pavel No you're not. It can't find it.

err, whoops
I edited the link to fix it
try again

@ATaco Only some things, it seems. For example, microsofttranslator.com is down, but bing.com/translate isn't.

@wizzwizz4 Wouldn't be surprised if they just killed it, tbh.

But they've renamed the service back to Microsoft Translator...

11:16 PM
Eh...

@El'endiaStarman Speaking of suspensions: Did you ever notice the differential bar on the rocker bogie suspension of the recent rovers NASA sent on missions?

Doesn't microsofttranslator.com just redirect to bing.com/translate?

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

F1KrazyFlashing Rainbow Text code-golf The other day, I remembered a program I'd written in C# a while back for fun. It takes a string as input, then outputs that same string, cycling through a rainbow of colours. I've been lurking on PPCG for a while and thought it might make a fun challenge, so I go...

@flawr Err...no.

@Fatalize to be honest my answer was more of a statement than an answer.
my 64-bit RSA answer was fun though, and got cracked :)

11:17 PM
Who's getting suspended?

@El'endiaStarman Basically a mechanism to "average" all 6 wheels! alicesastroinfo.com/2012/07/…

@Pavel Sort of... It also has a few other pages, e.g. the service for translating URLs is hosted there.

@Pavel Currently, nobody.

Yet...

Why are we talking about suspensions then?

11:18 PM
Foreshadowing...
*does sinister things*

6 mins ago, by El'endia Starman
@flawr Suspensions, suspensions everywhere!
@flawr Oh that's cool.

But... why?

@Pavel Because of me, but does it really matter? I think continuously asking about suspensions is not gonna prevent anyone from getting suspended, quite in the contrary...

Good point.

[blink]Suspensions![/blink]

11:25 PM
@El'endiaStarman To an infinite degree! >:D
(sorry, felt a need to state that xD)

was suspended for thinking about circumventing suspensions
unsuspended wizzwizz4
I'm certain that last part isn't meant to be possible whilst I'm suspended, but -.(o.o).-
CMC: Find the message that means:
> Die brennenden Stuhl
in the last few days of TNB chat messages.

Anyone know why random sites are currently kill?
Uh, were, randomly kill?

but they are things that do happen occasionally
we haven't had a rift in the Internet for a while
that said, I don't think there is one; if there is, it's recent and between Verizon and Level3
hmm, looking into the stats more deeply, ⅛ of that traffic is being lost, which is way too much for two of the largest Internet providers in the world
my guess is that there's a rift not between Verizon and Level3 specifically, but one of their major customers

Do you think now would be a good time to introduce an alternative internet protocol?
Alternative to IP, that is.

11:44 PM
I feel like it may take a while to transition from a system of internet communication that's been around as long as internet communication.

@ATaco Yeah...

"You remember how you used to connect using either UDP or TCP?" "Yeah..." "Well now don't."

We've sort of gotten from ipv4 to ipv6
3

I'm still amazed by how long Fax held up as a means of communciation in businesses.

@flawr Past tense? It's still being used.

11:51 PM
@wizzwizz4 I stand corrected^^
This is quite cool:

@flawr Why is "League of Legends" on there?

@flawr That isn't a "stalk your favourite artist" site, is it?

No
You type in a name
And it tells you other similar artists
I literally just found a new artist I like a few seconds ago

@Pavel Since not everything has converted to ipv6 yet, we might end up with a compromise: ipv5

MDK is best artist. Official.

11:57 PM
@Pavel He's on Soundcloud

I don't actually soundcloud...
I just use youtube to mp3
