@Fatalize In graduate programs in the US, students who are able to get a stipend for being a teaching or research assistant (not all of them get that opportunity) get an income that puts them below the federal poverty line
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Pro tip: You should probably have something more sustaining than a Pop-Tart for lunch. It'll spike your blood sugar so you'll feel less hungry, but it doesn't provide any actual nutrition.
@Fatalize half of it is from my state (general scholarship based on high school performance), half of it is from my university (as a result of the National Merit Scholarship program).
I was extremely fortunate that my parents started saving money to put me through college when I was born. I only spent two years in university (two were taxpayer funded years at a community college) so their funds plus help from my grandparents paid the tuition, and I was working the whole time so I could pay for food, housing, etc. I made it out without debt, which I think is really uncommon anymore.

America is currently undergoing a demographic wealth distribution crisis (and I'm not talking about the 1% thing). As in, if you compare the net worth of different generations, a 25-year-old today has less "real value" than a 25-year-old had last decade.
