Q: Golf a string twister

J AtkinHow strings are twisted The twisting algorithm is very simple. Each column is shifted down by its index (col 0 moves down 0, col 1 moves 1, ...). The column shift wraps to the top. no big surprise

We're all still here just waiting silently

@trichoplax For what?

I'm waiting for Geobits to make a joke

@Rainbolt To star it?

New Main Post? New Sandboxed Post? Daily Discord Chat? Alex Being Wrong?... ah someone already answered that.

I don't make jokes, I find them. You guys aren't being funny enough yet.

That sounds very Shakespearian

And here goes the stars !

Wow, that was easy.

I said this as a joke. Never expected it to turn out to be true...

I thought you were about to say "I said this as a joke. Got zero stars :("

Lol definitely wasn't expecting stars for it :)

Quick question: My dog has found some fleas recently, and they're being a pain in the ass. Does anyone know if diatomaceous earth actually works? It sounds kinda like one of those "super non-toxic home remedies" that isn't going to work at first glance.

I'd go with a toxic remedy

Dad always dipped our dog when it got fleas. But we had likes ten ranch dogs so it made the process of filling up a tub full of whatever worth it.
And it always worked
Tub full of water -> mix in pyrethrin dip (you can buy it at wal mart) -> submerge all but the dog's head and hold him there for a while
And do NOT do it inside

3:35 PM
Hmm. My main issue isn't really the fleas on the dog. I can kill those. It's the ones in the house/yard that I'm having trouble eradicating.
Their life cycle is irritatingly resilient.

If you keep the dog out of the house and yard all the fleas will die out within 6 months

>_>

@trichoplax do you really think it's a possible solution?

Yeah, I have no idea how a parasite evolved to be so persistent - you'd think they'd need a host...

Ok, pup. Time to go live on the roof for a few months! :D
2

3:36 PM
@Katenkyo It's a guaranteed solution, it's just horribly impractical

@trichoplax that's what i meant when I (implicitly) said it wasn't possible. At this point, you could just say you're leaving your dog

@trichoplax I hear bedbugs are worse, and can sometimes go a bit over a year without feeding.

Cast Path to Exile, targeting Geobits's dog. In six months, cast Pull from Eternity, targeting Geobits's dog.

@Geobits I thought only things like alligator or so didn't have to be fed for an extended amount of time Oo

@Rainbolt And I even get a basic land as a bonus. Nice!

3:39 PM
@Rainbolt You must start the game first.

The game is neverending.

@Geobits But shuffling your library could be a pain in the ass if you have a lot of books

Lol

I lost most of my books to a fire hose a couple years back. Mostly Kindle now.

@Geobits It should end someday.

Sorin Markov is a couple thousand years old, and still quite young

Lord DeRosso is a couple thousand years old, too.

I've never heard of this game, "Bravely Default"

@Rainbolt It's one of the sweetest RPG that came out in the past few years
The second opus (Bravely Second) is about to come out in Europe
@Geobits Oh... I feel pretty sad for you there. I have (and will) always preferred paper over numerical books

@Katenkyo I do, too, for the most part. It would be quite expensive to replace them all at this point, though.
Kindle is quite nice for traveling, though.

@Geobits Haha, I agree, if mine was about to burn, It would cost me a few thousands to replace it...
(I think I would lie down on the floor while crying)

3:47 PM
Yea, the only ones left were the ones scattered around the house. The area I actually had shelves full got drenched :(
My kid's room was spared, though, so all his books were fine.

@Geobits being lazy about putting them back on the shelves actually saved some ^^

@Geobits I, inversely, have a lot of books.

@ՊՓԼՃՐՊՃՈԲՍԼ hi

hey, just found out something pretty interesting: https://github.com/martinkirsche/wired-logic
that could be a pretty interesting basis for challenges :)

4:13 PM
@zyabin101 you can do that almost perfectly with long programs

@randomra Then limit the script size to, say, 1024 bytes. Or for a challenge, 50 or 100 bytes.
@ՊՓԼՃՐՊՃՈԲՍԼ 11 stars!
12 stars!

@SirDarius It reminds me of this game.

@Zgarb On my PC, it's very slooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo‌oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow. Time to switch into Powder Toy.

yet it's quite different, wired-logic is about writing "programs" as an image, and the output is an animated gif :)

4:25 PM
Wired-logic more similar to wireworld.

I'm going about a series of Yu-Gi-Oh cards based on actual PPCG users. Who would follow it?

i think the response you're likely to get here is "MTG or go home"
i don't have a horse in this race, i haven't played magic in ages

@undergroundmonorail Why are people loving Magic instead of Yu-Gi-Oh?

my guess is because it's a better game ;) i'm jk i actually don't even know how to play ygo

5:01 PM
@zyabin101 Different tastes, I guess. It's usually marketed to an older audience than Yu-Gi-Oh's, so maybe that's why as well

Anonymous
MtG's rules make sense. YGO's rules are a clusterfuck.

I personally enjoy Magic more than I enjoyed YGO back when I was playing it - more depth, from what I've found
Although that was a long time ago

MTG has over 2000 rules though, and five levels of judges

i'd argue "MtG's rules are consistent" is more accurate than "makes sense"

Anonymous
Sure, but they're consistent and logical

5:03 PM
to a certain extent they make sense but very few people actually understand them completely
i've done judge qualification practice testing (for fun, not with any desire to become a judge) and that shit's fuckin' hard

The good thing is, they mostly don't have to. Playing with my friends, the house-made ruling that made sense to us usually wasn't very far from the way the rules actually worked

Anonymous
YGO requires constant official arbitration every time new cards are released because the rules are incapable of describing a unique, consistent outcome for every card interaction.

Except in really complicated situations, mind you

@Roujo If you play with modern cards, that's almost always the case
They know how to word cards such that the logical conclusion is mostly the right one

@Rainbolt Yup, and that's the point ^^

Anonymous
5:05 PM
The rules are either like "i dunno man" or "one of these 3 things happens"

I'm going about a series of Magic: the Gathering cards based on actual PPCG users. ʘ_͝ʘ Who would follow it?

@zyabin101 I would ^^

I'd be interested in a YGO series as well, although less so since I don't play anymore

Depends on the order played

@undergroundmonorail Fun happens! =D

Actually I don't think the order matters

Type changing effect from Opalescence applies in layer 4.
Ability losing effect from Humility happens in layer 6.
Power and toughness setting effect from Humility applies in layer 7b.
Result: Every enchantment is a 1/1 with no abilities.

Humility loses it's ability before we get to 7b
Now I don't know

why do you care dawg

survey: when playing mafia, do you lynch the player with the majority (51% or more), or with the most votes?

would it be fun to make cards with ppcg users? iff so, do it

Anonymous
@NathanMerrill Most votes

5:12 PM
Most votes BUT it's very important that "no lynch" is a valid vote target

Anonymous
Well, actually, it depends

I'm assuming most vanilla possible rules

Anonymous
I've played IRL games where there's a distinct voting period, and at the end of it, player with most votes gets lynched

I do most votes, but apparently mafiascum (top mafia site) does majority
but it sounds like most votes is preferred
how do you guys handle ties?
neither?

Anonymous
5:13 PM
And I've also played IRC games where voting can happen anytime, and it's the first player to majority (or no lynch if enough people vote NL that a single player cannot have a majority)

@Mego I don't want an infinite voting round

Anonymous
For ties, either run-off voting or flip a coin/die roll

bots don't get impatient
what do you mean by "run-off"?

Top two vote off I think

Anonymous
Everybody votes among the tied players

5:14 PM
Couldn't that still result in a tie?

Anonymous
Possibly

Votes are 5 4 3, so we vote off against the 5 and the 4 (and the guy who got 3 is safe). They tie again at 6 6

Anonymous
If it doesn't reduce the number of options, go random

Anonymous
5 4 3 isn't a tie

Oh, I know!
Introduce a Seer, who can predict the death of tied votes
You have to add another "head's down" moment though

5:16 PM
I think I'm going to do no-lynch

Anonymous
Run-off voting is used for games where you lynch the person with the most votes

I guess that doesn't work if your Seer dies

The ways I play:
- The day doesn't end until everyone's voted. If there's a tie, you wait.
- The day is a fixed length of time (usually it's actually 24 hours). If there's a tie, all tied for the top spot die. This is almost always bad for the village so it's an incentive to get their shit together, but also makes for interesting counterplay where mafia can try to keep the votes near a tie and tie it up just before the clock strikes. I've been the mafioso for that and it was Good Times

thanks guys

Anonymous
So if you had 5 5 2, you'd do a runoff between the 5's. If they were still tied, a random one dies.

5:17 PM
wait, multiple votes is bad for the village?

Multiple deaths is bad

wouldn't no votes be bad for the village?

Anonymous
If you had 3 3 3 1, and after the first runoff you had 4 4 2, you'd do another runoff between the 4s

Anonymous
(or roll at that point)

It's really unlikely that you hit two mafia, so a tied vote is almost always a second (untargeted) mafia kill.

5:18 PM
So, I'm still taking definitions for my Magic series based on PPCG users. Who is following it? (Not Rainbolt, he definitely doesn't know anything about Area 51. Roujo is the only follower currently.)

> Rainbolt doesn't know about Area 51
Sure thing, 39 network rep :P

@undergroundmonorail right, but the majority of games the villagers don't ever know who the mafia is
so shooting around in the dark is better than a guaranteed night villager kill

Define "follow". Look at when I get to work in the morning: sure, count me in.

I can't play Mafia right now, because I'm too young.

My partner was narrating a game once and he said something like "An old lady was ripped to shreds by a Werewolf." and he was talking about my grandmother. To this day she let's him have it for calling her an old lady.

Anonymous
How are your townies losing with a cop and doc in 7p2m? Are they licking the windows instead of hunting mafia?

Anonymous
With that kind of town power, the mafia should never win

it only slightly favors the townies
the turn 1 cop declare can be countered with another cop declare

Anonymous
5:24 PM
You don't declare cop unless you have a maf read

which is easy if you are a mafia

Anonymous
Then you lynch the maf read, and if they flip town you lynch the "cop"

right, you have two mafia
first one declares cop turn 2 or so
lynches the other mafia
everybody trusts you

Anonymous
Then the real cop would counter-claim

kill away :)

5:25 PM
My first game on the site I used to play on was based on Skies of Arcadia.

I was on one of the two mafia teams. Everyone had a certain amount of gold with which to upgrade their ship and buy items. The normal rules were all there: Village votes to lynch, mafia gets a kill, etc. But also *every player* had their own ship that could attack others. In the same way a vig often gets a following that works together to hide the vig's identity, we had squads that would work on their builds together and then choose someone to all attack that night and almost certainly kill, and losing any one of th

Anonymous
So you'd end up lynching one of the cop claims, 50/50 maf

but the cop investigates in the night

If you actually think through the entire game with logic then it becomes about as pointless as playing War with cards

Anonymous
I mean one of the two people claiming to be cops

And these weren't like 7p2m or whatever, these were like 40-50 player games

Anonymous
5:27 PM
The only way mafia can get away with claiming cop is if they kill the real cop the first night, and they have no way of knowing if they did or if the cop is just staying undercover

@Mego in larger games, that's true, but 7 people isn't that many
also, the Doctor prevents lynching

@NathanMerrill I have played a lot of this gametype, Mego has the strat down

Anonymous
The doctor prevents nightkills, not lynches

it's not even really that fun of a gametype any more because the strategy is so set in stone that you rarely get a chance to deviate
imo of course

Anonymous
That's why I like to mix it up with fun roles

5:30 PM
@Mego then that is why you are getting townie wins

Anonymous
Godfather: mafia that cops get a town result on

A really fun PR that only works online (real time games, not forum) is someone who, each night, may choose someone to arm. That person gets a gun that must be fired or the day won't end. At any point in the day, they choose a target, and bang. They are dead, immediately. No second chances, no last words. The day does not end. The shooter's identity is not revealed. Enjoy the paranoia :)

I played a variation back in college that was built into a custom Warcraft III map -- one of the villagers would turn into a werewolf during the night cycle. The werewolf had ridiculous stats and was tasked with destroying buildings, killing sheep, etc. If the werewolf was able to find and kill a villager, that villager would turn into another werewolf two nights later. Every daybreak was a vote to find the werewolf.

I forget the flavour but I once played as someone who could visit another player in the night. I could talk to them but they didn't know my identity, and anything else they were supposed to be able to do (talk to teammates, take actions) couldn't be done. Pretty fun.

I've heard of games like this, that are fun to hear about but sound like they would just be frustrating to play: No mafia, host rolls a die to choose who croaks. Town wins if they figure out that they're being fucked with before the game is over.

Hah.
That's evil.
