5:00 AM
BREAKING NEWS: MATH MAJOR MANDATORY

Haha justice at last!

My first act as President. Then I'll worry about the jellyfish.
You'd vote for me, right?

Without question.

As far as I know, more people would vote for me than wouldn't. I now have an adequate sample size.

I have a feeling that's an extremely biased sample and is not representative of the overall population.
But objectively... you're right.

5:04 AM
What, 1 math major who frequently removes bytes from code to acquire useless internet points is biased?! How?!

The bias is simply due to your sampling scheme. Internet points, though imaginary but desirable, do not affect your sample bias.

It's like money, but worth less. And worthless.
Hmm... Maybe if I sampled everybody at PPCG?
I must find the dimensions of their heads!

Psst, everybody hide! BrainSteel wants to measure our heads...

I said it was for science...

I'm going to go to sleep. Please don't come to my house and measure my head while I sleep. Boundaries...

5:09 AM
Gah! You sound just like my ex girlfriend.

Hahaha

Goodnight. I should probably sleep too. It's past midnight.

:O
Central time

Indubitably.

Goodnight! Nice chatting with you.

5:10 AM
This seems to happen a lot :P

What?

Everybody but us leaving chat under mysterious circumstances and us chatting about random crap :D

Haha yes, that does seem to happen very often.

Anyway, 'twas nice. I'll talk to ya again sometime, probably rather soon.

I have a feeling Geobits is just watching, reading, biding his time... Waiting to strike.
Rather soon indeed. Cheerio, old chap.

5:11 AM
Dun DUN... Dun DUN... Dun DUN dun DUN dun DUN...

2 hours later…
6:47 AM
@MartinBüttner seen this sub.blue ?
Also, 100+ bronze medals :D

7:20 AM
wow its quiet in here

I think I'm going to go over the 30k char limit for BBBF :(
The minified snippet is around 20k chars

better post the controller as Code-Golf

tips for golfing this controller sub 15K

Golfing the spec will be is easier. English golf

could you compress the code, and have it decompress and run itself?
or is that not a thing in browsers and such?
(I do not JavaScript)

7:37 AM
Maybe, I've still got at least 5k chars to finish the spec. I'll try to keep it verbose.

I got an upvote for my new question while it has only 1 view. Is that possible? (without someone testing spambots?)

Q: Sum in each dimension

user23013You are given a multi-dimensional array of integers. Each dimension has a fixed size (so that it would be always rectangular if it is 2D). Your program should calculate the sums in each dimension and append the sums as the new last items in that dimension. Assume the input and output arrays are ...

i am viewing it right now
i did not upvote
still says 1 view
so if I upvote, you have 2 votes in 1 view :P
now

The upvote counter automatically updates but I don't think the view counter does. (when you're viewing the question I mean) This may be related

i reloaded twice

Probably SE server caching

Who's in for some ASCII Art Chinese Shrines ?

anyway I got that vote 7 seconds after posting the question. Still suspicious..

@Optimizer amazing, thanks! (I think I'd seen the Faberge Fractals before, but not the rest)
@Calvin'sHobbies you can always host the controller externally and embed it

there's a video up there where he shows his tool where he creates those 3d ones

8:03 AM
@MartinBüttner how long do I have to wait till it refreshes the cache and updates ?
I am pretty sure there is an updated answer

I'd recommend just waiting and trying over and over again.

And it would say "no" -.-

I think it would be identical to shouldiblamecaching.com

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

Super ChafouinSnake vs labyrinth Write a program that takes as input a text file representing a labyrinth and checks if this labyrinth can be entirely filled with a snake path. The program should output true or 1 if this is the case, false or 0 else. The snake can enter the labyrinth at any point. He can mov...

8:57 AM
Are the construction details along with the examples enough for the Chinese Shrine ASCII Art ?

9:43 AM

That's Jon Skeet for you.
@MartinBüttner I feel like keeping all series posts in a single sandbox is getting very less attention. Do you feel the same about your ROGD ?

yeah, that's why I poke people in here every time I update it. still, I prefer it to occupying half the first sandbox page with separate questions, and it's nice to have everything in one place, so I can quickly refer to previous instalments when writing new ones

hmm. poking is fine then , I guess.
@MartinBüttner any comments about the construction of Chrinese Shrine before I post it ?

ehm, looks good, but I can't tell if it's completely unambiguous without trying (which I don't have time for right now)

okay, I have explained it a bit more and posting now.

Q: ASCII Art of the Day #3 - Chinese Shrines

OptimizerIn today's episode of AAOD, we are going to construct a Chinese Shrine of varying heights. Consider the following examples for height (N) 1 to 6 N = 1: . | . ]#[ . \_______/ . ]###[ . \____]#.-.#[____/ |__|__| |__|__| |__|__|_|__|__| ######/_\###...

huh , so what , reputation are to be rewarded all bitcoins ?

11:08 AM

nothing important , but i still like this place , u wont get loads of emo-based downvotes for any serious work you do

11:45 AM
If I want to use Java as my controller code for the next Koth, I should include the .jar, correct?
an executable jar

12:03 PM
well sure, although I'm quite sure most people have/can install JDK
I personally installed a portable JDK on a school computer to my network drive ^^

12:31 PM
Every once and a while (aka too often), I find a software review that has a good star rating but a pretty negative description.
Today I saw something along the lines of "4/5 stars. It worked great, the only thing I didn't like was that it installed some other software without permission and pinned it to my taskbar."

@NathanMerrill I've only used Java for my koth controllers, but never included the jar. Nobody's requested one so far, but I guess it couldn't hurt.

@Geobits good to know, thanks

1:04 PM
fractals subreddit is soo dead

Maybe it's just between iterations.

then its definitely rendering on a very slow computer

quick question for the pythonistas in here: PyUnit or py.test? (and why)

PyPy
CPython
CoPy ?

1:24 PM
@MartinBüttner where do you share links that they get 300+ unique IP visits ?

reddit and hacker news

any particular subreddit ?
like you got it for languages through years too
and you got the gold one for voronoi image map..

usually programming, and maybe a cross post on a specifically relevant subreddit. I posted voronoi on programming and DSP. programming languages through the years only on programming I think. lab rat race on MachineLearning and genetic algorithms (not on programming).

I see.
mbue :D
you failed at golfing it further ?

any shorter and many sites don't accept it or it's already taken

2:17 PM
@NathanMerrill Good things happen when you make the source available too, instead of just the jar.
@Geobits No, we didn't kill them all. The Council voted overwhelmingly to destroy Earth and wipe out the zombie pirates, but due to a bug in user12345's code, the moon was destroyed instead.

Well that sucks. Without a moon, we have no werewolves, so that's one less anti-zombie weapon.

2:36 PM
I have bookmarked that message so that in a year I can call upon Martin to edit it with whatever planet I really want destroyed.
Oh, I know
What if I use the winning Wolf from survival game to help fight off the zombie pirates?
No wait
I need to make a challenge where people program the zombies first
and then we'll have a dance off

I was thinking about doing zombie tag at some point, but never did.

Taaaaaggggg. Yoooooou aaaarrreee iiiiiiittttt.

Seems like a good candidate for a snippet-koth. Give a movement function for a human and a function to use when you turn.

I'm guessing human moves very fast and zombies are trying to checkmate him?

Something like that. Start with some dumb zombies to get the ball rolling.

2:41 PM
Seems like a solved case

Hmm, good point. Would have to impose some additional mechanics.

I hate when people address solved challenges with "Oh, I'll make it random then." We can do better

Yea, I definitely didn't mean random :P

Just nipping it in the butt (bud? I've never known what the phrase was)
Even Google doesn't know

I've heard both, but probably bud more often. Probably regional.

2:44 PM
"Now, obviously biting someone in the posterior would probably halt unwanted behavior, but the actual saying is "nip it in the bud." Nipping something while it's a bud means that it cannot grow into something more offensive."

Did you just link a dating website? :D

Had it bookmarked

Would varying the zombies' speed based on hunger work? Specifically hungry=fast. My gut says not really, but...

Hmmm... so sacrificing some of your own might actually help a select few survive longer?
Also probably solved, but I bet it's hard enough to solve that it would be worth posting

Hadn't thought of it that way. I guess that depends on how many you have in your group.

2:49 PM
Oh duh. I got it
Just put all the groups on the same map
Then you have to behave reactively

Well yea ;)
A bigass torus map

Hiding behind other groups only works until you are all in the same group. Then the horde will be after your big group
I think we should try this

My js sucks, so if I do it I'm going to have to steal most of CH's code :D

I already have a map that renders to HTML
I see no reason to port to a language that runs even slower

I kinda like the idea of having it all run in a snippet. Either works, but this seemed ideal for it.

2:52 PM
And this guy even managed to identify each group by color, which I think is pretty cool: codegolf.stackexchange.com/a/25555/18487
Oh, CH's controller can actually run on site?

Yep, like the red/blue one he did also.

That is cool. I have work to do if I want to match that
I have code for interacting with Stack Exchange API, but it's written in JavaScript. I'd love to learn how to connect to it in Java.

I think there's a library for that on stackapps. Haven't tried it out, but I was thinking about it at some point.

Judging by this class, it looks like you just make a web request and get back JSON. All of the libraries just parse the JSON. It's like someone writing a query for you. Not sure how useful that is, unless you want to know the same thing that they want to know.
The examples are nice to follow

3:08 PM
Yea, I guess that makes sense. Still, it saves a bit of boring parser writing.

I'm not adept at JSON, so it would cost me some time, but anyone who is adept at understanding JSON and knows how to do it in Java should be able to do it very quickly
From what I hear, it isn't much more complicated than using an object. myObject.name becomes myJsonObject.getString("name");
But maybe I am way oversimplifying things and it isn't that easy

Nah, it's pretty easy. But if it's already done, that's even easier ;)

Hey guys... of all things, why am I a goose?

Because you want to grow down instead of growing up?

3:30 PM
I didn't mean to make you question your existence!

3:58 PM
Technically my identity as a waterfowl. I would still exist.
I'll probably be a goose forever, especially since Optimizer posted that picture of the llama and goose. How can I go back knowing that my (apparently) spirit animal is kicking it with Optimizer on a farm?

Because you don't want CH to eat you?

Hm. Fair point.
Well, technically CH is a boy and a tiger. If anything the tiger would go after the boy before it would seek out a goose. The boy is an easier target since he can't fly.

No, he's a boy with severe imagination overload. He'll murder the goose and blame the tiger, but it was the boy all along.

... O_O

Reading the comics with that firmly in mind is strange for some of them.

4:07 PM
Stick with me, Alex, children don't like Lemons

@VisualMelon Pretty sure geese don't like lemons either, but I accept your offer anyway.

Hmm, my kid does, but he may be an outlier. He also likes broccoli and peas.

@Geobits Is that in any way surprising?
Smart kid, broccoli is awesome.

@AlexA. Not really :D

ppl talk bulky loads of crap here

4:09 PM
I don't think he's had goose, though, so I couldn't say what his stance on that is.

@AbdouAbdou: What's your point? :P
@Geobits Pretty sure only imaginary tigers eat goose... right? :|

4:24 PM
I have a couple cats, and I'm sure they would try...
Also, I love lemons.

He has melons, not lemons

Are his lemons solemn?
We just demo'd a change to a customer, and boy am I glad I didn't click on this dropdown...
First, Second, Third, "Onward!", Fith

4:41 PM
no spell check in IDE ?

Visual Studio doesn't help much with spelling. I wish it did. That'd be cool.
I can't tell you how annoying it is to see a variable named "Latancy".

@Rainbolt have you done unit testing in Python?
(or anyone else, but I know you've used Python)

4:57 PM
@MartinBüttner I have.

@MartinBüttner I've done unit testing in C# using NUnit
Not in Python
Also watched a few Pluralsight videos on how to write unit testable code
I can't say I am a unit testable code veteran though. I still have to refactor a lot when I go back and write tests.

I hate tests like smallpox. Pile on the scorn now if you must.

Oh, I misread "(or anyone else, but I know you've used Python)" as "(or anything else, but I know you've used Python)"
So that's why I went on about C#

5:40 PM
@ProgramFOX I need to pick a testing framework for a project. Any comments on pyunit vs py.test?

well, I've only used pytest
so I can't give comments on pyunit
pytest is nice

@MartinBüttner I've heard good things about nose

6:01 PM
it's a shame that CJam is ahead J in "Sum in each dimension"
Mathematica solution is pretty neat though :)

Q: Ticker feeds in Chat

Hosch250The ticker feeds in chat are interesting, but also annoying. One feature that would make them very nice is a face feature, where they fade away after displaying for N seconds (perhaps even user adjustable). As an example of this, I didn't clear my ticker for a while, and this is what I got:

Sorry, wrong link.

@Rainbolt The question was never whether I should include the source, but whether I should include the jar

Yea, definitely include the source either way :)

@NathanMerrill I meant "too" like "in addition to"

I didn't realize that "too" meant anything else :P
nevermind, thought of another definition

6:32 PM
It means too many things, really (well, two to my knowledge).

silly english, where every word is either a homonym, a homophone, or has multiple definitions

The best words fit all those categories :)

7:00 PM
A language without words that have multiple meanings is a language without puns.

no, puns have degraded to where even sound-a-like words work

Tried to come up with punny response. Only found this:

Made my day. Hope it makes someone else's too.

reminds me of "what happens if you drop a piano on a child"?
"A flat minor"

That sounds like A Minor concern.
dammit, puninja'd

7:06 PM
Well done. You changed just enough words that I got zero results with quotes, and too many unrelated results without quotes. And that gave you just enough time to leisurely type out the answer before I got back.

Google-foiling© at its finest.

Better copyright that
Although I think Search Engine Deoptimization (SED) © sounds more marketable

oh man, I'm totally going to go into SED when I grow up

It has a more businessy feel to it for sure.

7:08 PM
its totally legit. It prevents users from leaving your site
as nothing on your site is searchable

I thought the point was to prevent them from arriving in the first place
2

I think you can manage that with enough keywords off a certain list, but then the NSA would probably be interested, too.
5

A honeypot to catch NSA guys.

the number 1 rule of SED is the css rule *{user-select:none !important}

Welcome to my gardening website. #childporn #murder #beastiality

That sounds like the worst garden ever :D

I want to star it, but... no.

Make that part of the text blend in with the background

@Rainbolt Visibility - none, or maybe font-size - 0.

Rule two: fill your meta keywords with "free" several thousand times

Then, they wouldn't be able to highlight it and see it.

Make sure you throw in some terrorism related words, too. They focus on that more than child porn these days :(

7:12 PM

Is this the SED, or the honeypot for NSA guys?

Some surprises for the more tech savvy gardeners out there
I believe grandma knows how to click and drag now

*:hover{visibility:hidden !important}
that would be really fun

Which reminds me... a few years ago I used Grandma's machine to search for directions to the movie theater. We were gonna go watch that penguin movie narrated by Morgan Freeman. A week later I get a call.
"John, I don't know what you did, but it got *spams* on my computer!"
"In your email?"
"Yes, I have spams. One from [blah blah blah]"
And this went on and on. She has never trusted me on her computer since.

you clearly didn't know enough about SED
her email was too SEO

7:16 PM
I never SED I did
2

Were the spams narrated by Morgan Freeman? xkcd.com/462
I wish that was all it took in my family. I get called when she forgets her wifi password. In what world do you even need to know that once you tell your computer/device once?

Assuming that she isn't the one who set it up, I blame the moron that forgot to check the "Automatically connect to this network" box.

I never said Batman!

You just did
I need more MTG puzzles

nobody gets my references

7:23 PM
@Rainbolt After the first time, I double check it each time. I have a weird feeling she "accidentally" tells it to forget the network somehow. I just can't figure out how.

Yesterday we were trying to come up with an unbeatable seven card hand if you go first. We failed miserably.

I think it would be considered broken if there was such a hand.

Well, we got close.

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

user23013A king-of-the-hill idea. Maybe I'll do it a long time later... You have these options each turn (they need better names and a plausible background): Meet k If the bot k also did meet you, and nobody injects, both of your scores are increased by 1. Otherwise nothing happens. But if k is yoursel...

Two Leyline of Lifeforce's start out in play. Serra's Sanctum gives you enough mana to cast Grand Abolisher. They can't counter it, and now they can't cast spells. You have three cards left to combo with.
Unfortunately, there are still ways to stop it.
We tried for like three hours to craft an unstoppable turn one win hand but it isn't possible.

7:31 PM
Grand Abolisher seems a bit cheap mana-wise.
I'd expect that kind of ability on a 2/2 to cost more.
I probably haven't accounted for inflation (deflation?), though. Haven't played in a while ;)

Well, when it was printed in 2012, decks at the time may have been more about doing their own thing rather than interacting with opponents.
Core sets are only in rotation for a year. Expansions see two years of play before they rotate. So the 2012 Core Set can be a little more aggressive with its rares.

Maybe, I have no idea what the metagame is like now.

why would you use 3 cards to get 2 mana? While I don't play MTG, I imagine there is at least 1 card that gives you 1 mana?

You can only play one land per turn
And it needs to be a land. Black Lotus gives you three mana of any color easily, but it can be countered. Land's can't be countered.
And the Leyline can't be countered because it just starts the game in play
And the creature can't be countered because of the Leyline
So you have an uncounterable lock on your opponent, and then three cards to spare

At which point you have no mana and can't play a land, so have to get creative.

7:36 PM
Black Lotus

Now three mana, two cards for the win combo.
Doable I guess.

Lotus, Lotus, Ancestral Visions
Now three cards and five mana.
At this point it's just whatever
I guess if you don't want to depend on your library then you have to get creative
Grand Architect and Pili-Pala make infinite mana together.
Then you throw a big Fireball

This makes me want to run the odds of getting this seven card opener (assuming 60 cards, four of each necessary), but then I don't.

Well if you can also assume that your opponent doesn't have the dumbest reactive hand ever, you can open some card slots

Sure, but that's not the point :P

7:43 PM
I think we were working under the assumption that their hand was 3 x Force of Will and 4 x Mindbreak Trap
Trap can counter uncounterable spells. For free.
We finally beat that one, but the hand still gets owned by some other basic stuff.

Hey, all you pyth users around, what's the shortest way you can think of to distinguish a list of lists from a list of ints?

Best I could find was xhbhb. Returns -1 for list of lists, 0 for list of ints.

How to print contents of stack snippet?

@TheNumberOne As in output of a program or with a printer?

nvm figured it out.

@Rainbolt in standard I guess? otherwise, there's at least one classic.
wait, you can counter the lotus if before your first turn?
oh right... just kept reading... well that's a shame...

My Ubuntu VM really doesn't like having its window resized. It gets very sassy with me.
Just thought everyone should know.

thank you. definitely makes me feel better about my own Ubuntu VM.

Is yours sassy as well?

nope. that's why.

Lucky.
I just figured out how to change the desktop background.
I haven't figured out how to open system monitor though.
I'm kind of an idiot when it comes to using computers for anything other than producing tiny code.

Q: Tips for golfing in K

JohnEK is a programming language in the APL family designed by Arthur Whitney. While the official interpreter is closed-source and commercial, a trial version with a workspace limit of 32 bits of addressing space (which shouldn't pose problems for code golf) can be found at the Kx Systems website. Hooray for the "New Main Posts" feed.
@orlp: I'm still laughing about the fact that you left breadcrumbs for me.

I wrote a small assay for my 39 bytes J solutions explaining why are they so long, and now I found a 14-byte one.... (for the sums for each dimension question)

Ouch.
Better start a new essay!

about "why is it so short?"?

Yes.
@Geobits Nooooooooooo the threat is real
