Anyone want to play Contact?

 Contact

For playing the game Contact, where one person tries to "defend"...

@Phoenix how does it work?

Eh?

I'm in the room and I have no idea what is going on

It's a game
The rules are pinned

oh, thanks

5:10 PM
The numbers are just clue IDs for convenience

I don't totally get it but I guess I'll learn as I go

the game's really fun

5:25 PM
^

Great way to kill time

CMC: power of 2.

@LeakyNun 4

...

Brain flak 32

5:34 PM
@DJMcMayhem cheese: s->s+s.tail(-1).chars.asLines

@Mendeleev CMC: given a natural number n (may be 0), output 2**n

Actually that might not work :(

@LeakyNun Ruby, 9 bytes: ->n{2**n}

CJam: 2ri#

5:38 PM
@DJMcMayhem brainflak is already here

Oh I missed that
Ha! We had the exact same (optimal) solution
Actually, @WheatWizard is that proven optimal?

No I came up with that yesterday

I wonder if there's some polynomial solution

I don't think so
because 2**n is not a polynomial

CMC: C compiler

5:41 PM
@DJMcMayhem what do you mean by polynomial? polynomial time? 2**n is not a polynomial.

@LeakyNun whoops, I meant polygonal

@DJMcMayhem polygons are also polynomials

:shrug:

@Mendeleev Bash, 3 bytes: gcc

But I meant a solution that does something like ({...})

5:43 PM
yeah I did one and it was longer

What was it?

@BusinessCat kek

BTW @LeakyNun codegolf.stackexchange.com/a/91166/31716 is the most beautiful brain-flak code I've ever seen

@DJMcMayhem that is nice

I particularly like the ({({})({}[()])}) section

5:47 PM
wait
that was written by me?

Oh sorry, not quite

@DJMcMayhem what do you mean?

@DJMcMayhem no, I mean what you just linked to me

Yeah, that chat Convo explains why I was confused
I wrote a n^2 snippet that wheatwizard was inspired by you, I thought you wrote it

5:52 PM
?!?!
whatever
@DJMcMayhem do you have/know any good challenge?

You wrote ({({}[()])({})}) so wheatwizard wrote ({({})({}[()])}) which squares a number. He said he got it from you, so I thought you wrote the second one
@LeakyNun hmmm, give me a minute

Q: Dennis numbers 2.0

DJMcMayhemPPCG user and elected mod, @Dennis just became the second ever user to earn over 100k rep! This is a totally original idea, that I did not get from anybody else, but let's make a challenge based off of his user ID, 12012 as a tribute! Looking at it, you'll notice that there are two distinct "...

@DJMcMayhem it seems that Pyth hasn't been very active these days.
Many questions that received many answers didn't receive a Pyth answer

6:08 PM
CJam is pretty inactive too, only Martin and I use it

Pyth used to be so popular in 2015
Both Pyth and CJam, they were the 05ab1e and Jelly of 2015

bye

Q: Combination Of Cards

MinaCombination Of Cards A group of friends from Delhi went to Goa for a vacation. One Night, they went to a casino and enjoyed a lot. A person from the group started gambling there and found his game hard to crack as it was very difficult and logical. That game is played with set of n number of car...

Can we get this closed because it is a general programming question
It's a well written question but it should not be in code-golf

Oh I didn't even notice the "How do I solve this" at the bottom, I thought it was a legit golf
To be fair, it might be an interesting golf

It might be but they definitely seemed to be asking for a solve this for me.

Yeah, I VTC'd

Closed

I feel like the code-golf tag was included just so that it wouldn't be closed immediately for lack of winning condition.

7:22 PM
well one of you should probably comment on it
to let them know why it was closed
ah i see
it's in the tan box
nevermind

Q: Golf this AP CS Java FRQ - Duplicate Sums of Arrays in 2D Array

TargzIn preparation for the AP Computer Science AP Test (Java), our teacher has been giving us FRQs from previous years for practice. My friend and I were golfing this during class today and got it as short as we could, but I'd like to see if there are any shorter solutions any of you can come up wit...

7:48 PM
I added to ^. Not really sure, but it seems that though it's worded like a challenge, there is little room for additional solutions.

8:20 PM
Does anyone know our sort a list challenge?
@mbomb007 I think it is probably because of the language restriction, but I definitely wouldn't tag it as such if it was not restricted to java
It is also a golf-course

Q: Sort an Integer List

Michelfrancis BustillosThe Challenge It's quite simple really, sort a list of numbers. Details You must sort a list of numbers in ascending order, without using any built-in sorting functions/libraries/etc (i.e. list.sort() in Python). Input/output can be done in any method you choose, as long as it is human reada...

Thanks!
I expected it to have 50-60 votes not 13

Probably because no built-ins are allowed

yeah

Should it be tagged ? The tag wiki is a bit vague.
> For challenges involving the manipulation of integers.

yeah

8:42 PM
sounds like it

K. done

8:54 PM
Has there been a "Output a range of numbers" yet?

iirc

This challenge of mine is close:

Q: Home on the Range of Lists

mbomb007This challenge is simply to return a list of lists of integers, similar to the Python range function, except that each successive number must be that deep in lists. Rules: Create a program or a non-anonymous function It should return or print the result The result should be returned in a list ...

@Mendeleev It actually might be a dupe of this

does anyone know how to coerce booleans to integers in bash?

Write a function to do it? Like this, but change it somehow? stackoverflow.com/a/14700751/2415524

@Mendeleev in general, I consider Jelly builtins to make for poor challenges
especially if they're 1-byte builtins, as that guarantees Jelly will win unless another language gets there first

9:04 PM
@ais523 ...How many builtins does Jelly have?

carusocomputingPriority Sorting This challenge is rather simple, given two arrays a and b, use b to sort a such that: The index of elements in a denote that element's priority in b. If any element in a does not exist in b or the current sorted result, it is added to the result. For instance, given: a = ["...

@Mendeleev around 200 or so I think; I don't know the exact number offhand

Wat.

the reason I enjoy programming in Jelly is because it's so expressive, it often lets you state what to do fairly directly rather than needing to keep repeating the code for simple things
so it lets you think about the details of what you're doing, rather than the details of how you're doing it
meanwhile, the reason I enjoy programming in Brachylog is that it's often a matter of working out how to describe the problem in machine-readable form, and the interpreter takes it from there

I enjoy programming in Ruby because it is powerful, expressive, and doesn't use cryptic symbols

9:12 PM
So, I gotta ask... Who technically OWNS PPCG?

StackExchange

Anonymous
@carusocomputing Dennis StackExchange

Haha, so Dennis is definitely the admin?

Well... I mean, I guess my question was about who made it so that's perfect :).

Q: Seventy Seven Sevens

carusocomputingGiven a number n and an upper limit l list the numbers that can be created by multiplying two or more numbers consisting of only sevens of length n or less that are less than l. A161145 is close to this challenge, however, you will NOT be including the 7, 77, 777, 7777, 77777, etc.. Examples n=...

Interesting...

PPCG was a beta site, so its content is user-created.
The site framework has designers and programmers and such.

So even the SE sub-boards are user-created and defined? I always loved the SE model.

When I get the time I will try to reply

Cool. I'm sure it could be shorter, I bet you or Kenny will post a 50-byte solution soon :P

carusocomputingpopularity-contest You've Got 100 Bytes I hope this is well received, because I got super excited when I thought about this challenge... 1. Someone gets an idea for a site, and proposes it on Area 51.
2. A bunch of other people like the idea, so they commit on Area 51 to contributing to the site should it get launched.
3. Some sample questions are created on Area 51, and discussions are held to define the scope.
4. A private beta is launched, usually lasting a few weeks, with just the users who committed on Area 51.
5. A public beta is launched, usually lasting ---5 years--- a few months, where anybody can join the site. Shortly afterwards, pro-tem moderators are appointed.

We're on the "waiting for design" part, and have been for over a year

I'm very pleased with brain-flak's recent surge in popularity

Anonymous
@DJMcMayhem It's a simple Turing tarpit that's slightly more usable than brainfuck. What's not to love?

@Mego ;-; mfw I realize we've been graduated for over a year

9:29 PM
Graduated, but still no design.

9:48 PM
Haha Vsauce probably broke openworm.org by featuring it in one of the DONGs

@ETHproductions I was wondering what was up with this Japt snippet

@WheatWizard It might help to look at the transpiled version in the official interpreter
> (""+((((("<",function(){return 1},((function(){return 1})),function(){return 1}))>)))+"")

Yeah I've been looking at it but I don't really know JS so I'm not sure whats going on there either

Removing all the junk, it's basically running ""+((function(){return 1})>)+""
The problem is that > is expecting a right argument

Oh I see
Thanks a bunch

9:59 PM
np
Working on a polyglot of some sort?

Yeah
You'll never guess what with

Brainflak/miniflak

Not sure what it's supposed to do in *-flak (obviously it's not supposed to do anything in Japt, yet)
Hey look, if I give it two numbers it prints 0 and the second one doubled

I'm working on the add a language to a polyglot

10:04 PM
Ah. That much be quite the challenge
Which of the Brain-flak-related languages are you using though?

@ETHproductions Brain-Flak Classic

ELI5 Brain-Flak Classic vs modern

@WheatWizard: good luck

Start reading for about 5 comics and tell me what you think

10:18 PM

@Mendeleev Classic has explicit IO, but modern has awareness of the size of the current stack

Ah
Is there a way to create a combination?

@ConorO'Brien can you explain what monad is in english :3 I don't speak functional so internet not very helpful >_<

IIRC it's basically just an operator which takes one argument on one side, does something to it, and then passes it on to the other side

@flawr o_O

10:31 PM
@Mendeleev like as a new language or an existing one? Existing, no. New one, maybe

Would it be OK if i made a "thought" language that is basically Mini-Flak but with a output char?

@DJMcMayhem ok

Really, you could create a ton of flaks by just defining four monads and four nilads, so if you added an explicit output monad, you'd have to lose one of the others
I guess you could afford to lose <...>
@Christopher I'm not sure what you mean. What's a "thought language"?

Please rate my answer!

A: Sort an Integer List

MendeleevRuby, 22 bytes ->a{[*a.min..a.max]&a} Builds an array out of the range between the minimum and maximum elements of the input array. Returns the intersection between the two arrays.

@DJMcMayhem A language without a real interpreter

10:42 PM
If it's a good thought language it won't stay that way for long.

All it is Mini-Flak with an output char
Outputs top of stack

Q: Find a set of maximal matching edges

helloworld922Consider a connected undirected graph. A matching set of edges on this graph is defined as a set of edges such that no two edges in the set share a common vertex. For example, the left figure denotes a matching set in green, while the right figure denotes a non-matching set in red. A matching ...

@Christopher Would it be a single char or a nilad?
And what would it's value be?

Anyone want to play Contact? There's not a game on right now.

@PhiNotPi ehh, not sure I care to fix it since the contest is long over
But yeah, should be done, bleh

Comrade SparklePonyPalindromic Factorial! Many people know what the factorial function does: multiplies a number by all the natural numbers beneath it. Could anyone here help me with some JavaScript?

11:18 PM
@WheatWizard yes

I'm currently trying to make the following code run without error link. But I can't really read the current error.
I'm not sure what is wrong with it

@WheatWizard Use your browser's console, if it's Chrome click on the link to the code location, look where the cursor is
@WheatWizard Here it's because () isn't valid in JS

Ok cool
Thanks a bunch

@DJMcMayhem Single char. Outputs top of stack char would be .

@Christopher It would be way more versatile if you made it a monad like <...> that prints its contents

11:23 PM
@WheatWizard Perhaps both? . prints top of stack and \.../ prints contents

No reason to have . when you have <({})>

but golf.
It is a code golf site and a thought language so it really doesn't matter. This would allow it to answer continuous output questions

So does Brain-Flak Classic

Wait what. I never knew about that

In Brain-Flak Classic [...] outputs its contents

11:31 PM
@WheatWizard Isn't ({}) redundant?

@Phoenix Not always

@Phoenix In this hypotheitcal language <...> prints the value inside

Go play somewhere else please.

please don't ping a bunch of random people
I'm fairly certain that Mego, for example, doesn't really want to get pinged randomly by a "summons"

Wait why did TNB just refresh
Also Sorry people
