J people: Why does f^:, when assigned to a verb, is (f^:r) l?

@HelkaHomba what song?

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ The rickroll song? NGGYU?

8:16 PM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ You know what ^: does, right?

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ :D did you click it?

Is it possible to search for everything a user has said in a room?

The right argument of ^: specifies the number of times to apply f

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Well it was Mrs Robinson. The "Wo"s became "web"s.

@quartata Yes. I'm specifically wondering about the behaviour of a verb followed by a conjunction

8:17 PM
which is then applied as a monad to l

talk more, you guys aren't keeping up!

we're all talking, but really we're just killing time

Although I would have thought that it would be (f^:l) r
Right?
That makes more sense to me

@quartata maybe, I might've mixed up l and r

What happens when the conjunction acts like a dyad?

8:19 PM
@flawr Ooh, I just subscribed to all of those Feedly could find in this file. And also Cergos.

Are there even any?
Yeah, I don't think so

that's not what I'm asking

Well, wait a second

I now have over 40+ comics, and right at my hand.

I'm wondering why f^: can be assigned to a verb and be used again

8:20 PM
Because they made it that way?

mark all as read

I don't think there's a satisfactory explanation. I'm pretty sure it's a special case thing.

@quartata okay, so is there a general rule?

Well, 25 comics.

Well I presume it's (f conjunction l) r
I don't think it can be done dyadically i.e 4 x3 4 or anything

8:22 PM
oh, okay

gypsy

8:26 PM

rhythm

python says it counts

False
@HelkaHomba see?

rhythm is the longest, IIRC

Q: Hi, can you draw some odd art? Bye!

Stewie GriffinCreate a program that outputs "Hi, Hello!" in k bytes. By altering n bytes, the code should output all odd numbers in the range 5 <= x <= 25. Changing another m bytes should result in a code that prints the following frame in ASCII-art: +-+ | | +-+ Change another o bytes, and print Hello, bye!...

now think up the longest English word you can off the top of your head

@HelkaHomba syzygy
do I win now?

@ArtOfCode rhythms technically according to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_words_without_vowels

8:29 PM
@HelkaHomba oh, sure. I wasn't thinking of derivates

cwm
I win for shortest?

cymru
Wait, it has an u in it.

@zyabin101 u

@Fatalize English? 2 syllable?

8:31 PM
@ArtOfCode ninja'd

It's not English anyway, it's Welsh

@HelkaHomba it is english, it's even in your wiki page

@ev3commander spelled combe these days, I do believe

Any books I should read?

@ArtOfCode pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis

8:32 PM
Why isn't y considered a full vowel in English btw?

Nice. I had hippopotomonstrousesquipedaleaphobia.

@ArtOfCode Who cares, I read it in a book about mountains

Are there any American English words with multiple accepted pronunciations (not just slang) that have different numbers of syllables?

@Fatalize because english

@ArtOfCode Actually, if you want the longest word i can think of (not actually spell) is the scientific name of titin (182919 letters, methio-something)

8:34 PM
Oh, that one.
I know the one you mean.

@Fatalize In words like "you" it's behaving as a consonant

@HelkaHomba but a lot of the time it's a vowel

yes but not all the time

@HelkaHomba not that i know of

in "hue" the u also has a part of it pronounced as the consonant sound of y

8:38 PM
@ev3commander I was thinking 'alumin[i]um' in US/UK English but there might be lots of such cross-the-pond examples. Just US English is trickier

@HelkaHomba caramel?

ohh, maybe
I say car-mel but I've heard car-a-mel

Maybe?

car-ah-mel is the right one
fact

Choc-o-late or Choc-late?

8:42 PM
@HelkaHomba I say car-a-mel

colonel? col-oh-nel / kernel

Ev-ry or Ev-e-ry?
@Fatalize No. Nobody says col-oh-nel

@Fatalize isn't it agreed on to be kernel

kernel makes no sense though
stupid brits :p

8:43 PM
oh I know one
coup de grâce

although it's debatable if it's an English word

@Fatalize You mean coo vs coop? It's still the same syllable count

@HelkaHomba gra vs grass
still one syllable though

@Fatalize agreed, though I think it is official. Similarly British lieutenant = leftenant
2

8:45 PM
wait

@Fatalize car-mel is the right one

I thought I heard lootenant once

@Fatalize Yes, it's pronounced that way in the US at least.

Not-so hypothetical hypothetical question: Would you approve an edit that was just capitalizing a single character?

@Fatalize Not British. Just American, maybe Aussi Ozzy Australian.

8:46 PM
@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ sure

No. i would accept one with atleast 3 grammar edits

@wizzwizz4 Ozzy? Osbourne? You mean Aussie right? :p
(btw the pronounciation of aussie also makes no sense)

@HelkaHomba Really? I feel like if you are <2K trivial edits are kind of a waste of time. If you are going to make other people review it, it should be worth the time taken to review it.

I hear it with both the s and z sound, depending or area.

I've never heard an Australian say it with an s sound

8:48 PM
Then again, trivial grammar edits are still an improvement, even if just barely.

even though I don't think there's any English word where ss is pronounced z

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ Can you even submit an edit with a single char diff if <2k? I thought there was a 6-char limit (unless you loophole it somehow).

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ Eh maybe. I've made one char edits before without need for review and I think that's ok if its important enough

@HelkaHomba You realise that the pronunciation for both of those words have been around for longer than the spellings, and it's the spellings that don't make sense?

@Fatalize Hussie

8:49 PM
@HelkaHomba Well if you are >2K, it's definitely OK, I just feel like the bar is a little higher when you are <2K

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ nice trick with boxing the space

@wizzwizz4 I don't realise
I realize

@Maltysen thanks, that's the first thing I thought of when I saw the challenge

@wizzwizz4 still makes no sense, it comes from French's "Lieutenant" which has no f sound

@Geobits Technically no, but I just reviewed one.
Granted, it was a tag-wiki.
So, apparently that has different rules.

8:50 PM
Oh, for tag wikis I would probably just approve it.
I don't think there's any rep gained, so any trivial edit is fine imo.
(assuming it is an improvement)

Can one confirm UK kerb = US curb? o.O

Eh, I suppose.
In other news, I just entered the top "suggested edits" reviews of all time: codegolf.stackexchange.com/review/suggested-edits/stats

I thought Kerbs were those little green rocket guys

Das kindof cool I guess.

You've got the two backwards.

i know

8:54 PM
cheque is british, check is american

Another one (I think, someone correct me if I'm wrong) is "First" floor. In US, the first floor is on the ground, and in the UK the first floor is above the ground.

... or below ground
(US)
... or halfway on halfway below

Yeah, that's what I've seen.

I've seen C B 1 2 3

don't ask

For big buildings having a ground/lobby floor seems more likely. But yeah, normally 1st floor of a house or something = ground floor

@Dennis claps you found it

@Dennis @CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ "Free" speech isn't totally free, not even in the "land of freedom" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_free_speech_exceptions

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ I did.

Q: Convert a number to a different base

PearsonArtPhotoLet's say you have an integer n, and you want to convert it to an arbitrary base, say 5 or 7. How can you best do that? The output should be in a string format. Bases will only be "natural" numbers (positive integers, above one). The base version will only require managing from 2-10, bonus points...

I wished for a lawful one, I was chaotic (started lawful).
@quartata >_> I have the worst, yet best, luck.

10:44 PM
At least my luck is just consistently bad

Even crazier: chaos-pp makes the C preprocessor a quasi-functional language in itself. Example: This code produces This C-file without actually compiling it (gcc -E -P bottle.c -std=c99). That's one of the trivial examples. This is black magic.

@quartata lol
@quartata next time, I'm asking you what to do when I find a bad/weird/good situation.

@NewMainPosts This guy is a moderator on Space Exploration SE and has 30k SO rep
I seriously don't think anyone on the network really understands us
