Q: How should we handle answers that predate standard loopholes?

Alex A.There was a time—a dark, dark time—in which there were no standard loopholes. Since we began classifying certain things as loopholes and banning their use, the overall quality of the content on this site has improved. However, answers from the Dark Ages remain, answers which violate loopholes but...

I thought we already had consensus on this
That they don't apply retroactively

@quartata If so, I wasn't aware of it.

Huh.

11:06 PM
to much of a WIP

@EasterlyIrk true. Maybe later then.

there's a strong consensus on that meta post XD

"Flag and delete them" got a lot of downvotes fast. Huh.
I don't think Alex particularly articulated why we should which is part of the problem

There's obviously 4 people voting on the entire thing, and the third person hasn't weighed in yet >_>

@quartata Dude, just tell him lol @AlexA. ^^

11:08 PM
But let's just say that part of the reason we still see people posting "cheaty answers" is because our most upvoted challenges have these super old answers
I actually have been going back through these answers and I've.... seen things....

Can confirm, 50% of user flags are quartata

@Doorknob Really? that seems.... high
Mego has way more flags surely

That's an exaggeration. :P

Best compromise: "Lock all of them, delete them, then leave them alone." :P

rofl

11:09 PM
Locking isn't a good idea IMO. It's not really what locking answers is for.

can you lock a deleted post?

Yes.

Can you delete a locked post?

Mods can.

11:11 PM
rofl

@AshwinGupta XD
And I just realized your avatar is amazing

@Dennis apparently the HTML spec says all elements that aren't pre or children of pre don't preserve whitespace, changing your textareas to pre might work for that line endings thing

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ ikr
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ u watch dw?

11:16 PM
yes! :D

good :D
I can't wait for the new season
last one was SOOO good

moffat's finally leaving tho

@AshwinGupta YAH

yeah ^

yeah tru dat

11:16 PM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ :D ikr

I don't like him as much as he was for doctors 10 or 11

better than 9

I don't liek "the doctor's notes" episodes though.
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ hell naw
well

which one was that?

9 fit the "weird eccentric time travelling dude" best.
Except maybe 11.
11 was really emotional.

11:17 PM
true... but 12 goes well nicely

Capaldi really redeemed himself last season. Season 8 was terrible IMHO, I thought that DW was dead after season 8 and I was really sad. IK it wasn't competly capaldi's fault (mostly moffats) but still...

I liked season 8, but yeah, I see what you mean

I didn't even watch season 9 until I read reviews, then I bought it on amazon w/ my christmas money. Best purchase ever.

and then the bomb dropped in season 9 and I was not happy :(
but I was
@AshwinGupta :D good for you

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Idk, some episodes were good, most were mediocore at best.

11:18 PM
That's true

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Like the first one was good, deep breath.

@EasterlyIrk because 7 8 9

^^^^

Hello everybody.

shit stahp messaing

11:19 PM
@EasterlyIrk yeah I liked him

@AshwinGupta oo, that was tense :D nice episode too

@R.Kap ohai

@R.Kap Hi! Have you rep capped yet?
(r. kap)
(r.ep kapped)

I have hit 194 in a day. It was very sad.

But damn, season 9 had the best opening story by far. I mean shit, first episode and Davros transports doctor to skaro. Plus missy is a f*cking baller.

11:19 PM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ </badpun>

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Haha...very funny

@R.Kap :3
@AshwinGupta yess

I think what made it better was they focused on writing. They didn't limit themselves to one episode stories, I really REALLY apreciated the three part storys

11:20 PM
ok bye gtg, I have to work on my math hw

I need to rewatch it
@AshwinGupta bai

What show are people talking about here?

@quartata Sure it is. Content dispute. The contents of the answer are disputed since they're disallowed now and weren't when it was posted.

@R.Kap doctor who

@AlexA. I thought that was for copyright disputes.

11:22 PM
That's what I was thinking, but just had to make sure

@quartata No

Does anyone know of a short way to do '\n'.join in Python?

'\n'.join

Or is that the shortest way?

^^
@R.Kap that is shortest unless you assign x='\n'.join.
then x(foo) works

11:23 PM
Don't think you can curry like that can you?

Vindaloo

@AlexA. dont make me hungry I just ate

@quartata it works

Then I guess my answer can't get any shorter than 423 here:

@quartata I added some articulation.

Monking

I didn't think this would be that controversial
Bad answers are bad

11:31 PM
Starting writing a function to split delimited strings in SQL, non-golfed "clean" version is 1,371 bytes no counting any code documentation

@Phrancis monking

@Phrancis do all you CR people do that? :D

and me

A lot of us do

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Yes, it's a CR meme.

but do I count as CR person?

@quartata I knew that, but I didn't know if they actually did it

@EasterlyIrk Well, you've posted there are hang out in chat pretty often, so I don't see why not

Code Review entity

Code Reviewer

Oh. I'm on code review, but I rarely ever use it.

My first gold badge on the network was from Code Review.

Probably because I hang out here more often than not.

@Phrancis :D
@Phrancis ._.

@Phrancis Thank you for not shouting at me with your SQL.

IKR^^

i don't even sql much and that is awful

11:41 PM
I really with you hadn't mixed tabs and spaces though

the S in SQL is for shout

Well, the code reads pretty decent all things considered, it's just that SQL was not designed for this at all so it's kind of a hack :D

What do you use to indent?
4 space indents? I can't tell

In that code he mixed tabs and 4-space indents

Oh that's why

11:42 PM
I'm just not very good at giving advice

Oh, yeah, I didn't have the right setting in SSMS at first, I need to replace tabs with spaces

@Dennis Can you please pull 05AB1E?

@Downgoat Edit Cheddar showcase

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I did

11:43 PM
whoops

@quartata fixed

Mmm, cheesy chicken and rice...

@Phrancis I think you mean spaces with tabs???

@Adnan Done.

Stop talking about food you're gonna make me hungry and I'll eat myself out of house and home

11:45 PM
@Dennis Thanks :)

@EasterlyIrk I thought you liked spaces

@quartata But.... it was good...

@quartata ._.

What's happening to you you're starting to like JS and tabs

@EasterlyIrk I hate tabs

11:45 PM
i never liked spaces

who are you what have you done with riker

Good for golfing but that's about it

no seriously i never liked spaces

@Phrancis They're good for organizing notebooks, too, right?

@EasterlyIrk D:D

11:46 PM
@Geobits indeed

Feb 9 at 2:37, by RikerW
@AlexA. DON"T SUPPORT THE MENACE THAT IS SPACES FOR INDENTATION

@Phrancis And organizing code ;)

clearly you edited that

obvious photoshop

11:46 PM
nope
DOWN WITH SPACES
UP WITH TABS

Problem I see with tabs, personally, is they don't render the same on all platforms (that's possibly the point of them, but annoying)

true

Yea... that's the point of them :P

But tabs are designed to indent stuff. Why don't you use them for their purpose?

@EasterlyIrk Tabs are an archaic leftover from typewriters

11:48 PM
Tabs are great on typewriters

Because they don't work well for that purpose in code

> :D
:D
@quartata D:

@EasterlyIrk It's the truth

ALL IS TAB

Those are the same typewriters where you had to hit carriage return and then newline

11:48 PM
aka windows?

@QPaysTaxes And ruby mandates two spaces which I love
@EasterlyIrk No, actual typewriters

I was joking.

I use two spaces when coding on notepad. that's it

Two spaces is objectively just the right amount of whitespace
Four spaces just feels like too much

@QPaysTaxes I do that as well, which is why I can never use Go

11:49 PM
@QPaysTaxes D:
@AlexA. D:

@QPaysTaxes 4 spaces is Python standard

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Tabs for the rest?

@quartata You should set your tabs to display as two spaces then :P

@EasterlyIrk No, I use goats when I can.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ :DDDDDD :3 <3 BESTEST BUDDY

11:50 PM
@Geobits But if I upload them anywhere else they'll display as four or eight spaces

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ other than that... ;P

@EasterlyIrk Tabs are the best.
@EasterlyIrk <3

@quartata Yep, and when I look at your code, it'll display the way I like it ;)

we rule for meta consensus... :P

@QPaysTaxes That's really bizarre. Had you mixed indentation? In IDLE, the IDE that ships with Python, you can set your indentation and it even says in there "Python standard is 4 spaces!" (exclamation point and all).

11:50 PM
^^ XD

Using tabs is a bad idea in Lisp in particular

also:

that was a ad. wtf

11:51 PM
@EasterlyIrk O_o

its for people w/ dry eyes

@EasterlyIrk Yeah, I really don't understand why this is so controversial.

11:52 PM
This should remove any element in my array that has the same id as the object that's invoking the function right?:

aliens=aliens.filter(function(i){ return (i.uniqueID != this.uniqueID)});

I think people are thinking of really upvoted quirky charming answers
These flat out suck.
They're usually something like:

@quartata Same. Clearly everyone should agree with me.

I don't mean to beg for upvotes, but pls:

still need a 9 vote o_O

@QPaysTaxes please don't make your users all install a plugin just to visit your website

Unity doesn't require a plugin
It's not flash

Just use Pepper and OpenGL ES

Are you sure?
Oh. I guess I already have the plugin then.

It has a new export to WebGL thing.
Dunno.
I just remember someone mentioning it

@QPaysTaxes Oh I never knew this. Well I actually don't know c++ or c# so yeah I'd have to learn but I'll look into it

C# is pretty similar to Java, you shouldn't have too much trouble.

@AshwinGupta yes
wait

@AshwinGupta yes

@quartata this I've heard. I'll try to learn some c#, may be useful since I use windows.
Ty Conor and Downgoat.

So that means the problem is something else =/

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Seriously? Why?

@QPaysTaxes No, you should do what your code tells you to do.

@quartata some bigot probably didn't like me sharing stuff in chat

Will someone answer?:

@QPaysTaxes thats what I'm trying to do LOL. When a missile hits the alien, it needs to remove itself from the array of aliens.
