I would really like to see a modern text editor adopt a vertical menu. I mean, widescreen is pretty much the standard. The amount of vertical space in GDocs is really low (taskbar, URL bar, toolbar etc. at eat away at that). It's been a long time since I've used iWork Pages, but I think that had something like that.
Yep. That just makes more sense.

I'd like to see less ribbons and more menus
think office 2003

Menus suck, ribbons are much better.

I strongly disagree
to this day i still have trouble navigating ribbons

helpful paperclips are better than menus or ribbons

i'd be ok with an opt-in feature
aw clippy :[

5:05 PM
Early ribbons really made no sense. But if you have lots of smart controls, like in the latest Excel, it's pretty useful.
But Excel handles more horizontal media. I think Word should have to option to use a vertical ribbon (exclusively), like in Pages.

Ribbon Hero is a video game developed by Microsoft Office Labs. The game is available as a free download and serves to educate users of Microsoft Office 2007 and 2010 how to use the ribbon interface. It is followed by the sequel, Ribbon Hero 2. == Gameplay == Ribbon Hero appears on the Ribbon in the supported Microsoft Office programs. Once opened, it lists challenges in four sections: working with text, page design and layout, getting artistic, and quick points. Each challenge is designed to teach the user a feature of Microsoft Office, and opens an example document which the user must edit using...

If you need a game to teach people to use your UI, you failed to create a useful UI.

I'm surprised such a thing exists but I agree with @mınxomaτ

an useful*

"a useful" is correct

5:09 PM
> Microsoft intended Solitaire "to soothe people intimidated by the operating system," and at a time where many users were still unfamiliar with graphical user interfaces, it proved useful in familiarizing them with the use of a mouse, such as the drag-and-drop technique required for moving cards.

huh

From the Wiki for Microsoft Solitaire.

@TuxCopter A useful. Although U is a vowel, the pronunciation of useful begins with a Y sound (yoos-ful) which is a consonant sound.

Unless you pronounce it 'ooseful' for some reason o_O

then nvm

5:10 PM
@TimmyD That's hilarious.

same goes for unicorn and eunuch
@Geobits you use eclipse or intellij?

@mınxomaτ Evolution sucks then. We still use games to learn our own interface as children ;)
@Poke I've used both, but Eclipse more often recently.

You should use vim

I usually use eclipse but I've been exploring intellij to see if it might compliment my workflow better

@TuxCopter That wasn't the question. Geez, spotting vim users is like spotting crossfitters.

5:12 PM
any neat tips you're aware of?

@mınxomaτ Hilarious or not, it was effective.

There's a vim-ish text editor that even comes with Clippy: kakoune.org

@Geobits Or vegetarians.

@TuxCopter I do use vim but I try not to rely on it as an IDE

@Poke Not in particular, no.
Using vim for Java is a ludicrous idea anyway.

5:14 PM
Why?

Because reasons

If the problem is the boilerplate you can make templates

Using vim for Java is a ludicrous idea anyway. ... Using vim for Java is a ludicrous idea anyway.
Works both ways.

@Geobits Checking in (re-)learning Java in vim. No problems here :)

@TimmyD ಠ_ಠ for the second

5:15 PM
I use vim for Java

I use vim for everything

@Doorknob Well it's not a problem to wash clothes in a tub by the river either, but you just don't have to any more :P

Does vim have a game to teach its UI? QED.

@TuxCopter If you're making templates/macros you're defeating the point of using an IDE
@TimmyD there is vimtutor

www.openvim.com <-- Online vim tutorial

5:16 PM
I learned most vim commands by accidentally destructing a file >_>

May 15 at 23:58, by mınxomaτ
@Dennis You can cut bread with a spork and "never have any issues". Doesn't mean there's not a better way :P

^ this guy gets it

@mınxomaτ Or the infomercial where the person is cutting it with a doorstop.

I use vim for developing JGolf because I use a bash script for it

5:19 PM
I use vim mostly because it make me look smart

> I use vim mostly because I think it makes me look smart
FTFY

And also because it's powerful

Using vim makes you look smart like driving a stick makes you look mechanically inclined.

PowerShell is powerful. Doesn't mean I use it for all my golfs. Oh, wait...

@Geobits Except the world is bigger than the US and there are countries where this is pretty much the standard. I don't know of a vim country though.

5:22 PM
IntelliJ Idea is better than Eclipse (although I have only used it for Android)

ಠ_ಠ Do we have to flamewar?

vim is better than IntelliJ idea

No it's not

Yes it is

@mınxomaτ This is a good point. I've lived in a few countries, but only in automatic-majority ones so far.

5:23 PM
@KritixiLithos What tips/benefits are there to using intellij over eclipse?

@TuxCopter That's not even comparable by any measure.

@Poke Auto-completion

Eclipse has auto-completion though...

eclipse does have the intellisense-like popup

@Geobits Didn't you say you lived in Germany as a child? It's all manual here. In higher class cars (like R-line and up), it's slowly changing.

5:24 PM
But IntelliJ's auto-completion is better than Eclipse

@Geobits I use vim and drive stick. Do I win?

Eclipse's auto-completition is ********bad********

@mınxomaτ Yeah, I didn't drive much at that point, so I didn't really notice what they were using.
@DJMcMayhem Nope. I can't even tell you how much nope :P

Even in Denmark most cars are manual

5:25 PM
@TuxCopter I haven't really had a problem with it. Another thing I like is have the little javadocs popup. Is there a way to get this in intellij?

Yeah, the javadocs popup is nice.

idk the only time I used IntelliJ is made weird things
It wanted to update with an inexistant Mercurial repo so it crashed

I used IntelliJ for Android dev

Too much nope

5:26 PM
Eclipse's auto-completion made me cry

@KritixiLithos Yeah, I use it for that, too. Android Studio has come a long way since the early Eclipse plugin days.

VS+R# or Rider do have awesome assistant tools for C#. VS+R# even has pretty useful auto-completion for C++

R#?

Eclipse is not recommended for Android development anymore

.NET version of R?

5:27 PM
How ya doin

@KritixiLithos I know... that's pretty much what I said ;)

@betseg fᴥ

@TuxCopter Resharper, a code analysis platform.

Ahk

@TuxCopter polar bear?

5:28 PM
Letter 'ain'

Looks like omega from here

@Geobits Have you heard of the ConstraintLayout? It seems pretty amazing and the layout editing is better than even, or so I've heard.

@KritixiLithos Heard of it, but haven't played with it. Haven't done much in Android since it was introduced :(

@Geobits Me neither... I can't wait for the holidays to play around with Android Studio 2.2!

5:31 PM
I guess I need a Pixel for playing around with the new OS on... Oh darn >_>

I want to make a no-deadline bounty for Alphafuck, something like "Answer a question with Alphafuck using proper English grammar.". This ok?

Isn't there the AVD for Android 7.1?

@Geobits looks like you can get the javadoc popup

(after a proper readme ofc)

it's in the settings

5:32 PM
Anybody have experience dying clothes? Wondering how long it's going to take to turn a white cotton tee bright-ass orange. It's been about half an hour so far.
@KritixiLithos Hush. I want a new phone anyway :P

@betseg You could add AlphaFuck to Showcase your language?

better idea: guess what costume geobits is making

A downvote

@NathanMerrill That's actually not a bad idea. It might take a while to guess though.

@TuxCopter Those are blue, not orange.

5:35 PM
@Geobits The Pixel is so amazing. But it hasn't released to Europe yet :(

@Geobits is it living?

@El'endiaStarman Well, they're orange on AskUbuntu, but... :P

@NathanMerrill You're going to hate me for saying this, but it depends on what you mean by 'living'.

@Geobits Nearly Headless Horseman?

5:36 PM
nope

jack o lantern
it was alive

It's a fictional character. So not 'living', but in-universe it would be considered living.

Zombie

ah ok
bah, I don't know my marvel/dc

Not an issue, since neither would help with this.

5:39 PM
Nazgul?

nope

hero, side character, or villain?

main protagonist

Book or movie?

Uhh.... both?

5:41 PM
Time to use brute force A?
AA
AAA?

Nemo!
oh, not a book

@KritixiLithos Luckily there's an exponentially backing timer on guesses :P
@NathanMerrill And no

movie animated or acted?

James and the Giant Peach?

@NathanMerrill Has been both, but animated is far more well-known.
Far more
@El'endiaStarman Nope

5:43 PM
...
The fox from dora the explorer?

Swiper? Nope

main protagonist
simba?

nope

When was the animated film released?

Is your character a food?

5:45 PM
@Poke no

Tigger maybe?

Are we playing 20 questions?

@KritixiLithos Impossible to say. There have been many, over the course of multiple decades
@Yodle No, restricting to yes/no questions would drag this on too long.
@El'endiaStarman Sorry, this one isn't made out of rubber or springs.

@Yodle Trying to guess Geobits' Halloween costume. Clues: bright orange t-shirt, source has been a book and made into movies, both animated and acted (though the latter isn't well-known), main protagonist.

Ah I scrolled up, we're guessing your costume :p

5:47 PM
Actually, you're not guessing my costume. That was an inaccurate assumption.
13 mins ago, by Nathan Merrill
better idea: guess what costume geobits is making

Oh, Minibits' costume?

Yes

oh, so it needs to be pop culture right now

@NathanMerrill Hahaha, you don't know my kid very well :P
He's well acquainted with the classics

fred flinstone

5:48 PM
no

@NathanMerrill On the other hand, multiple films over several decades suggests that it's not pop culture.

@Geobits I think the better term is I don't know your kid at all

Oh, that was a good guess, Poke.

@El'endiaStarman I was thinking that there had been multiple version, the most recent super popular

@NathanMerrill Well, yes :D

5:49 PM
Garfield?

nope, not garfield

Aw, Garfield sounded like a really good guess.

Ernie from sesame street

nope

what's the primary color of this character?
is it actually orange?

5:50 PM
I typed in "orange protagonist" into Google expecting that to be helpful...
Got results for A Clockwork Orange

@NathanMerrill As in skin tone? No, not orange.

A clockwork orange - the animation :)

@Geobits no, like, his outfit

Yes then. Orange

5:52 PM
@TimmyD re your comment that's what my answer is trying to do

Kenny? (Southpark)

@PhiNotPi Beats me. No one knows what to do about popcons lol

Nah. He's not quite old enough for south park yet.

I just remembered that I got free Mathematica with my RasPi. Not gonna complain :D

Are we seriously picking Halloween costumes for you the day of?

5:53 PM
charmander

Wait, is the character from Loony Tunes?

@Geobits

tony the tiger

Naruto

@quartata No, we're guessing what costume he's making for Minibits.

5:54 PM
@Poke no and no, @El'endiaStarman no @Yodle no

An orange?

Ah.

@TuxCopter nope

What are the hints? I'm good at this

Are there any other colors besides orange?

5:55 PM
@Yodle yes

like, stripes are something

@quartata pop-con chaos!

there are colors other than orange

But orange is the main color

yes

5:55 PM
A tiger

no

Naruto?

no again

It's a slice of pumpkin pie with whipped cream and almonds.

lol no

5:56 PM
Is it anime?

dreamworks?

Darn.

A living orange stone?

One of either Kritixi or Nathan was a yes just now.

Annoying Orange.

5:56 PM
-.-

Yugioh!

eww no

Digimon

nope

Bakugan

5:57 PM
@quartata Orange shirt; main protagonist; has a book; multiple movies over several decades, mostly animated.

@KritixiLithos nope

Velma?

@El'endiaStarman I'm not sure "has a book" is the best way to put that.
@TimmyD no

Orange-colored spongebob

nope

5:57 PM
give us a hint please

A pumpkin

A hint? I've given a bunch

Luffy?

@Yodle Actually, isn't Patrick orange?

Ask questions if you want hints.

5:58 PM
Aang!

nope

Eh, I'd consider patrick closer to a pink

Goku?

@TimmyD Took long enough. Yes. It's Goku

nemo

5:58 PM
But Sponge Bob Square Pants isn't an anime nor was it made by Dreamworks.

tails

Yay

the cheetos mascot

Umm...

crash bandicoot

5:59 PM
I have no idea who Goku is :/

Dragonball z right?

@NathanMerrill Most powerful character in Dragonball Z.

Yeah

Could be Dragonball.
Doesn't have to be Z.

Ah. i've seen a few episodes, but not that familiar with it.

5:59 PM
@Yodle shame

It's going to be a hybrid dragonball (Z) costume. He wanted the dark blue backing shirt and bracers, but also the powerpole.

I've only heard on Dragon Ball Z from friends, never played it or watched it

Well it always played on Cartoon Network, but I didn't have that at my house as a kid. Had to go over my grandma's

In that case, you should watch DBZ Abridged, made by Team Four Star.

@quartata Speaking of which... I might actually be in favor of pop-cons (specifically how you've outlined) being on-topic.

6:00 PM
@Yodle Just look for the abridged series online

Ooo @Poke they're bringing back the snow map

@quartata But we're not consistent even in applying that standard.
5 hours ago, by TimmyD
Like, honestly, what is the difference between Make the pattern from composition notebooks and Computer Generated Cracked Soil?

@Geobits velma

I'm fairly sure Velma doesn't have a powerpole.

Well, that would certainly make Scooby Doo more interesting to watch.

6:13 PM
well i haven't logically made it to goku yet

@TimmyD I'm sure you can find that version online if you really want to o_o

6:27 PM
TIL my printer won't let me print black and white images if the magenta ink has run out :/

neither does my colour one

@Geobits huh

@Geobits That's pretty common, actually. It's because the printer companies came up with this concept of a "Rick Black Ink" or something, so even printing monochrome images uses the color cartridges.

I like how a printer+scanner combo including cartridges is cheaper than replacing the cartridges themselves.

You're likely not getting full cartridges with the combo purchase.

6:36 PM
I actually tested that once, they are really the same.

Fascinating.

Depends on the brand most likely. I know Epson gives scant cartridges with the printer.

For some you need to press (or short out) the reset button on the cartridge to report the actual level. Some that come with printers are just set to report lower levels.

I barely use the printer.

I went with a laser for my home printer.
My inkjet that I purchased in college finally gave out, so it was time to upgrade.

6:39 PM
@KritixiLithos I haven't used mine in a year at least. I just got it out of the closet and plugged it in because I needed an iron-on decal.

My throw-away printer is a Canon MG2950. I also have a bigger printer for posters (Epson LFP from the SureColor series). I also still have a needle printer in my possession.

We are slowly moving to a paper-free era

I find that amazing. I print pretty regularly, just because it's way easier for me and the wife, from an organizing perspective, to have all our online purchases or receipts or documents filed in folders.

nvm

> Same here. Running noral does the did 4 me.
From a tech forum I'm reading.
I honestly have no idea what that person is trying to say.

6:53 PM
@TuxCopter done

updooted

btw that lang doesnt have anything that is 1-byte :|

@TimmyD Maybe they meant "did the deed"

You can probably do like Destructible's answer and multiply the score by 2 since the language only have character pairs

@mınxomaτ Ahhhhh. Yes. That makes sense in context. Thanks!

6:56 PM
@TuxCopter makes sense.
i'll create an esolangs page to show commands

Baaaaaah
@betseg Or a github wiki page

btw, @KritixiLithos, i wont port AF to Java
