int(input())%12 in[3,6,9] might work

He said a number from STDIN
And I have a better idea
One second

Or `input()%12`in'369'

@ASCII-only Clever! but in python 2 you don't need the int() around input()

@WheatWizard ninja'd :P
@quartata This is really long for one second

Turns out I might have uninstalled Python 2

12:08 AM
I have it, (also too many interpreters I installed for mame's quine relay) I can test

Nah, I have a lot of things to try

You can do it in python 3 if it is an inconvenience I don't really care

It's almost done

@TuxCopter @ASCII-only ill try codeanywhere. you should get a invite email

Oh, nevermind. :/

12:11 AM
@quartata What haopened

I don't think I can do it without an and like that.
Was trying some number theory bullshit

What exactly were you trying

Well first I was trying to see if there was a trick with bitwise operations
Then I was trying testing for x = 6n + 3 where n is an integer until I realized I'm dumb and that doesn't cover them all

Huh, looks like that iSmell thing actually worked: wired.com/1999/11/digiscent

What
> DigiScent is here. If this technology takes off, it's gonna launch the next Web revolution.
oh dear

12:15 AM
> Back in 1985, when he was founder, president, and chair of MacroMind (now Macromedia), he cowrote and launched the product that became Director and its playback module, Shockwave, still among the most popular tools for CD-ROM, DVD, and Web multimedia. He's now CEO of a startup called Broadband Mechanics, developing applications in anticipation of the era of true high-speed Internet access.
Oh the innocent early 2000.
> Still, someone has found time to paste a brand name on the side. I'm expecting it to say "DigiScents," the name of the company Bellenson and Smith have formed as partners. But the lettering reads "iSmell." - "That's the product name?" I ask. "For real?"

12:29 AM
@ASCII-only pls halp python interface bork

> In 2005, researchers from the University of Huelva developed XML Smell, a protocol of XML that can transmit smells. The researchers also developed a scent-generating device and worked on miniaturising its size.[9]
@Downgoat why not ask me? I'm a pythonista.

@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC pls halp how does python C++ lib work
i.e. libpython

carefully

I essentially need to get to the steps of importing a package
which I'm guessing is done through establishing a python enviornment and calling __import__

@Downgoat ok, lemme help
foo imports foo
foo.bar imports bar, a package inside foo, if bar is a package. otherwise error. import foo let's you perform foo.bar
from foo import bar makes bar directly accessible

12:35 AM
not in python I mean like in C++

from foo.bar import spam imports spam from the package foo.bar. spam is in this namespace as spam
@Downgoat boost::python is probably better

@Downgoat I have recently been working with boost::python a lot, so I might be able to help

really big request: Idk if its a lot to ask but can someone write a C++ function using the python APIs or w/e which simply returns the imported items?
@DJMcMayhem question: how to install boosy::python so I can jsut do #include 'boost/python.h'

Oh geez, that's a long question
And your spelling is terrible

@DJMcMayhem We've gone over this before.. :/ :P
@DJMcMayhem i just have no idea where to start
I can include the boost stuff locally in my project if that's possible but idk

12:45 AM
i herd you like programming memes?

s/programming/goat

ohnoyoureheretoo?
werealldead

@Downgoat A lot of it depends on your ide and compiler

@KazWolfe oh jesus christ

12:46 AM
@DJMcMayhem meaning?

@Downgoat meaning I couldn't say for your setup

ok :/

To anyone who hasn't please go do your PPCG citizen duty and vote on the meta post regarding the showcase

It's on the front page of meta; can't link from my tablet
I would love for this to be the last popcon discussion but I doubt that will happen

1:00 AM
@Downgoat the normal way

which is?

@DJMcMayhem portal 2?

i need to have everything self-contained in the repo

Just include it as a git submodule or something and use -I and -L appropriately

@quartata I've voted on the question and every single answer. :P
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ oh man, fantastic idea, terrible timing. Can't rn. :/

1:07 AM
:/
why not may I ask?

CMC: rle encode a string.

I think a lot of people just voted on ETH's answer and forgot about it though which bothers me because it didn't really cover the pro-showcase perspective fully
and there were no anti answers yet either

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Headed to a friend's house to watch a movie

oh, have fun!

@DJMcMayhem tell me if you see greenland

1:19 AM
I have a feeling @DJMcMayhem is gonna watch cat in hat movie :P

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC you still there? I need python halp

ok so I am trying to use Boost::Python
so how do I manually specify the lib path in GCC?

-L
Adds to the lib search path.
If I made a challenge that used butteraugil for scoring can I tely on folk to do the scoring locally themselves or should I make a website where they upload the picture and it spits out the score
I'll probably have to require SE OAuth + captcha though because it's fairly COU intensive and I don't want people messing around with it too much
s/tely/rely
s/COU/CPU
Almost as bad as the goat today

1:32 AM
@quartata i'd say the wobsite because is sounds like more fun

This isn't really about fun as it is convenience. It isn't that hard to build butteraugil so I'd only do it if people thought it would really cut into participation
And it would be pretty hard on my C9 workspace. I might have to do an AWS instance instead

1:52 AM
@Downgoat Yes!

question: is there better way to do this:
    RuleData options = new RuleData();
    this->options = &options;
Can I do this->options = &(new RuleData());

@Downgoat that's... c++, right?

yea

@Downgoat new returns a pointer, so the & is not needed

I have no idea, lim x-> 0 x = my c++ level

2:01 AM
@DJMcMayhem oh

@DJMcMayhem I thought you were watching a movie

so RuleData options = new RuleData() is wrong? pls

@Downgoat Also, that movie was terrible. :P

@Downgoat get a better IDE...
with better static code analasys
or integrate it with vim

2:02 AM
@xnor re:this The community is formed by bringing in people from HNQ and popular challenges. Users are far more likely to share their excitement about coding when there are tangible rewards like rep. Yes. people are driven by winning and rep and clout but that's ok. It's how capitalism works.

@DJMcMayhem hey, why do you like cats in hats anyways?

@HelkaHomba yes, i agree people are driven by rep and it does help community building and it would be naive to say otherwise

In addition, I know personally I feel more accountable to create interesting snippets of code for that challenge, since I know that making "boring" snippets will make future upvotes less likely, and thus future progress.

many time i see awful code golf answers that I can only explain as people unaware of what the community is about

@HelkaHomba Yeah some of the snippets are insane and I highly doubt anything like that would have come about without rep incentives or HNQ

2:07 AM
Adderall is essentially caffiene but prescribed. It has the same psychological effect: dopamine release inhibitor
(so does cocaine btw)

Excuse me?

@Downgoat there's really no need to update the vote total listed in my meta question.

i have a hugely upvoted answer on meta to stop upvoting trivial solutions, yet these keep getting tons of upvotes, hence my skepticism of the masses of HNQ as an asset

@quartata ?

@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC that was... random.

2:11 AM
@PhiNotPi i agree, but I voted incorrectly, so i did that so i can change my vote

And adderall and cocaine are actually dopamine reuptake inhibitors so you're wrong

@xnor Quality concerns are a valid issue, and maybe that should be a focus. I admit idk if the answer quality on the Showcase has been good or bad recently, but that'd be a reason to cull answers, not close the challenge.

@HelkaHomba how do you propose answers be culled though?
i see neither a criterion for what should be culled nor a mechanism to do so
(votes, of course, but if quality is an issue, they are themselves a problem)

"Don't fix what isn't broken"

@xnor And, despite sensationalism and FGITWs and all that, I'd bet you anything that my HNQ challenges have inspired at least a few people to join PPCG and become productive members :)

2:14 AM
well, yes, and if we're talking all your challenges that got onto HNQ, there's no doubt about that

@quartata *reuptake, same thing
I forgot the formal name

The rather stringent nature of the showcase doesn't really allow for bad answers only bad languages. Look at the deleted answers you'll see pretty much nothing comared to most pop cons

if the showcase is to remain open, how about removing the snippet length limit at this point?

@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC No it isn't. Reuptake is the absorption of dopamine back into the sending neuron. A reuptake inhibitor causes dopamine to trigger longer

So it's not vote-dependent?

2:16 AM
yes
it might be hard to get votes to get off the ground with few people paying attention to it

@quartata well a brainfart

of course, bad answers can be posted immediately too

I want to see actual code written while being high

The most random thought I have ever seen
@xnor This makes it too broad and also pretty boring.
I kind of would like to hear your thoughts on my answer by the way I thought I broke down what's going on pretty well but I feel I've missed the mark a bit since the upvotes are a little mixed

eh, i don't see what's added by "mention your language and a factoid first to see if people throw a few upvotes", but i think i'm not the target audience

2:20 AM
That's easily solved by starting with the length 1 snippet. I actually think that might not be bad

@quartata sorry, but your answer still strikes me as knotting-oneself-into-contortions
to be fair, the entire rules about pop cons seem to be that, as i've complained about

It is kind of lame to start with just the factoid. I think removing that would solve the issue of begging for upvotes in a sense

so it's basically an entry requirement for discussing them

@xnor The problem really is we have no rules :P

2:21 AM
@xnor Agreed, but that opens up new bags of worms. I'd rather leave it as is and (if they are on topic) wait for a new, more popular "Showcase"-style challenge to come along. New, unique challenges are always out there.

Do you think that the other questions are of value and have the property discussed though? That's the main point I'd like to connect even if you don't support the showcase

which other questions?

Towards the end

@quartata I really think it's far too late to change the challenge format. No factoid may have been better at first but now it would just confuse people

@HelkaHomba It wouldn't affect existing answers.
I was thinking both factoid and snippet 1

2:25 AM
@quartata what to do though about languages that really have nothing to show at short lengths?

@quartata Ah. Well, referendum it on meta if you want. I'm not personally going to change it.

That would require a more fundamental change. but i don't think that has a whole lot to do with whether it should stay open. To answer your question though, tokens?
It's tough to have a definition of tokens that covers every language but a language dependant one is quite easy.

The votes so far are extremely mixed in general... and honestly I have no clue what the community is even supporting. The question suggests locking and is +9/-8, while top-voted answer also leans towards locking / transitioning to an alternative and is +19/-7.

how do you know the vote counts?

@PhiNotpi Eth changed his answer it didn't support locking originally

2:28 AM
@quartata yeah I know, that's a confounding factor

i'm not really sure what to make of it at this point

Which really annoys me. We should roll it back and get him to post a separate answer

@DmitryKudriavtsev it's a privilege for higher-rep users

I know, I have it.
I just don't know how to activate it.

It only has support because previously it was mildly in favor of keeping it and it was first. Kinda peeved although I don't think he did it on purpose

2:29 AM
Click on the current vote total next to the post.

@DmitryKudriavtsev Click on the number.

Ohhhhh.
Thanks :D :D
Is there a way to turn it on permanently?

no

@ETHproductions Can you please roll back your edit and post your new view as a separate answer?
It's confused voting
@PhiNotPi It's annoying that people have downvoted the question :/

A: Proposal to lock the Language Showcase as historically significant

Helka HombaNo, don't close it, don't lock it If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Unless there are severe quality issues, don't let bureaucratic mumbo-jumbo get in the way of a challenge that many people are clearly entertained by on a site that (I believe) is, at-the-core, about entertainment — about enjoyin...

Eth was always part of the "it's off-topic" side, but initially supported creating a rules exception for it / keeping it open, and then decided that it's probably best to close it and find an alternative.

can someone please rehost this image to slimg?
It's blocked on this school computer

It's SE imgur. How can you not see it
All the images on this site use it

Blocked as "adult content"
IKR? This is terrible

Kek.

2:38 AM
@quartata

Well I can't right now but someone else could reupload it somewhere for you. I would rather not edit the post to change it away from SE imgur since it's more official/reliable

Not the post, no
I just meant rehosting it to slimg and posting a link here
nevermind, apparently the imgur is a n invalid image url
i can wget it on my server...
ugh.

@DmitryKudriavtsev work, right?
@DmitryKudriavtsev Use Tor Browser!

It's literally a network of nsa-proof proxies
@DmitryKudriavtsev oh
I thought you were older
hey, you also use uBlock!

2:42 AM
@xnor re: your comment on Helka's. Historical locks are a little more extreme then I think you think they are

all web traffic is tunneled through a process that redirects all blocked requests.

@quartata how do you mean?

Tor Browser, go check it out. @DmitryKudriavtsev Chinese censors can't block it.

A locked post can't be found via searching can't be voted on can't be edited and no new posts

why don't I see an IDE?

2:43 AM
It would essentially neuter the showcase so it isn't the ideal compromise

tor is blocked. if used, the process disables internet access for 24 hrs, the school network blacklists your mac address for a day, and administration is notified.
no ide because school computer. I ssh into my server with PuTTY and use vim.

@DmitryKudriavtsev Tor bridges?
You have the power to customize almost everything

@quartata i wasn't aware of not being searchable; i would prefer that not be the case

Where are you at school? Media center, at lunch or something?

the rest i'm fine with

2:44 AM
@quartata Locked posts still show up in the search results. codegolf.stackexchange.com/search?q=array+of+doubles

@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC Chinese censors also know when you download Tor and have guns.

@quartata i never said it was a compromise :)

@Dennis Wait what?

@DmitryKudriavtsev Tor on usb + pluggable transport +bridges

2:45 AM
@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC I am at home using a school computer

Last time i checked you need a special option like is:locked

@DmitryKudriavtsev download it at home and put it on a usb

we get laptops

@DmitryKudriavtsev get another computer

ugh. do i have to

2:45 AM
How can they block your access AT HOME? VPN?
also why windows

3 mins ago, by Dmitry Kudriavtsev
all web traffic is tunneled through a process that redirects all blocked requests.

@DmitryKudriavtsev yes, and bridges are hidden from tor main

Windows because microsoft campus
I normally use Arch Linux

do you have apersonal comptuer?

yes, it's downstairs, off, and dead
getting it now

2:46 AM
@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC Why are you so pushy about this? If it's a school computer there isn't jack shit he can do it's a sandbox

They locked down the bios, but not pxe.

@quartata windows + zero-days? just kidding

You keep trying to push tor onto people which is really weird

Should I go next-level and ping mınxomaτ? lol

so I can maybe boot an arch iso through pxe, then run chntpw, then log in as admin, then disable the block.

2:48 AM
@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC It's probably a hypervisor so it doesn't matter the kernel.

@quartata locked:1, but no, you don't need it. That might be new.

@quartata hypervisors have zero-days too

@DmitryKudriavtsev Have fun being suspended

everything, esp. microsoft products has zero-days

I know what a hypervisor is, but asking what you are talking about
@quartata I said maybe

2:49 AM
@Dennis Weird.... I swore it dd not show up without it

@DmitryKudriavtsev Nothing, really.

Hmm... I think my main problem with all of my question's downvotes is that the downvotes push it off of the "hot meta posts" list, reducing visibility.

@DmitryKudriavtsev i.sli.mg/WGAbKC.png I'm confused why you couldn't do it yourself though, given that slimg lets you specify the URL of the image.

On my end it said invalid image url.

2:52 AM
Yeah. There's almost 0 chance of getting a good representative sample without asking in chat which is why I've been doing so

also, thanks, but I already rehosted it by wgeting it onto my server.

Holy wow, I see there has been some discussion over the weekend.

@PhiNotPi That's why you should keep the question neutral and post your opinion in an answer. If the question brings up a point that is worth discussing but you disagree with the author's conclusion, you'll probably wind up downvoting.

This is kind of a hot mess now. It isn't really Phi's fault though because what was a very specific question opened up the whole general popcon can of worms

i upvote any reasonably-argued meta post, whether i agree or not

2:55 AM
A can of cons?

i should buy nggyu.net and make it a full page iframe of the embed version of never gonna give you up

pop the can?

> Holy wow

a can of pop?

It frustrates me to no end that we can't resolve this

2:56 AM
just leave it as is. what's all the fuss about. /s

@xnor Can of popcorn

@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC Yes, and?

pop cons are the final frontier of meta

@Geobits I like it.

Final boss of PPCG

2:57 AM
@xnor Just questions or answers too? Voting is different on meta and your upvote may be mistaken for taking a side.

only questions

@quartata I definitely saw this coming, though.

Seriously though we've lost like 4 users to this though it's getting a little old

Who did we lose? And how? I'm not following...

In the specific case of Showcase, it's had a long-standing DV from me, but I never close voted that I remember. Personally, I feel it's off-topic for the site. I never voted it closed because I didn't care enough to get in a close/open thing. Do I think it's actively harmful? Not really, but I don't see how it can really be argued that it's an example of what should be considered "on-topic".
One of my chief complaints is the voting/length tie. By posting a new language, you're basically asking (and getting) upvotes for doing absolutely nothing.

3:02 AM
Nathaniel, Vi, Victor (original code trolling guy) and one whose name I can't remember. And it's because we've drawn this out for like 2 years

JasonC is the fourth maybe?

@Geobits It is a contest just a rather unconventional one.

I'm not saying it isn't a contest.

Part of the problem is that people are looking at it too much from the showcase perspective. The contents of the snippets are what impress me not the language.
@Geobits Programming contests is what we do though.

I can think of plenty of examples of contests that aren't on topic... I mean, hell, we have puzzles in the name of the site, yet look how that's turned out.
The contents of the snippet are impressive, or at least some of them. You could also get equally impressive answers if the question was Do anything you want in 100 bytes. Well, actually, that's pretty much what it is.

3:07 AM
That's a question we do have, and it was closed.

Like I said, I don't think it's actively harmful, unless it starts being used as "hey this is on-topic, so why not mine?". But if it does, I'd rather close it.

Q: Make the most useful program within 100 characters

xfixIn this task, you are allowed make an useful program to do anything you can write within 100 characters. You are allowed to use less characters, but not more. Rules, just to protect from standard loopholes that are no longer funny: Your program cannot access the internet, unless it really has ...

@Dennis Ok fine I take it back. Nothing particularly impressive there :P

I kinda like my CSPRNG, but I'm obviously biased. :P

Welp, can't have a biased moderator. Gonna have to give up that diamond now ;)

3:19 AM

Someone go get shog please.

3:51 AM
Redo Pref: Ctrl+y or Ctrl+Shift+z?

Ctrl+Y has 33% less keys.

But you reach farther

Not sure what you mean.

When right hand on mouse, Ctrl+y can be long stretch for left index finger

Actually, shift+ctrl+z would require more movement.
I would expect normally your left hand is spread out over the left side of the keyboard
And you would have to bunch it up to get 3 fingers on the very left edge.

3:56 AM
I like Ctrl+Shift+Z more for the concept. For things that Ctrl+<key> does, oftentimes, Ctrl+Shift+<key> does in reverse.

But moot point for me, using Dvorak.

It's easier for me to remember that than Ctrl+Y.

@feersum Not so if you're doing mostly mouse work and only using keyboard for undoing and redoing (e.g. graphics/video editing)

@HelkaHomba Ctrl-r

it's disgraceful that jon skeet hasn't reached a million rep yet

4:01 AM
@HelkaHomba What about times when you are using the keyboard? Would you have different undo shortcuts for different applications?

@feersum Maybe that's the reason they are different! :o e.g. Premiere Pro is shift z but Notepad++ is y

Hey @HelkaHomba I accidentally a TNT

I wrote a poem inspired by the latest meta discussion:
"We must stop the pop-con!" the lock-bloc proposed.
"No hope it's in-scope, so the post must be closed!
No space for a showcase of PPCG,
where votes for the top are just not meant to be!"

An opposing voice spoke: "Why fix what ain't broke?
We're not trolling code, but this brings in the folks.
As pop-cons may go, there are cons and there's pros.
It's what voters chose, so why step on our toes?"

So go shop for some popcorn, pop open some pop.
'Cause the pop-con commotion is not gonna stop!

@xnor *applause*
On an entirely different note, I just got this question from the Google Surveys app: "If you could vote for a Superhero to be President who would you choose? Be specific and provide the details on why this Superhero has the right qualities for the job!"

My answer: "Mr. Incredible. He acknowledged that he couldn't do everything on his own, that he needed help. Humility is a rare quality for one of the world's strongest men to have. Plus, he has a great way of dealing with bureaucracy and excellent family values. He knows how to deal with overpowered children, a useful quality for dealing wi

The problem with locks is one that I fear.
It's something I hold quite near and quite dear.
My smile will vanish (and turn to a frown),
When I find a post that I can't vote down.

I click on the button; it just doesn't work.
It's not like my duties are something I shirk.
But just like the icon of Downy the Goat,
I feel "y u do dis" when I cannot vote ;_;

@Geobits That was beautiful
@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC It's a long story, lol. Originally I was DJMcMayhem, but I wanted to change it to an anagram, and the only thing I could think of was "my ham DJ". So Alex started calling me "DR ham jam", so from then on all of my usernames had ham in them. Then I changed it to "DR Green Eggs and Ham DJ", so downgoat started making Dr suess puns and I just played along

So it's actually a short story? :P
I don't know why anyone would need a reason to like Dr Seuss though >_>

It took a while to type on a crappy phone keyboard
Agreed, Seuss is awesome

5:20 AM
ok i got my good laptop.
switching to it now

@xnor Con = contest, pro = protest? :P

Happy Halloween

How did this get five upvotes
Also the C++ equivalent of ord got four upvotes
@DJMcMayhem 0/10 not an anagram
@HelkaHomba Ctrl+R (Otherwise Ctrl+Shift+Z because it's way easier than Ctrl+Y)

@ASCII-only I know but my username doesn't have any good anagrams

@DJMcMayhem Sure it does: Sear My Menu

@DJMcMayhem "loading..."

@Geobits Your jokes are impressively painful

You mean cafe lamp?
@DJMcMayhem Thanks!

Clearly when jokes like that are going over my head, I'm too tired.
Good night

That or too short. Probably the tired thing though.

The spine does compress over the course of a day.

Good point. So maybe both.
New theory! People get tired after a long day because their spines compress, so they're breathing very slightly denser air, lower to the ground.
No way anyone could find holes in that theory.

i'll tell ya what i want...

@Geobits There's fewer holes in your skullvatar
What I really really want

:D
I needed to hear that like I need another hole in my head.
