Although now that I think about it, simultaneous printing might be a bit of a problem

@MartinBüttner but these were peaks.

ummm... yes?

I just peeked at piqued peaks.

hehe
look for tech nature art science aww
and misc

2:03 PM
Will do later. Must waste time being productive for now.

@Doorknob I like it!

k

o.O I forgot to check xkcd this morning... how did that happen...

@Geobits You can get the whole collection if you like.

@randomra The goal is to get healthy. Last year everyone signed up for weight watchers and anyone who met their goal got a full reimbursement from the company. This year they are buying everyone a pedometer.

2:05 PM
this is amazing

I'm thinking about an "optimize nicknames challenge."

1 hour ago, by Calvin's Hobbies
Now I want to make a minimal prefix challenge with PPCG user names. It's probly too close to this though.

I think Tyler, TX has an off switch. It's called "snow".

Yeah, but I have some ideas for improvements.
More details coming in about an hour from now.
:/

@Rainbolt That seems about right for any place I've been in the south.
They close schools when there's a quarter inch forecast :D

2:09 PM
Everyone I know has off except for me. And I drove to work with zero problem. The roads are salted. I don't understand what the big deal is.

If you consider yourself an average-to-good driver, imagine how many people are worse at it.

In my experience, everyone considers themselves an above average driver.

ninja'd hard

For realz

Sure, but I'm really an above-average driver ;)

2:12 PM
My 2006 SUV doesn't have a dent on it. If that's any indication...

@Rainbolt just means you're not getting enough practice

I'm the only person I know (in person) that's been driving for 10+ years without getting a ticket or causing an accident. I don't know if that puts me above the average nationwide, but certainly in my circle.

My workplace is on this giant hill, and two days ago the hill was totally covered in ice. So I waited at the top for the guy at the bottom to turn left, then slid all the way to the bottom and right out into the highway.
@Geobits I have 7 speeding tickets. I don't think that makes me a bad driver though.

Not necessarily. I speed plenty, I'm just careful around cops :P

But yea if someone was coming down that highway they'd have hit me. I need new tires apparently.
Theyd have hit me going 10 mph though. Nobody was driving very fast

2:15 PM
I like driving around here when it snows. It's like a ghost town.

Give me one more year and I'll be in your circle as far as accidents go. But not as far as tickets go.
At least I have no expired stickers tickets.

I've been in an accident, just not caused one. A couple years ago some idiot slammed into me as I was stopped at a red light.

what do you do with 13 stack overflow stickers? :/ (dimensions ~12.5x4cm ... that's 5x1.5 inches, I guess)

hi

trying to farm stars? :P

2:23 PM
@MartinBüttner I've got a few of them, too. They're in a drawer :)

yeah, that's roughly the best use I've come up with for them so far

hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi

no.
3
(to a German, this reads like sniggering by the way)

I use my mug and shirt that came with the stickers, though. I just can't find things to deface.

oh yeah, I really love their new shirts

2:28 PM
Hi Hi Hi Hi Hi Hi Hi Hi
how are you getting the swags ?

@MartinBüttner Are you German?

yes (I swear we talked about this before :D)

@Optimizer A silly contest or two on meta.

I don't think we did. I was always confused about you since your profile says that you're an Englishman.

@Geobits instead of a mug I got stack overflow "cocoa stencils" though (no clue, what you call these things to put cocoa in some shape on your cappuccino)
@FUZxxl no it says I'm based in London ;)

2:30 PM
Cocoa stencils < mug. That sucks.

lol
yeah especially if you don't drink coffee

i don't use mugs much.

my girlfriend does, though... maybe she likes them

I usually drink green tea out of glasses.

Doesn't that mess up the lenses?

2:31 PM
:D

not really

@FUZxxl I thought we must have talked about it, because I'm sure I have wondered how I never met someone from Berlin who plays Go

hm… that must have been a long time ago.

I am baffled by the number of answers (and even that answers exist) on the sierpinski challenge

@MartinBüttner I've always said "snickering" instead of "sniggering". Probably because the latter could get you killed in the US if you said it in the wrong place at the wrong time.

2:34 PM
England has only contributed one good thing to cuisine, that is, Worchestershire Sauce.

@Rainbolt I didn't even know that existed
@FUZxxl shepherd's pie is pretty decent, but that might be Irish

American English: linky
British English: linky

we had that in school sometimes
it was okay

@Rainbolt Huh, you live ~200 miles away from me.
I wonder which PPCG user (or SE user in general) lives closest to me.

@Doorknob You live in Houston?

2:36 PM
Yup

Damn I am good lol.
I have family in Houston

@Doorknob The Wobbuffet lives in Houston too, according to his profile. He might be the closest.

@ProgramFOX Haha, he doesn't count. He goes to my school.

... xD

there's your answer.
I live in Berlin.
Berlin ist wunderbar.

2:39 PM
Berlin is chocolate.

So closest to you, but not closest to you? Unclear what you're asking.

@Rainbolt TIL.

Should have sandboxed that question.

Haven't seen these before.
I generally dislike Cadbury chocolate. It's too sweet.

I think he means closest as in dearest.
Who on PPCG is dear to Doorknob

2:42 PM
@Doorknob what do you plan to study if at all?

It's pretty vague. I'll just downvote it and move along.

@Rainbolt Not an objective winning criterion.

unclear scoring rules.

I freaking hate crap like this.
#hackdiv, #NormalDiv {/*Parameters - non-semantic div necessary for Menu system to display correctly in IE*/
    display:block;
    margin:0;
    padding:0;
    z-index:3000;
}

and that's why I don't do web-design

2:45 PM
I love when names start with hack :D

Now I have two options here. I can hackdiv my own change, or I can fix the real issue.

Also, I'm freaking untalented.

@FUZxxl You mean in college / upper school?

If I fix the real issue (kill hackdiv with fire) I have to go check every single page to make sure I didn't screw something up.

@Geobits Relevant profile picture.

2:46 PM
That was the idea :P

@Doorknob I'm not sure about your schooling system but I referred to university.

@Rainbolt Translation: "I freaking hate IE." i.e. every web developer's thoughts ever.

I don't hate IE actually. It motivates me to find a solution that is both simple and works in every browser.

@FUZxxl Ah. Not sure yet.

Although, every time I say "It works in Chrome." I get in trouble with the testers.

2:48 PM
@Doorknob veterinary psychology, maybe?

@MartinBüttner Is... that even a thing?

You know, I just realized that we are motivating browsers to break things. Think about it. They add an extra feature that only their browser supports, and in return, we use their browser. Meanwhile, IE doesn't add tons of fancy stuff, and we boycott it like crazy.
If every browser supported the same markup, then every page would at least not be broken.

@Doorknob I think there are actually people doing this, but I don't think it's a well-recognised science...
I guess the closest "real" science would be behavioural biology or something like that

Doorknob has posted 3000 posts in this room total. I've posted 13000. Can anyone beat that?

@Rainbolt You want omelettes, you break eggs :P

2:52 PM
Ooooh. Martin has 28k.

Not sure. Where can I see these statistics?

I found a new toy. Click on your name and hover over the rooms.

@Rainbolt no need to hover
bottom right corner of each room panel

What's the "room panel"?

well the little box for the room
anyway, you can sort the users here by "frequently in this room" chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/info/240/the-nineteenth-byte

2:54 PM
@jpjacobs should really expand his J answer to the showcase post

Looks biased towards recent (as in last few months) users

@Rainbolt the more I think about this, the more terrifying I find it

Nah, it's only more than twice the next user.

All hail @MartinBüttner, PPCG overlord.

While you guys are analyzing things does anyone want to figure out how close I am to socratic? :P I just need to know how many times I posted multiple questions in a day, but I can't be bothered to count.

@Rainbolt just found this ... thought you might be interested
@Calvin'sHobbies data.SE?

The profile redesign that's coming up soon will tell you this. (It's already on meta, and it's really fancy)

wow

I'm too slow.
@MartinBüttner I used to work at a school for "gifted kids" and they used Minecraft to teach there.

3:07 PM
@Doorknob That does't always show Socratic/Curious/Enlightened, just whatever they decide you're closest to. For me it's Electorate on meta.

Was Minecraft the "gift"?

@Geobits If you click the little pencil icon next to it, it shows you a list.

Very nice...

@Doorknob You should take a look at J

@FUZxxl J the programming language?

3:09 PM
@Geobits lol, that self-restraint

I've got 91 questions but only 75 on the way to socratic :/

@Calvin'sHobbies data.SE updates every sunday

@Doorknob Yes.

@Calvin'sHobbies Just to check, is my use of i to push -1 okay for Sierpinski?

@Doorknob Start here

3:12 PM
@MartinBüttner That article is in a weird place. I wonder who the target audience is.

game designers, I think (haven't read it yet)

Oh, that makes more sense now.

@Sp3000 Looks fine. (I'm never too concerned about minor loopholes/gray areas if the submission isn't winning.)

Ahaha okay :P

Testing
Oh, fixed.
Wow. I've never seen snowflakes that were larger than an inch. This is really weird.

3:20 PM
larger than an inch? O.O

Aww. Now the snowflakes are little again.
The snowflakes were huge

I think I need some food

sigh the effort required to avoid sexual innuendos

3:50 PM
Hah. The abnormally large snowflakes have returned. This is an awesome day.
Funny how much sleet sucks while snow is just awesome (to a southerner anyway)

Yea, snow is only awesome until there's feet of it.

Rain wipes our snow away before we can enjoy it :(

@Geobits Feet of snow? Sounds awesome!

>_<

Those feet are unusually realistic.
Except that one ankle is larger

4:00 PM
Maybe they are real feet of a Giant which got frozen and were removed to stop spreading the freeze.

Q: KOTH : Monster Hunter

ThraxIntroduction To celebrate Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate launch on new 3DS (February 13th), here's a King of the Hill themed on this game. You are a novice hunter, who'll take part in a tournament consisting of 5 consecutives hunts. At the end of these hunts, hunters will be ranked depending on the ...

I like his King-Of-The-Hills :D

I learned from Martin's comment on it

We are very close to 3000 questions!

@Rainbolt which part?

@Doorknob By what count? Front page shows 3009.

4:12 PM
@Geobits not counting locked questions
(i.e. the count in the questions list)
or front page -13

Really? /questions shows 2997'

(and front page isn't updated yet, i.e. doesn't include monster hunter)

Ah, right. An artifact of [code-trolling]

A better count (IMO) is open questions, which is 2648 according to search.

@Geobits agreed

4:14 PM
My front page shows monster hunter and 3009 ;)

@Geobits if you wait half an hour (or so), that number will show 3010 even if no further question is posted
that number is cached somewhere else (area 51 I guess) which updates only every so often

Half an hour? That's like 400 hours!

Not that I know of. It could be similar to something I've heard, enabling easy recall/variation, but I'm unaware of the specifics if that is the case.

I'm still not convinced that you are a kid.
If I could program as well as you can when I was your age, I would be making a lot more right about now.

I'm still not convinced that you're a block of dirt.

On the other hand, I am clearly a doorknob.

I am clearly a downvote?

This is clearly a question?

Hmm... I'm skeptical.

This?

I?

Spoiler: It's not alive.

That reminds me, I haven't been snowboarding in a couple of years

did anyone actually read the spec for Monster Hunter? this is the cooperative KotH we've been waiting for

Yes, I did :)

Oh hey the bus I'm on finally arrived

4:39 PM
That's the first bus I've heard of that has a Doorknob :)
@MartinBüttner AGR decreases by 30 each turn.

@TheBestOne so?

Haha. Some guy with a tractor plowed all of the snow on the street outside our window and totally blocked the entrance to this entire neighborhood.
So now this entire neighborhood is outside in an angry mob and this guy apparently doesn't even work for the city.
Did I mention that Tyler, TX has an off switch?
Inch of snow. Whole city shuts down. Except for this guy and his tractor.

@MartinBüttner I'm not sure how "cooperative" it really is. Sure, the object is to take down the monster (together), but all you're really trying to do is maximize damage while not dying. I don't see much of an option to help/hinder others.
Maybe something to do with the aggression, but I'm not seeing how exactly that works.

If everyone is waiting for a real cooperative KotH I can cook one up.
What exactly is the goal? Reward people for helping each other?

Greetings

May I disturb your conversation to ask you your opinion?

4:44 PM
Opinions are what we do in here.

Just don't ask how I feel about Tips questions.

I've written the very basic specification of an attemp to make a golf language

@Rainbolt He's just crabby.

Put it onto GitHub and ask for feedback.

@Rainbolt I can hear you thinking "earthlings" ;)
2

@Rainbolt "language", not "challenge"

Do you think this would be a good language or the code would be too large?

I like the names :D

I haven't made any code regarding the implementation

@IsmaelMiguel You mispelled Comparisons as Comparissons

4:47 PM
Probably
I hate Google Chrome

Confitional execution = Conditional execution
Haha. I like this guy. He comes in here an denounces Chrome lol.

I'm not a fan of a built-in quine operator

This crap has a poor dictionary

I will stop making bad jokes and let others actually critique your stuff.

Can I see 1) hello world 2) fibonnaci 3) prime generator?

4:49 PM
Wait a second. Doesn't Google Chrome have spell check built in to the browser?
Seems like it'd be your best friend.

> This crap has a poor dictionary

from what I've seen, spell check is only an enemy to the programmer

Mipelld wrd -> Millipede wed

have you really already exhausted ASCII, that you need §çÇ for operators? these are hard to type for most people and will potentially count for two bytes.
even worse for ºª

4:52 PM
i.imgur.com/PJ8o5HS.png byte count (for @Ismael's reference)

If they were obscure operators it wouldn't be so bad, but these are for common things like equality.

okay, the other two are also two bytes
@Geobits even so, I'd prefer two ASCII characters over Unicode (like CJam does), just from a usability standpoint

The mnemonical shape of the symbols helps you remember their function!

I'm not sure what good that is if I remember them but can't type them
but really, the thing I dislike most about it is the two built-in quine operators... otherwise it sounds like an interesting concept

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see the mnemonic for ç as 'equal' and Ç as 'not equal'.

4:56 PM
damn no one got my APL joke

I think he may have been kidding

The other comparisons I can kinda see.
Damn. My detector needs a tuneup.

I've really exhausted all the characters I can come up with.

@IsmaelMiguel Overall it sounds interesting. Some more examples and an interpreter (even if not complete) would help more for critique.

All those are windows-1252 characters
I've been upfront and made the specification first
