12:00 AM
well yeah, that interface...

Still, now we know.

I mean, it's definitely more sensible that it doesn't work, but the rules really don't make that clear, I'd say (and moreover, I don't even see why they mention the Clap specially in the first place, instead of just using (c in all sequences)

I note that Ravenblack does use lower-case c in their rules list.

ah interesting
well I've amended the spec
thanks for helping me out with testing that

No problem. I'll delete my comment now, because it's not of lasting value.

12:05 AM
I'll write up the test cases soon
I'm planning to post Caesar Cypher Mania tomorrow

Well, I'm off to bed now, so goodnight.

goodnight!

12:29 AM
@MartinBüttner How on Earth did 53 happen? I only upvoted D:

well someone else might have downvoted, or it was due to hitting the rep cap, which is more likely
I'm pretty sure I hit the rep cap with an upvote that was reduced to 3
btw, I managed to work my way up to 48 seconds over the past few days... hexagon is within reach ;)

:o nice!

also, I've been playing it without sound for the last few days, and it's a lot less stressful ^^
(I thought I'd need the auditive feedback to better ignore the pulsating and rotating, but it turns out I don't)

Oh? Interesting...
I thought the same

12:53 AM
after 9 hours...

:O huzzah!

pretty cool, at the end, there's like a "cutscene" where all levels are played back in reverse (without the cursor), such that you see each possible pattern emerging from the centre... and they also play the corresponding soundtrack backwards... and it actually sounds fairly decent

Now replay and beat 60 seconds on Hyper Hexagonest :P
Oh? hmmm that sounds pretty cool

"Delete Local Content..."
@Sp3000 what do you mean... like... do it again?

Makes me want to try that if I wasn't only half awake
You can replay hyper hexagonest and it won't stop the game at 60 seconds
...apparently

12:55 AM
oh that's what you mean
yeah, no thanks
actually it didn't stop the game

:P

it entered black-and-white mode, but I died on the second bar

Ah k
Might have remembered wrong

on to the next game

Which is...?

12:58 AM
lol, trying to decide
probably bit trip runner 2
I think all the other ones I'd like to try right now, my girlfriend would probably like too, so I'll wait with those until I'm back in London ^^

Ahaha k :P I gave up on the Bit Trip series since it's the obstacles that are to the beat
(making you move off-beat to dodge)

I finished the first one, but it had some ugly parts
huh, I actually got 77% of the achievements... I wonder which ones I bailed out on...
"Complete a level in one sitting" (a level actually being a world)
"Beat all challenges on perfect difficulty"
oh and four more of those for the separate worlds
yeah no

:/

still, it was good fun ^^

@MartinBüttner when you wake up - I found the Hats API . So I will be sending the sandbox proposal for my challenge today.

8:12 AM
@Optimizer Cool!

8:44 AM
Martin took over Fox account ? o.O

Lol, no :P

9:04 AM
@Doorknob冰 thanks for the ping! Very interesting discussion. I share this code base with an Android app (java 1.6) and the java.util.Base64 is from java 1.8, but since you mentioned I realize I can move this utility method to a 1.8 project. Big thanks to @feersum. Thanks also to @FryAmTheEggman and @Rainbolt for good advice on how to post codegolf questions. As you may have noticed, I mostly hang out on StackOverflow.
Also, I'm not sure how to solve this using Java strings since strings in Java are 16 bits and not all 2-byte combinations are legal characters, right?

9:44 AM
@TheDoctor Around? I need your IRC skills.
Nevermind, I think I found it.
I was using /msg ChanServ RECOVER #mychannel while it was not necessary.
And that also changed some channel modes.

10:07 AM
warm welcome question has now become my most voted question :3 ^^

10:47 AM
guys, on the iOS app, how do you sort answers by active?
(alternatively, how do you get to a particular sandbox post in the app?)

11:12 AM
in Shadow's Den on Meta Stack Exchange Chat, 19 secs ago, by Shadow Wizard
@ProgramFOX that's the default sort

it definitely isn't
in the sandbox, the top voted ones are at the top

11:25 AM
hi
has there been a code golf question to tell if the sum of fractions equals 1 exactly?
I didn't find it if there has

not that I'm aware, but Peter is our duplicate detector. post it in the sandbox, and he'll tell you if it is a duplicate ^^

:)
my code-challenge question had a flurry of activity and then nothing
I wonder if they just thought of all the good ideas really quickly
and there aren't any more.. that would seem surprising though
or Keith Randall just scared them off with his elite coding skills :)
@MartinBüttner I need to think of a challenge that you would be interested in

@Lembik I don't think so. You might want to think about what you want to explicitly exclude, because fold + and test is pretty boring.
As for the recent challenge: I didn't bother with it because I had a sneaking suspicion that if I spent 30 minutes thinking about it I would end up voting to close as a duplicate of one of your earlier questions rather than posting an answer.

@PeterTaylor in that case thank you!
@PeterTaylor If I can be completely honest, I slightly screwed up the question
@PeterTaylor although maybe I should admit it now there is a bounty
@PeterTaylor I meant for there to be different probabilities for the -1,0,1 which means you aren't just counting
I am not sure why I have this reputation for asking similar questions though. According to codegolf.stackexchange.com/users/9206/… I asked a related question in November and another one in May

What is the blue circled thingy -

11:36 AM
that's not too bad is it?

@Optimizer Seems like my hat flew away...

no, ur hat is still on you, even in that pic.
seems like someone threw another hat towards you

@PeterTaylor when you say fold + and test, is that for language that handle fractions natively?
languages

@Optimizer Or the system made a mistake when drawing the hats. You can click on the second hat, then you'll see who owns it.

11:38 AM
you only

Heh, then it's probably a drawing glitch in the system.

@Lembik You asked three questions in May, all of which were closely related, and the last of them is the one which I suspected the new one essentially dupes.
+ for rationals will be implemented for some languages natively. For most other languages, + is likely to be the most interesting part of the answer.

Q: Caesar-Cypher-Mania

Martin BüttnerThe Caesar Cypher is a very simple substitution cypher where each letter is shifted by a fixed offset (looping around Z to A). We can also a Caesar cypher for the set of printable ASCII characters. These are the 95 characters from code points 0x20 to 0x7E. For a given offset d, we map the code po...

@Lembik why? :P

@PeterTaylor re: +. Right, I need to exclude built in addition of fraction adding
@PeterTaylor right it is more related to that last may one than I wanted (although the symmetries are different which is where almost all the non-coding work is as are the bit tricks). As I said, my intention was to but probabilities on -1,0,1 that meant you had to do more than count.
s/but/put
it wasn't until I got the first answer that I realised I had forgotten to specific the probabilities!
then it was too late
@MartinBüttner Because you give great answers!

sometimes...
not so much with mathematical fastest code challenges
@Lembik you may also want to think about if you want to allow built-in LCM (although you can always just multiply up all the denominators)

11:45 AM
@MartinBüttner True...those darn built ins :)
@MartinBüttner I am thinking of doing some fastest-code/code-golf questions where your score is divided by the length of the code
golf-speed :) Although we may need a better name

code-challenge
this stuff is hard to balance sometimes, because it can easily happen, that a naive implementation still outscores a clever fast one, just because it can be so much shorter

@MartinBüttner yes I can see that
@MartinBüttner it would be nice though if it works to level out different languages a bit.. or encourages short clever solutions
or encourages the use of high level languages

12:03 PM
Oooh Caesar's up
Hmmm I wonder if I can do anything with upper/lower case...

oh god. Someone is serial upvoting me :/
(maybe)
@MartinBüttner it would not loop around from Z to A, right ?

@Optimizer you mean for the challenge? no it would loop around to ~ to space.

yes, you wrote from Z to A, no ?

when explaining the normal caesar cypher (for letters)
I'm only defining how it works for printable ASCII afterwards

I see

12:08 PM
clarified

normal caesar transform should give "efgh" for input "abcd 4" right ?

ok cool

12:30 PM
posted my own solution as an example

12:41 PM
Why would you do that :/
at least wait for 1 or 2 answers before posting your own.

why not? to show that it's possible.

it is possible
just that now noone else cannot get that badge

I did the same for the polyquine challenge: codegolf.stackexchange.com/a/37465/8478
what badge?

first to post and accepted and 10 votes

ah, Enlightened
honestly, that one is really unlikely on PPCG anyway

12:44 PM
no, I would have had the solution in CJam in 10 more minutes

and then you would have been beaten by Pyth or something... or maybe even by user23013 or sudo also using CJam

yeah, but at least there was a chance

sorry if it's that important to you...

1:12 PM
Ooh xkcd chart's got a bounty
That reminds me, polyominoes
... I really don't have a choice ;D

@Sp3000 well you could just let it expire
but that wouldn't be very nice :D

:P
Bit disappointing, but oh well
feersum gets the rep :P

I've put up so many bounties that didn't yield anything...

Well I'll bookmark the narrative chart one as something to do if I'm bored :P

1:27 PM
ughh office :(

*work*

# is not a comment in ruby ?

lol ?

forgot about my own rules... I meant to do that with strings

1:29 PM
:D
LOL
so you post a answer, making a badge impossible for others and that answer is violating your own spec :D

I'm sure if the answer is deleted, it doesn't count for the badge

no idea.
anyways, I am not gonna be the first one on this one.

@Optimizer sigint

searches
isn't that equivalent of killing the process ?

it's not SIGKILL
quoting the spec "but SIGINT and SIGPIPE are fine"

1:44 PM
hm, I am not aware of all the differences, so I guess its okay.
you have to use q instead of l
l waits for some input before starting the program

as does q
you can pipe it into the program

oh. I was trying in online one. q works , but not l there

yours only works if the STDIN contains the newline.
Try echo "abc" | java -jar cjam.jar yes.cjam
also did you really have to copy my entire post and just delete two characters...

p prints on newline automatically.

but includes quotes, no?

1:49 PM
ahh...
The text had to be same , so y not save the effort of typing ? The program had 7 bytes different.

btw, I had just tried out using e| but it's the same bytes

I know.
its just a different way of doing it.

@MartinBüttner 111 awarded.

yeah . But I have 1 ;)

@PeterTaylor yeah, but compare that to Nice Answer

1:59 PM
@PeterTaylor Also, you are not participating in Winter Bash ?

Peter is immune to the joys of gamification. ;)

Nice Answer is bronze; Good Answer is a fairer comparison, although it is still 8 times more common.

every 30 nice answers, 1 gets Enlightened
Can't say if that can be called common or super rare

No. I think that the hats are pointless at best and counterproductive to site quality at worst.

Peter made me believe that the hats api does not work for other users.
(mostly because of my laziness only)

2:05 PM
@Optimizer Bearing in mind that at most one answer to a given question can be Enlightened and that the highly upvoted answers tend to cluster (especially in questions which hit the HNQ), 1 in 30 seems quite good.

cool

how many different arrays of length n are there with x 1, y -1s and n -(x+y) 0s?

whats with you and arrays and combinatronics :P

n!/(x! y! (n-x-y)!) ?

@Sp3000 thanks!
@Optimizer I haven't solved any of my problems yet!
I am sticking to this theme until I do :)

2:12 PM
@Optimizer combinatronics? :D

not the right word ?

it's a great word!

combinatorics on computers
@Sp3000 you know I did google that but I can't see your lovely formula there
I am clearly being stupid
where is the (n-x-y)! part?

If you call n-x-y=z
Then it's just (x+y+z)!/(x! y! z!)

2:13 PM
oh!
thanks.. hangs head in shame

:P
I wonder why they don't teach binomial like that

somehow I feel my Caesar Cypher mania answer is wrong.

i.e. instead of n!/(k! (n-k)!) you do (m+n)!/(m! n!)
I guess you lose the "n choose k" intuition

/me wonders if @ProgramFOX still needs help

@TheDoctor No, I figured it out. I was using RECOVER, but I just had to set +O user mode to automatically give me op privs when joining.

2:19 PM
ok

Managed to get Fascinating Ma'am by Waffling the 95 ASCII challenge :o
Martin and Optimizer have too many hats though :P

by the way... ppcg >> math.se :)
I asked the same question on math.se chat as an experiment

Argh, I lost my 2nd place on the Winterbash leaderboard.

Math SE probably gets too many of those types of questions :P

possiblyh :)

2:25 PM
the yes question is the quickest (of recent times) to get 5 answers, and its still not less than 30 minutes

I don't think anybody will be getting that
It'd have to be, say, "print <blah>" and you'd have to race both getting enough answers before 30 min and being closed

not here.
:D
i think people will close that faster (within seconds) to get that hat
:P

Have you guys gotten that one yet? :P

some have. not me.
so ... :P

10 reviews? I must be blind or you guys must be fast, cos I never see any

2:32 PM
I still have 2 to go
so you are not the only one blind :P

Leaderboard says you already have the 10 reviews one?

what, really ?
oh, just now
something seems wrong:
oh, Aztec is not counted in your hats count.

You and Martin and your On the Road Selfie'ing :P

2:50 PM
@Optimizer why?
@Sp3000 you've got so many days left...

:P

@Sp3000 I've got a userscript that refreshes the review page, and keep a pinned tab open

Ahaha no wonder

since they aren't shown on the front page any more, I kept forgetting

Dedicated :P

3:09 PM
@MartinBüttner it has only 8 reviews. not 10
oh. the why? question was pointing to something else :/
so - because I came up with that answer on pure luck :P

3:30 PM
So, If I get serial voted by someone. like 50 rep. and then hit repcap that day, with wasted 40 rep. Do they only remove the 10 rep while removing serial voted reps ?
@Doorknob冰 ^

Serial votes count towards your rep cap. If it gets reversed, you'll just miss out on that much rep for the day. I recall Martin discussing this before.

he did not say anything about wasted rep
IIRC

This was months ago

oh

He's been getting serial voted for a looooong time. I think it's odd, because he isn't particularly confrontational.

3:33 PM
confrontational as in ?

@Optimizer how do you think the top-voted answer on PPCG ever was conceived? :P

the 2014 one ?
how does one see the top voted answer here ?

data.SE
whoa, my vigil answer has climbed to the 6th spot on that list by now O.O

we merely have 75 or so great answers ? :(

3:39 PM
wow, and I just read a comment 6*9=42

@es1024, in your marbelous interpreter, you can't enter anything in STDIN while a program is running, can you?

and then a comment, that's so base 10 of you

@Optimizer every base is base 10

huh ?
sorry, my sense of humor is very one way

well

3:42 PM
b in base b

16 in base 16 is 10
or more general
b in base b is 10

ah

I thought it was funny...

but I think the two comments do not mean that at all ;)

@Optimizer fair point

3:44 PM
still not sure of that so base 10
maybe its binary

13
6*9=42 in base 13(dec)

10 in binary
base 2
get it ?

@Optimizer I should, my joke was a general version of your joke.

but then every base is not base 10 :P

@Optimizer Either I've lost you, or you've lost me.

3:48 PM
well..
@MartinBüttner you answer 1 quesiton in CJam, I answer another. your's question has lesser upvotes than mine's still your's have more than mine :/
looks like the question takes all the attention in my case :P

well in that case I'm glad of the author of the higher voted answer and the higher voted question :P
but yeah, voters vote weirdly...

I curse you that rep cap hits you and around 200 rep gets wasted

rep cap will hit me, and I won't even reach 200 rep with it :/

no.. rep cap hits you and after that you get 20 upvotes or equivalent

yeah, I got that

3:53 PM
ok. then the curse is applied

but if I do hit the rep cap, I'll be more annoyed, that it'll hit me at +100 ^^

I don't get that

@MartinBüttner I hope your bountied question gets some well-deserved answers

@overactor write one... :P

mine is not showing any signs

3:55 PM
@Optimizer I've offered a bounty... that doesn't count against the rep cap

oh!

@MartinBüttner I argued for graphical output in marbelous, I seem to remember you were against...
:-)

is Marbelous the only language you know now? :P

Trying to Caesar in Python's being pretty painful

@MartinBüttner It's the only one I golf in, it seems

3:59 PM
@overactor my question is not a code golf :P

@overactor can you draw the warm welcome hat in marbelous ? That will be fun.
do you have to print pixel by pixel ?

@Optimizer his point was that Marbelous doesn't have graphical output yet

oh

he could write an SVG file of course
(or any other file type)

They cursed us. Esoteric programmer they called us. They cursed us, and drove us away. And we wept, Marbelous, we wept to be so alone. And we forgot the syntax of C++... the functions of python... the philosophy of JavaScript. We even forgot ... Java. Marbelous.
@MartinBüttner I guess that could work

4:04 PM
"we wept as marbles came out of our eyes";

@Sp3000 nice answer!

I need to fix it though, it seems
slightly wrong

what's wrong?

Woop nothing's wrong, I just tested the programs the wrong way around
I wonder if anybody can come up with something that doesn't rely on having two halves which get pseudo-commented out
But that'd be insane

4:21 PM
yeah, that's what I'm really hoping for :D

Good luck. With that.
:P

Well you can use different languages, I tried a bit with pyth->python but I couldn't really get anywhere

Next task: Java -> Java :D

^ An exact translation of Seppuku

Caesar and yes on HNQ hmmm

4:29 PM
hats is gone :(

@Optimizer sorry
@FryAmTheEggman yeah if anyone manages that, I'm sure they'll have to use different languages

not your fault :)

well, questions do push each other out of the HNQ

mine got pushed out of first page because of yes one
the amount of answers on that one

I'm still mad that pyth doesn't have a way to just read stdin without waiting for user >_<

4:36 PM
<<< ?

That would require including that token along with a call to pyth as the program :/
(also I think it might still wait if it is empty?)

@FryAmTheEggman really? doesn't input() work if you pipe something into the program?

I didn't try because then you'd need to include the pipe, which is way too long
Never really tried piping an empty string into a python program that uses input()

why would you? it's just a different way of providing stdin

But it would hang if you didn't run it like that?

4:48 PM
even C code waits for user input if you do getc or similar and havne't piped something to STDIN

Which doesn't mimic yes

hm, fair enough

Yeah, pyth dies if the pipe is empty
