The thing with Fred Bear was just to have this question on here. It's a known fact (for insiders at least) that he was missing half of a finger on his right hand.
Fred Bear is famous cause he was the guy who got the "archery ball" rolling.
In 1939 the side business of archery demanded so much of Bear’s time, he decided to devote himself to it; and in 1940 Bear Products split into two companies, where Piper retained control of the automotive business and Bear retained the archery business. This is when the Bear Archery Company was officially born.

This was no accident, and Bear’s business didn’t grow organically. Bear tenaciously promoted the sport of archery.

“I had to not only make a product, but create a market for it,” he said.

Btw... 5 questions/day :)
The Base Camp
"Answering questions about bears since 2010"

Has never been more true :D

@OddDev lol yeah Fred Bear aside there are 47 bear questions.
Morning all

8:47 AM
@OddDev We get a lot of bear related question
Often about how to not die in their presence! :)
Morning
@Aravona I finally got that answer finished
Seems a bit gimiky to me. Solves a problem I didn't know existed. I just use a high vis vest
It was free o_O

9:07 AM
@Liam I got it freem from a promo wirh Volvo at work yeah. It's usually £10 a can. And they're small cans.
It'll work on the dogs stuff and wooly hats though. I don't think I'd purchase it ever. But it was free so it'll be a fun gimmick like you say!

outdoors.stackexchange.com/q/10038/3313 is this on topic?! Seems on the hazy side of outdoors related... I mean it's not really related to an activity. It's just do birds do this.
@RoryAlsop Do questions about an animal abilities count as on topic?

@Aravona Very good question

@Liam his or mine! I can't actually see the chat reference on mobile lol!

11:53 AM
@Aravona The question about albatross's
I think it should be on biology.stackexchange.com

@Liam yeah it's interesting, and I'd like the know the answer. But I'm not sure it's on topic, seems one of those hazy questions that could do well on a few sites. Like Biology
Lol...

@Aravona Flagged to it migrate

@Liam makes sense. Maybe our meta could define the line when it comes to animals. Like identification is fine, but what animals can do what is off topic?

@Aravona I think we've had this discussion in the past

@Liam probably! I can't flag the question for migration myself.

12:01 PM
@Aravona that doesn't feel like on topic here. Biology should fit - I'll migrate it over
As far as bird watching goes, identifying the ones you will see when out and about is very much on topic, but I can't see this one being on topic here

@RoryAlsop that was my gut thought. Thanks!
He has edited it now however.

12:16 PM
Does it work now?
Not sure though

@OddDev it's better certainly, less grey area.

12:46 PM
@OddDev I think it's been squeezed it into scope

Never guessed that people love the braces question that much O.o :D

2:20 PM
@RoryAlsop I edited your answer to the braces question as Benedikt Bauer had changed a word to say pants... Now as a Brit and a Woman I couldn't in good knowledge leave Suspenders and Pants on the same page on an outdoors website.... Especially around @Dynadin ... He might get ideas.

=)

Thanks @Aravona - usual SE principle is not to correct US to British English, or vice versa, but just to leave in the original poster's region :-)

2:42 PM
@RoryAlsop I get that, usually, but pants, suspenders... It's a little dodgey. Plus your origin isn't US English. Tbh 'them' as a reference for the actual item was fine, it didn't have to change to pants or trousers. You can have braces on shorts.
Feel free to roll it back :)

3:04 PM
No no, I think you did right in this instance.

Why are we still in beta? This confuses me somehow
Who do we have to talk with? We've more traffic as some released sites

@OddDev Everyone who comes here asks the same question LOL
Bascially because we don't generate enough questions

A: Our role in the discussion at Meta.SE regarding the overall health and growth of SE sites

Liamthey also pinned down the criteria for coming out of Beta more firmly. An interesting point was: When a site starts to consistently receive 10 questions/day, we’ll consider it for graduation. Unfortunately we're still well short We've had success in getting this up in the past but alwa...

@OddDev needs to be twice that value
Need 10 per day

:/ Meh
Okay, a few more archery facts I guess... :D

Q: Diversification of questions

LiamThis meta post comes from a discussion I had on Area 51 (that is sadly no longer available as the proposal it was attached to is now closed) Specifically the issue: I thought you didn't want those questions because I hadn't seen them So we have a problem I feel. Our questions are very mou...

@OddDev ^
I personally think the future of this site lies in getting more diverse users onboard
so archery people like @OddDev
Birdwatcing like @Sue
etc.

Q: Keeping safe distance while scrambling

WedaPashiOn an easy but long scramble, 30 to 45o incline, un-anchored, what should be the safe distance between two people? Should the better person be ahead, or be behind supporting the other just in case?

Hi everyone!
Evening @Liam @Rory @M'vy

Just saying, 5.1 and it says okay.
Never seen it so high, especially in winter!?

@Aravona: Evening Sweetie.

@WedaPashi how's it going hun?
I am gonna get around to some more foraging questions soon

I am fine.
Thats great. :)
Ah, it can be divided into two related questions I guess.
Whats the safe distance between the two people, and the other would be, Who should lead (go first) a scramble? The slowest one or the better one?

@WedaPashi possibly but they're definitely related and it maybe a case of one depends on the other.

4:26 PM
@Aravona: True that.

@WedaPashi :) we're doing suprisingly well for the season

heya

I'll definitely come up with more foraging questions

Hows you @M'vy?

Fine. Just trying not bleeding to death by my nose atm.

4:31 PM
Yeah, hopefully we can still improve the question rate. A slack week and we will be back to something around 4?
@M'vy: Ah, what happened?

If I could find were I put my hemostatic tissue
@WedaPashi winter ?
Well nothing alarming. I'm used to it

@M'vy: That bad? :O (Sorry, I have never been to that much cold apart from Himalayas so far)

@WedaPashi Yeah I don't know, wintery weather makes me prone to nose bleed
I usually carry around a medical "thing" to stuff my nose with to stop that, but can't find it.

@M'vy: Okay. Hope you get relief soon.

I'm stuck with stupid paper tissue

4:34 PM
Hehe :D

Which is way less effective

evening

We use Coconut Oil to stop nosebleeds.
But the ones that are usually caused by extreme heat.

@WedaPashi I use a tissue

Coconut Oil as in, a couple of drops before sleeping.
@Rory Evening :)

4:36 PM
@WedaPashi ahh - not poured up the nose then? ;-)

Do inhalers help?
Not really, we typically force out neck back like looking at the sky and drop a couple of drops, stay like that for 3-4 minutes, and its done.

I've never had a nose bleed...
Do they hurt?

I used to get them all the time but I think I grew out of them

5:27 PM
@OddDev if you answer your own question you can do it all in one post, type out the answer then use the "answer my own question button before submitting the questin

I know but my index finger was unstoppable :D
