My dad asked me to send him links to Mathematica learning materials on Friday, which I thought was pretty cool. He has told me a few times that he wants to learn it when he retires, but maybe he will do it a couple of years early

Q: Your answer up-voting policy

m_goldbergMine is simple. I up vote any answer I think will be of value to the OP and to others with a similar problem. If I think the answer will only be of use to the OP (this usually stems from the question being very localized), I will up vote the answer when the answer takes a broad view of the questi...

@MichaelHale What's his job, does he have any background? how old?

@MichaelHale are you based in Atlanta now?

It's unthinkable for me to imagine my dad trying to learn to program

@Rojo is your statement based on his age or his background?

@PatoCriollo Hey! Both. And probably based on his lack of interest too. Perhaps he doesn't even know much what it is about

@Rojo He's the technology director for Oconee County Schools in Georgia. Prior to that he was a science education professor at the University of Georgia. Prior to that he was a programmer for IBM working on educational software. He still types with two fingers though. He's 57.

@MichaelHale That explains it. Nice

@PatoCriollo I moved to Greenville, South Carolina 7-8 weeks ago to start working at TD Bank as a fraud analyst/data scientist. It's about 2 hours from Atlanta.

@MichaelHale I think I've passed by your offices a couple of times taking my youngest to play Soccer @ Greenville. They are besides the I-85, correct?

Yes
Ah, I see on your profile you are in Atlanta.
I lived there for four years when I went to Georgia Tech. Still have a lot of friends there. Was there a few weeks ago for the annual Wikipedia picnic.
I haven't been too impressed with my team and manager at TD so far compared to the ones I had at Microsoft. The work is interesting though. My team is new and very disorganized now though. They had to pull me off my independent project to help with the main project. He asked me to spend a day making a spreadsheet it turns out two other people had already made. One guy spent two weeks doing something completely useless because of poor communication.
Finally my manager just sent an email on Friday saying if anyone can make a better performing model by Wednesday morning they get a prize.
All PhDs on the team, yet they have errors I would take off for as a TA in an undergrad AI class. Using zip code as a quantity variable, redundant variables in model, etc.

@MichaelHale welcome to the corporate world! I would recommend dilbert.com as your daily devotional.

Sounds good. I saw the animated version on Netflix and liked it.

@PatoCriollo Second the dilbert recommendation!

@MichaelHale I liked the animated version way more than the strip
The full episodes, not the 10 second animated strips that I found on youtube when I heard there was an animated version and searched for it
