8:01 PM
hard to say when its completely out of context

but yes

It's just a very weird mix

there is no normal

I guess that's true too

The only odd thing is that they're asking for both Linux and Windows, which is rare. The inclusion of Node is less surprising, I'm not the only one here in this room working with both C++ and JS.

8:04 PM
I technically have 3/4 of those...so probably not that weird

What's Node written in?

I think node.js is implemented in C++?
V8 definitely is

user114359
@Yannis Best part is, the question is off-topic on both meta and main sites.

So there you go, that's the intersection, they're looking for a core Node dev.

That's a good point... guess I'm feeling overly cynical about recruiter spam =D

8:05 PM
except for the Microsoft part
unless McSofty is a major contributor to Node or something

I suppose if something was too slow in Node, you'd write a foreign function interface to C++.

Actually, I've done really weird tech mixes in the past... I used to use Visual Studio with samba mounts to develop on Solaris.

I don't think developing for both linux and windows, or at least wanting experience with both is all that rare

And if that was too slow, you'd write it in assembly.

no but needing it for a job is

8:08 PM
depends how much depth one expects, I have written code for Windows and ported it to Linux before, but I was using Cygwin or MinGW, I've never learned how to use powershell or any of the MS-specific frameworks or anything like that

And if that was too slow, you'd write it in FPGAs.

@AaronHall V8 is pretty effing amazing fast. You might rewrite a Python module in C for speed, but you wouldn't with JavaScript.

And if that was too slow, you'd write it with custom accellerated hardware.

Like ASICs?

And if that was too slow, you'd wait for quantum computing.

8:09 PM
my impression is that Node is usually intended for situations where eeking out every last CPU cycle is not the top priority due to other bottlenecks like networking

And if that was too slow, you'd ask God after you die.

you'd upgrade God's Lisp interpreter so you could reimplement quantum mechanics properly

nodes value is that you can have the same language/codebase on frontend and backend

"God, do these partial differential equations converge?" "No." "Well, then - now I know."
Yeah, but it's also pretty fast on the back end, too, right?

8:13 PM
yeah, that is the biggest benefit

@whatsisname that's why I do everything in C++ :D

@PreferenceBean so what does your name mean?

user41796
And when did you change it? That threw me earlier

it's a joke from the other day's chat, just search the transcript

No, I want to hear @PreferenceBean's explanation.

8:15 PM
The whole spart{i|a}cus stuff?

listens for the text to pop up on the screen

so I get to work on a project updating a software program that interfaces to a hardware device
where the source code to the software, the device, and the device drivers has all been lost

coolio. You should use Python.

sweet

user41796
how are the reverse engineering skillz?

8:17 PM
I think I'm up to the job but I also think this will be the greatest test of them so far in my career

I'm kinda excited for you.
And you're just a puppet that lives in a trash can.

and getting paid a boatload of money to get it figured out is nice too

The times, they are a-changin.
Ever think about upgrading to one of those shipping container houses? They're really nice. And the lids aren't loose.

user114359
@whatsisname this.

@AaronHall: lolz I used to always tell my wife that's what we should do, and just live in a home depot parking lot for super cheap

I can relate to your frustration with existing software and admire your gumption in wanting to create your own. Unfortunately, this is a bit too broad or opinion-based a question for the StackOverflow format. You might try programmers.stackexchange. — showdev 45 secs ago

@showdev - Too Broad for SO means likely too broad for Programmers. This question would be quickly closed over there. — GlenH7 23 secs ago

@AaronHall nobody knows
@GlenH7 a few months ago

then when home depot got tired of me I could just load it up and go to menards

that's literally it
to be honest, Aaron, considering this:

@LightnessRacesinOrbit do it do it do it do it
I'm surprised you're asking :)
it seemed to me that you have a better idea of why I was doing it than I did

At this point, does anything I do really surprise you?

well, no

With Aaron Hall - expect the unexpected. woosh!

8:29 PM
Expect the expected*

I'm just going to leave this here.

I may have over-thinked the problem a little.... Funny that I sit on the second floor of my building and consider gargantuan structures without seeing the obvious solution. — Hohmannfan 7 hours ago

bah no must have been somewhere else
extra co-incidence

does anyone have handy that canonical Q&A about not answering off-topic questions please

user114359
48
Q: Should one advise on off-topic questions?

Stacker-flowNow this may be one of the most common quandaries I have when looking through Stack Overflow questions, when the author has written an obviously off-topic but genuine question such as Title Windows Forms Application Classic Interface c# Description I want c# windows form applications ...

user114359
@PreferenceBean ^^^

Looks legit.

@Snowman ta
not sure whether this is good or bad

9:05 PM
I'm concerned about the outlier, "arrays"... shouldn't that be gold too?
It might give you the appearance of inconsistency. tut-tut.
BTW, do you have experience in both Windows and Linux?

What would someone with those intersection of skills make? 200k?

@AaronHall I wish

What if you were team lead?

no not 200k
the intersection of those skills isn't as wild and crazy as you might think

9:14 PM
What's it take to get to 200k?

otherwise I'd be making 400k
few cross 200k outside of crazytowns like SF while still slinging code all day

:27352757 If thats not the world biggest scam, I don't know what is

Well what about inside a crazy town?

well inside a crazy town it doesn't really matter if you are making 200k but are still poor and can barely cover your bills
so sensibility goes out the window

Inside a crazy town, it's too dark to read.

9:17 PM
and isn't a valid comparison to the other 98% of the US

I read that as "barely cover your balls". Rofl

98% being the population or the geographical area? :)

population

6% of the population is in NYC alone, if the US Census Bureau is to be believed

NYC metro area is nearly 3x more populous than SF metro

9:23 PM
ok, so that's 8% of the population
I don't get the context of this:
5 hours ago, by Jimmy Hoffa
This is why I always say, before making serious moves towards leaving - decide to leave; such that nothing in current circumstances will change your decision. It should be boolean, go or no, and not changeable after the decision is made. Just makes it so much easier and less stressful, removes second guessing altogether. Make a decision and have faith in yourself that you made the right one, then execute on that.
what caused the thinking behind the statement?
I don't think people were talking about leaving their firms, were they?

my employer is great
:o

so's mine...which is why I never say much in those conversations

9:39 PM
@Ixrec I missed that.
ok
oh, here's a good hypothetical, maybe a bit extreme, but it may prove whether Jimmy's philosophy should be taken as axiomatic - say you intend to leave and are interviewing and your firm doesn't know it, but you're given a promotion inside the firm that trumps your likely options (which haven't yet even materialized.) Then do you reconsider?

I have zero experience with this sort of thing but my impression from all the anecdotes I've read across the interblags is this: It depends on why you wanted to leave. If your only problem is that you felt you could get more money/power at another company, then sure, a promotion solves your problem. But if you wanted to leave because it's the sort of depressingly self-destructive and dehumanizing work environment we hear people complaining about all the time, then money won't fix that.

Then it's not axiomatic. Perhaps wise in most conditions, but not a universal truth.

So I have an idea for a website; curious what you guys think (or if I'm so outside of current culture as to not know a website already exists for this): Simple idea is somewhere anyone can go to post a request to do simple role playing for professional scenarios. Not sure exactly how to go about it but thinking you would post a request for somebody to play one role, and you play the other. In the request you describe the scenario and then when someone accepts you two can play it out.

sounds like something people could probably do on existing forums or social networks

Like you could request someone to play the role of a manager who accepted you to a job with some description of the position, and you want them to play the persona trying to negotiate the pay down and you trying to negotiate it up etc. Or you could do mock interviews.
@Ixrec I don't disagree, but it would be purpose focussed on that one specific scenario of 1v1 or 2v1 or whatever role playing. It would have 2 communication forms: Asynchronous text (faux e-mail client) or real-time audio.
Lots of forums and such can do Q&A like SE, but SE as a platform does it better because it's focussed on that one thing
Just comes to mind because a lot of people have both very little practice in professional interactions for a variety of scenarios, and just doing those things in mock format is I think very valuable to a lot of people. Placement company's do mock interviews and all of these things with people a lot
Along with that, it's somewhat gamified because some people enjoy that type of thing and think they're good at it; there's strategy in professional interactions
Could let people give ratings or what not, could make it a win vs. lose scenario somehow maybe. I don't know. It's all just kinda vague in my head but seems like there might be a good idea in there if done right

psr
9:55 PM
"Can you give me 3 examples of times you were disappointed in your performance at work?" "I'll give you 2 but first I'll need $500, in cash".

Role playing for business. You need someone with an MBA to contribute.
Let's see, who do I know...

I think google even does mock interviews with recruiting candidates to help them get ready for the real thing; there's clearly some value in practicing these things as lots of people try to come up with ways of practicing them to prepare themselves. But there's (to my knowledge) nowhere anybody can just go to mock out the scenarios. I could imagine somebody preparing for an interview doing 1 after another mock interview with people through the course of a week before
@AaronHall not necessarily. My boss is an engineer, say I want someone to play an engineering manager to mock my annual review with me because I want to try negotiating for a promotion. Or someone has another job offer and wants to practice telling their boss they have another offer but are willing to negotiate against it

this guy has an MBA: linkedin.com/in/aaronchall

people are super nervous before trying political power plays like that
@AaronHall no wonder I don't like you :P
(kidding)

10:00 PM
@AaronHall if there was such a website, would you find it interesting to try playing the opposite role in professional scenarios for people trying to practice and get better at it?

Yeah, I bet Enderland would too, but trying to negotiate more money with an offer in hand is a dumb thing to do, as you've already indicated you know that.

^^ this is why I think the idea has some merits. People on both sides (the ones wanting to practice, and those who like playing the opposite role) could see it as worthwhile

I think people would get more out of just reading a few of the right answers on workplace.SE

@AaronHall that's passive though, the idea is for a vastly different benefit than information or decision making or strategy: The idea is to practice executing strategy's

Yeah, I wouldn't mind bursting bubbles a little bit.

10:05 PM
Lots of people are very smart and totally capable of those things, but get ultra nervous when faced with actually communicating their thoughts to someone or trying to convince someone. Practice may make them less nervous when they actually have to sit down with their boss or answer the call from HR to negotiate actual numbers
dunno.. it seems like there's a problem there, and practice is a recognized solution (google recruiting does it, placement agencies do it), and the confluence of that problem and solution should yield something that could be made available to the public at large
what that thing would look like I haven't exactly put together in my head yet, but it's percolating...

user41796
@JimmyHoffa - it's equivalent to the idea of a "life coach" so there's some merit there as it provides more specificity. But if it becomes successful, I can almost guarantee there will be the equivalent of "back page" classifieds

@GlenH7 I'm not looking for a succesful product though, if I could come up with something that worked for the goal I've vaguely described, then it would be succesful IMO, whether it gains any great amount of use or not. Partially anything I put together technically is for portfolio as much as anything, but I like the idea of making useful things, that motivates me far more than protfolio showcase junk
anywho time for parent teacher conference, later

@JimmyHoffa well, there's bulletin boards and chat rooms - I guess that's what you'd be implementing.
People would make topical posts on the bulletin board, hang out in the chat room, and then go to special chat rooms to role-play.
So that's a turn-key BB and IRC chat?

10:34 PM
ok, wrapping up to go home, cheers folks

... what is it with running naked through the streets and the office?

@AaronHall you would post requests, people would accept them and then you'd be placed into either: A faux e-mail client to send e-mails back and forth with the other person, or if you chose realtime, it would be a fake phone call between you and the person. Either one would be private, and when the request was accepted it would be removed from the requests queue. Upon completion of the role playing, you and the other person may have some form of rating or other type of interaction-review
the interaction-review piece I really have no idea's on. I think the role-playing-scenario-request and acceptance piece is pretty straight forward
the phone call would be actual live audio, because again for many, text is perfectly comfortable but actual voice communication trips them up and makes them very uncomfortable.

@AaronHall That "promotion" thing - I'm a coder. I like to code. Promoting me to not coding is not fun. Thats worse. Thats a reason to leave. You would have to pay me $$$$$ to make me stay if I can't code... and then there are probably other reasons why I'm interviewing that a promotion doesn't fix.

user55340
Want to promote me? Give me the title "developer at large" and let me go write neat things... but I've never seen a place where that exists outside of the random big tech companies that really want to keep their $250k/y dev thats been there for a decade and want him to come out with new business ideas.
