The file size is not the true cost. The true cost is typing all those angle brackets and close tags. — Robert Harvey 22 secs ago

@RobertHarvey but then you could make it a visual C like language!

"The LISP language I had not heard of before" – Don't take this the wrong way, but if you haven't even heard of the most famous programming language of all time, the second oldest, the most influential, the language which single-handedly invented a significant portion of the features of modern languages/engines (anonymous subroutines, first-class subroutines, garbage collection, dynamic typing, JIT compilation, macros, reflection, mixins, compile-time metaprogramming), then maybe you shouldn't be designing programming languages. Yes, everybody has to start somewhere. But Lisp is the start. — Jörg W Mittag 2 mins ago

Hi Hariom, this site is for programmers to ask for help with coding problems. You haven't written any code, so it's quite hard for us to help you. — Terence Eden 44 secs ago

@AaronHall the biggest thing is understanding your reasons for leaving. most of the time, the list is long and a single promotion doesn't fix them
@JimmyHoffa I've written "practice" quite a few times on Workplace for interviewing, it is really helpful to do that (whether fake or real) when you don't need it

> No games found
oh my god xbox don't scare me like that
they've appeared now

did I mention that time my Xbox One tried to make me pay for Halo 5 even though I'd already put a Halo 5 disc into it?

no
4's been so horribly laggy lately. worrying that it's my internet connection. because it's really bad and there are no service disruptions listed.
and it's been a while now
they just bumped everyone up to 200Mbps for free so it wouldn't surprise me if they'd frakked it up somehow

whenever I hear people talk about multiplayer gaming it always sounds like a huge amount of work

3:52 PM
work for what?

my thoughts exactly

I mean what is the huge amount of work :P
ignoring the "Work for what" part :)

well there's always talk about which servers have the right game types and good enough ping, what hours you have to play at, arranging to play with people you know or else getting screwed over by random incompetent players, keeping track of updates and patches and whether any of them suddenly ruin everything, and of course the game inevitably becoming unplayable at some unknown future date because everyone moves on or the company kills it

heh yeah

the ROI on all that has never made any sense to me at all

4:04 PM
I've pretty much stopped playing World of Warships because the game is getting dumbed down consistently
not all games require server info and that, some are just "online" vs "not online" too which can help (or hurt if you have issues hah)

single player games stay good forever, and you can even add co-op to them to gain most of the legitimate benefits that multiplayer does have

idk if you and your SO play board games, but they are similarly good

nope, I think I've suggested stuff in the past but it never seems to happen

we like them

the last time we played something was when we were visiting my gf's family and we had a 4P Monopoly game everyone really enjoyed

4:08 PM
uggggh monopoly is the worst

so my current conclusion (and I think also hers) is that the board games we're both interested in are the ones that require more than two people to work
that does seem to be the universal opinion of people who play board games regularly, I suspect I'd agree if I did too

some games are better suited to 3+ than 2 players

user15026
I like the idea of board games, but they require people to play, and that's usually where things break down, because getting a group together never quite seems to happen for me.

yup, all games involving more than 1 person have a major problem there

user15026
I also don't like a lot of multiplayer stuff because it is either shooters that I am completely awful at, or stuff like WoW where you gotta keep track of gear and stats which I am also rubbish at.

4:13 PM
I've never liked gear and stats games either
for me a game has to have the kind of gameplay where conscious effort to suck less results in better performance, whether that means more enemies die faster or you get to the end in less time or whatever

user15026
Too many numbers to keep track of.

there are plenty of variety in board games too...

(that or it's a narrative experience like Telltale games where you can sorta ignore gameplay as a concept)
@enderland I think we're talking about video games atm

user15026
I tend to stick to mobile games or stuff on Nintendo consoles because I can play it reliably knowing I won't suck.

user15026
But like anything that's like "optimize your character" in any real way tends to break my brainmeat

4:17 PM
I usually go for shooters or hack-and-slash games
those generally have some element of progression, but not full-blown RPG stuff, and I have a habit of never bothering with most of the alternate weapons in favor of getting better at my main one
once I even beat Ninja Gaiden Black on hard mode through the power of not sucking, which was awesome
especially the first Evil Ryu fight
speaking of Nintendo, they need to make another Metroid game already

user15026
I tend to like platformers or like...simple RPG stuff

user15026
Right now I've been playing Mario and Luigi Paper Jam (although I forgot to save and my 3DS died so I lost a bunch of progress and I am frustrated with that)

I used to like platformers back when they were the dominant genre
the 2nd through 4th Ratchet and Clank games in particular were great
as were the first three Sly Cooper games
but I think I missed the generation of Crash Bandicoot and Spyro and the like so all of the other platformers I played were "action platformers" or "shooters with platforming elements" or more recently "indie puzzle platformers"

4:32 PM
right time to do some work

on Saturday?

yeah :(

user15026
@PreferenceBean I'm working til 5 today, I feel you

@AshleyNunn will probably do twelve hours or so today then again tomorrow

is this a normal thing for you two or is something special going on?

user15026
4:39 PM
@Ixrec For me, my usual work week is Tues-Fri 12-8 and Sat 10-5

user15026
So for me, this is my usual Saturday

@Ixrec I always do extra but we've got some special antics going on atm
basically nobody realised that we actually have to install these devices for which we're writing a central management system, and that for the installers to use a local copy of the management system on their laptop to do signal testing in situ before signing off the install is just ludicrous
so I decided to put together a local craft configurator for it
and now everybody's realised we actually do need it

Happy Coffee Day

so I have to get three months' work done in two weeks :D
downside: stupid lots of work, as usual
upside: I had nothing else to do, I get paid overtime, and I will look like a hero
so it's not too bad this go around
still, all things considered I'd rather play Halo all day

@Ixrec it's only work if you're crazy competitive and want to optimize every little tiny factor of the game. The truth is the vast majority of games make it super easy these days; they auto-search a fixed set of developer-company-run servers and drop you in
@PreferenceBean never look like a hero! Ever! Not EVER
but it's saturday so I'm not going to go through all of that

4:48 PM
@JimmyHoffa true, of the problems I listed the subset that can be solved purely by technology sort of have been these days
though as we discovered the other day even the current solutions are far from 100% reliable

@AshleyNunn you should get table top simulator! I've been playing it lately, tons of fun! It's got a bazillion user-made board and card games and a super simple server browser built right in for hopping into any of them. I'd play some monopoly or whatever with ya if you had it :D

the only reason I've heard of Tabletop Simulator is because the youtubers I watch played a bunch of Secret Hitler with it, which was the most hilarious thing ever

@Ixrec to be fair, that's a beta game. Well put together, but it's still got some bugs around certain things. That said, I never had any of those issues playing with @Ampt or in any other situation
@Ixrec it is fun :D
@Ixrec it's worth buying for certain

@JimmyHoffa yeah, I get the impression that the issues which actually affect you are different depending on how casual vs hardcore one is; I get stuck with weird bugs and server ping problems, more competent people have to deal with games dying or everyone sucking compared to them, etc

user15026
@JimmyHoffa That sounds awesome. :)

4:52 PM
@AshleyNunn Table Top Simulator on sale 50% off right now for $10
@Ixrec @MichaelT @Ampt @WorldEngineer ^^

user15026
Oooh, excellent.

user15026
I will have to look at it when I am home and can actually buy things

5:16 PM
one more episode and I'll finally be caught up on Supergirl

user15026
How is that show?

I'm still enjoying it
not on the same level as Daredevil and Jessica Jones but it's fun

user15026
I've not seen those either. :P

5:35 PM
I need to start watching Jessica Jones..

@AshleyNunn I am not surprised to hear that I am the bigger nerd in this conversation =P

user15026
From what I've heard, both shows are probably a little darker than what I usually like to watch

user15026
Supergirl looks like it might be fun though.

that is most certainly true
though Jessica Jones is probably a lot darker/more disturbing than Daredevil

6:05 PM
Supergirl is the only show I'm currently watching where they constantly try talking the bad guys out of being bad (and sometimes succeed), if that counts for anything

user55340
@psr gotta say, I'm liking Darkest Dungeon for its dungeon crawl nature. The various management aspects of it fit well into the classic rogue like mold. You've got party management (who comes along and where do they stand), skill management (what set of skills do you use), inventory management, and resource management (what to upgrade in the town - buildings and skills/equipment)... and then the management of stress and insanity. I've enjoyed it so far.

@JimmyHoffa I see that and raise you:

user15026
That's going to be a weekend project at some point I think

user15026
I need that in my face

9:37 PM
meh dessert

@WorldEngineer see and raise? Are you turning The Whiteboard into your Table Top Simulator? Well, I see that, and raise: You're hitler!

user20683
@JimmyHoffa I see your Godwin's Law and raise my Norman Law in response

@WorldEngineer I call Occam's Shaver; check and mate, Sir.

@PreferenceBean I love desserts :D

9:46 PM
@AshleyNunn that basically makes you a terrible person

hello, i installed linux alongside windows 7 , now can i see linux os file by log in windows 7

user20683
@PreferenceBean there will none of that in here

user15026
@PreferenceBean More cake for me.

@user143252 If you installed Linux as a dual-boot OS: Linux probably uses the Ext4 file system, which Windows 7 doesn't understand unless you install extra drivers for that. However, you can see your Windows files from Linux.

10:09 PM
@AshleyNunn the cake is a lie :(
