7:00 PM
@GlenH7 because at the moment it's terrible? the focus of the site (in my experience) has been very hard CS, making it useless for most visitors and too close to TCS

user41796
@Telastyn Yeah, I started looking at various stats as Michael suggested. Just not a lot of activity there

user41796
Looking at edit and voting tallies was a bit discouraging

@Telastyn yeah I've yet to realize a distinction between TCS and CS - CS is after all completely theory if you're avoiding application, which is precisely what they're doing to avoid just being P.SE or SO
P.SE does everything CS does if CS allows application, so they have to keep it to formalisms that don't exist in reality - but only in theory.

user55340
@GlenH7 yep. No one closes, votes, or answers there. Thus, not graduating anytime soon.

user41796
It's kinda sad

7:07 PM
I've got 2 questions there that just were kinda poo-poo'd as "you don't know what you're talking about"
which, I mean sure, might be the case

user55340
7:25 PM
Btw, bridge question is in the hot list.

user41796
Congrats!

user55340
@GlenH7 they need something other than homework, and people answering them. And voting, but that is something many can do there.

user55340
And closing questions they don't want.

user41796
Closing is kinder than letting them die unanswered

user55340
Which get deleted after a month or year if no votes.

user55340
7:30 PM
But, since so few q/d, they are likely hesitant to clean, which is needed to determine what they do want.

Q: Constructor-only subclasses: Is this an anti-pattern?

mlefavorI was having a discussion with a co-worker, and we ended up having conflicting intuitions about the purpose of subclassing. My intuition is that if a primary function of a subclass is to express a limited range of possible values of its parent, then it probably shouldn't be a subclass. He argued ...

I think the answer to this question is "No, it's not an anti-pattern". I was about to write an answer to that effect (with more explanation, obviously) but I want to make sure I'm not wrong first :)

user55340
I'll admit to writing a structure of classes that employed exactly that pattern.

My second instinct was that the question is opinion based... but if THAT question is opinion based, then all of P.SE is opinion based ;)

user55340
Granted, that was lpc, so differnt patterns employed.

user55340
(They were also singletons... But again, that's just how it worked)

user55340
7:42 PM
As to cs, they really haven't tried doing the "we come up with algorithms" that we get here, other than duping them to a post about np complete. Same with big o

I ended up answering the question anyway, but most of the time seeing an answer like @Telastyn's would make me bail on writing my own answer. It's certainly a complete waste of time to keep answering on SO when an answer as good and complete as that one appears before you finish writing.
Hm. Maybe my FGITW time wasting defense mechanisms I learned on SO don't apply on progs

yeah, I am not nearly fast (or niche) enough to effectively make SO answers

user41796
@durron597 No, not as much

user41796
Especially not over the long run

user41796
The answers on progs that tend to be up voted more are the ones that are more easily understood

user41796
7:53 PM
And even though two answers may say the same thing, the writing style can affect which one gets more votes

explains why mine are not normally upvoted... haa

user55340
... Given they are not trivial one liners.

8:20 PM
fucking math

I saw this on a company internal newsletter today:
> “Most CMU undergrads probably aren’t thinking about working at a bank after they graduate,” said -----, who was part of ---’s team at the event. “We need to compete with companies like Facebook and Google for talented developers. This was an opportunity for us to show them that working at --- can be just as fun, exciting and fulfilling as Facebook.”
Me and my team
It was a good laugh
@Telastyn Effing math indeed

user55340
I will contend that working at Facebook is... Well, the fb devs I knew back then were "I made a widget that kept people on the page for 15s more"

user55340
Sure, you get free pizza, but you are not doing anything to help society

@MichaelT You worked at FB?
@MichaelT You worked at FB?
really?
Are you saying it was a laugh or it was fulfilling and exciting?

user55340
I lived in silly valley. I knew several fb devs.

8:28 PM
silly valley... how have I never heard this hilariously appropo vernacular until now?
2 million for a 3 bedroom house... silly

user55340
Blame the iPhone. I start typing sil and silly is an option and I'm "close enough"

nice
its a feature not a bug
I believe that expression also came out of silly valley
I am actually in a decent mood today. Got to code something meaningful for the first time in like a year

@MichaelT should get a badge here for being part of chat on his phone so much

Unit and integration testing templates to be used as standards for offshore developers

just made a triple integral to calculate the volume of a barrel for my gf at work when all she wanted was the surface area of a partial cylinder... women.

user55340
8:32 PM
@enderland I get tempted to write s better app.

Can't live with em, can't live without em

@MichaelT Bank is essentially public sector
@Ampt LOL!

user55340
@maple_shaft we get the same vacation days.

so nobody cares. Accountability is pretty much ut the door

a partial barrel no less. it's for a room shes doing the HVAC for. She explained the bounds to me (via me asking for measurements of various features) for like 45 minutes and I finally got the volume, then she goes "No... I wanted the surface area of the ceiling. An it's not an oval, its just a cylinder"

8:34 PM
@MichaelT I get 3 weeks, and only because I have an Officer title. They typically only hand out 2 weeks
I didnt know there are still companies giving only 2 weeks?

user55340
Starting for all here is three weeks. More referring to bank holiday = state holiday.

Bank holidays are nice

user55340
@maple_shaft employer ^^ was 1 to start.

@MichaelT Murrica

We get 10 days to start, but more than 10 paid holidays a year

8:37 PM
"Hurr durr young tech minded kids dont want to work for us. We can compete, we are cool too..."
Clearly not that we are getting offshore help because nobody coming out of school wants to be a software dev here

user55340
120h to start. 9h/y... And then there is that 9/80 schedule I work.

in fact...
CMU aside, most of the kids coming out fo school here are getting into QA and BA professions
mostly BA

user55340
Lacking sufficient code skills?

You can't take a crap in the streets of pittsburgh without it landing on a Project Manager or a Business Analyst
@MichaelT No coding skills whatsoever

most of my jobs have been 2 weeks. it's something silly like 5 here.

8:39 PM
its like young people around here collectively all agreed that CS is too hard for too little work
for too little pay... sorry
like... job openings and crickets, regardless of pay

The BAs over here make almost as much as the CS/Dev people
hell... I am a BA right now

BA's here are failed programmers who can't even do a flowchart right

@maple_shaft The CMU CS program takes so few students

@durron597 The CMU CS program produces so little value

@JimmyHoffa even with all of those blanks I still knew exactly what companies you are talking about

8:41 PM
@maple_shaft I know :D

I applied early to CMU. They said "OMG PLEASE COME TO OUR SCHOOL WE WILL GIVE YOU WHATEVER YOU WANT.... except you can't major in CS. Sorry."

user55340
The perception of pay is again silly valley. You can make 120k there! (200% cost of living) vs 65k here (100% cost of living). Which do you take?

@durron597 The google office built an underground tunnel from the CMU CS department to their office so they need not actually interact with the world around them
lol

I said "Ok, I'll go to one of the schools that's way better than you in every major except CS then that I'll get into during regular decision"

crap
g2g
bye

8:43 PM
@MichaelT but if you go to silly valley for a year, make 120k, you can come back here and say "Well, i'm worth at least 6 figures", and probably get it

Plus then I don't have to live in Pittsburgh.

@maple_shaft really? A) Wise because CMU shouldn't sully their folk nor should Google with that place. B) !?!?! How fucking long is that tunnel??

user55340
Cmu to mountain view is....

800000 miles, or roughly .0000001% of googles revenue in tunnel-cost

@MichaelT the office is in east liberty but the CMU campus I'm thinking of is the other side of the monongahela

8:45 PM
@JimmyHoffa Is Pittsburgh also in Midwest, US?

user55340
@Ampt gonna hire elon to make a high speed train?

@durron597 yeah, probably smart, I just did a 2 minute google search and probably found it
Nah, just fill the tunnel with Tesla Ds

user55340
@durron597 hell no it isn't.

@durron597 depends who you ask. I go with no. You'd be surprised to know how contentious this is however

it ain't.

8:47 PM
thing of it is 'burghers are really southerners too far north to call themselves southerners, so they often claim Midwest because at least they don't have to call themselves northeasterners.

@JimmyHoffa It's much closer to Cleveland than it is to Philly
In fact Pittsburgh to Columbus = Pittsburgh to HARRISBURG

@durron597 hour and a half in decent traffic to my memory

My girlfriend's brother went to Duquesne and majored in Jazz, he's pretty chill

user55340

8:51 PM
I'm just baffled that midwesterners would even try to claim the dakotas.. I mean, are they trying to save all the hair-spray swilling impoverished natives? Because I know they aren't claiming them as the same culture...

user55340
It's not a claim. Its a "when polled of this state is in a region, sometimes people put Dakotas in Midwest. "

@MichaelT oh, maybe people didn't know anything about the Dakotas. Don't blame them, nobody lives there so how much can people know about it?

Most of the Dakotas are basically in MN anyways
And movies like Fargo exist making fun of MN... which is funny

user55340

user55340
Midwest (above) vs upper Midwest (earlier)

8:54 PM
@JimmyHoffa Pop quiz: which state has the fastest increasing average wage in the US?

user55340
North Dakota

user55340
Going rate for Taco Bell employee in Minot is in the $20s.

user55340
If you are able, you are in the oil fields making $100k

Ding. And the state with the highest population growth rate (including immigrants from other US states) is also North Dakota

people do talk like that in Minnesota though, it's creepy.

user55340
8:56 PM
So, Taco Bell has to compete with that for people with the skill set of "can lift 35 lbs"

@MichaelT Still, the high cost of living northeast states have higher median income. But those states' median income is dropping.
Of course, this actually all goes to prove @JimmyHoffa's real point, which is that no one wants to live in ND
They just do because they can make mucho dinero

@Telastyn only in rural areas

user55340
The median center of U.S. population is determined by the United States Census Bureau from the results of each census. The Bureau defines it to be: the point though which a north-south line and an east-west line each divides the total population of the country in half. As of the 2010 U.S. census, this places roughly 154.4 million Americans living on each side of a longitude line passing through a location in Pike County, Indiana, and the same number living on each side of a latitude line through the same point. During the 20th century the median center of U.S. population moved roughly 180 mi...

enh, there's enough people in the loop that "you betcha" to bother me.

wooo code in review that was me writing, not pairing with someone... feels nice for a change haha

9:08 PM
hrm, net neutrality actually passed

user55340
@durron597 employer ^^ found it cheaper to staff Minot store by flying in people from stores being remodeled every day than to hire there.

@MichaelT That commute must be insane. I can't understand people willing to have air commutes
I guess if you have enough miles the other benefits are worth it

I flew to Minot for work once at Employer ^^^^ or something :)

user55340
9:23 PM
@durron597 remodel store is otherwise very reduced hours at nearby store if any.

user55340
Alt, fly to Minot for all the hours. If you want, you can do a 4 on 3 off and have room and food stipend.

user55340
There are regular flights there every day.

user55340
Note, this is for Eau Claire, Chicago and msp only - need planes in area to start with.

11:11 PM
"Can lift 35 lbs." Hey, I can do that.

11:24 PM
@RobertHarvey Can you live in North Dakota without going stir crazy?

Almost got transferred there once. Dodged that bullet.
